- AmyVernon, on 02/06/2009, -1/+153This is really amazing. The FICO score is one of the most important pieces of information the consumer needs to know; and a credit agency won't reveal it? wtf.
- mrgarci1, on 02/06/2009, -0/+114FTA: "Given that Experian advertises the most on TV pushing their website FreeCreditReport.com with the singer whose credit score got ruined, it's ironic that they would close off access to this important piece of information."
I KNEW something was up with that guy.... - glockman69, on 02/06/2009, -1/+103You should be able to see your own credit score for free whenever you want or need to. Screw Experian they are just trying to make a buck off everyone by forcing you to sign up for Freecreditreport.com which is not free by the way....

www.annualcreditreport.com
The only 2 real places for your score and report - drmangrum, on 02/06/2009, -0/+48FYI.
AnnualCreditReport.com is the site you want to use. Last time I used it, it was completely free and you don't have to sign up for ***** "credit monitoring." - DangerCollie, on 02/06/2009, -0/+43CRA's are the devil in my opinion. Your information, your personal data, has a certain dollar value attached to it. Yet here are three companies setting the rules for who can see what about you. Sometimes they play by the rules, sometimes not. It's almost always a good deal for them and their business customers, almost always a bad deal for you.
If you want easy credit and want to make your information easily accessible, you should have the right to do so. If you don't want anyone checking your credit record, you should have the right to block them. Not go through some bizarre process to freeze your reports, which still allow some access, which you can't control. It's your data, you should be able to regulate who has access to it. It's really about who owns information about you. - KSUdesigner, on 02/06/2009, -5/+46They'll reveal it, but only if you pay them first.
- dave122, on 02/06/2009, -9/+43Really? Cut the fat by giving the government control? Really?
- smacksaw, on 02/06/2009, -22/+56Protest to our Congressional representatives? What? Why should they even be regulating these companies? They shouldn't exist. No corporation should have such control over anyone's personal information.
The answer isn't to ask your congressman to make them give you your credit report. I'd rather have gov't keep track of my credit than a corporation. Besides, it's not like gov't can't get our credit reports anyway. Cut out the extra layer of fat from these corporations! - waynemr, on 02/06/2009, -0/+29In case anyone is interested...
The FTC's info on free credit reports - http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cr ...
The only place the FTC says to get your credit report - https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp - malonie, on 02/06/2009, -2/+30Creditkarma.com to get the a picture of your score for free, not accurate but close
- bobjohnsonmilw, on 02/06/2009, -1/+28Tyler Durden had the right idea about these pricks.
- drmangrum, on 02/06/2009, -0/+23Most of us are adults. You can type the "I" in *****, we won't be offended.
- SRSco, on 02/06/2009, -0/+22AnnualCreditReport.com also does not give out FICOs.
- lovek, on 02/06/2009, -1/+23Except for myfico.com ... which is the site referenced in the article... the site upset that they won't be able to display Experian scores.
- jamangold, on 02/06/2009, -1/+22Why is it that I have to jump through hoops to get my own credit score, while someone who purchased my information and is using my credit report to send me junk like mortgage refi offers can get ahold of my information anytime they want?
- NinjaBoy, on 02/06/2009, -0/+20I just came to say that myself. I was scared that it was some scam to steal my info so i didn't join it for over a year. Now looking back i'm quite upset i missed out on all this info for so long.
Mint.com and CreditKarma.com are the two best money management sites i have ever seen. In fact id say they are better than any consumer/regular joe accounting software i've used.
And no i'm not affiliated with either site, just upset i waited so long to start really looking into my spending trends and want to spread the word to others. - SkippyDoorknob, on 02/06/2009, -0/+20Can I charge it?
- hhbuyer, on 02/06/2009, -1/+20Stupid system. Consumers should NEVER EVER have to pay to look at their credit file or scores. This is such bullsh*t. Can you say class action time?
- daddymcguire, on 02/06/2009, -0/+19Thank you for the links. Spam is so refreshing
- RichMUrrills, on 02/06/2009, -1/+19In the UK I believe this would be illegal under the Data Protection and Freedom of Information Acts which, as far as I understand it, mean that by law if you ask a company to disclose any and all information they hold on you they have to provide it.
(Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong there).
CRA's are of course a bunch of arseholes who probably treat those acts with the same amount of disdain they have for their customers. - andyb747, on 02/06/2009, -0/+17"Fair Issac"
the name should be changed to "The Ministry of Financial Slavery" - lsocoee, on 02/06/2009, -2/+19the most important thing for me to know is that someone hasn't stolen my identity. Yes, FICO scores are important, but I'd rather know if someone bought a car under my name.
- esteeh, on 02/06/2009, -0/+15FREECREDITREPORT.COM is suuuuuuuuuuuuuch a scam!!! It seriously is false advertising and should be an offense.
- hokie47, on 02/06/2009, -0/+14It is free one time per year. It should be 24/7365. It is your credit.
- hawksfan03, on 02/06/2009, -1/+15http://creditkarma.com
100% free NO strings attached - snotrokit, on 02/06/2009, -0/+12but the credit report that you receive for free is not complete. You have to pay for that. The whole credit reporting agency scheme is a complete rip off from top to bottom.
- epadafunk, on 02/06/2009, -0/+12they paid for it and you didn't. it's a simple answer, though it's not a fair one.
- absentmindedjwc, on 02/06/2009, -0/+11freecreditreport also charges you $15 a month if you dont cancel their "complimentary" service right away... freecreditreport.com is not all that free.
- peruvianidol, on 02/06/2009, -0/+11I used to work for a company that sold credit reports to the mortgage industry. The scores on our reports were generally lower than what consumers would see on a report they received from one of the credit bureaus (by as much as 100 points, in some cases). We would get calls from the mortgage companies' customers demanding to know why their score was so low. IMO, the scores you receive from the bureaus are only good for determining your score relative to everyone else - they're not necessarily the same scores that lenders would use to determine your creditworthiness for purposes of a mortgage or car loan. They also look at other criteria besides your score. Definitely use annualcreditreport.com to make sure everything is accurate but, for the most part, paying extra to see your score is pretty useless.
- davebg8r, on 02/06/2009, -0/+11I do love the scam these companies run. Gathering information about you, against your will and starting without your knowledge. They make little effort to verify the accuracy of the information and they spread information about you, again with no regard for accuracy. If they spread false information about you, they have no accountability. Yet when you ask them what information they have obtained about you, without your permission, they wont tell you or want you to pay for it.
Is there any reason these companies should be allowed to exist under these rules? - drmangrum, on 02/06/2009, -0/+11FreeCreditReport.com is a front for their main money making scam. They force you sign up for a "free trial" of their credit monitoring service. The problem is, in order to cancel that service you have to be extremely persistent and in some cases threaten litigation in order to stop them from charging your card.
As far as I know, MyFico and Annualcreditreport are independent sites that are actually helpful. - inactive, on 02/06/2009, -5/+15Aren't these the ass holes who run those terrible free credit report commercials? I'm not going to post the actual URL for fear of actually giving these jerk offs free publicity, but they not only do some of the most terrible viral advertising but are incredibly unethical. We are talking about people worse than the"'Limited edition Barack Obama coin" people. They are really that bad.
Eat the rich. But only after force feed them the ***** credit reports they force upon the rest of us. - BlacklabelSAR, on 02/06/2009, -2/+12Notice the Corporatism?
- djmccormick, on 02/06/2009, -2/+12Wow, coincidentally I just recently got an actual free credit report (not that freecreditreport.com BS) and they wanted to charge me $5 to get the FICO credit score.
As a side note, if you've ever considered giving freecreditreport.com a whirl... don't. They give you a "free" credit report but you're signed up for a monthly service that monitors your credit and sends you alerts. The only way to cancel this monthly service afterwards (which you'll be charged for a month of no matter what) is to call them and let them hassle you with 5-minute scripted speeches. - shibainu, on 02/06/2009, -1/+11if you want to see your credit score, please enter your credit card #
- KSUdesigner, on 02/06/2009, -1/+10Maybe they would screw up and make everybody's credit scores higher. Yeah, like the government would ever make a mistake that wasn't in their favor.
- siszam, on 02/06/2009, -0/+9Under federal law, you’re entitled to a FREE copy. Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion have to provide you with a free copy of your credit report, at your request, once every 12 months upon your request. If thy deny you they are breaking the law. Here is how to do it.
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cr ...
They don't have to provide your credit score though. Wamu credit cards use to provide your credit score each month. Now that they've been taken over they are going to stop that. Maybe some other card companies provide it. Shop around. - NinjaBoy, on 02/06/2009, -0/+9Well it must be nice to have $100,000 in cash to buy a house.
- nesagwa, on 02/06/2009, -2/+11Good luck with that house or car or any other major purchase.
- jpkrautw, on 02/06/2009, -2/+11I recommend www.creditkarma.com . It's free, and it's a good place to start shopping for loan/credit card/mortgage rates based on your credit score.
- inactive, on 02/06/2009, -0/+8Paid for that bicycle in cash, did you?
- tribecom, on 02/06/2009, -0/+8Americans are so stupid to feel like they "deserve" everything under the sun
Dug down for being a moron. I "deserve" access to my score if for no other reason than their miserable record of accuracy. - SpoonMSU, on 02/06/2009, -1/+9I logged in just to digg you for mentioning Mint.
- inactive, on 02/06/2009, -0/+8Using a credit card does not mean you accept any ideology of debt. Don't be stupid. Pay off your cards every month. They are a convenience, not a lifestyle.
- jonwise80, on 02/06/2009, -0/+8Why should I have to pick only one item? I generate this information, it should be available to me!
- KSUdesigner, on 02/06/2009, -2/+9We should request bailout money to pay for our FICO scores.
- inactive, on 02/06/2009, -0/+7I signed up for freecreditreport.com years ago (way before the irritating commercials) only to find that they were charging one of my cards $11.something a month.
I didn't catch on to this because they "disguised" the charges to look like service fees from the credit card.
I finally caught on when I looked them up on the BBB to find that they were in trouble for having sketchy fine print.
So yeah, use AnnualCreditReport.com as mentioned above. - absentmindedjwc, on 02/06/2009, -0/+7that is not a free service of annualcreditreport.com. The only free service for that site is, as its name implies, your credit reports.
- inactive, on 02/06/2009, -1/+8In the UK it is also illegal to lie in advertisements. here in north america its almost illegal to point out the lies.
