- thegamingguy, on 03/10/2009, -3/+72Cheap yes, but safe no. Plus the weather is one of the big draws for retirees.
- wilf_brim, on 03/11/2009, -3/+51You're kidding, right?
- Wreckage, on 03/11/2009, -6/+48Detroit is a tourist attraction, much like Baghdad is a tourist attraction.
- Zippo, on 03/11/2009, -1/+34Who the ***** would retire to Detroit? This is an Onion article, right?
- inactive, on 03/11/2009, -4/+31Yeah, but then you're stuck in Detroit.
- bincoder, on 03/11/2009, -3/+29The ghetto at a billion degrees below zero?
Not even if a house cost $6.
They say that Mexico is the place to go and maybe they're right. - ironeus, on 03/10/2009, -2/+22A few overcast cloudy/rainy days beats hurricanes in my book. Southeast Michigan's hundreds of inland lakes are often overlooked and are gorgeous in the spring/summer. As for the golf courses they are plentiful, just can't play em year round as in Florida. Take up skiing in the winter and you're all set. Come on in, I'll be the 1st to welcome you.
- kedohmen, on 03/11/2009, -6/+26Two reason why Detroit won't be the retirement destination: It's ***** Detroit! Located in ***** Michigan!
- inactive, on 03/11/2009, -0/+19Yes you are right, and it is not racist propanda... look at these black nationalist blithering idiots in action:

These are the racist blacks who run Detroit. Sickening. No wonder people are running out of that hellhole. - Bloodwine, on 03/11/2009, -0/+18Why stop there? I'm going to retire to Ethiopia so that my retiree dollars stretch even further!
In all seriousness, cost-savings only goes so far.
You'll see more and more retirees settling in the rural midwest and south. In fact, states like Arkansas are already a retiree destination. Slower pace of life and low cost of living, and relatively safe. - inactive, on 03/10/2009, -0/+16It has also become the place of choice for vacation homes.

- seanstuart, on 03/11/2009, -0/+16Retirees like Florida because it's 80 degrees in the dead of winter. Sorry, Detroit - a booming retiree real estate market aint in your future.
- jameskong15, on 03/11/2009, -6/+19Remember everyone, white people need not apply, Detroit is run by racist blacks.
- Suzilla, on 03/11/2009, -0/+13Tell all the restaurants to start offering Early-Bird specials. They'll start showing up in droves.
- inactive, on 03/11/2009, -0/+13It's an African-American tradition like Kwanzaa and very popular with the African-American communities nationwide.
The folks participating crowd themselves into a stolen car and drive by a group of people on a corner or porch, see someone they dislike or do not like the looks of for some reason; roll down the windows and shoot as many bullets as they can in their general direction while hitting as many bystanders as possible. Then they speed away. All of the people who saw it then shout "No Snitchin'".
The people from the neighborhood hang up bears and light candles next to the chalky lines.
Celebrate multiculturalism. - JamesBondJr, on 03/10/2009, -0/+12and what are the golf courses like?....gotta have the beach weather too
- ngmcs8203, on 03/11/2009, -0/+12For some reason I don't see my 82 yr old grandpa taking up skiing with his two artificial hips and brand new knee.
- SpoonMSU, on 03/11/2009, -0/+12Fix the crumbling roads, the near lack of any form of mass transportation, and the massive local governmental corruption and idiocy and then we'll talk.
- bobish, on 03/11/2009, -1/+11wait a second... is this a spoiler for lost?
- etx313, on 03/11/2009, -2/+12Detroit, No. Michigan, Yes. But houses are not cheap outside of the city. I live off 8 mile and paid $120k for my house, and it was a steal. But a lot of small, but still vary nice homes can be had in my neighborhood for about $60k.
On a side note, everyone bashing Detroit get over it. Most of you have never been here. And the actual city of Detroit can get bad in a lot of neighborhoods but it's nothing worse than I've seen in the ghettos of chicago. Everywhere has it.
Truth is, Michigan is awesome from a cost of living perspective and this is what the article is about here. And we have the largest coastline in the entire country so nice waterfront homes can be had at a reasonable price. Especially in Oakland county north of Detroit, which used to be the richest county in the country. I love it here. - Bloodwine, on 03/11/2009, -3/+13I'd take Detroit over Mexico right now.
- Stuffburger, on 03/11/2009, -1/+11There are so many reasons retiring to Detroit is a horrible idea, esp. the houses that are cheap.
1) Cold as hell most of the year. Old people don't deal well with cold.
2) Crime
3) A $6000 house is going to need $50,000 worth of repairs, or strong handyman skills. Retirees typically have neither.
4) No real mass transit.
That said, if the economy keeps on tanking I think it might happen anyways. - notman, on 03/11/2009, -1/+10Typical comment from the uninformed. The suburban areas of Detroit are very safe.
- Valleye, on 03/11/2009, -0/+9Yes you pay taxes regardless of its occupancy.
- Y0tsuya, on 03/11/2009, -0/+9I failed to see anything derogatory in his post.
- cheese0089, on 03/11/2009, -0/+8But people want to go to florida...
- etx313, on 03/11/2009, -0/+8We have a number of great golf courses, the Buick Open is here in Dearborn every year.
- spyd3rweb, on 03/11/2009, -3/+11Detroit has an isolated population of minorities that don't integrate, don't value education, don't have any money, and have a high crime rate. It all adds up to a big area of town you don't want to go anywhere near if you value your safety. Seems like the problem is when you let minorities isolate themselves into big communities they revert back to their original cultures and see no reason to adapt modern civilized culture. Some people just lack the desire to advance and better themselves.
- altgeeky1, on 03/11/2009, -0/+8People are mocking you, but you are correct.
1) Mexico is VERY sparsely populated - mostly concentrated around Mexico City
2) Up to 25% (12 to 20 million) of what's left of the rest of the population is living here in the US, illegally
3) Government corruption favors the wealthy, who pay fewer taxes
4) A very high female to male population
5) It's a reasonably safe place to live. Just know where you are going and how you will get there.
6) Riding cross country is not advisable, but the government does try to protect tourists and keep criminal gangs away from becoming drivers in the taxi or bus system
Of course, if you stick only to the safest places which tend to speak English, you will miss out on some things. That's no loss for many American ex-pats, who live abroad not so much just for the experience, but to evade US income taxes. - Wogger, on 03/11/2009, -3/+11the suburbs of Detroit are generally pretty safe, they're ranked as some of the safest places to live in the US.
- bigtoes, on 03/11/2009, -1/+9LOL !! What a way to finish off ones life . Spending the golden reflective years in Detroit .
- kvanderslice, on 03/11/2009, -0/+8Take him to... Detroit.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! NOT DETROIT!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! - Dustin00, on 03/11/2009, -2/+10"Detroit's not so bad, just look at Chicago!"
LMAO - jameskong15, on 03/11/2009, -0/+7Detroit hit it's peak way further back than 20 years ago. Young, Kilpatrick, etc helped push this city into the trash. After all the years of mismanagement and scandal, nobody wants to help Detroit because the place is run by a bunch of ignorant racists that only care about black people, and that's how its been for some time now. Nobody is going to invest in a place where the black council members scream at you for trying to bring business because supposedly the workers "don't look like us." Nobody is going to want to live in a location where only one group gets to speak up at council meetings while the other groups get shouted down and told to leave. Nobody wants to do business in a place where money is sucked dry by welfare programs, scandals, mismanagement, and not invested into the community. Nobody wants to live in a place where people complain over and over about "you people" taking over or holding others down. Etc...
The people in Detroit need to fix their own ***** before anyone on the outside even considers doing anything. - spyd3rweb, on 03/11/2009, -4/+11Anyone digging this down has never been to Detroit.
- Yander, on 03/11/2009, -0/+7He was probably referring to the city council.
A recent example
http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/ ... - PhairOh, on 03/11/2009, -0/+7I'm sorry etx313, but with statements like this I really feel that you're living in the past.
I lived in Oakland county for the first 18 years of my life and I'll always think of it fondly, but right now the entire southeast part of the state is dying. The last time I was there (Thanksgiving, my mom still lives there) I remember driving down Telegraph road (a major artery, for those not from there) and all I saw were signs that said "For Lease" or "For Sale". Many businesses are closed or closing. Jobs are near impossible to find. I'm sure houses can be had for cheap because everyone wants to get out.
I have only 1 good friend still living there. He graduated law school last spring, passed the bar with one of the highest scores in the state, and began working at a very good firm with a 6 figure salary. He just found out yesterday that he's getting laid off.
The state is dying and my advice to anyone there without deep roots to get out while you can. I doubt the economy in Michigan will ever recover in my lifetime (I'm 26). - slickrocktrail, on 03/11/2009, -0/+7Ice Skating for Seniors is huge
- SpoonMSU, on 03/11/2009, -2/+9Yeah, well, ***** Ohio.
- protogenxl, on 03/11/2009, -2/+8Detroit is too Cold
- AnthonyC, on 03/11/2009, -1/+7Until the cops give a ***** about protecting anyone, Detroit isn't becoming useful for anything involving people moving there.
- REBECCAFRIEDMAN, on 03/11/2009, -1/+7well, cheap is the new black so this just might work ;-)
- AmyVernon, on 03/11/2009, -0/+6Did you read the article? It's definitely a bit tongue-in-cheek.
- LilKimmiDee, on 03/11/2009, -3/+9i live near the detroit area. to me, it's a NOT a VERY GOOD IDEA. Every single day i hear on the news someone getting shot, murdered, raped, drive-byed, ect. Detroit is in horrible condition. You cant go to a Taco bell without it being hidden behind bars and bullet proof glass. When we have people to start retiring, what do you think would happen? They would just get murdered and their things stolen and they can't even defend themselves, unless they have a gun of course. But still! It's sickening to my stomach how much Detroit sucks. You can't even go for a walk around detroit because you would get mugged, because it sure almost happened to me! If it weren't for my guy friends, I probably would have got hurt in the process.
Bottom Line, most ridiculous, absurd, dumbest idea EVER!
You can't talk about moving there unless you have been there! - randersontt, on 03/11/2009, -0/+6...another idea is to turn the entire city into a humongous federal prison - remember "Escape from L.A." - you evacuate all the residents, put a wall around it, and then start dropping convicts in by helicopter and let nature take its course.
- jessemoya, on 03/11/2009, -0/+6It won't happen, but theoretically it'd be good for Michigan. Detroit needs to diversify its economy, and an influx of people who don't need careers, but have a small amount of money to spend could be just the thing to get things going.
I say COULD, but having grown up and lived in and around Detroit I would only bet that government officials would piss away any real opportunity this city ever comes across. - 83JB, on 03/11/2009, -0/+6haha! You, my good man, have provided me with the best laugh of the day :D
- etx313, on 03/11/2009, -0/+6It's soo cold in the D!
