- realunderdog, on 01/02/2009, -31/+148They are going to tax you to death and it is not going to stop until you stop it.
- Maddoktor2, on 01/03/2009, -11/+127Just remember, kids - once taxes are implemented, they rarely (if ever) go away.
Do you really want to keep paying a 50% tax once the "base" price goes back up to $4 / gallon? - DeskFlyer, on 01/03/2009, -7/+112http://i39.tinypic.com/20gz12e.jpg
- americangenius, on 01/03/2009, -22/+106it's time to revolt and have a revolution, it's mandated in the constitution
- charlino, on 01/03/2009, -6/+75Mmmmmmm. Does anyone know how much Federal, State, and Local taxesare collected per gallon on fuel right now? I do remember that only a few months ago everyone was crying about the high gas prices. EVERYTHING went up in cost due to the rising transportation costs. Groceries went up substantially because of this. Bakeries and restaurants had to raise their prices due to the cost of goods increased because of the fuel costs. Now that fuel prices are down, why hasn't any other industry made a rate adjustment? The Govt was collecting enough fuel tax at one time that Pres. Bush wanted congress to temporarily roll back fuel tax rates when gas was at an all time high. Congress said 'no.' Now, the government says it will step in and save the day with a HUGE fuel tax increase to rebuild the transportation roadways. You better believe the govt/self appointed Fuel Czar will never roll back a 50% tax shakedown when fuel prices go up again.
- twdeyer, on 01/03/2009, -0/+6150% INCREASE in tax, not a 50% tax - big difference
- americangenius, on 01/03/2009, -21/+77the govt sucks,
- inactive, on 01/03/2009, -7/+57Of course. Never let the regular guy get a break with anything. Could "da gubbamint" simply cut back on THEIR own expenses for a change? And I'm not talking about services - I'm talking about bloated overtime, and perks for managers. SHEEEEEEEEEEESH!!!!!!!!
- NickFro, on 01/03/2009, -8/+53Folks. The headline is incorrect. It's a 50% increase in the current tax; amounts to about $0.10/gallon. Buried for being a poorly written rehash of a CNN story.
- TheFounder, on 01/03/2009, -6/+42It's this economic disaster, the only "break" we got was low fuel prices.... 10% of us are scheduled to lose our jobs in the next 7 months... so you want to lay off everyone and raise their gas and tax rates? Are you kidding us? So they can give more bailouts to banks for causing this mess in the first place? Go take the money from Exxon for stealing from us this summer...
- DeskFlyer, on 01/03/2009, -8/+35Good luck with that.
- Jeepinator, on 01/03/2009, -1/+26Some people can't help living so far from their jobs. Plus, people like me live near the county border. What if I have a job that is 10 minutes away and just over that border. Bad plan.
- chronopublish, on 01/03/2009, -2/+25Who wants to bet that when gas prices go back up, they won't repeal this tax?
- tgc1, on 01/03/2009, -4/+24Let's recap shall we:
- Financial Market Collapse
- Recession
- Bailouts
- Job Losses
- Housing Market Collapse
- Job Losses
- Bailouts
- Automotive Sector Collapse
- Job Losses
- Bailouts
- Stock Market Takes a dive
- Bailouts
- Job Losses
...etc
- Increase Taxes?! Ummm.... are we on the same page? - jeffness, on 01/03/2009, -1/+20this article is a touch misleading. federal gas taxes are flat (so many cents per gallon) and my state taxes gas the sameway. Therefore, the only reduction in tax revenue is caused by an unforseen increase in gasoline prices, not a decrease.
if anything, a lower gas price encourages higher tax revenues under the current taxation scheme because a lower price means more gallons are generally bought, excepting of course that the current gas price drop is caused because americans are driving less, probably because so many are unemployed..
taxation based on percentage rather than a flat amount is a pretty dumb idea for a single commodity. sales taxes are really the only place a percentage based tax belongs. - twoboyzzmommy, on 01/02/2009, -7/+24can anyone say "use tax?"
- tgc1, on 01/03/2009, -1/+17A whole bunch of dummies are going to come in here and say yes. Being willfully ignorant of how the cost of fuel effects EVERY SINGLE aspect of their lives. And yet they continue on in their little bubble world in their heads, thinking it's just soccer moms with SUV's who are going to feel the pinch.
- Eddiecoaster, on 01/03/2009, -5/+21You appear to know what's best, lead the way.
- GRTWHT, on 01/03/2009, -8/+24Yep, we absolutely need this. We need to artificially increase the cost of EVERYTHING by increasing the production and distribution costs of EVERYTHING, even before fuel prices go back up (you're kidding yourself if you think they won't).
- NSResponder, on 01/03/2009, -4/+20"Now is a really good time to roll out higher gas taxes."
No, it's not. This is a time for government to scale back and get downsized, so that its ability to ***** up the economy is sharply reduced.
-jcr - pathouston22, on 01/03/2009, -3/+18I do belive they already do tax you to death. There isnt a 65 or older tax opt out form that I know of.
- reaper527, on 01/03/2009, -1/+16well, the tax is a flat rate, so you wouldn't pay more tax if the gas price goes up.
that being said, your right, taxes don't go away, and this new tax is 100% unnecessary. - haydukeqc, on 01/03/2009, -3/+17NO!
- Nerys, on 01/03/2009, -3/+17We sent the government nearly 26 BILLION dollars in JUST gasoline tax. not counting DIESEL tax (which is higher) and not counting any other taxes. JUST the 18 cents in gasoline tax.
thats how much we sent them in 2007
PLEASE Mr Government explain to me why that is NOT ENOUGH ***** MONEY TO KEEP THE ROADS IN REPAIR
WHY THE HELL would they need more than 26 BILLION ***** DOLLARS.
thats easy. ITS NOT Being used to repair roads.
duh! - SammyJr, on 01/03/2009, -8/+21We could start by ending the war in Iraq and cutting the military budget by 80%. Even with that cut, we'd still have a larger budget than everyone else combined.
- and303, on 01/03/2009, -5/+18Two years ago high gas prices made me abandon my interest in high performance engines and buy a tiny economical car. I can't say that I've regretted it since, even now that prices are down again. So there are two things to ask yourself...
1. If people took a little bit more responsibility, and if car companies would step up to the plate and offer us some affordable technology that is actually economical...we'd be able to go as far using much less fuel.
2. When our consumption goes down, so does the price since the market isn't as hard driven. If those fuel prices were taxed once we're "allowed" to buy an engine that gets more than 20% efficiency on gasoline, then essentially everybody pays the same price per gallon, but instead of oil companies and OPEC lining their pockets beyond comprehension...that money could be used to help our nation climb out of the embarrassing debt it is in.
Try and stay rational when you hear the word "tax". The reason it exists in our democracy is because it is (supposed to be) a way of helping us, not hurting (street lights, fire department, schools, or how taxes in Canada pay for healthcare and people are actually better off financially, etc). I feel like the last 8 years has left us jaded since our tax money hasn't done a damn thing for us. - TheScogg, on 01/03/2009, -5/+18A 50% gas tax is unneccesary and ridiculous! How exactly did we afford our transportation infrastructure from 100 years up to 4 years ago if we didn't have the money for it?!?
25-30% income tax, 6-8% sales tax, car tags, property tax, estate tax, surcharges, surfees, surtaxes, 50% gas tax...where does it end? Tax tax? The powers that be may want to seriously consider a 500% tax on pitchforks and torches if they implement a 50% gas tax. - algaeturd, on 01/03/2009, -1/+14OMG! The people might actually be able to get ahead if gas prices drop! Go take care of that ASAP! Tax the air that they breathe or something!
- dekuscrub, on 01/03/2009, -4/+17Hey moron: the 30-35% poorest Americans pay almost nothing in taxes.
Typical liberal *****.
They told us to cut back and conserve oil. We did.
Now we're gonna pay for it. Great job government. You never let me down.
They're going to tax us to death, and they're using their global warming scam as a scapegoat. - silent128, on 01/03/2009, -2/+15wahhhhhh? Are they smoking crack? They pass that ***** i am going to hunt my congressmen down and hit them.
- tschau, on 01/03/2009, -2/+14I like roads and bridges though... and there are way too many potholes around here already.
- leif77, on 01/03/2009, -1/+13Revolt and have a revolution... same thing...
- Racer20, on 01/03/2009, -0/+11Gas tax is almost a use tax. It's assumed that if you are using gasoline, you are driving on public roads. Those who don't (farmers, equipment and vehicles for use on private land only) get an exemption from gas tax.
How much do you think it would cost to monitor everybodies fwy usage? Then you'd have the paranoid contingent up in arms about big brother knowing where they are all the time. - masamunecyrus, on 01/04/2009, -2/+13I'll stop bitching about increased taxes when they stop spending my tax money on snake oil, banquets, prostitutes, and consulting companies.
- tuklaw, on 01/03/2009, -0/+11I wonder what happened to the windfall taxes they earned when gas was at $4.50. If that was all spent, I am sure most of it was not used on roadways and bridges since I have not seen any improvement at least on the places thatI drive through or see. i agree with chronopublish that this new tax will not go away even if gas goes up to $10.
- ivancuriel, on 01/03/2009, -1/+11I had to check it out for myself... that's a shame..
- reaper527, on 01/03/2009, -1/+11there is already a tax in place. the low price will result in more fuel being purchased. a 50% tax hike is NOT necessary
- ZephyrNinety, on 01/03/2009, -0/+10It's not gonna limit how much gas we buy, it's just gonna hurt us because it's something we NEED.
- Troy64, on 01/03/2009, -3/+13High gas prices are what got us into this recession, all of the ***** they are blaming it on are byproducts of what the gas and oil prices did to the economy. ie, it magnified every weakness. Our economy cannot withstand $4 a gallon gasoline.
The quickest way to get us out of the recession is to allow a sustained period of sub $2 gasoline. It will help better than any stimulus package and it costs the government -0-. - Jlaugh, on 01/03/2009, -0/+10Maybe because everyone who died on both sides was American.
- wadd, on 01/03/2009, -0/+9U.S. Federal gasoline taxes are, I believe, 18.5 cents per gallon.
- krnldmp, on 01/03/2009, -0/+9What's next? Tax on solar panels?
- sadisticmind, on 01/03/2009, -2/+11its like they want the recession to continue.
- twiztidsinz, on 01/03/2009, -0/+9Can we have a revolution without the revolting?
- BassMastr, on 01/03/2009, -6/+15The poorest 30-35% of Americans don't pay taxes. How can you give a tax break to someone who doesn't contribute in the first place? Get a bike...
I know it's always someone else's fault when someone is poor. - jamangold, on 01/03/2009, -0/+9How come we never had this problem when the gas prices were originally at this level almost 4 years ago?
- Bhima, on 01/03/2009, -1/+10These days I live in Austria. We have a vignette system, where you pay for the days you will use the autobahn in advance and affix the sticker to your windscreen. I've lived in the US off & on and I don't think that system would work at all there. You'd have to have cadres of armed special forces at every entrance ramp on every highway in the US... just to enforce it.
- cyclonesworld, on 01/03/2009, -5/+14I'll pay a 50% gas tax when they stop charging income tax. *****.
- inactive, on 01/03/2009, -2/+10In unrelated news, oxygen is to be taxed.
- reaper527, on 01/03/2009, -1/+9but when gas approaches $4 we can't CUT the gas tax? screw that.
and as others have said, the gas tax is a flat rate deal. lower gas prices means people will travel more and buy more gas. -
