- samard2002, on 10/11/2008, -5/+196I love that the Canadians in the first comments are arguing over who should take credit for their excellent situation while Americans are busy trying to pin the blame on someone for the cause of theirs. I envy you in this, Canadians.
- duggdowncatisad, on 10/11/2008, -19/+202O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

The True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. - ethicalethical, on 10/10/2008, -38/+195I am not a Liberal Party supporter per se , and will be voting to defeat Harper strategically regardless (see http://anyonebutharper.ca , http://voteforenvironment.ca ), but surely if our banking system is strong it could not be because of a party only in power two years:
...these regulations were put in power by previous governments: I am just saying, maybe Harper is good for economic stability and maybe he is not, but it is TOTALLY DISHONEST FOR HIM TO IMPLY THAT THE TORIES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR BANK STABILITY WHEN BANK STABILITY HAD BEEN ENSURED FOR YEARS IN THIS COUNTRY BEFORE 2006 ANYWAY. - inactive, on 10/11/2008, -17/+151Just a few more weeks and we'll be able to buy 1/2 the United States.
Hear that bitches, WE WILL OWN YOU financially. - activeimage, on 10/11/2008, -2/+131Canada won't own them, China already owns them. Nothing like borrowing money from your ideological enemy for decades now. ***** morons.
- scabbers, on 10/11/2008, -3/+111The Americans had to sell their computers to buy rice.
- vacuum2440, on 10/11/2008, -6/+101I can't even begin to express how proud I am to be a Canadian...and no I don't need to to hang a flag on the front of my house to show my patriotism
- ancientdinko, on 10/11/2008, -3/+82Canada ***** yeah!
- xaviel, on 10/11/2008, -12/+88Ô Canada!
Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,
Il sait porter la croix!
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits. - wkrausmann, on 10/11/2008, -6/+74Responsible and regulated banking is not a product of socialism. It's just being smart.
- lexpattison, on 10/11/2008, -5/+72The experiment is over - just like communism. A well regulated social democratic market system is by far the best. Reasonable, modest yearly growth that benefits families and the large majority of the populace. You may end up with less Paris Hiltons and Kanye Wests - but is that really a bad thing?
- shakin, on 10/11/2008, -4/+70You have a very weak grasp of what socialism is, don't you?
From what I've seen, Americans' ideas about what socialism is are:
- police, fire services, roads, sidewalks, public parks, etc paid for with taxpayers dollars = not socialism
- healthcare paid for with taxpayer dollars = socialism
OR
- industry regulations in the US, regardless of how strict they are = not socialism
- industry regulations in Canada or France no matter how similar they are to US regulations as long as there is at least one difference = socialism - Nitrouz, on 10/11/2008, -5/+65Are there more Canadians than Americans on Digg?
- bigbangbuddha, on 10/11/2008, -0/+58I'm an American that immigrated to Canada about 6 years ago for work. I can say that I was actually quite amazed how strict the banks here were when I went to get a home loan. They were very serious about me having 25% down and there was no such thing as a 30 year fixed mortgage. At the time I grumbled and complained to no end on how screwed up the Canadian banks were, but wow was I wrong. Those regulations are very necessary to keep the economy from eating itself alive, and I'm very glad the government had the foresight to make them.
I know as Americans we joke about Canada a lot, but most of us don't know anything about it. The government here is a very stable one, and parliamentary systems like this are quite good to keep things from getting too far right or left. I seriously recommend anyone to stay here for a while and learn a few things. For a small population this country has some really big secrets to share. - JustJoe4Life, on 10/11/2008, -12/+65Canadians are so perfect it makes me want to vomit.
- geogeer, on 10/11/2008, -1/+50Don't worry, it makes us want to vomit too.
- dysonlu, on 10/11/2008, -0/+49And the World agree Canada's bank system is #1.
Canada rated world's soundest bank system:
http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSTRE4981 ... - ripple123, on 10/11/2008, -2/+46maybe its because digg is something you mostly read.
- minoss, on 10/11/2008, -1/+44"So-called subprime mortgages to risky borrowers, which were at the heart of the U.S. financial collapse, were only a tiny part of the Canadian mortgage industry and are non-existent today."
This is the biggest reason for their success. The subprime loans which were dependent on home prices to increase forever is what caused this disaster. Thank you Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. - evil-doer, on 10/11/2008, -3/+41i was shocked today to see the dollar had dropped to 85 cents us. wtf? how the hell is the us dollar doing so well and/or the canadian dollar so bad?
- digidevil, on 10/11/2008, -1/+38Allow me to speak for my countrymen/-women: "We're sorry! Let us clean that up for you, no no, that's fine, we don't mind!"
- RandoymRandt, on 10/11/2008, -2/+38I hate to tell you folks, but the Australian banking system is similarly in great shape.
- PsyklonAeon, on 10/11/2008, -1/+37It'll be difficult to buy the states while our dollar keeps sliding downhill as it has been lately.
- Zorkon, on 10/11/2008, -1/+37C'mon! Move to Canada! http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=TMiqfusRWM4
- biogears, on 10/11/2008, -8/+43You talking about bank deregulation like what was voted for in 1999 by congress with a veto-proof majority including democrats and signed by Clinton?
I bet Canada doesn't have groups that demand that banks make loans to people who don't meet the standard requirements of income and payment history. - aussieNickuss, on 10/11/2008, -4/+38Trust the Canadians to have a financial website called Canoe.
- pizpot, on 10/11/2008, -2/+33We can't risk what Harper might do with a majority!
- skadebo, on 10/11/2008, -13/+43I just want Chretien back.
- qwertyxuiop, on 10/11/2008, -6/+36Don't get me wrong
I like being canadian.. but lets not be silly with the patriotism here - DeFex, on 10/11/2008, -2/+32actually Harper and his cronies were all for a merger..was it RBC and CIBC i cant remember. and more deregulation. we are still at mercy of a central "agency" who dictates a prime rate though im not sure if its like the US "fed" corporate-gov owned or something different
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -0/+29Every time our country is mentioned to a US audience, we get closer to being bombed. SO shhhhhh. most Americans don't know we exist... let's keep it that way.
- PsyklonAeon, on 10/11/2008, -1/+29We'll see how stable Harper's policies are if he gets a majority and can push through pretty much any bills he likes...
- wowHaster, on 10/11/2008, -0/+27For everyone who points to the crashing dollar as a sign of trouble, it's not. if anything the ever weakening American dollar was a problem for Canada because that was one of the competitive edges that Canadian manufacturers used. while the US dollar was crashing Canada had to take steps to make sure that the dollar didn't get too high so as to not crash our own economy. the Oil industry may be able to handle a strong Canadian dollar but the other industries that rely on export don't have that luxury. any sudden change in the value of the dollar, up or down, is bad for someone.
as for regulations, everyone talks about it as if it's all bad or it's all good. you have to realize that it depends what the regulation actually says. if it says lend money to deadbeats then yeah, you'll get in trouble. but the laws governing Canadian banks are VERY VERY conservative, made to make sure that the banks will not fail even in the case of huge disasters (such as financial giants failing). if the government wants more loans to be given out they'll just lower the interest rates rather then pass legislation that could so easily have unintended consequences.
Yes, there is one aspect of Canada that is more conservative then the US, our banks! - BradHAWK, on 10/11/2008, -1/+27Dugg for calling us ***** morons, because it's true.
- badqat, on 10/11/2008, -1/+26I'd digg you twice if I could...right on the money.
- SLockhart, on 10/11/2008, -1/+26Damn right. In Canada we're issued canoes by the government and we're tested yearly on our proficiency. No one knows why though. It's a major point of contention in our current elections.
- Dyzon, on 10/11/2008, -1/+26Canoe is a Canadian based News and Entertainment website. Its named Canoe mostly because it makes it seem extremely Canadian, its not really a financial website, it just has a financial section.
Its just like if you wanted people to know a website was obviously American you would call it ApplePie.com or ExtortingAbsorbanentAmountsOfMoneyOutOfThePoorAndMiddleClassUntilTheyCan'tGiveAnymoreAndThen
BlamingItOnSomeoneElseAndExpectingThoseSamePoorAndMiddleClassedToBailYouOut.com - kingmanic, on 10/11/2008, -1/+26We got ATI. We got Bioware. Ubisoft. Blackberry. Considering the US is 10 times the size that isn't bad. A lot of technical innovations happen here under government funding as well.
- dhughes, on 10/11/2008, -1/+26 This story is really getting around, although it's true but as I have said in comments on another site it may be true that up here (Canada) our banking is different, lots of capital, the US situation is still going to affect us since the US is our biggest trading partner.
Our government has even, just today (Fri Oct 10), given banks $25 billion to help loosen up some of the money since Canadian banks have stopped lending each other money due to the economic crisis.
We're in good shape but I wouldn't be smug, you never know what could happen next week. - camilos007, on 10/11/2008, -7/+32The reason is this, in Canada, its always -90 degrees. Plus the polar bears are always chasing people around. So people stay in doors and visit digg.
Oh yes, and also, Canadians chase away the bears with their hockey sticks and they take showers with whale fat.
This is what my friend told me. He once knew a Canadian. - kezia1, on 10/11/2008, -6/+29I'm not your buddy, guy.
- xFlipstarx, on 10/11/2008, -0/+22Blame it on oil. That drops.. The loonie drops!
- xFlipstarx, on 10/11/2008, -2/+242 weeks? Try Tuesday.
- Rikushix, on 10/11/2008, -1/+22I'm very proud to be Canadian. Especially because I wouldn't vote for Harper if you paid me, but its our conservative banking policies and lack of government fiscal handouts that have kept us afloat.
Read the Globe and Mail this morning, we have officially been rated to have the most secure and dependable banking system in the entire world. The US is 42nd. - badqat, on 10/11/2008, -6/+27You obviously haven't been noting how the US dollar has been increasing in value against the loonie, have you?
- Asmordean, on 10/11/2008, -2/+23Corrected version:
...With glowing hearts™ we see thee rise,... - fabkebab, on 10/11/2008, -14/+32This is the sort of comment that typically precedes a great fall
- Kinneas12, on 10/11/2008, -3/+21The only thing that is really going to hurt us, is the Americans being too poor to do serious business. We're going to have to shut down a proportionate amount of manufacturing.
- aussiejan, on 10/11/2008, -0/+18I'm a Canadian living in Australia and it warms my heart to see some Canadian patriotism - in English and in French.
- dualboy24, on 10/11/2008, -6/+24Sad that anyone voted you up. Canada is far far far from socialist.
