- CH3CH2OH, on 12/08/2007, -2/+36More than anything, this marks the true end of the nineties. When it essentially takes an internet connection to buy a computer, it shows how we're all connected.
- smurf22, on 12/08/2007, -5/+35I'll miss compusa I don't care what anyone says they were always better than bestbuy.
- inactive, on 12/08/2007, -4/+32That's too bad. I dug the whole DIY vibe of CompUSA.
- JonRick, on 12/08/2007, -1/+23I worked there from 2002-2003, and I fully agree. It's an awful company and its no wonder they are going out of businesses. All they cared about was selling "TAP" and pushing AOL. I quit after I sold an old man a $3000 gaming rig when all he wanted was something he could check his email on. My sales manager was so proud but I felt so dirty for taking advantage of the poor guy. The next day I called in and said I wasn't coming back.
- rmw132, on 12/08/2007, -0/+20Look out for those 5% laptop deals!! (anyone who visited a closing CompUSA store last spring knows what I'm talking about)
- PRlME, on 12/08/2007, -1/+18I worked at COMPUSA around 1999-2000, worst management ever. Die a quick death!
- KBWUSA, on 12/08/2007, -4/+21When CompUSA first came to town -back in the day- it was a momentous occasion. There, you could buy your desire 24x7. I've always built my own pooters, so having that option available meant a great deal to me. Of course I paid extra for the convenience, but that was OK. I loved browsing the aisles of the store. It was -at the time- like walking through the pages of Computer Shopper magazine; the feeling was exhilarating. Since that time I’ve remained dedicated, to some degree, to purchasing their products. Their demise will feel somewhat like that of the loss of an old friend. I will think of them often, think of the good times and miss them immensely. Farewell CompUSA, you were good to me.
- inactive, on 12/08/2007, -0/+13I wonder how using "pooter" as a replacement for "computer" irl sounds:
"Dude, nice pooter" or "Hey, what type of pooter do you have?" or "My pooter is better than yours" - FearlessFreep, on 12/08/2007, -0/+12Now when it takes an internet connection to order internet service...
- MillionsLivio, on 12/08/2007, -1/+11Seriously, "pooter" is so damn annoying.
- brucealmighty, on 12/08/2007, -0/+9They developed some of the worst attitudes towards customers I've ever encountered....like they were doing us a favor by letting us shop there. And, as many have commented, "They have the worst return policy on the planet"....
- vinnyvenus, on 12/08/2007, -1/+10Good Riddance. I have had some the worst customer service experience inside CompUSA.
- russellnation, on 12/09/2007, -1/+10microcenter ftw
- Rsulliv1, on 12/08/2007, -0/+9I'll miss going in there to play the new Wing Commander games... (1990 - 1995)
- hcker2000, on 12/09/2007, -2/+11It is about time. There prices suck.
LONG LIVE MICRO CENTER! - DteK, on 12/08/2007, -1/+9Good riddance
- t0ny, on 12/08/2007, -0/+8Radio Shack knows about that stuff, but they will charge you a ***** load for pretty much anything. I went there once to get an led and they wanted $3 for a single led. Also they want about $30 for the common pc fan. I wish they would die.
- Damian91, on 12/08/2007, -0/+7Retail stores are quite *****, I prefer their online service.
- xtc46, on 12/08/2007, -1/+7sales will be a little better this around. Previously, the stores could send what they didnt sell to the stores that were staying open, this time that option isn't available.
- Damian91, on 12/08/2007, -0/+6Amen to that, BB has the worst customer service I have ever witnessed.
- BrPyne, on 12/08/2007, -14/+20Who here hasn't heard about this yet? Digg me down if I'm on the computer too much.
- blaket, on 12/08/2007, -0/+6I was able to pick up my Xbox 360 Premium from the store that closed around here, the box had a banged up corner so they let me open it and test it out and gave it to me for 30% off, not a bad deal.
- blackinthmiddle, on 12/09/2007, -0/+6I'm working to work yesterday and need an HDMI cable. I see a Radio Shack and almost never go in there, but decide to try my luck. Just like CompUSA, there prices are insulting. $80 for an HDMI cable? I just looked at the lady and walked out the store.
- Fremen93, on 12/09/2007, -0/+6I'm glad they're closing. The CompUSA by my house was a joke. The rare times I went there (when Fry's was closed) they couldn't be bothered to help me. Heck I remember walking up to the cash register with a new video card and the two teenage losers working there were arguing over who would get up off their ass and ring me up. I responded by dumping the video card on the counter and telling them I'll buy it online. With that kind of service, I laughed so hard when I heard they were closing it.
- UndyingShadow, on 12/09/2007, -0/+6...and bestbuy is doing a horrible job at being a service business. Mention geek squad and see who doesn't roll their eyes.
- meed, on 12/08/2007, -0/+5Honestly when I was 12yo, I wanted to go to compusa more than any toy store, and that was back right after they had changed their name from "the software house" to Compusa. I remember going to the original compusa in addison texas, I remember when they moved to their first huge retail store, Hell I even remember dialing up their BBS back in the day too.
- vtruss8, on 12/08/2007, -7/+12An "Apple" store is just about as useless as a "Dell" or the old "Gateway" stores....
/here is comes... - TheMidnight, on 12/08/2007, -1/+6Too bad. Ours in Madison survived the first round of cuts, but I guess I need to head by and see if I can get a deal on some gadgets for the relatives. It was also one of the few places you could actually buy Mac stuff if you didn't have an Apple store nearby.
- onidraky, on 12/08/2007, -0/+5I don't think anyone here will argue that. But I didn't shop there much because Newegg was always so much cheaper. We did get an awesome deal on an Aquos on black friday, though, hopefully they've got more great deals for this store closing thing.
- KillingBlow, on 12/08/2007, -1/+6Let the clearance begin.
- krisscofield, on 12/09/2007, -0/+4Good riddance. The one here in northern VA was ridiculously overpriced and no one who worked there ever spoke english or knew anything at all about computers. Best Buy > CompUSA when it comes to customer service.
- xtc46, on 12/09/2007, -0/+4their online store will be sold as a separate entity. It actually makes a lot of money becasue when the average consumer looks online they recognize compUSA and think "wtf is newegg?"
- inactive, on 12/09/2007, -0/+4CompUSA never really had this vibe due to outrageous prices that never moved (particularly on outdated CPUs). Now Frys, on the other hand...they are all about DIY.
- killerofkiller, on 12/09/2007, -0/+4the better deals were for things like shelves, chairs and shopping carts.. it was a "EVERYTHING MUS GO" deal
- JJ2K1, on 12/09/2007, -0/+4Its about damn time! And its very good news. CompUSA did us all a favor and single-handedly got rid of huge rip off stores like Computer City, and the Good Guys. However the downfall by doing that, they created even bigger rip-off giants in Circuit City and Best Buy. Now its down to the battle of those two giants to try to reign as a monopoly, and the internet to crush it later. Gotta love this capitalistic war.
- PRlME, on 12/08/2007, -0/+4Exactly why i left. All they wanted you to do is sell TAP and printer cables. I felt bad when people would be like why is this Hewlett Packard so cheap is it a good computer? I would have to say yea its awesome just to me my 8 dollars commission..I think it was 8 i don't remember.
- neeyo, on 12/08/2007, -2/+6Anything related to CompUSA is *****, not just their service. Their prices were a joke, and their stores were just wasted space.
Saying that you prefer CompUSA to Best Buy is like saying syphilis is better than chlamydia; they're both terrible. - notman, on 12/09/2007, -0/+4It's no wonder they've gone under. When they closed out here (Michigan), the clearance prices were STILL more expensive than Best Buy and Circuit City, which were right across the street. I tried every weekend while they were closing, and their prices were still too expensive. I still don't miss the store that was here.
- THUMPerRTE, on 12/08/2007, -2/+6read and dugg from the Apple store in Los Gatos.
remember what everybody was saying when Apple decided to open their retail stores... - mediaphile, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3-1 pt. It wasn't a run-on sentence.
- winmywii, on 12/08/2007, -3/+6I prefer CC over BB.
- Lv2rgu, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3Where am I to go get screwed out of a rebate check now? Good riddance. Ours has the most miserable customer service. And the prices were lousy. At least we have a PC Club right in the same block. Maybe a Fry's someday? Nah:(
- bjornski, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3It was a "going out of business, please buy this *****" discount.
- adila01, on 12/08/2007, -1/+4I agree, Bestbuy will never have the selection that CompUSA had in Computer Parts and Accessories. I will miss this chain.
- inactive, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3I too was a pretty faithful customer early on. Somewhere along the line, and I can't remember when, they stopped being price competitive. Since they were pretty much selling retail stuff they needed to beat the other chains and since they served a lot of geeks they also had to beat the online stores. That really is a tall order and they were squeezed on both sides.
- Seaton, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3Two Words: Good Riddance!
Here are some true CompUSA stories:
4 years ago I was in the market for a laptop, did some browsing in 4 stores for deals on the ZD7000 when it first came out. CompUSA had the best deal with the rebate. This was a Friday, I even took a picture of the sale tag in the store with a camera phone. I went into the Newport News, VA CompUSA to finalize the deal, walked in with $2200.00 cash in my pocket on Saturday. I said I would like to buy this computer, but it appears the price has changed. None of the employees remembered the rebate special, and the computer was back up at $2100.00. I showed them the pic from my camera phone and the date, they still didn't believe me. I spoke with a manager who said they were in a "new" sale period and would not honor the rebate from 1 day ago. I pull the 2 grand cash out of my pocket and wave it in his face and said "I'm not *****, I'm here for a computer, do you mean to tell me you are not going to do what it takes to make this happen?". He said no. I said "you do realize, I am going to walk out that door, head across the parking lot to BestBuy and buy the computer there". He said "fine". My mom was with me laughing the whole time and shaking her head, she couldn't believe it either. I went to BestBuy, they were out of stock but had one open box. I told them if you let me plug it in and inspect it, I'll take it. They were reluctant but agreed when I waved the cash around again. The computer was flawless with no dead pixels, and a "girl's name" on the startup screen. I know what had happened, the ZD7000 is not a girly laptop, it weighs almost 20 pounds and doesn't fit in a backpack. BestBuy sold it to me for $300.00 off the $2000.00 price for being and open box and still allowed me to use all the rebates on it, bringing the final price down to $1400.00. The icing on the cake was joining the RewardZone at the same time which netted me around $170.00 in gift certificates.
My boss needed a very simple computer for his office, I picked out a basic $500.00 computer for him and looked for a decent display. The Fort Lauderdale CompUSA had a 17" Sony display model for $199.00. We went through hell trying to get the display off the floor and I don't understand why you can't just walk in a CompUSA and buy something. It takes bloody hours to get through the quagmire of management. We did buy the service plan on the Sony display as it was used, we were told that if anything happened to it, bring it in for a equivalent replacement. Well, two months later the backlight on the LCD dies, we take the monitor in. The new Samsung gloss black display is on sale, 17" for 199.00. Perfect. We should be able to walk in and exchange, even steven. WRONG. It took us four hours of various managers interpreting the service contract while we were on the phone with CompUSA head office trying to get the situation rectified. The ***** also had a rebate for the computer he had bought at the same store and wouldn't give us the rebate a week after the computer was purchased, unlike most other chains who will guarantee prices for 30 days.
I recently went to a CompUSA in Norfolk, VA to purchase a Samsung TFT display. I explained I had just bought a new "gloss black" Samsung at their Fort Lauderdale store, why weren't they stocked in VA? The employee had never seen the new "gloss black" displays and had no idea what I was talking about. They were peddling the old ***** in Virginia. Again, I ended up going to BestBuy who honored my RewardZone sale coupon knocking almost $50.00 off the price of my 22" TFT display.
I have had nothing but bad experiences at CompUSA and I feel no remorse for their misfortune. They deserve it. Good Riddance. - useful, on 12/08/2007, -0/+3thanks for the heads up :)
- blackinthmiddle, on 12/08/2007, -1/+4Are you serious? With their ridiculous mark ups, it was only a matter of time. I remember one time they were selling memory (don't remember the size) for $180 when the going rate was $90. For an extra $250, they'd install it for you. If you could get a $10 HDMI cable off of the internet for $15, they'd still be in business. But when they charge you $75 (not lying), you have what you have. I'm shocked they stayed in business as long as they did.
- AndreGiant, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2Maddox 1, CompUSA 0.
- hexydes, on 12/09/2007, -1/+3Yeah, you wish. This company will come in, take anything worth selling and stick it on eBay, and then fill the store with other crap they have accumulated (from other store closings), try to move that, sell the fixtures, and close up shop. You might find a deal here or there (depending on what you're in the market for), but in all reality, this liquidation will probably not be as good as even the partial one a year ago.
