- Protonz, on 10/17/2009, -6/+246These ***** ads make ***** noises after I accidentally mouse over them. Even when the browser was not the focused window somehow.
*****, I hate their movie now, and this ***** makes me want to go back to blocking ads. - mavantix, on 10/17/2009, -11/+156I have no idea what you're talking about. AdBlock Plus.
- Ghostwo, on 10/17/2009, -2/+111Does anybody else find these stupid flash WWTA ads annoying? If you leave a few digg pages in the background long enough, some of them will automatically start playing sound after 5-10 minutes. It isn't all of them, but when you have 4 of them on a page, and 4 pages open, that's 16 chances. I've probably seen ~240 of these ads in the last 3 days, and it's happened about 8 times...
- Nyaos, on 10/17/2009, -0/+107At the library it's all quiet, I don't have my computer muted. I've been on Digg for maybe 10 minutes in a different tab, then SUDDENLY THREE ***** ADS START PLAYING AT ONCE. *****.
- Aeron, on 10/17/2009, -4/+93the ad automatically plays its ***** sound and pisses me off. I will avoid the movie BECAUSE the ad pissed me off so much
- Jiib, on 10/17/2009, -0/+80Happened to me too bro. Annoying ass add went off when I was watching an episode of Lost on Hulu, it freaked me out...with all the stupid roars and kid noices. >.>
- KarateMedia, on 10/17/2009, -0/+71Can't digg you up enough. It's incredibly annoying to have those ads go off, even when I'm in another tab. It's just about to drive me away from digg, at least until the ad campaign is over.
- taikahn, on 10/17/2009, -11/+67You look at ads? I don't.... just looks like fake digg posts in a banner ad, not something I would click on. Oh, and the audio that auto plays is pure *****.
Movie looks great though, thanks to Spike Jonze. - stoned420247, on 10/17/2009, -1/+56I personally don't care about the adds. But when it auto plays the trailer is pure *****.
- Subduction, on 10/18/2009, -1/+51Worse, it's more than just mouseovers -- they start spontaneously playing after 15 minutes of absolutely no activity on the computer.
My browser happened to be on Digg while I was watching TV in another room -- suddenly my speakers went off like an air raid siren completely on their own.
If this isn't fixed soon I'm staying off Digg until it is. This is Digg's responsibility to fix. - neonoodle, on 10/17/2009, -0/+41Worst ***** ads. A couple times now I've left Digg open and music from the stupid ads started blaring like 10 minutes after the page loads.
- skelooth, on 10/17/2009, -1/+39That auto play audio ***** needs to die. Otherwise it's fine.
- rocknog, on 10/17/2009, -0/+36What the hell is it with digg? I would otherwise support ads, as they pay for maintenance, but digg seems to have a horrible track record of allowing just awful ads. I mean, we just had the yellow teeth ads, and digg has a long history of movie ads that automatically blast out audio whether you want them to or not. Is anyone doing any followup whatsoever to make sure the ads are appropriate for digg?
I'm getting ***** sick of it. This is supposed to be a classy website, but it seems we keep getting the most obnoxious, tasteless ***** imaginable shoved down our ***** throats in advertising. - mithrasinvictus, on 10/17/2009, -9/+42Ads pay the bills. I don't mind ads, as long as they are not
1) popups
2) autoplay with sound
3) disguised as content.
Adblock just helps drive masquerading ads as sontent. - weratestuff, on 10/17/2009, -0/+31Fourth'd.
- AManWithNoName, on 10/18/2009, -1/+31I don't hate their movie (Because it's a good movie), but I agree. They could get rid of the sound and I'd be a much happier digger. I do, however, applaud the ads such as the ones this article talks about that involve the actual articles. It's great to see people trying ads that are entirely inobtrusive, and actually are designed to fit in with what's already there.
Advertisers need to learn, the modern online consumer doesn't want ads that are annoying and unavoidable and flashy. We want ads that tell us gently about their product. That's also why google's ads are so popular, they don't shove the product in our face, they set them down neatly and let us make the decision to click them or not. - Subduction, on 10/18/2009, -0/+29Since Digg management hasn't addressed or even apparently noticed the autoplay problem, I think we can reach one of two conclusions:
1) This is sanctioned by Digg.
2) They all run adblock, even when browsing their own site.
Shame on them either way. - subtheorist, on 10/17/2009, -10/+39It's win/win/win - A win for Digg, Its sponsors, and best of all - Digg users.
This article is in reference to the new ads in the top right-hand block of the front page. They take 3 submissions by real Digg users and place them in that spot as a promotional tool. IMO - Why in the world would Digg users complain? They basically gave us yet another awesome way of getting our content some exposure on the front page. How is that a bad thing?
On a side note - I agree that the flash ads are too much... and way over the top. Especially because they're auto-play. I don't think the Digg community will tolerate those. - Ford_Prefect2nd, on 10/17/2009, -1/+29This ad has annoyed me so much that I am switching back to Firefox (from chrome) so I can easily install adblock. I use to avoid such things because Ads pay the bills and I thought that was fair, but Digg went too far with audio playing on its own. I didn't know what it was, I was on another page and sound started, I had no idea why. I could not believe Digg would pull something like that. I was not sure how I felt about the embedded ads, I thought they were annoying, but I was willing to give Digg the benefit of the doubt, but THIS IS TOO FAR. Additionally, I have seen a... suspicious amount of articles about trailers and such for this movie, I would expect some, but .... It does make me curious, in conjunction with the audio ad and embedded ads, as to their legitimacy.
It makes me sad to say it but ***** Digg. - yaazz, on 10/17/2009, -1/+28Same thing happened to me, except I was in class.....
- philbar, on 10/17/2009, -0/+25I'm having the same problem. The first time it happened it freaked me out. I thought my computer was possessed or something.
- latexsolarbeef, on 10/17/2009, -4/+28i don't care how much money it makes, it's annoying as hell, and i think it has the potential to ruin digg. i envision a bleak future where all content on digg is driven by advertising......
- mithrasinvictus, on 10/17/2009, -0/+24Top right is fine. Mixed in with frontpage content is not.
Autoplaying sound ads are so annoying i'll be turning flashblock back on for digg. - panic, on 10/18/2009, -0/+23Yeah, the audio will start playing when I'm on a different tab and haven't looked at digg in several minutes. It's infuriating. I'm not sure what I want to boycott more, digg or this movie... Well here I am writing a comment on digg, so that probably won't happen...
- Cerebron, on 10/18/2009, -0/+23The movie may be brilliant, it looks cool, but their ads here have engendered pure hate on my part. When I hear of the dialog from the ads, I feel like hitting things and wish whoever is responsible would die.
- trouserslacks, on 10/17/2009, -0/+22I've turned adblocking on again to get rid of the auto-playing flash ads. I think using those are a really bad decision and they make me spend mcuh less time on the site because I don't want to hear those things start playing and then have to find the tab to close.
The inline ads?... it's not a horrible idea... but the ads themselves are garbage dating and muscle building ads. They may as well be for vi4gr4. - sdipaola, on 10/17/2009, -3/+22I really hate the ads that pretend to be a digg entry 3 down. it is just sleazy stuff and below digg.
- bigp3rm, on 10/17/2009, -0/+19So annoying. I was sitting here enjoying my coffee. Then WHAM my speakers are blaring that crap. Scared the hell out of e.
- judicar, on 10/18/2009, -0/+17Same here, I had Hulu going and suddenly I was hearing this movie ad in the middle of the show
- Subduction, on 10/18/2009, -1/+17Could we please get a Digg response on the autoplay issue?
- inactive, on 10/17/2009, -0/+16Sorry, but next to ads that cover 50-75% of the screen, ads that play audio are about the gayest ***** thing on the net these days.
- beej2099, on 10/18/2009, -0/+16I left my browser open when I went to sleep last night, digg happened to be one of the tabs. Was not amused at being woken by the sound of some kid screaming let the wild rumpus start.
- HisNoodly, on 10/17/2009, -0/+15Autoplay audio has guaranteed I will never, EVER give them my money. Hell, I'd be tempted to torrent the thing specifically to seed it and keep other people from giving them money, either.
- luisglz, on 10/17/2009, -9/+24In my opinion, these new ads are a step forward from the ones that appear inline with the front page stories since they're user-submitted and placed on a box apart from the rest of the headlines. This makes them feel more like a simple, honest attempt at advertising something with content that might actually interest me.
Hopefully, if this kind of ads become popular they could get rid of the annoying graphical ones on the front page. - oxdeltaxo, on 10/18/2009, -1/+15Three words: ad block plus.
- HisNoodly, on 10/18/2009, -0/+13No, it autoplays after a while. Maybe it's a bug, but it's a super ***** annoying. and common one.
Here's an idea: bury the damn links until they fix their *****. - ShadyCroquet, on 10/17/2009, -1/+11Yet here you are posting in the comments of Digg...
- Tai1983, on 10/18/2009, -0/+10I was laying in my bed with a digg tab apparently still open(but not focused) on my computer when, out of no where, my speakers suddenly started blasting. Extremely annoyed, I jumped up and started closing each tab one by one to identify the ***** website. I was shocked to find out that it was digg. I'm very disappointed they implement this kind of trashy marketing.
- Subduction, on 10/18/2009, -0/+10Same. It's awful.
- vizerei, on 10/17/2009, -0/+10I'm in the exact same boat as you and did the exact same thing. I love chrome for most uses but the adblock extensions mean I never uninstalled firefox, and I only visit digg on firefox now.
Those stupid ads have played when I'm on the phone for work and at other inopportune times. Enough is enough. - borez, on 10/17/2009, -0/+9I'm still confused, do these add appear as front page digg stories in some way.
Before I get dugg down, I use adblock+ so this is a totally genuine question. - runner108, on 10/18/2009, -0/+9Was watching football.. was soooo confused when all that audio started.. I only guessed it was the digg tab and closed it as soon as possible.. ANNOYING
- eanbowman, on 10/18/2009, -0/+9They're the most annoying ads ever. Sorry.
I browse digg with several article tabs open and for some reason the sound from the video ads triggers when I'm doing something on a completely different tab - letting out a blast of sound through my speakers in the middle of the night.
No ***** thank-you. - Chewie67, on 10/18/2009, -0/+9I do block ads.
I applaud Digg for letting users vote on ads in the main content.
I detest them for allowing this crap. Ads should not make noise - EVER - unless the user clicks a button to turn on the sound. - TEdwardK, on 10/18/2009, -0/+9I got the same thing and wrote an e-mail to the Digg support team about it. The next day I got some ***** response telling me it was fixed. About an hour later the ad starting blaring that damn music louder than anything else with audio i had been watching. Just like a TV commercial the volume seems to be maxed out. Quite irritating
- portnoy, on 10/18/2009, -0/+8I've never really cared about the ads on Digg, but that wild things ad is totally obnoxious. I leave my computer on pretty much all the time in the other room and it took several instances of that damn thing before I discovered what it was. I use NoScript but normally have it leave Digg alone but now I have Digg filtered with nothing running that I don't need to see the page.
- roijen, on 10/18/2009, -0/+8I just got it to play audio automatically. I opened the digg homepage in IE8 (i don't have an ad-block on it) right after reading the article, to see what the fuss was, and then transfered back to chrome to continue reading comments on this article. Halfway through your comment the kid started screaming.
Couldn't have been left alone for more than 15 minutes. IE was inactive at the time and my mouse was no where near the top of the screen so it couldn't have been a mouse ghosting bug. - inactive, on 10/17/2009, -10/+18ades...your terrible grasp of contractions aside...why is he an ***** for pointing out that without ads, the internet would NOT EXIST.
- gavintlgold, on 10/18/2009, -0/+7If you are using Adblock plus with the subscription to Easylist you will not see any ads whatsoever. Flash or images.
- roxgod666, on 10/18/2009, -2/+9I agree, but i can't help but laugh when you say Digg is supposed to be a "classy website" when half our articles are about porn, bacon, and lolcats.

What is Digg?
