- whoreable, on 09/24/2008, -0/+93People I don't trust investigating other people I don't trust.
- richmomz, on 09/24/2008, -2/+84I hope every CEO that bailed on both their company AND their country with their fraudulent multi-million dollar golden parachutes ends up in a FEDERAL POUND 'EM IN THE ASS PRISON!!!!
- Wilarseny, on 09/24/2008, -0/+72Doubt anything will ever come of this, but it's a good sign maybe someone's awake in the gov...
- hugolp, on 09/24/2008, -1/+49I bet 100 dollars ... well now that the FED is making the dollar worthless, I bet 200 dollars that they wont find anything.
- inactive, on 09/24/2008, -0/+39If this bailout passes, every woman, man and child in this country will have to pay $3000 to wall street thugs. THEY ARE STEALING YOUR MONEY IN THE BROAD DAYLIGHT. Bring back the guillotine, heads must roll for this *****.
- scabbers, on 09/24/2008, -2/+41Bush will commute any sentences, so why bother?
- bigp3rm, on 09/24/2008, -0/+35Sweet with all those sweeping wiretapping laws and data grabbing this should be a slam dunk.
- drmangrum, on 09/24/2008, -0/+29I foresee two outcomes:
1) A complete farce. A dog and pony show that amounts to nothing
2) A handful of the least connected of the bunch will be thrown under the bus to protect the others that will receive a wrist slap. - borez, on 09/24/2008, -1/+27For a real whodunit story of epic proportions, how about getting a non American independent company to audit the Fed Res bank.
FTR: The FBI won't find a thing, and if they do, they won't have a clue what they're looking at. - AlKo, on 09/24/2008, -0/+22You mean like the folks at Enron and Worldcom??
- zombiedepot, on 09/24/2008, -0/+21"Save a thief from the gallows and he will cut your throat."
"If you steal something small you are a petty thief, but if you steal millions you are a gentleman of society." - dalittle, on 09/24/2008, -2/+21The US government should seize the assets of the CEO's and upper management of these companies if we are going to bail them out. They do it to drug dealer so why not these guys too? They can start with these
Lehman Brothers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lehman_Brothers - Richard S. Fuld, Jr. (Chairman) & (CEO)
American International Group http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Internationa ... - Robert B. Willumstad (Outgoing CEO)
Fannie Mae http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fannie_Mae - Herb Allison, CEO
Freddie Mac http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddie_Mac - David M. Moffett (CEO)
Bear Sterns http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bear_Stearns - Alan Schwartz, former CEO
- James Cayne, former Chairman & CEO
UBS http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UBS_AG - Peter Kurer, Chairman
- Marco Suter, Vice Chairman - Marcel Rohner, CEO - manstein01, on 09/24/2008, -0/+19The problem with the investigations, especially of Freddie and Fannie, is that it will eventually lead back to Congress. Four times since 2001 they declined to pursue and additional oversight of the GSE's. They also passed special resolutions allowing both Fannie and Freddie to be non-compliant with basic accounting rules. Freddie, specifically, has admitted that audits have turned up serious accounting problems EVERY YEAR THIS DECADE. Yet next to nothing has been done about it until the government takeover.
Remember when the FBI found $20,000 in Congressman Jefferson's freezer? Suddenly, Bush, who had performed warrantless wiretaps, imprisoned minor in Guantanamo, and lied about intelligence to start wars, was "abusing his power."
Congress has made it clear that they will stand up for their right to corruption. - dupswapdrop, on 09/24/2008, -0/+18Hang em, Hang em High!
- hugolp, on 09/24/2008, -0/+18Keep hoping.
- chuckDontSurf, on 09/24/2008, -0/+17I'd be content with them getting stripped of all assets and forced to pay a large percentage of any future income to help repay the damage they've done. Essentially, make them poor.
- chadsmith729, on 09/24/2008, -0/+17Really it will just be another Kenneth Lay situation. A bunch of white collar criminals getting away with it because it's in "America's best interest" to keep them happy and going strong.
- purzzzell, on 09/24/2008, -0/+16nope, they end up in "federal country club prison"
- inactive, on 09/24/2008, -3/+17Will probably be as effective as the investigation of the Pentagon's missing $2.3 trillion (Rumsfeld, 9/10/01; http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/01/29/eveningn ... although hopefully without the destruction of the office and personnel of the group responsible for doing the investigation 24 hours later by "terrorists."
- EatSleepJeep, on 09/24/2008, -0/+13It's pretty easy not to find anything when you don't want to find it to begin with.
- Brian48216, on 09/24/2008, -0/+13you think CEOs of billion dollar companies would drive something as pedestrian as a BMW or a Corvette?
- ryannerd, on 09/24/2008, -1/+13I agree with @drmangrum this is a dog and pony show meant to distract from the real criminals. The FBI should be investigating the Federal Reserve; it is the FED that is killing the value of the dollar, creating inflation, recession and we're spiraling toward a second great depression. The FED is nothing more than legalized counterfeiting where we the US citizens are robbed blind and ultimately pay for artificial capitol.
Want a scary book to read this Halloween? Try "The creature from Jekyll Island (a second look at the Federal Reserve). - keyforce, on 09/24/2008, -1/+12My check stubs say otherwise.
- PeppermintPig, on 09/24/2008, -2/+13Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are already fraudulent, but that's a matter of policy. And if the FBI is okay with washington policy, then it has no business doing any sort of law enforcement because it cannot tell right from wrong. In fact, it'd probably be best for the FBI employees to adhere to the Constitution and dissolve the organization.
- inactive, on 09/24/2008, -1/+10They'll probably have to report to tennis matches early in the morning...
- carnivore0311, on 09/24/2008, -1/+10October surprise!
- inactive, on 09/24/2008, -2/+10They'll just go through the normal motions, come up with enough to prosecute a bunch of low-level management, and let the CEOs keep driving their BMWs and Corvettes and living in their huge mansions. It's the same ***** that always happens. I'm too cynical to believe that the people truly responsible will be the ones being punished.
***** 'em. Let 'em sink and make every fraudulent mortage paid in full. - inactive, on 09/24/2008, -0/+8I hope that's sarcasm. You know they don't wiretap the people that truly deserve it...
- trollick, on 09/24/2008, -1/+8Move along folks, nothing to see here. Only a few trillions were stolen. Nobody has to go to jail. It's not like some black teen stole a stereo or something. Because then I would be really outraged.
- inactive, on 09/24/2008, -0/+7Where they'll be forced to play golf without caddies... To them, it's the ultimate punishment.
- southeastbeast, on 09/24/2008, -0/+7They're all in kahootz!
- AndrewMoyer, on 09/24/2008, -0/+7HANG THOSE CROOKS!!!
(I agree though, it's just a dog 'n pony show made to distract us and satisfy us. Still, I want to see blood!) - KUKBAHLAM, on 09/24/2008, -0/+7This was a simple public notice.
When translated, it reads: Begin shredding and dumping your backups. - chadsmith729, on 09/24/2008, -2/+8Well said.
- briLo, on 09/24/2008, -0/+6Sadly I've heard that the CEO bastards that ran these into the ground may be used as consultants as they have an excellent grasp on how everything operated; and ultimately how they bloated an economy and sank the dollar.
Personally I say light them on fire and call it a day. - SteelChicken, on 09/24/2008, -0/+6lip service, nothing more.
- a2fan, on 09/24/2008, -0/+6It's undeniable that several Democrats are neck-deep in helping to bring about this situation, but it's also true that the Republicans by and large let the good times roll...
It's unfortunate that this had to happen during an election year because whatever "cure" is implemented will involve political pandering and not necessarily what is best for Joe Taxpayer or the free market economy. - snotrokit, on 09/24/2008, -0/+6Just like the TSA. More "Theater" to make you feel better about getting ass raped for 700 Billion.
- altgeeky1, on 09/24/2008, -0/+5Monetary punishments won't work... these guys all have secret bank accounts and condos in Dubai.
Sentence them to hand amputations.
Seems very just to remove their fists, so never again can they bury them INSIDE the taxpayer... - cohortq, on 09/24/2008, -0/+5The fact that this is happening is positive to hear, but there's also the fact we all know that nothing will come of this, and no one will get prosecuted.
- TheBlackOasis, on 09/24/2008, -0/+5Otherwise known as, "Club Fed".
- roddack, on 09/24/2008, -2/+7Government investing what it caused I am sure this will go some place fast......
- altgeeky1, on 09/24/2008, -0/+5fraud?
- pizpot, on 09/24/2008, -0/+5Oh, they will find a scapegoat to put on the news.
- gospe1337, on 09/24/2008, -0/+5Please send them to poundmeintheass prison--not Club Fed prison. Thanks!
- inactive, on 09/24/2008, -1/+6wouldn't running the dollar down and blowing our economy up be considered domestic terrorism? i'm sure AT&T can be relied on to supply all the records the feds will need, RIGHT?
- thebaron2, on 09/24/2008, -0/+5Bush will be long gone by the time anything actually comes of this. Has the government ever completed ANYTHING within a 3-4 month time frame, much less a major investigation like this?
- altgeeky1, on 09/24/2008, -1/+6The top 50%? What kind of statistic is it to bundle the top 2% in with most of the middle class?
You're hiding something.
Tax rates are progressive precisely because so many WRITEOFFS are allowed (writeoffs, like say purchasing a new H1 or H2 gas hog... and yeah I know they're being discontinued, but that's nothing to do with the tax giveaway). Actual taxes paid is != to income vs. tax bracket's default rate. - TurboSquid, on 09/24/2008, -0/+4Not implying anything, but out of curiosity if one where to orchestrate such an event, how much money would it take? How much would the freedoms and liberties of American citizens cost?
