- z0rk, on 07/01/2009, -4/+36The whole parks issue is just a smoke screen. the savings from closing the parks is less than 1% of the shortfall. they are only using it to rile people up, and get them ready for another huge tax increase.
- govsucks, on 07/01/2009, -8/+24Considering the people that run California have the same basic collectivist ideology of the current administration, this will make approximately 0.000001 difference.
- twiztidsinz, on 07/02/2009, -1/+17Wasn't your state pretty deep in the hole before the Govenator came along?
- superkendall, on 07/02/2009, -1/+17That's exactly right. They are going to cut funds for parks over cutting back silly expenses in the cities? Hopefully Californians are smart enough to see through this.
- AWBoy666, on 07/02/2009, -0/+11So? Now all we need is another 99 ideas and we're there.
When you're talking about billions, everything is 1% and everyone has an interest. Just because it's a "small percentage" doesn't mean you can ignore it. In fact, that's precisely why you have to pay attention to it. - inactive, on 07/02/2009, -0/+10Pepsi Presents: Point Sur
- alamedaman, on 07/02/2009, -0/+9I'm so glad I'm not a student in California anymore. or even a UC worker (janitor, cook, etc.)- they want to cut 8% from those making UNDER 40k, and 16% from those making OVER =( california FTL
- Barackalypse, on 07/02/2009, -6/+15I wonder if the Huffington Post would care if the Feds were trying to do this to Alabama instead of California, usually they seem to enjoy the Federalization of things (except in cases of marijuana, then they're pro-states rights).
- wmtrader, on 07/02/2009, -0/+7What the Huffington Post does not tell you is that in the Bay Area there are a number of government funds operated by the local governments that exist to buy land and preserve open space.
The State has talked about closing the Henry Coe State Park: http://www.coepark.org :and Santa Clara County is looking into taking it over: http://www.mercurynews.com/california-budget/ci_12 ... :using the funds set aside to preserve open space. - Ajajadude, on 07/02/2009, -1/+7So, when they cut the other big, popular parts of the budget because they eat up too much money, is that for the same reason? They have to cut A LOT and they should be cutting wherever they can. The threat of cutting parks money wasn't to force a tax hike. Schwarzenegger has said he will veto anything with tax hikes. It's the morons in the state legislature that think taxes on top of cuts are the way to go.
- Photokon, on 07/02/2009, -1/+6I'm getting tired of people saying raise taxes. There is nothing left to raise. Almost 10% sales tax in LA now. Unreal. People will start leaving more and more, or declare their "residence" in Nevada to avoid taxes. There is no more blood left in the rock to tax. Do a 10% cut across the board and get it over with.
- ted510, on 07/02/2009, -2/+7Where am I going to smoke now?!
- Photokon, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4There are no taxes left to raise. THERE IS NOTHING LEFT. We have the highest taxes in the nation. We almost have 10% sales tax in LA, WHAT MORE DO YOU ***** WANT. Jesus christ. There is no blood left in the rock.
- Ajajadude, on 07/02/2009, -1/+5It's the state legislature that's ***** up California. That and the fact people in this state vote on more ***** (that requires more money) in a year than any other state is also a problem.
- GrodyChamp, on 07/02/2009, -7/+11Get ready for Pelosi to help the rest of the country to turn to ***** like out here in CA...
- Richandler, on 07/02/2009, -3/+7California is withholding social security and unemployment because of shortfalls in the budget.
- depro9, on 07/02/2009, -3/+7They are going to try & sell "the peoples land" so they can build more condos thus more tax dollars! I smell a ***** scam!
- PhotoJustin, on 07/02/2009, -3/+7Before everyone starts pointing at California and saying "see what happens when you elect Democrats," remember that we pay $42,000,000,000 in taxes more than we get back in federal spending, so all of you in the South, midwest, southwest and Alaska, remember that we're subsidizing your home state. That's more than twice our budget shortfall. Just sayin'.
In the meantime; who cares, state or federal ownership of our parks. As long as they're still parks, it's not like Ca is profiting from owning them. - 3The3Dude3, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4This is definitely true. Same with Jersey (where I am originally from). The problem isn't that democrats are ***** people. The problem lies with that state governments, full of democratic POLITICIANS like to take more than we the republican/democrat/libertarian/apolitical/white/black/ginger/Jewish/Christian/atheist/Muslim/Buddhist etc... CITIZENS can afford to pay.
There is a breaking point, that once hit, those economies begin to shrink. This happens when the burden placed on the wealthy, that provide all of the jobs that make an economy robust (and pay the bulk of the taxes) becomes to inequitable for them to continue doing so. (See: California, New York, New Jersey etc...) This is why places like Texas are having economic growth, while the rest of us are living gloom and doom. - AriaNoelle, on 07/02/2009, -2/+5Please do it. Closing these parks would be BAD. Letting them grow wild would only mean more forest fires, ultimately costing more in taxpayer dollars to fight the fires than would be saved.
I hate my state's government. Just cut redundant government positions and tell the BART workers who want pay increases when they average $120k a year they can ***** off and give their jobs to other people. - Photokon, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3you're a moron. You think businesses have to stay here? You think people HAVE to stay here? Ask strasburg, the SDSU baseball player where he plans to declare his residence. I sure as hell bet you it is NOT California.
Funny, none of your ***** involves cutting anything. Let's just raise taxes again to cover largess programs. - Photokon, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3I would just like for you to see how wrong and dumb you are.
http://www.cpec.ca.gov/SecondPages/Index.asp?Query ... - Photokon, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3Oh, and you are an idoit jeff. Go here and cry yourself to sleep:
http://www.cpec.ca.gov/SecondPages/Index.asp?Query ... - z0rk, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3Oh i dont know, how about tripling? how about the 1% increase in sales tax? How about the .25% income tax increase, make most californians pay 9.80% income tax per year? all of this adds up to make us the highest taxed state, and you want to tax us more?
- carlosos, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3Wasn't with California the problem that they want to buy more but don't want to pay for it and now cry when they have to save money at other parts of the budget? At some point you can't add more debt.
- Photokon, on 07/02/2009, -3/+6Or, they could raise fees for parks, take on more volunteers, etc. But, I don't see them doing that. It's LESS than 1%. What they should be cutting:
Welfare
Education [California spends more per capita than any other state]
State employee pensions, pay, medical benefits, retirement medical benefits, etc.
Medical - including emergency mediCAL that ANYONE can get. So the damn illegals come over, get emergency medical and rack up tens of thousands in hospital bills for anchor babies.
And a ton of other *****.
Why not just do a 10% cut across the board instead, but that would make too much sense. - SirBruce, on 07/02/2009, -1/+4That's because people didn't want to pay the higher registration and wanted the legislature to cut spending instead. Well the legislature refused to cut spending year after year so now we're in a mess. But the voters still want the cuts over the car registration.
- SirBruce, on 07/02/2009, -2/+5Part of the reason we got rid of Gray Davis was a budget pinch he got us into. But the main issue is the legislature, which requires a supermajority to pass budgets. Since both Democrats and Republicans refuse to budge much, once the dot.com bubble burst in 2000 the state has been spiraling down in deficits; the Democrats won't cut enough spending to match today's lower revenues and the Republicans won't raise taxes to match the old level of spending.
Each year they did some last-minute hocus pocus to hide the problem and kicked the hard decisions down the road to the next legislature to deal with. Now we're at the end of our rope and we're pretty much *****. The Governor isn't at fault at all; he's made many concessions and worked very hard to get deals done. But to make major structural changes required ballot measures, and when the ballot measures came up, people wouldn't vote for them because they were too stupid to realize that a 10% cut now is better than taking a 20% cut later. So now it's later and we're all in deep trouble. The state is now paying people in IOUs, and only one bank is cashing the IOUs and only until July. After that, the state government will collapse and the federal government will have to come in and bail us out. - midbc, on 07/02/2009, -2/+5where will you go then?
- ZombieFrog, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3Really? Where are they going to put them?
- Moonkeeper, on 07/02/2009, -1/+3"Before everyone starts pointing at California and saying "see what happens when you elect Democrats," remember that we pay $42,000,000,000 in taxes more than we get back in federal spending"
CA should secede. - AaronPDX, on 07/02/2009, -1/+3Legalize marijuana. Prison costs drop, tax on pot goes up. Tourists come from through out the US, as with Amsterdam, to smoke up and have a good time. TADA!
No, I don't think Amsterdam is in the US. - SirBruce, on 07/02/2009, -1/+3That's because the most "liberal" states also tend to be the richest. Thus when the economy is in a downturn, their governments are going to have larger shortfalls.
- cappiello, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2California most likely is profiting from keeping them open. Just looking at how much it costs to run them vs. how much money the actual parks bring in is shortsighted. It brings visitors. Money is spent in other places in CA. The feds taking over the parks might be better financially for CA, but it also might mean that some would still close.
- 3The3Dude3, on 07/02/2009, -1/+3If you think that any of the things you are trying to link together are in any way related, please stop voting. Now.
- Photokon, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2so you advocate 21% of someone's income to go straight to sales tax and income tax? You're an idiot.
- cappiello, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2Actually the only study that I'm aware of has the state parks bringing in money for California. I think it was from CSU Sacramento. I'm not sure that it's a smokescreen just to raise taxes anyhow since some republicans are proposing that we pay to keep the parks in operation by offshore drilling. Total Fail all around.
- Photokon, on 07/02/2009, -2/+4quit lying. you have no idea what you are talking about.
- Photokon, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2incorrect zork. There are a multitude of different calculations for Prop 98. Read them.
- Photokon, on 07/02/2009, -3/+4Photojustin,
yeah, because raising taxes solves all the problems! DUH! That's why we almost have 10% sales tax in LA, yet they can't balance. OF COURSE!! HOW COULD I BE SO DUMB.
California has the highest taxes in the nation and the solution is to raise taxes?! - Ajajadude, on 07/02/2009, -3/+4Yeah, "debt" and "date" aren't really that close. You can't blame that on a simple typo, smart guy.
Ever notice that the most "liberal" state in the country also has the most productive economy? - cappiello, on 07/02/2009, -1/+2This has nothing to do with progressivism and everything to do with politics. It mostly stems from the need of a supermajority to pass budgets. Idiotic, IMO.
- Acrobeles, on 07/02/2009, -1/+2Wow, California really is going down the tubes fast. I wouldn't count on having a strong economy for very long without making serious changes to the way things get funded in that state. A huge problem is that California is a little unique in how things can manage to get on the ballot, and a massive portion of the state budget comes from things that people voted directly to fund. The state legislature can't touch any of that. So people have a tendency in the state to keep voting for more spending, but never want to vote for taxes to pay for it. The sad thing is that the only thing the legislature has to work with in terms of making cuts are things like education, which you should always be the LAST thing you cut. Now teachers, already underpaid, aren't going to get their paychecks. The university system, once probably the best in the nation and absolutely essential for keeping the California economy strong, is declining rapidly due to repeated budget cuts... which makes students pay more tuition for a lower quality education, and lowers the quality of research in many aspects of the California economy (particularly for the State's agriculture.)
- j0en, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1But the administration doesn't have to answer to a ballot initiative process.
- BotchaMcCoola, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1They are a million times as expensive that way and we get no benefit whatever.
- skotski, on 07/02/2009, -3/+4Yes, the state is in the *****, but I thoroughly admire the governor - both for what he has given up to serve, and how hard he has worked at trying to pull this state together. And no, things were not all sweet pretty roses until he came along.
- monvalley, on 07/02/2009, -1/+2What jerks government officials are. Another tactic to scare the publc into agreeing to tax hikes. Why don't they cut the budget of the thousands of non-essential agencies throughout the state; just look in the telephone books and see all the listings of various government agencies, you will be shocked. These idiots always say if taxes aren't increased they must cut police, firemen, parks and other things the people want. This is done to scare people into agreeing with more taxes. Vote these idiots out of office.
- deema1, on 07/02/2009, -3/+4Another shining example of the failure of progressivism. Every progressive state is bankrupt. Explain how this movement has any credibility whatsoever.
Their true goal is control. By bankrupting states through unsustainable social programs the government is able to assume control. There's no such thing as state's rights when they're indebted to the government. - Foot56, on 07/02/2009, -5/+5Anyone notice how b3owulf misspelled a 2nd grade level word.
- jeffbw, on 07/02/2009, -1/+1Well you shouldn't be paying for everything with a sales tax, genius.
