It' s a very strange phenomenon since even without factoring in the high corn price, hog prices are in a complete tailspin while supermarket prices are steady or rising.
I raise a few pigs every year for "fun". This year I sold 4 market hogs for $230 which is less money than I paid for their feed. To put that into perspective, if I had taken them to the local butcher to get the meat processed and packaged then managed to sell it for $1.00/lb and I would have got $400. The price of ground pork in the supermarket is over $2.00/lb. I suspect price fixing somewhere in the supply chain.
