- rdldr1, on 02/26/2009, -44/+166This surge to buy guns and ammo happens every time a democrat becomes President. Nothing new here. Pres. Obama won't take your guns and ammo. Think about it. We had a Republican president for the past 8 years, and abortion is still legal in the US.
- g0thm0g, on 02/26/2009, -8/+72Some people are stocking up out of fear of economic and societal collapse rather than NRA propaganda that Obama is going to ban firearms.
President Obama and gun owners alike are not the scary monsters some of you seem to think they are. - seventhc, on 02/26/2009, -4/+68I don't own a gun
but I do want the right to own one. - mcquitty, on 02/26/2009, -11/+70No, they don't ban guns. They just pass useless laws like the "Assault Weapon Ban".
Let's ban weapons because they look menacing. Minus a couple well publicized shootouts, AR15s and AK47s are rarely used in crimes. They are far too conspicuous. Most robbers would use a pistol or revolver. They are much easier to conceal.
For example, Bill Maher on Larry King Live http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0409/13/lkl ... :
"Why do they need a gun where you just pull the trigger and it sprays 300 bullets in a minute."
Bill, your fearmongering about weapons that fire 300 rounds per minute... Those weapons are still available, but those weren't the weapons the AWB was dealing with. Those require a Class 3 firearms license. But don't let facts get in your way. - ScienceDoc, on 02/26/2009, -100/+145When did Digg become gunwhacko.org?
- HAL90000, on 02/26/2009, -7/+51Handguns are semi-automatic, by the way. A 9mm handgun is a "semi-automatic weapon". That word is just used to scare people and conjure up images of giant machine guns mowing down fields of innocent children (aka propaganda and lies).
I am really baffled at how the 2nd amendment can just be ignored by these people. - inactive, on 02/26/2009, -16/+58And gun sellers are playing into the hysteria. Just read the blurb for this gun:
http://www.nighthawktactical.com/GRP.html
"We live in a world of uncertainty, where conflicts can ignite overnight. We face uncertain days with new challenges thrust upon us like never before in the history of this country. Not all challenges come from abroad. Civil unrest can cause a flash point where the only line between armed chaos and the average citizen is Law Enforcement. When this happens, the individuals called upon need weapons that are reliable and effective. That's exactly what we had in mind when we introduced the GRP."
They should advertise on PrisonPlanet... - inactive, on 02/26/2009, -6/+45Hmm. I heard the exact same ***** in 1977. Carter was going to take away everyone's guns. The economy was in a shambles. Civil unrest was right around the corner.
Every couple of decades, the same loony ***** start shouting "end of the world!!!", and think they are unique.
Guess what? You aren't. You just have a wider net (the Internet) that you can toss now, to gather like minded idiots together. - sturmgiest, on 02/26/2009, -33/+69I have a lot of friends with guns. None of them are fearful. Obama isn't going to take any guns, he is just going to ban all of the ones that people want to buy.
- Doubledown, on 02/26/2009, -4/+39I walk around unarmed... yet I will defend anyone who wants to carry a gun legally.
- nadnamenil, on 02/26/2009, -5/+40I don't think Obama is having the effect of increased gun ownership as much as the economic crisis is. People are scared crime will increase in the coming years, I believe Obama is just a side note honestly.
- ucbmckee, on 02/26/2009, -34/+64These are all the same nutcase libertarians who supported Ron Paul. Fat, middle-aged, paranoid white guys who probably like to call their houses 'compounds' and dream of a day when Red Dawn might really happen and they can be the last action hero to save the nation. Or they can single-handedly stave off the entire US Military because of some perceived 'commie streak'. Basically, ***** crazy people that society would probably be safer not having around.
- sturmgiest, on 02/26/2009, -11/+41Sure he wont take them. He will just ban all semi-autos.
- HAL90000, on 02/26/2009, -8/+38Hey, I know! Ban death, and we can all live forever! Ya know, since banning things makes the problem magically disappear and all!
- TomT127, on 02/26/2009, -4/+33At least some companies are making a profit these days.
- pathouston22, on 02/26/2009, -4/+32Nothing to fear?
http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-h45/show
If this bill makes progress, I will certainly be buying a gun or two. - kemp34, on 02/26/2009, -1/+27Bingo. Some of this has to do with Obama, but a great portion does not.
I would venture to say that regardless of the president, gun sales will rise in uncertain economic times. It's pretty damn basic.
The partisan tools who spew BS left and right are really annoying. - waluum, on 02/26/2009, -1/+26John F. Kennedy:
"Today, we need a nation of Minutemen, citizens who are not only prepared to take arms, but citizens who regard the preservation of freedom as the basic purpose of their daily life and who are willing to consciously work and sacrifice for that freedom." - inactive, on 02/26/2009, -14/+37I know. Look at all the legal gun owners that had shootouts just yesterday.
Oh, your tinfoil hat fell off there. - stormofswords, on 02/26/2009, -9/+32And then you'll burst through the window, guns blazing, and mowing down government agents left and right. They'll shoot at you, but all of the bullets will miss you because you're rolling and dodging and kickin' ass!
- Polly, on 02/26/2009, -9/+32And civil war! Don't forget civil war!
- mcquitty, on 02/26/2009, -2/+24Eric:
Really?
According to the CDC in 2005 there were 30,964 deaths related to firearms.
17,002 were suicides. For the mathematically challenged, thats over half.
13,137 were homicides.
789 were unintentional.
Assuming the homicide rate wouldn't change much, just the method, let's talk about those 789 unintentional deaths. While each may be tragic, let's look at a few examples of what kills more:
Transportation: 47,894
Poisonings: 32,691
Alcohol: 21,081 (excluding accidents and homicides)
Here's the 10 leading causes:
Heart disease: 652,486
Cancer: 553,888
Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 150,074
Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 121,987
Accidents (unintentional injuries): 112,012
Diabetes: 73,138
Alzheimer's disease: 65,965
Influenza/Pneumonia: 59,664
Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 42,480
Septicemia: 33,373
16,926 people died from licit and illicit drugs. Note: 0 were marijuana related.
Then there's these:
Pedestrians: 5976
ATVs and Off-road vehicles: 951
All Falls: 18,807
Drownings: 3,308
By your definition, we should outlaw ATVs and Off-road vehicles because they killed more people accidently than guns did. - inactive, on 02/26/2009, -11/+32And impose incredibly high taxes on gun ownership, ammo sales, gun sales, while putting "gun protection laws" into effect. Those familiar with pre-WW2 german history already know the drill.
- SuperVepr308, on 02/26/2009, -1/+22There may be some truth to that. *Lifetime NRA Member*
- stormofswords, on 02/26/2009, -5/+25my mom's basement makes the perfect tactical bunker for taking on the government
- RumpleForeskin3, on 02/26/2009, -7/+27If only we had more maple syrup, hockey, and snow to keep us sane...
- JAVandiver, on 02/26/2009, -6/+25The stock image is of Japanese air soft guns! More FUD so that people can be afraid of firearms...
- Blisshead, on 02/26/2009, -8/+27Guns and ammo are very expensive, most of the people who are stocking up can well afford it, and feed their family, and still go on vacation.
Due to Obama's voting record, I would say the concern over the 2nd is justified. He has promised multiple times that lawful gun owners have nothing to fear, so we'll see in time if he keeps his word or not.
Being dismissive about people who care about the 2nd amendment is really not helpful, and furthers an us vs. them mentality. It would be more productive, rather than fight each other (as statistically lawful gun owners are not a problem) to work on the sense of hopelessness, disenfranchisement and general lack of empathy that our society is facing. This issue has to do with almost all aspects, opportunity, poverty, etc. A much harder issue to tackle and certainly one with less political leverage, but if you really want to deal with violence, there you go. - homer4199, on 02/26/2009, -7/+24Don't forget about taxing the hell out of ammo.
- davewashere, on 02/26/2009, -3/+19But I made a killing on those abortion stocks I bought back in 2000.
- ousthouse, on 02/26/2009, -3/+18There's no rational argument for owning most things sold these days. That doesn't make it right to ban them.
- stormofswords, on 02/26/2009, -10/+25Ok. When he doesn't, will you post on Digg how sorry you were for being an alarmist who was completely wrong?
PS you misspelled geist. - angryfirelord, on 02/26/2009, -6/+21It's time to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I'm all out of gum.
- baldbomber, on 02/26/2009, -3/+182nd Ammendment: "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."
10th Ammendment: "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."
Now explain to me where the federal government has the right in the constitution to ban semi-automatic weapons. - godofallcows, on 02/26/2009, -1/+15***** YEAH ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE
- mrkmrk, on 02/26/2009, -0/+14Sulthernao: It is.
- jjohnstn, on 02/26/2009, -2/+15@ Charun: the NRA worked hard to get those guns back, even sueing the NOLA city government. There was *plenty* of talk about it, though mainstream media was more interested in the celebrity flavor of the week.
@kemp34: Exactly.
@PatHouston22: Those "uneducated thugs" were trying to defend their homes and lives with the only means available. The true thugs were NOLA police confiscating the only protection they had (guns). - Shiftgood, on 02/26/2009, -13/+26you had me at 'compounds'
lol
Perhaps people wouldnt be afraid of gun owners if they actually behaved like rational people. - SuperVepr308, on 02/26/2009, -5/+18I feed my family AND buy ammo (lots of ammo).
- cornfeed, on 02/26/2009, -0/+13Yep, that's the way Democrats thought, talked, and walked back in the day.
- atomheartmother, on 02/26/2009, -1/+14Anyone who thinks Obama's policies with regard to firearms have proven effective so far should put on their flak jacket and walk through his district in Chicago.
- sulthernao, on 02/26/2009, -6/+19Why does the federal government have the right to ban nukes for that matter? Isn't that an infringement on the right to bear arms.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 02/26/2009, -44/+57Hey...whatever improves the economy...
Even if it is a bunch of paranoid gun nuts wasting money on bullets when they could be feeding their family. - inactive, on 02/26/2009, -7/+19What up with all the people acting like our government wasn't hijacked by the international money cartel in 1913.
- kemp34, on 02/26/2009, -7/+19That action in Louisiana was beyond terrible and blatantly unconstitutional.
If you want to live in blatant tyranny, you are a sad excuse for a human being. - TrevorBelmont, on 02/26/2009, -3/+15When someone says "legalize pot", you call them a hero.
When the same person says, "Keep guns legal." you call them a gun nut.
I see these two statements as different fronts in the same argument. Preservation of personal freedom. It was never about why I should or shouldn't have one of these things. It's about you or anyone else's rights to tell me, a free man, what I can or can not have. - ousthouse, on 02/26/2009, -0/+12Death hasn't been banned, but we do have a high inheritance tax.
- Zervaman, on 02/26/2009, -3/+15Err, there's no way that is a pic of real guns...
Looks like airsoft. Whoever chose that pic obviously knows nothing about firearms. - LibertyPrime, on 02/26/2009, -6/+17What in the hell are you honestly expecting to happen?
- inactive, on 02/26/2009, -5/+16Just because gun sales are up during the beginning of Obama's administration doesn't mean it's because of Obama's administration. It could be because of other factors, like the recession. Take alcohol sales for example. They're down in the beginning of his administration by 9.3 percent, but that doesn't mean the story should run with the headline "Pride in Obama Cures Alcoholism"
