- airwalkery2k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+242Hey. It's not stupid. It's... COMCASTIC!
- TheADOGuy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+95Another stupid Comcast move. I already went to satellite for TV because they couldn't get their $h1t together.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+86A T1 line is only 1.544 mbps, which translates to about 300KBPS.. your school is getting *****.
- jcaino, on 10/12/2007, -5/+69i think you mean comcraptic.
i used to work for them - they sucked even when i got free internet.
as bad a company that verizon is.....FIOS all the way, baby! - VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -2/+59@warpfox:
You have half a dozen broadband ISPs to choose from? What sort of Candyland do you live in? - DrewBlood, on 10/12/2007, -3/+50Wasn't it already established that their cutoff is 200GB?
- cankillar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+41It's 200 Gb over a period of 1 month.

http://digg.com/tech_news/Comcast_admits_bandwidth_cap_200_GB_month_and_is_a_moving_target - jcapogna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36They said it was a moving target. So next month could be 150GB. You have no idea until your connection gets shut off.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+34Maybe while they're at it they can scan their damn customers' SMTP traffic and do something about the zombie machines that spam worse than any other ISP we get hit with.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34"A T1 line is only 1.544 mbps, which translates to about 300KBPS.. your school is getting *****."
What system are *you* using? There are 8 bits in a byte, not 5.14. It's more like 193 KB/s max. - RonAcierno, on 02/07/2008, -1/+30These cable providers really piss me off. The amount of money they charge for cable and Cable internet is so over priced and for the most part its your only choice. Then after you are paying over 100 bucks a month between cable and internet they bitch about this. Also im tired of the ***** service you get from these guys ( Time Warner, dont know about Comcast).
- exabytes16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26I think it's time to light up some more fiber.
- jcapogna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25You know that 80 page contract you didn't read and blindly signed at 10pm on Tuesday night when the cable rep showed up 8 hours late to install your internet? Yah, its in there.
- stealth210, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24T1 is about 180KBps, not even 300. Would have been much better to give them a cable modem @6Mbps.
- WarpFox, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28LOL. I will use as much damn bandwith as I please. If they send a letter, I will continue to do it. If they disconnect my service, I will just go to one of a half dozen other ISP's, cable or DSL, vying for my business.
Seriously, if it's customer abuse- just go somewhere else. There's a million awesome deals for new service. - NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20And by bandwidth hogs you mean people that use what they pay for.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19The problem with that is lack of competitors. Where i live you have two options, one is Comcast and the other is SBC DSL which blows for speed. Be nice if more providers were readily available.
- therippa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16sidenote, but still somewhat relevant....
Who the ***** do they think they are recently adding that advertisement bar to the bottom of my guide menu?!? I pay $150/month for cable and internet, so I don't need ads on my guide. I just called to complain, and the guy on the phone said he's gotten a few calls, and they report them to marketing. Call and complain people. - jcapogna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Maybe he's downloading 1080p movies from a legal distributor that he paid hundreds of dollars for. You can't correctly assume he is doing illegal stuff.
- CheezIt9109, on 10/12/2007, -10/+25T1.... Yeah. That's *wonderful*.
They offer my parents random disconnects (difficulty: Not router, wiring, NIC, OS, or application based), roughly .8Mbps (8/10, not 8) down on a good day, and charge more than Road Runner (Time Warner) where I live.
I get ~5-8Mbps down, have had a single outage in 2 years, and pay $30 a month.
Screw comcast. They suck dick (at least in the Eastern MA region). - leonbev, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Misleading advertising and crummy customer service... It's Comcastic! :)
- harrison5394, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12They may be dicks but at least they aren't COX
- jcapogna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11@olik,
Speak for yourself. Cox has limited my bit torrent speed to 1-3KB/s. And people are beginning to notice that video downloads from certain legal video sites are getting slowed down too. I'm thinking Cox doesn't like their own internet service competing with their cable service. - ronito, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I don't remember anything in the agreement about "excessive use".
- gldfshnpcklejar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16So what is the natural average of bandwidth use? With streaming EVERYTHING these days it's got to be raised up. Is that 550gb a month I'm guessing?
- Farik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10This seems to be a regurgitation of The Consumerist report weeks ago. It even quotes the same guy...
http://www.digg.com/tech_news/Comcast_Unlimited_Service_not_so_Unlimited (3084 digg's) - jjb123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Should have been a while ago, we paid billions in taxes 10 years ago to start the companies off but they just pocketed it.
- jcaino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9you know - for as many zombie boxes that are on their network - you'd think they'd do something.
i work for a web host - and they are constantly blocking our servers when customers forward mail to their comcast accounts - sometimes for only slightly higher than the average amount of e-mail delivered - even legit mail. - aussieNickuss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Jeez....I thought my (just under) 15GB a month download average was massive!! I pay 79 a month (in Aus) for that. Now I feel ripped off reading these stories!!
- jersey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9This is pretty old news ...... they've been ***** me for several years now ....
why dont you read one of the 120 page threads over here: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,15784791 - drlha, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14200Gb over what time period?
- dirtyfratboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I switched to Comcast last week, because I didn't want to sign a contract for DSL service. Bad choice. I've had more problems with connectivity since then than all the problems I've had with DSL combined... after a year. Calling customer service doesn't do *****, because every one of them has "no idea what is wrong." So, instead of constantly resetting the modem, I've resorted to stealing wifi from my neighbors. Comcastic, my ass.
- Uranium118, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Change to a ISP who doesn't screw the customers. I use 500GB per month and I don't pay any extra, my bandwidth is only limited by my maximum speed and HDD storage capacity.
- tafty86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8From Comcast 'Terms of Use';
Prohibited Uses and Activities; ii "post, store, send, transmit ... information or material which a reasonable person could deem to be objectionable, offensive, indecent, pornographic ..."
So accessing a porn site is ground for termination? And who decides what is objectionable?
I have Comcast in Northern CA and have actually been happy so far. But I have gotten a few emails reporting my BT usage. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Comcast sucks - always has - always will.
Raining out?
Sorry - cable is down.
Need support?
Get real. They are still trying to figure out what a TV is.
Security?
Sure. As long as the kid down the block isn't running a packet sniffer. It's great sharing the same data pipe, huh.
Great speed?
Yeah. During off peak hours when no one else is online.
Price?
Wow - 9.95 a month for 6 mps! Oh wait. Then it goes to 42.95 a month. Gee, that's as reasonably priced as their cable service. LOL - and now they are going to start throttling people with no clear cut means to determine whether you "qualify" for this new "feature". I guess they'll have to can those "Slowsky" ad's huh? LOL
It's bad enough dealing with these assheads for cable - you'd have to be a masochist to sign up with 'em for broadband. - wounded625, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7you do realise that watching a lot of videos online (youtube, metacafe) and streaming music (myspace, purevolume, last.fm, pandora) add up gigs fast. especially when your using bittorrent...to download "linux".
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9...Porn?
- compgeek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I do sales/tech support for earthlink all the time we get ppl switching from comcast cause they got screwed.
- DrewBlood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This isn't an option for most people. I live in a city of about 175k people and the only ISP offering anything over 1.5Mbps is the cable company unless you're paying for corporate access. My mom lives in a bigger city which is limited a bit by geography and her ONLY option is Camcast or dialup. There is a very limited range of options for many of us.
- leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7
This isn't really a big deal until they start colluding with or bullying other ISP's into following suit. - yunus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think that was an estimated usage amount per month not a definitive line. It sounds like a lot of bandwidth for the average user but if you host multiple Linux distros in torrents that can get eaten up pretty quick.
- parax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6They've been doing this for years. They were doing this when I was employed as tech support for them 4-5 years ago.
Q: How do you know if you're in danger of violating Comcast's rules?
A: You signed up for their service. - CompPete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yes, this has been a circular discussion for years. A quick search on broadbandreports will show thousands of posts on the topic.
For reference, here's the Comcast Terms of Service:
http://www.comcast.net/terms/use.jsp
And yes, its in there...
"You shall ensure that your use of the Service does not restrict, inhibit, interfere with, or degrade any other user's use of the Service, nor represent (in the sole judgment of Comcast) an overly large burden on the network." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Then get a letter from MPAA/RIAA for downloading from the least secure source online.
- hackajar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I just upgraded to commercial service on my Cox Cable. 10mbs + no port restrictions + static IP address + 4 hour on site service. They don't care how much bandwidth I use, just as long as I pay the bill.
How much is the bill? Well it's $240 extra per year. To me, that's worth it.
$69.95/month - Commercial grade
$39.95/month - Residential - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I understand Comcast's need to monitor excessive usage, but they get scumbag status by refusing to state what is indeed excessive.
- DrewBlood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Hey wbc1228,
http://digg.com/tech_news/Comcast_admits_bandwidth_cap_200_GB_month_and_is_a_moving_target
jcapogna is right, it's a moving target, but 200GB is the estimate. - Hellmark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I hate how ISPs refuse to even give an estimate of what is seen as "excessive usage". I've been shut off numerous times by my ISP (sadly only game in town), for excessive usage, for as little as 1 gigabyte, upload and download combined, in a 48 hour period. They threatened to cut me off permanently because I used 20-30 gigs, again upload and download combined, in a month's time.
- Xorp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Last month I downloaded about 220Gigs... no letter! Damn! It's my life mission to get a bandwidth warning letter now.
Oh well, maybe next time... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5God, how I wish Google would get into the ISP business. The toilet part of it aside, TiSP is exactly the kind of thing I'd hope for: 32Mbps down, 8Mbps up for $24.95 a month...*drool* Though they don't want to deal with the regulations that come with being an ISP :'(
Hell, team up with EarthLink: Google lights up its dark fiber to act as a backbone for Earthlink's network; and EarthLink acts as the front-end, delivering the last mile through wireless or what have you; Google profits by collecting a share of monthly fees from EarthLink and/or by serving ads to all EarthLink customers. -
