- raggsat98, on 11/06/2009, -5/+33More green jobs lost to China. Looks like this leaves Massachusetts with a red face.
- bluto36, on 11/06/2009, -4/+29hmm nothing like losing Green jobs to the worst polluters on earth.
not sure whether to laugh or cry. - tuka, on 11/07/2009, -2/+18I'd love to join in your anger over the gist of the story but I have no idea what exactly your comment is supposed to mean.
Though i think you're most likely just a ***** idiot.
You know whats worst? Not the crazy Obamabots who think 1 man can/will fix everything wrong with the world/country, but rather the staggeringly retarded folks that use the same benchmark to try and make a point about how Obama sucks or how he's a nazi or what the hell ever.
Do you for a second thing McPalin would be doing any better? WITH ANYTHING!??! Delusions - Kent4jmj, on 11/06/2009, -5/+21Was the 82b loss due to doing business in Mass.?
Mass is one of the most tax and regulation crazy states in the country.
Or is it just not an economically profitable business unless it gets more subsidies? - LeepII, on 11/07/2009, -1/+11I have talked with several of the employees at Evergreen. They all agree that it was the CEO and top executives that ran the company into the ground with bonuses, pay etc. When I put this comment up on Boston.com my comment was deleted (no swearing). Gee wonder who Boston.com cares about? Definitely not the middle class.
- sh0em0nkey, on 11/07/2009, -4/+14Damnit. Why does everything have to turn in to a party war? I'm so sick of people pointing the blame.
Do you really want to know who's fault it is? It's your fault.
Why? Because you refuse to stand up to these corporations. You refuse to stand up to the politicians. You refuse to do anything but bitch. And that's more sad than any ***** political ***** you can spew out. The government should fear you, these businesses should fear losing you as a consumer.
If the people in Massachusetts were smart, they'd go down to Boston and protest for some sort of government imposed sanction against Evergreen Solar doing business in the state. Now I'm not certain that's even possible, or what the route would be - but I honestly would hope that something came out of it to send other companies a message "you're not going to get money if you are going to or have shipped jobs overseas." Honestly, I don't care what they do as long as the message is clear: QUIT YOUR STUPID ***** *****.
But even more obvious, the government should keep taxpayer money out of private companies - PERIOD. Either let them fail or make a viable alternative. - elcalrissian, on 11/07/2009, -6/+15Hmmm
$58 million to a private company, full of bloat and inefficiency, to produce a commercial version of a product that still only achieves questionable efficiency.
or
$58 million spread to multiple public universities already involved in improving the product's efficiency, so that the end product will be more commercially effective.
either way....
0 Jobs are created in the US, and everyman Joe needs to wait another decade before he can be a consumer.
At least with the schools, the social benefit will be tremendous.
how to sell it to Politicians..... Hmmmmm........
would you rather have a $58 million hooker, or thousands of $1000 hookers? - GusterBear, on 11/07/2009, -0/+9Consumers won't speak up, those deals at Walmart are just too unbeatable!
- pinchduck, on 11/07/2009, -0/+8The government here in Michigan is banking heavily on green jobs. Perhaps they've forgotten where all our other manufacturing has gone.
Note to the geniuses in government: No matter how much taxpayer money you spend to try to make yourself look good, manufacturing is still cheaper in China. - AmnesiacJack, on 11/07/2009, -3/+8Corporate America.
When will consumers speak up?
Probably when all of the jobs are gone. - silent128, on 11/07/2009, -2/+7Actually it isn't the worst, Australia over took that a few months ago. And while China's per capita is still lower then the US it is on a rapid increase and has already past the US in total pollution.
- mulligas, on 11/07/2009, -0/+5I thought that Solar Panels was an industry that couldn't be done overseas like construction? They had to build them in the area where the houses or buildings are.
- GorfTron, on 11/07/2009, -0/+5Fighting the fire while feeding the flames.
- silent128, on 11/07/2009, -4/+9Why does every article have bashing of Obama or democrats or liberals? The economy has been heading this way for a while, most people were just to ignorant to see it (or to busy pushing blame). The fact is our government (both party's) over the past 20+ years have setup a system (lead by large corporations) to sell out the US industrial system to China. We give no incentive to company's to keep factory's in the US and we do nothing to fix the imbalance. This all goes on while China keeps its currency undervalued in order to keep the the deficit growing. While you all debate pointless crap about Obama and try to place blame for everything that occurs on him realize this is still continuing and instead of talking about issues you are looking for a scape goat.
- Rioracer916, on 11/07/2009, -0/+5You fools who think this is a Democrat or Republican issue are slitting your own economic throats. This is class warfare. The wealthy are shipping jobs to places where labor is dirt cheap, environmental standards are almost non-existent, and principles like freedom are payed lip service to. All in an effort to marginally increase profits!
The Democrats and Republicans are both signing trade deals and giving incentives for American jobs to vanish to 3rd world countries. While you all sit here and fight with your fellow working man, the ones at the top are sheltered from any blame because they have successfully divided and conquered the working class. You people are so caught up in ideological partisan bickering that you can't see the real threat to your futures right in front of you.
Maybe instead of standing up to your fellow American over issues that ultimately don't effect you personally or economically, like gay marriage and the war on drugs, abortion, and twisted interpretations of the word "socialism"; you might actually stand up to corrupt politicians and multinational corporations that are selling your futures for pennies on the dollar. All these other issues are window dressing compared to the economic issues at hand.
Some of you people seem too ignorant to understand that America will never fully recover from this depression. These jobs won't come back. This isn't a normal business cycle now that the labor market is officially global in scale. There are winning countries and losing countries. Better do something NOW to hold onto the jobs that are still clinging to this country, your apathy is destroying your future. - lbzfoxracingsmp, on 11/07/2009, -1/+5The most important thing you can do is read the label before purchase. I'm sure thats been said many times before, but keeping your other half away from the christmas section(where everything is made in china)might be the hard part. lol
- bluto36, on 11/07/2009, -2/+6SOLD to American!
- bossm4n, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4I expected as much, which is basically part of what I said in a reply above. It's incredibly unfortunate as corporate criminals like these only make it tougher for legitimate businesses to secure grants and loans. Essentially, they've stolen taxpayer funds, and are now fleeing the country. I hope somebody goes to jail for this.
- inactive, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4I have some of their panels, good quality.. At least until now.
- inactive, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4The government should be implementing solar growth in this country.
- InactiveUser, on 11/07/2009, -3/+7At least China are investing billions into the technology and supporting business with decent road a rail infrastructure. Can't say the same for America where non existent "clean coal" is king.
- dstz, on 11/07/2009, -4/+8China in 2006 was 96th CO2 emitter per capita, far behind western countries, and a lot of those emissions were for products that are are bought by western resellers for western consumers. Care about pollution in China? care about jobs lost to an efficient country? stop buying Apple products for a start !
From a buyer perspective, for Chinese researched, Chinese produced technologies, i have a better service from them than from my own western European country, from the manufacturing to the mail service. They are extremely serious, punctual and polite. They have many reasons to be proud as a people and probably never ever will pollute as much per capita as western country do, and will be on the forefront of new energies without a doubt.
They are bound to rule the technological, economical financial and cultural world in the next decades as they Chinese factories are capable of the best service and quality, insofar as it is not asked specifically by western consumers and resellers for price issues, like it is often the case.
Our bitter jealousy, like from parts of Europe toward America when it took the lead, will make us have a lot of cheap fun at their expense. Will make us wonder if we must "laugh or cry". But the joke is on us. - inactive, on 11/07/2009, -3/+6"The government here in Michigan is banking heavily on green jobs."
....because the government in Michigan is made up of idiots. - Dezl0ck, on 11/07/2009, -0/+3@Kent4jmj is on to something. Mass. has high taxes, but the solar sector is still in its infancy. Lack of economy of scale is one problem with profitability. I've been trading green energy stocks and in my opinion they're good for day or swing trading, but not investing. I've been tracking Evergreen Solar (ESLR) and First Solar (FSLR) and they always tank after earnings are announced, even when the news is fairly good.
- allisonV12, on 11/07/2009, -1/+4I guess America is only good at consuming.
I guess beer and weed will be the Prozac of the unemployed poor, they need to legalize so the day blurrs into the next.
I'm depressed from reading digg, wonder what time the market opens today.
When a solar panel manufacturing company flees because of greed or incompetence America isn't on the ropes anymore, its down for the count...really how the hell do you screw that up.
Solar panels... - Ferretman, on 11/07/2009, -7/+9Wow! That sucks.
How's the Hopey-Changey thing working out? - tao52nyc, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2It's certainly a black mark for those who've been ranting about how "green jobs" and alternative energy subsidies were going to be the savior of the US economy.
- GrammerPants, on 11/07/2009, -0/+2Really depends where you live, and the label laws. In Canada I can eat something that is made with "100% Canadian produce" and it all came from China. Why? Because the second it enters the country it counts as Canadian.
- PandaBearShenyu, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2Bad news, the box, all the parts, and the manual of this set are all made in China. They shipped it to America were it was assembled together by a minimum wage worker on an assembly line. AMERICA ***** YEAH!
- the6walkers, on 11/07/2009, -1/+3What a bunch of MASSholes!
- Wrangler76, on 11/07/2009, -2/+3So if you don't buy Made in China items, which suppliers are going to rise up to take their place? American ones? Hell no. It'll be the next cheapest country. The only way would be for Americans to demand buying American-made things and that would never happen because the costs would jump astronomically.
- bossm4n, on 11/07/2009, -1/+2While a few have mentioned Obama in the comments, the article is not partisan in any way. Not sure why you think so. I agree with your other points though. There are simply no incentives to keep these corporations here in the US. In fact, it's quite the opposite. The real story here, in regards to the company in this article, is they were given state funds to build their new facility, but after posting a huge loss last quarter are going to pull up stakes and take the manufacturing to China. So in addition to those tax dollars absolutely going to waste, now the company is going to remove the jobs entirely from the market. Sounds to me like the company did not do proper due diligence and/or have a poor business plan/model and did not anticipate their market. It's a bit like someone on welfare taking out a loan to buy a Ferrari knowing full well they can't pay it back.
- inboxnews, on 11/07/2009, -1/+2GusterBear: Exactly right. Good to see somebody gets it.
- turnpoint, 11 hr 42 min ago, -0/+1Yeah right, China...They are well known to take care of the environment
- scottpigeon, on 11/08/2009, -0/+1Every time I see one of those billboards a little part of me dies.
- PandaBearShenyu, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1This is not Obama, China, or Evergreen's fault, it's your fault as wasteful Americans who have no environmental conscience. If they have a healthy market in the U.S. to which they can sell solar panels to break even, I'm sure they'd rather stay. But y'all'd rather drive your SUVs, water your lawns, and most important of all, take your 40 minute showers.
You favor the convenience of wastage, and that is why all these companies are leaving, they don't have an obligation to put up with a nation of hypocrites that say they want to greenify everything yet never bother to do anything as they'd rather spend the premium being raped by gas tycoons and buying the latest apple products to compensate for their own lack of charisma. - GrammerPants, on 11/08/2009, -0/+1Are there any?
- Jeez, on 11/10/2009, -0/+0^ What does Americans not buying solar panel have to do with them moving the factory to China. How many Ipods, cell phones or Computers are built in America? 0.
It is simply cheaper to produce in China due to its lower taxes, do not have to worry about minimum wage or environment laws. If you want the jobs to come back ask the congress to lax those rules. - silent128, on 11/07/2009, -1/+1Very true. We are all at blame for what is occurring and i don't see it ever getting better people just rather post blame or get a good deal then fix the issue.
- thesinner, on 11/07/2009, -3/+3Word!
- damack, on 11/07/2009, -4/+4You act like it's only green jobs going to China.
Most other industries have left the US what do you think is going to happen in the coming months as the recession resides and companies finally have money to make moves to a better place?
End of the day if you run a business and you've seen the weakness of an economy as soon as you get the chance to shift your operations elsewhere you will.
It's not exactly rocket science a lot of companies are going to be making that change over the next few years. - allisonV12, on 11/07/2009, -2/+2Because China would put you in a detection camp and ship you back to America. They have a immigration policy
- QQQQUUUU, on 11/08/2009, -0/+0no, i mean American cars built in America
- GusterBear, on 11/07/2009, -2/+2It would give Lou Dobbs something different to report:
"Tonight, as always, our top story is on illegal immigration folks, only it's Americans illegally entering the Peoples Republic of China."
Cold day in hell before that happens. - Wrangler76, on 11/07/2009, -2/+2Yeah, way to understate something. China's per capita is MUCH, MUCH, MUCH lower than the USA's. It's not even comparable. Their total pollution is higher simply because they have much more people, so that is a completely unfair comparison. There is much more room for improvement from the USA. Not to mention that a lot of the pollution in China is a result of American MNC pressure for them to keep costs down by breaking environmental laws.
- GusterBear, on 11/07/2009, -2/+2"How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror."
With every purchase, we sell ourselves out. - jerimiar, on 11/08/2009, -0/+0i just ordered tool set actually made in U.S even more expensive than made in china but i rather buy American made than cheap low quality made china
- GrammerPants, on 11/07/2009, -1/+1American cars? You mean you ones mostly built in other countries?
- Bigblah, on 11/07/2009, -7/+6Here's a suggestion: you cry, and I'll laugh at you.
