- Hillsfar, on 06/11/2009, -11/+70Possible solutions:
1. Cut state worker salaries on a progressive basis. Example:
$30,000 becomes $28,000
$60,000 becomes $55,000
$90,000 becomes $76,000
$120,000 becomes $94,000
Don't like it? There's thousands who would compete for that job! They should be lucky they are not part of the 12% of Californians out o work! We all need to tighten our belts!
2. Do the same with pension benefits. They should NOT have been jacked up from 2% per year of service (so work 30 years, get 60% of your highest pay for life) to 3% (so work 20 years, get 60% of your highest pay for life) back around 2003. The actuarial tables and economic growth assumptions were WRONG!
3. 20 cent tax on soda. Has 40 grams of sugar per 12 ounce can, which is bad for you anyway. 33 million people times 25 cans per month (that;s HALF the statistical average) gives close to $2 billion a year.
4. No more free schooling and free lunches and welfare services for illegal immigrants. - inactive, on 06/11/2009, -2/+46I just hope the federal government doesn't try to bail them out.
- vapn420, on 06/11/2009, -1/+28yeah, thats a brilliant idea. Let's just bury our heads in the sand until this all blows over or someone else fixes it for us.
- monkeyrun, on 06/11/2009, -1/+28We are now paying almost 10% sales tax.
I swear I will never buy anything locally if it's available on amazon.com. - theinsane, on 06/11/2009, -2/+28The real solution? Move away from California.
- inactive, on 06/11/2009, -8/+33Solution:
Follow libertarian principles of small government and low taxes. Let people keep what they earn and privatize the public sector jobs. Let people pay for what they want, not force people to pay for things they don't need. Keep the illegals in the state, but don't give them any freebies. let the strong survive and stay in this country. the welfare people can leave - inactive, on 06/11/2009, -13/+37Kick out the illegals.
- nedzeve, on 06/11/2009, -4/+28Ducking this issue calls for real leadership:
"Your taxes are high because of illegal immigrants!" - pstroll, on 06/11/2009, -3/+26Isn't California the state where firemen and prison guards are retiring at 50 with six figure pensions?
- acknotSW, on 06/11/2009, -2/+23You go in and apply, they are not allowed to ask you about citizenship.
- GaltShrugged, on 06/11/2009, -6/+27But but but... I thought the government could spend forever and we'd all be richer.
- djphilos, on 06/11/2009, -1/+22Why didnt they send the T1000 back to run for governor instead of the T800 still baffles me?
- Annihilia, on 06/11/2009, -2/+22Because it punishes the states that actually believe in budgets and smaller government..
You bail out one state, it gives the rest an incentive to spend recklessly, knowing that they'll get bailed out by other states.
CA needs this. They need to shrink the size of their massive government machine. The people are being crushed under the weight of this bureaucracy. - Premier, on 06/11/2009, -0/+19"we are less than 50 days away from a meltdown of state government"
So what exactly does this mean? Does it mean all state offices will close? What's the panic situation? - Annihilia, on 06/11/2009, -2/+20No, they are not a profit.
It's not that they take our jobs so much as the benefits granted to them by the state creates an incentive for them to come here illegally. Americans, especially in CA, are hurting. Forcing broke Californians at gunpoint to pay for them is down right immoral. A voluntary private fund would be fine if people still want to help them.
Also there are many gang members that come over and fill our prisons because they exploit our stupid drug laws. Legalize drugs and these idiots will vanish. Stop the welfare programs and the number of non violent illegals will drop. - sacramentalist, on 06/11/2009, -0/+17Remember when Arnie called governors looking for handouts "Economic Girliemen"?
- vapn420, on 06/11/2009, -0/+17Seriously. They must be considering this. Let's not just talk about the money you can make from selling the stuff, how about all the money you can save by not going out and arresting/prosecuting these people?
- MarcieCastillo, on 06/11/2009, -5/+21Legalize marijuana for recreational use. It's safer than alcohol, doesn't make you violent. The most damage is caused by all the unhealthy ***** you eat while high.
- kendawg, on 06/11/2009, -7/+22Here's a simple way to get more revenue:
1. Get rid of state income taxes.
2. Raise state sales tax so the 'average' person pays the same amount of taxes.
3. The state gets more revenue because all the illegals that don't pay income tax now pay a higher sales tax. - RicardoWilliams, on 06/11/2009, -7/+21the Governator is actually a really smart guy, I hope he saves the state like he's saved the world.
- sodade, on 06/11/2009, -0/+13"I know for a fact most state workers actually make less than their private counterparts and still people want to screw them."
Everyone knows that govt employees have a generally lower salary than employees of corporations, etc. Everyone also knows that they get insane benefits - like being able to retire after 25 years and still getting paid 80% of your salary. I'd trade my sinking 401k in a heartbeat for this kind of retirement plan. - norman619, on 06/11/2009, -2/+14I have and it's fine for a single person. You can live on it. If you are marrie dthen your spouse will have to get a job. This is called life. Get over it. Plenty of other people are doing it just fine. You want a better paying job then go find one.
- govsucks, on 06/11/2009, -8/+20Ah yes, the "progressive" experiment. Hows that going for you Amigos? Oh wait, the whole nation is now a progressive experiment, you can tell when you debt triples in 6 months.
Well at least with collectivism , we're all ***** together. JOY! - inactive, on 06/11/2009, -1/+13Budget issues.
- GaltShrugged, on 06/11/2009, -2/+13Actually, in under 100 days.
- BlackJackJester, on 06/11/2009, -3/+14Large mexican gangs combined with english programs (lord knows they didn't bother learning our language before coming), free health care, and subsidized living.
Not a drain on us at all. - curtisag, on 06/11/2009, -3/+14The wages are not the biggest issue even. It's all the ***** who retire with the state at age 50, draw a huge ***** pension, and take a free ride on the state health care system. The useless eaters are eating away at the system. My home state has a budget surplus this year. I suggest they study our budget to see what can be cut from their budget. Since 1998, California's budget has increased nearly 100% in size, yet their population and therefore the revenue they can collect has not.
- CaptainNoPants, on 06/11/2009, -0/+10My lowest salary ever was $22,000. It's not easy, but it's not impossible to get by.
- threon, on 06/11/2009, -5/+15They could raise funds by selling San Francisco to China.
- zlatinb, on 06/11/2009, -6/+16Nobody took my job cause I'm educated, hard-working and don't ask for much money. If somebody took your job, its your own fault.
- SpinningHead, on 06/11/2009, -0/+930k isn't bad elsewhere, but there was actually a plan to convert public housing to teacher housing in San Francisco because they cant pay them enough to live there.
- gte879p, on 06/11/2009, -0/+9Bullets are no longer cheap.
- ProfessorSYM, on 06/11/2009, -1/+10The biggest group behind the problems of illegal immigration in this country are the businesses that are willing to employ them. People like to say "Those illegal immigrants are taking jobs!", while usually ignoring the fact that those illegals wouldn't have a job in the first place if the businesses they work for refused to harbor them.
I think the government needs to start first on cracking down on businesses that employ illegals, then begin the processes of deportation. - Hillsfar, on 06/11/2009, -0/+9I also live in California. That's why I'm against more taxes.
- kelmaster1, on 06/11/2009, -0/+8Wow, It's a good thing you're not in charge. Of course it's not like the gov. makes good decisions... Isn't $30k a year in southern California almost poverty wage anyway?
- scoottie, on 06/11/2009, -1/+9Yet we have $50 billion in oil on our shoreline.
How about cutting free medical and education for illegals that will save you a ***** ton of money.
And stop bending over and taking it up the ass from the crazy environmentalists. - inactive, on 06/11/2009, -0/+7They will make some cuts, people will complain, things will be fine.
Next. - opitica, on 06/11/2009, -2/+9the government needs an incentive to release it to the masses. they don't act on logic or kindness of their hearts unfortunately.
- staindniu, on 06/11/2009, -1/+8I agree completely that you should have left the soda tax out. Nobody has the right to tell someone what he should or should not do to himself. If it harms nobody but himself, then it's his choice and nobody should be able to tell him otherwise. Likewise, nobody has the right to arbitrarily charge him more for it. If the price climbs because of natural supply and demand, that's one thing. Taxes on things that don't harm anybody else are ridiculous though.
- inactive, on 06/11/2009, -0/+7"...or someone else fixes it for us. "
Pretty much your only option. - kiley481, on 06/11/2009, -2/+9China already owns San Francisco, along with the rest of America.
- lopla, on 06/11/2009, -9/+16California is simply the first state to fold, the rest will follow. The US is in collapse. Have some fun now while you still can. One option would be instead of spending 50k a year per inmate get that down to 5k a year.
- jofwooster, on 06/11/2009, -0/+7ignore it and it will go away everybody! It worked for the last 10 years!
- zomgflamer, on 06/11/2009, -7/+14I don't thinks so. They took our jobs
- kildurin, on 06/11/2009, -0/+6Wait, it isn't already in the hands of the Chinese?
- Yond, on 06/11/2009, -2/+8Legalize pot, then immediately order the release of all people in jail for anything related to pot. Also institute a tax on pot so people can buy it legally but have to pay taxes on it.
- drmangrum, on 06/11/2009, -0/+6All states have such a law. It's impossible to enforce though.
