- The2DQuartet, on 09/03/2009, -0/+32Could that ridiculous oversized graphic have made it any harder to understand what they're trying to say? It's like looking at a subway map while lying on the floor
- Turkman182, on 09/02/2009, -0/+16Oh good, first the bankers steal our money, then the hackers steal the money we gave to the bankers to pay us back with. My head hurts.
- mwtapp, on 10/11/2009, -2/+14A good example of risk vs. reward.
- Seth024, on 09/03/2009, -0/+9$1 trillion each year, and the biggest heists/thefts in the last years are only a few million dollars. (a few dozen million at most)
What happened to the other $999 billion? - jgray1975, on 09/03/2009, -0/+7This is why we can't have nice things.
- inactive, on 09/03/2009, -0/+7a good example of unnecessary graphics.
- wolfing, on 09/03/2009, -0/+6Infographics overuse
- duewydo, on 09/03/2009, -1/+6and your parents that thought that e-mail looked legit when they entered in all their personal information...
- uHaveASmallDigg, on 09/03/2009, -0/+4It's cuz they forgot to logout when they hacked into the mainframe.
- InThePants, on 09/03/2009, -0/+3BUT LOOK THE TEXT IS IN 3D!!!!!! AND CUTE ICONS!!!!!!
- ThatGeek, on 09/03/2009, -0/+3this is a unix system!
- BaddBrainz, on 09/02/2009, -1/+4It would be interesting how many years per million these guys will get comparing to Bernie Madoff.
- mathew_bug, on 09/03/2009, -0/+3That's a really bad infographic. No hierarchy or information sorting method.
- chadsmith729, on 09/03/2009, -0/+3Love the circa 1993 keyboard in the thumbnail. DUGG!
- joculator, on 09/03/2009, -0/+3They left out the part where the people caught go to jail for a looooooong time.
- Paulish, on 09/03/2009, -0/+2Those keyboards were awesome. I loved the loud noise they made.
- Mujokan, on 09/03/2009, -0/+2I'm waiting for the one described in "Count Zero", when someone trawls through all the low-security African banks.
- Paulish, on 09/03/2009, -0/+2My guess is that the $999 billion is spent trying to prevent the few million. The article says that theft COSTS that much, not that that much money is stolen.
- guinpen, on 09/03/2009, -0/+2it's a bank. it's not some tech company that'll go "thanks a ton guy," a bank would have their lawyers out in seconds
- perfecxion, on 09/03/2009, -1/+3i HIGHLY doubt banks use Windows servers
- oddrewps, on 09/03/2009, -0/+1Why? They're just going to go to some low-security, white collar resort where they can still have conjugal visits.
/s - perfecxion, on 09/03/2009, -0/+1when did i ever say for free? i just said fix it. you can get paid for it i don't care, many already do. ***** you can come up with a program just to stop the exploit you found and milk the ***** out of it because ppl won't want to be exploited. So it's more about don't find exploits and use it ONLY to destroy and have no meaningful role in the computer industry. When you tell everyone about the exploit then it loses it's power, its very simple.
- iPwnN00bs, on 09/03/2009, -0/+1This is were we think differently... :P
- wes89horns, on 09/03/2009, -0/+1If we have a map of where they're hiding then surely we should be able to catch them!
- kd1s, on 09/04/2009, -0/+1If people ever knew about the low tech hacks against banks they'd be scared *****. It's all part of the Demand Draft system.
- hasslinthehoff, on 09/03/2009, -0/+1Time to go back to using gold bullion for every transaction.
- dazparkour, on 09/03/2009, -0/+1It's not their job to fix things for free and from experience most of these problems occur when management does not agree with the tech staff about the possibility of attack versus the cost and time to fix it and ultimately pulls rank because "that sounds so far fetched".
- milkmit, on 09/03/2009, -0/+1That wanna-be infographic is just awful.
- dazparkour, on 09/03/2009, -0/+1@perfecxion - like leaving passwords set to the default. People have entirely stopped doing that now?
- Paulish, on 09/03/2009, -0/+1I work in IT at a university hospital. I talked to the guys that manage the servers and you would be surprised how often the security is compromised. They said that a lot of their various servers were compromised by hackers. When I asked them why they didn't do anything about it, they said it was because if they tried to shut hackers out of a system the hacker might potentially bring the whole system down with malicious scripts/code set to run if removal is attempted. They said there is basically a tacit agreement that the hackers can "claim" their servers for hacker street cred or whatever there is for reputation among hackers, and in turn the hackers don't do anything malicious to/with the systems.
- 4u21der, on 09/03/2009, -0/+1Yet, the biggest criminals are the ones in charge of these systems.
- nismerf, on 09/03/2009, -0/+1Its like this, you tell a bank or a company do this to protect yourself, put in this firewall, use this intrusion detection system, or put in this auditing software to make sure you are not getting hacked, cheated, stolen from... they say "How much?" .... Naaa we won't do that, its too much. The hacker says "Joy!" ad takes 2x the cost of what it was.
- Xaramoth, on 09/03/2009, -0/+1Hackers don't use macs.
- insertAliasHere, on 09/03/2009, -0/+1Lots and lots and lots of little theft.
- insertAliasHere, on 09/03/2009, -0/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model_M_keyboard
Not many keyboards use the buckling spring design anymore, and it's too bad. The Model M was a joy to type on. (If typing can be described as joyful that is.) - 4u21der, on 09/03/2009, -1/+1...and morons like you.
- inactive, on 09/03/2009, -1/+1I find keyboards with the big enter key, and moved backslash, slow me down when hacking a gibson.
- Terraburn, on 09/03/2009, -0/+01507 systems in one day. Biggest crash in history.
- perfecxion, on 09/03/2009, -2/+12 word for "hackers" like this, douche bags. fix the ***** thing don't actually use the exploit. or if you use it at least give it back or something.
- nightmyst999, on 09/03/2009, -2/+1Sounds kind of like Robin Hood.
- AROERS, on 09/03/2009, -2/+1Modern day Robin Hood. Banks don't really have money, thus can't loose it when you think about it....
- inactive, on 09/03/2009, -8/+4all thanks to ***** Windows
