China _ █ USA - erhanaltay, on 04/22/2009, -6/+246China is growing but I think too many people are forgetting it is still a majority poverty stricken place with little in the way of stability.
Sure several dozen coastal cities are modern and international but the bulk of the people are still subsistence farmers. - x1soundgarden1x, on 04/22/2009, -20/+251Hey folks, how 'bout we use some basic knowledge of statistics here.
THERE IS NO SCALE ON THESE GRAPHS. That means they are completely meaningless. And it's more than just looking at it and saying "oh that red bar is roughly 3 times the size of the white bar." Because, if the scale the numbers they are working with are small (i.e. industry = 1000 factories) then a country with 1/3 as many could easily catch up in a short time as china builds a new coal plant a week. Conversely, if the total number were 1 million factories, then being three times shorter on the bar graph would mean you were decades behind the other country. So, this chart doesn't tell you at all how far or close the shorter graph is to catching the taller one, and as such, I don't see why this is helpful or diggworthy.
This chart is meaningless and is buried as inaccurate. - Latinbaseballer, on 04/22/2009, -11/+202we got bombs, they got gold, hmmm.
- Greengoo, on 04/22/2009, -17/+165I for one enjoy the ability to surf the web without filters, and to post whatever the hell I feel like... don't you?
- zantos420, on 04/22/2009, -1/+142clearly we should bomb their gold
- AmnesiacJack, on 04/22/2009, -24/+110China's best weapon against the American people is the American government.
- Gojirra, on 04/22/2009, -9/+94China is not our enemy.
- notoriousbob, on 04/22/2009, -46/+131China vs. United States: A Visual Comparison (the real story)
...........China: 8==D
United States: 8========D - Dugglous, on 04/22/2009, -9/+83But that's only because China doesn't have 10% of its population as black people.
- kazakia, on 04/22/2009, -6/+78Sad how the rate of HIV/AIDs is higher in the US but the rate of death is higher in China.
Dugg for the Comparison between Nuclear weapons between the two. - shadebane, on 04/22/2009, -11/+75If we used child/slave labor to produce and export most of our goods we would have a better economy too.
- scottbaez, on 04/22/2009, -19/+78Funny that our government can have far more expenditures that a communist government that ostensibly provides all of one's needed services (including healthcare), and still pretend like our system is superior in every way. As my university's budget faces the chopping block, this makes me wonder where the ***** our taxes go.
- atomicj, on 04/22/2009, -1/+58I love how it concludes...
- Mike17102, on 04/22/2009, -32/+84Most of the diggiots love pretending that they are somehow not free and that they are oppressed by "big brother" or whatever other nonsense word is the buzzword for it this week. They still bitch and moan about Bush and bla bla bla, its comical. Some people lives just arnt complete unless they can convince themselves they are in some great struggle.
They wouldnt last 10 minutes in China. - Platina, on 04/22/2009, -62/+114Not so much liberty.
- DarkBlueAnt, on 04/22/2009, -6/+57Yeah, but patriotic Americans think any country that becomes as powerful as we are is automatically a bad guy. Especially if they're (Que scary ghost music) Communist.
- doommachine, on 04/22/2009, -0/+49...and we need to do it before they gold our bombs.
- executorzz, on 04/22/2009, -3/+51Guy, china has made a lot of progress but you haven't experienced true liberty. #2 is a very important part of liberty.
Doing whatever the hell you want and just wanting to live is not liberty it's complacency. Liberty entails responsibility. - webXL, on 04/22/2009, -4/+44They should have included the Economic Freedom Index:
United States: #6
China: #132
http://www.heritage.org/Index/Ranking.aspx - QuackMasterDan, on 04/22/2009, -4/+41That's a nice chart showing how rapidly China is advancing in economic production. The road to riches begins in low-quality exports (cheap toys, raw resources, and small electronics) to large electronics (TVs) and machinery (vehicles and industrial tools), through high end goods (pharmaceuticals, robotics) to the ultimate profit maker of services (banking/investments, selling knowledge, and unexplored advancements). The chart appears accurate in comparing the two nations (for the parts I am knowledgeable of), but desperately needs some numbers attached to the bars.
Just as the twentieth century was predominately influenced by the United States (Beginning after WWI and definitely after WWII), it appears the twenty-first century will be China's. Though the Great Leap Forward was a flop, it appears the nation is finally progressing into a superpower. - 8ballblack, on 04/22/2009, -7/+42Those patriotic Americans are called rednecks.
- schemax, on 04/22/2009, -0/+31north korea must be the most awesome country in the world then...
- Rain12913, on 04/22/2009, -3/+34If your dick to balls ratio is that high you should probably see your doctor.
- smack1700, on 04/22/2009, -15/+45How about pollution levels? Both currently and growth rates? Air quality? Water quality?
- kd420, on 04/22/2009, -3/+32Yeah, >65% is for Defense. It seems to me that America's foreign policy since WWII has caused more problems than it solved.
- kd420, on 04/22/2009, -4/+30I don't think anyone is arguing that the US is "ahead", the real question is who will be ahead in 10, 20 or 50 years. Judging by the devaluation of the dollar and the extreme foreign/public debt in the country, consistent budget deficits, no reserve holdings, fighting multiple wars and a trade deficit, I say China is going to be "ahead" in the next 50 years.
- rrife, on 04/22/2009, -1/+26problem solved
- badenglishihave, on 04/22/2009, -3/+25All you need to do to see the state of the Chinese economy is to look at the GDP per capita. The USA is so far ahead it isn't even funny.
- calidin, on 04/22/2009, -1/+23It's a nice chart to look at, but the numbers should be on the bars. I have no doubt that I'm being overly critical, but I dislike comparing such radically different numbers (as percentages) with unnumbered, side by side bar graphs.
For example: the difference in the infant mortality rate is a difference of 6.26/1000 births in the US compared to 20.125/ 1000 births in china. The population is a difference of 370 million to 1,338 million. However, the two graphs look very similar even though the numbers are scaled very differently.

https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world ... - Ephilation, on 04/22/2009, -0/+21First of all, America is a very young nation compared to China. Second of all, you need to get out more.
- CptCold, on 04/22/2009, -1/+22paulmer, are you aware that your government has files on every person? Are you aware that they monitor your intertubes?
Granted, they probably have no reason to moniter your internet/cell phone usage and so don't, but same logic applies to China. Are you aware that the Chinese gov't takes pretty much no effort to disable proxy websites, and there are no consequences of using a proxy site to access the websites being blocked? The web restrictions are a joke.
The fact that you think it is so God-damn awful over there after never having experienced it yourself (yes, I'm assuming, but the evidence is compelling) shows the scary similarity of what you believe is reality and what your government wants you to believe. I'll be the first to admit that I enjoy living in America more than China, but it's mainly because I'm more comfortable and familiar with American culture, and has little to do with perceived notions of freedom.
Think about it, isn't the institution of being politically correct just the US's form of censorship? If you say/do things deemed politically incorrect, you're liable to get fired from your job. That may be a stretch, but it is true that I would be taking a risk if I refused to stop talking about Huck Finn and ***** Jim at work, regardless of context. How can it be that appropriate context would not save your job if your boss received more than a few calls about the use of the word "*****"? Like I said, I love living in America, shoot, I love America itself (mostly), but it isn't necessarily the utopia you imagine. There are two sides to every coin. - Elranzer, on 04/22/2009, -3/+24I'm French-Canadian too and no one mistakes me for a Muslim.
Then again, French Canadians tend to be white people, not dark-brown and semetic. Are you sure you weren't adopted? - havocjaw, on 04/22/2009, -5/+26They have Andy Lau... we lose.
- DemDude, on 04/22/2009, -2/+23Would have been pretty cool with actual numbers and sources. Like this, it's just a bunch of rather meaningless if nicely coloured bars.
- Dugglous, on 04/22/2009, -3/+23Let's face it. Americans are much better off than Chinese in so many ways. Take the recent Talk of Texas secession for an example...Federal government can't do anything, even most fellow Americans just call them stupid or simply tell them to gtfo. Hell, we even polled the people for their opinion without fearing the result might be the majoring being for it.
Wanna know what happens if you do that in China? You are jailed and then you disappear a few days later. No polling the people for their opinion (ok maybe one with CCP-approved result).
Then again, let's not compare THAT to China. It's an insult to the U.S.. - billyelliotmann, on 04/22/2009, -2/+22So we got more nukes and more fighter jets, but they got more people... and? A lot of this doesn't even look like apples to apples.
- Harabeck, on 04/22/2009, -7/+27Things are getting a little shaky here, but all things being relative, we are so much better off than China.
- YoWhatDaFuxUp, on 04/22/2009, -7/+26Jackie Chan on Chinese Freedom
"I'm not sure if it's good to have freedom or not," Chan said Saturday. "I'm gradually beginning to feel that we Chinese need to be controlled. If we're not being controlled, we'll just do what we want."

- jer21, on 04/22/2009, -1/+19What are "chineses"?
- TigerStar337, on 04/22/2009, -12/+29Most Americans would be challenged to answer this sample question from a Chinese university entrance exam:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/education/65893 ...
China is the way it is today because the actions of the imperialist. Not long ago China was a Republic. Because of the Opium War with England and the invasion by the Japanese, the republic was weak. It was easy for Mao Zedong and the communist to overthrow the government. With the economic changes made in the 1980s by Deng Xiaoping, China is now an authoritarian capitalist government. This type of government has many advantages over a liberal democracy like the USA. China is now the most successful capitalist country in the world and is the model for a new global trend of governments. The USA is #1 in making war and spending more money than it has. - eramos, on 04/22/2009, -2/+18One might say it's even... comically large.
- michaelrsa, on 04/22/2009, -1/+17Well, in one aspect of control I do agree with China: population.
We have 6 billion people on this planet, and by 2050 its expected to be 9 billion.
How much longer can this last before we engage in resource wars the likes no one has ever seen? - Recluse84, on 04/22/2009, -0/+16John Stewart and Stephen Colbert could not exist as they are, in China.
- wpyh, on 04/22/2009, -13/+29I'm not a mainland Chinese, but I live in China. Personally, I don't care that much about freedom -- wait, we _have_ freedom here. We are free to determine our own future (self-determination) and we are free to do whatever the hell we want (liberty), as long as it doesn't constitute:
1. Acting against the law: committing crimes
2. Acting against the government: mocking the government, demonstrating, etc
I just wanna live. - vvvladut, on 04/22/2009, -0/+16Is this a poem?
- CedEx, on 04/22/2009, -0/+15But do you have bombs made of gold?
- Warom, on 04/22/2009, -5/+20HAHAHA.... (hours later) HAHAHAHAHAHA, self determination to make it to the fridge?
- Alejandro79, on 04/22/2009, -5/+20GDP per capita is great because it lets Americans believe that the money tied up in corporations and the financial elite's bank accounts embiggens them somehow.
