- cyberstall, on 10/11/2007, -9/+182I used to be FOR threaded comments, but this implementation is wayyy too bulky, and honestly, I miss being able to see everyone's comments on one page without having to do any extra work-- makes me feel more like part of the community.
- rebrad, on 10/11/2007, -26/+196Right on the money. Digg needs to fix the fix that wasn't needed in the first place.
- Navicerts, on 10/11/2007, -23/+160They kinda lost touch with the user base. I don't think it was popular opinion to change to threaded comments, meanwhile; wheres the picture section?
- Scyth3, on 10/11/2007, -8/+128Threaded comments are a much needed improvement, just the current execution and implementation is way off (sorry to the developer's that spent many hours on it though).
- mikelieman, on 10/11/2007, -7/+104I'd reply but it's pointless.
- shadus, on 10/11/2007, -4/+66The old commenting system was broken, but this is NOT the answer. We don't need ***** ajax in our comments, we don't need extra clicking, this is just raw ***** and an example of how just shoving tech at things is a bad idea. This is absolutely craptacular.
- Chompy, on 10/11/2007, -8/+64It looks like these guys forgot one of the most important rules of.. well, anything. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. This is a nerd site. Nerds don't like bloat. Lose it, or you're going to lose traffic.
Did Digg get bought by Adobe while nobody was looking? - UtahApocalyse, on 10/11/2007, -5/+48Why cant digg just show all threaded comments?
- 98acura, on 10/11/2007, -1/+39This one sucks far worse than the old one. The nesting is fine, the collapsible ***** is what sucks.
- scoobydoo84, on 10/11/2007, -26/+51This new system SUCKS, STINKS, IS HORRIBLE!! LOVE DIGG BUT GO BACK TO THE OLD SYSTEM!!
- xjebbx, on 10/11/2007, -7/+31Kevin I think the community at least needs an explanation.
Please... - thailand1972, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23How can I find my comments if they are buried as a reply? I have to scroll down, find the reply tree, expand it then I can see if anyone's replied to me.
Before I just typed Ctrl + F and entered half my username.
The new system looks cool. Unfortunately it sucks for usability and that's way more important than looking cool.
Don't fix the not-broken thing. - ScottyMo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23ha! I found you!
- z00k, on 10/11/2007, -3/+24Seriously though the new comment is way to... "Boxy". I hope they do fix this, or at least let user's be able to choose WHICH comment system they would like to view the comments in... Otherwise I smell another May 1st in Digg's future.
- Raian, on 10/11/2007, -3/+21I have to say I don't think the comment system is intuitive.
You can see "view 3 replies"... but you have no idea what's in there-- it's effectively like a garbage bin.
They should have kept everything the same, and added a hidden third tier... that at leasts shows the number of diggs and the users name. - 98acura, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19This comment system really friggin blows. 90% of what I do on digg everyday is read through the comments, which are usually better than the related articles. Now it has been made impossible.
*****. This. *****. - toast1226, on 10/11/2007, -5/+21im in ur commentz, hiding my wordz
- SpectralSounds, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18I replied to your pointless reply. I just like to hide my comments. Pay no attention to me, move along... nothing to see here.
- lhnz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15I agree. Everybody digg me if you hate the "Hide x reply to this comment (most popular has y diggs)" box. It takes up way too much space and should be as tiny as possible.
edit: Also the comment box should only be visible when you click reply to this comment as most of the time I am just reading comments and not replying to them! - Otto, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Threaded comments would be great. It's all this other added crap on top of them that sucks so much.
If they just implemented threaded comments, and *only* threaded comments, then it would rock. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -8/+22Almost as dumb as Yahoo eliminating their news topic comments. I think they lost half of their users.
- Twinked, on 10/11/2007, -8/+21New comment system stinks! I had to double check to make sure I wasn't on Slashdot.
- andre75, on 10/11/2007, -5/+17Call me ignorant, but I don't dislike the new system.
Often time an article received a lot of positive comments until some individuals invaded the thread and started posting comments to the first comment (showing up almost on top of a page), trying to discredit an article.
At least this way things happen in an orderly fashion.
Yeah I know, its cumbersome to unfold all comments. I have seen worse though.
Ever since Gmail I have become used to threaded discussions. It doesn't bother me, quite the opposite, I like it. - rejoined, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Seriously, now when a story starts getting popular (like this one, right now) and people are posting comments as we speak, the time to fetch a batch of comments becomes a joke.
This is getting seriously irritating now. - Zagger, on 10/11/2007, -6/+17it can...the option is at the top of the comments..."expand full tree"
- dasilva333, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12theres no way i could hate this comment system any more than i do now
- TrevorNoble, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13I'm hiding.
- dshPls, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11I have like 10 reply boxes on my screen right now, and the color scheme is too...vivid I guess you could say, the older one was softer and EXTREMELY easier to read.
- Brss45, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Like what I'm doing now, this ability to reply to a reply is awesome, something that many diggers have wished they were able to do, instead of "@ Otto". However, the fact that you have to click on link after link inorder to see these replies is worse than having to scroll back up to Otto's post to see what someone was replying to.
- bluephoenix, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14this is worse then what fark did recently, I mean fark may be fuglier now but at least it was still functional...
/ I guess we'll get over it - Fritzel, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14The only real headaches I have with it is that there aren't a "Expand this entire thread" or "Remember Expanded Threads" settings. If they would impliment those I would find no problems with it
- sofaKing812, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12My fingers are bleeding from all the clicking.
- Antipop, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9I can't read the replies anymore with my Wii... and I always thought there should be a button somewhere to explode all the threads at once
- lordtyros, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12Wrong. Discussions will no longer occur because simply loading and navigating the comments page is such a hassle. Instead, fewer people will comment than would have with the old system.
- MikeonTV, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13Ugg. I can't even read the comments anymore.
- ISIfunded911, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8One big inconvenience is that when I reload the page, I do not see my own threaded comments, I cannot use CTRL-F to get to them fast. I need to remember the threads I commented, find them and then open them to check if someone answered to my comments. That is very very annoying.
- malaak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Dugg up for the New Coke comparison - I am thisty for Classic Digg
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8If I could sum up the new Digg commenting system, that word would be BURDENSOME.
While the previous system was not perfect, at least it was workable, and the community adapted to the lack of threadless messaging by posting the names of each person they were replying to in the message.
The ajax stuff is way overdone here. The object of good web design is to make the content or the message stand out, not the technology. I don't give a rat's bum about the technology, just make it easy to use.
I used to think that threaded messaging was important, but this is just a mess. In fact, at least with the old style, you could just post once and respond to several people in that one message.
I'd recommend going back to the old style of messaging with just two small changes: a Bold tag and a Blockquote tag. - fober, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Shhhh!!!!! I'm hiding in here.
- meawake, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8I am not sorry for the developers... just sorry for digg that implemented a bloated cumbersome comment system. Threaded system, yes. Threaded that has no default, you have to click and wait 5seconds to see. no way. it should have a default of fetching all the comments and displaying them. letting the users chose.
I for one, liked the be able to see ALL the comments on one page. Only threads were really needed, and maybe the options for the ones who wants to hide them. - h3ndrix, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11The New Coke thing was probably the best Marketing trick ever done. Piss off your fanbase, release Classic Coke and watch yer sales topple over Pepsi. It worked too because everyone remembers how much they hated new Coke.
Maybe they will release an dugg.com ? - CraigJ, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10When an organization starts to think they know what's better for their customers than the customers themselves, that's the beginning of the end. I'm all for nested comments, but this system is painful and, well, just sucks. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should...
- fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Except that's not quite "full"... you still have to click 6482 times on threads with replies if the thread is buried.
- Subcranium, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13Welcome to bannination.com, the home for the disgruntled, wayward, and banned. Every time there's a bad redesign, bannination gets more users.
- detrate, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12oh shut up, you aren't going anywhere
- GamerzCorner, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Agreed, This fixes a lot of comment abuse and all it needs is to be refined.
- jspegele, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Because up until yesterday, Digg was flooded with comments about how they need threaded comments. Now they have threaded comments and Digg is flooded with comments about how they don't need threaded comments. WTF? Digg users are turning into prima donnas.
- FyreGoddess, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7That's the crux of it, too. If they weren't buried by default ~*with no way to set preferences*~, it wouldn't be nearly as much of an issue as it is now. All I want right now is to be able to have a default setting to always expand all comments instead of having to load a new page for the comments to be shown in full.
It renders the back button almost useless and without a direct link back to the upcoming section/sort where I started, it makes the entire process more difficult. - Charlotte_Web, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Great, now I see that they've removed line breaks from the posts as well.
Hey, who doesn't love to read a great big block of text? - thewump, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9See also "The Perfect Store", the book about the early days of eBay.
