- 10001110101, on 10/11/2007, -0/+82Anyone else find it interesting that they made the distinction for "licensed nuclear reactors"? Are there unlicensed nuclear reactors that I should be worried about?
- synth7, on 10/11/2007, -1/+65if you look at Nuclear there is a Triforce in Arizona
- kelchm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+53Well, I've been running my reactor for a few years now and haven't had any problems.
- datek2517, on 10/11/2007, -1/+40What's with that creepy eye in the background? It freaks me out.
- DariusMonsef, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24I would have guessed Hawaii would have rated better considering they are windy tropical islands with lots of sun and huge waves...
- brianbennett, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18Dormant, no longer active plants would fall within the realm of "unlicensed."
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Are you the jerk who's been leaving his nuclear waste out on my curb? Listen, buddy, use your own garbage can!
- Buckiller, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19No wonder California sucks dick energy wise.... they have like no nuclear power?!?!
- rlh1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12This map is positive proof that Wyoming really blows.
- Buckiller, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12And alabama.
- JudgeDredd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Actually it is 14, but Zion had two reactors shut down and Dresden had one reactor shut down. So it is only 11 reactors at 6 plants. We like our nuclear power here.
- Error601, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Who put that crap together? The overlay of resource potential is completely nonsensical with power station and power line maps.
- kelchm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Maps of nuclear power around the world: http://www.insc.anl.gov/pwrmaps/
- blackjack75, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Nobody else sees this eye.
Still freaked out? - Jaynix, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Kudos to MSNBC for putting some of their effort towards gathering information about our energy situation.
- harvinator24, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9look at the ***** msnbc is skewing, "a near catastrophic meltdown of the no. 2 reactor," it was close to a melting down but only because of the incompetence of the two dumb-asses running the place. they failed 3 times that day and could have prevented the whole thing.
second "the bush energy plan calls for renewing nuclear plant construction, citing improved safety records and technology.
This is the only thing i have ever agreed with bush, we need nuclear energy badly, just use the map and look at coal, coal is extremely bad for the environment. And the United States posses the largest amount of nuclear material. Why not use this extremely safe material that can use very little and run for a long time.
"critics remain skeptical, and there is no plan for disposing of the waste these plants would produce."
*****, critics? who are these critics, ralph nader? Don't get me wrong he would be a much better leader then we have now but he doesn't know anything about nuclear energy. These plants are extremely safe and tens times more well built and "safe against terrorists." And no plans on storage? are you serious all you have to do is is research yukka mountain and the transportation network that the country has set.
Msnbc please try and do a little bit more research when you post highly interesting maps online. - mightyarmenian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6interestingly, the only energy category which is (relatively) evenly distributed is oil
- tidu, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8And new york.
- KiTchMe, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Illinois with 13 nuclear reactors??
- Buckiller, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Gulf of Mexico....yes
- rlh1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Probably cloud cover.
You have lots of moisture coming up from the Gulf into the south east.
I've been to Atlanta 5 times and it has always been pouring rain. - ffleming, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5The coal in Southern Illinois is pretty much unusable due to its high sulfur content. Too bad the map isn't of "energy resources we can actually make us of."
- rushiku, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Yukka Mountain? Are you serious? While, yes, you're correct, Yukka Mountain is a plan for storage, it is not a plan for disposal. Kind of like when you hand your kid an empty beer bottle and say "Here, take care of this for me", well, not quite, because the beer bottle won't poison your kid and all his friends.
I like nuclear power, don't get me wrong. We just need find a way to deal with the used fuel that doesn't involve 'saving it for later'. - mikeon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Maybe the generators won't do so much good with all the hurricanes around there. That's my guess at why the south east is so poor in potential.
- tnoy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Why were there no numbers provided for coal and oil? It would be interesting to see how their numbers compare to the rest.
- slimnickyy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Wonder why there's no map on the potential of tidal power?
- softboiled, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6haha wow, check out the natural gas lines near lousiana/texas. is that where most of the US' gas comes from?
- sulthernao, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4You know that nuclear fuel can be used over again, multiple time in fact. It is just the the US has a ban on it of some sort. And if we really need to get rid of it we can always send it on a space shuttle and dump it in the sun.
- darkphoenix939, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4must be the beans
- mahler, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I would like (and was expecting) to see a map of energy usage. It would be nice to make a competition between states: "which uses the least amount of power per person"? And base the funding from the government on those numbers.
- obnauticus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4OMG:

- DiggMasterJ, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3What, you guys didn't know Hyrule is a county in Arizona?
- oosnoopy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Wow, I didn't know the US leads the world in hydro electric power.
- cursivearmySC, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2they're talking about what WILL happen in 2001...
a little old, man. - wannabenomad, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It wasn't a meltdown. It was an "incident"
Don't you read the lovely pamphlets that Exelon Nuclear sends us every year?
Seriously though, just because something almost coulda maybe happened at TMI 28 years ago doesn't mean that everyone from Middletown is giving birth to flipper-limbed babies. Actually, I like living here. It's fun to fly through the plumes from the cooling towers when you take off or land at HIA. - boxmonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yeah I was surprised the costlines of Florida weren't lit up with wind potential; there's a constant strong breeze coming off of the coasts.
- Syvl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Sorry for the comment jacking but cursivearmySC brings up a good point- if you read the info on wind energy, they're talking about what WILL happen in 2001!
- Jeeverz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Interesting map .. but stupid colours
- thepotter, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Don't you remember how the government was more concerned about the oil and natural gas drilling stations during Hurricane Katrina than it was with the victims?
- BryGy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1There is a nuclear power plant near Cedar Rapids, IA. Its not listed as one of the nuclear sites. Does that mean its not a licensed plant? I doubt it. It means that MSNBC's reporting is shoddy.
- szembek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What about wood? Used for home heating mostly.
- harlowsmonkeys, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3The electrical lists a few high voltage DC lines. Anyone know the story on those?
- airship, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Inaccurate. They missed the Duane Arnold nuclear plant here in Iowa. Makes me wonder how much other stuff they missed.
And the coal deposits they show in Iowa are high in sulfur so they can't be burned without extensive cleaning, and they must be strip-mined. Do you want to strip mine some of the richest farmland in the world just to get to some low-grade coal? I can show you strip mines from the late 19th and early 20th centuries that left gaping holes and dead land covering hundreds of acres of what should be productive crop land. - tunapez, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I was ignorant of the video game reference, so digg me down. Digg me down for mistaking this for a useful site of meaningful interaction and knowledge sharing, too.
PS: Don't like anti-ethanol rhetoric? Then don't read this and Digg me down some more!

(Yeah yeah, do your worst on this comment, diggers.) - jboeke, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's cuz solar could never possibly work here...
- szembek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1use the reply button.
- runner1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1wikipedia is your friend
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hvdc - pcnetworx1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Where does Colorado get its power from anyway? I'm curious. Do you know at least the major power provider in the state I could look at?
