- LR2_, on 10/10/2007, -0/+41My guess is that this is the article. http://biz.yahoo.com/kiplinger/070830/iptc_20070723152753_id.html?.v=5
I think they got caught stealing a story and they had to repost it with a notice.
"Editor's note: This was adapted from a story that originally ran in the August 2006 issue of Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine." - andrewcsayer, on 10/10/2007, -7/+42I think I saw Australia going for 20 bucks on ebay.
- Error601, on 10/10/2007, -2/+31They're relatively cheap because no one wants them. Without basic resources like fresh water, you have to spend big bucks to have everything shipped in.
- philovivero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Has the article gone missing on us?
- nmckinlay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14You actually follow a link before digging? Hats off to ya!
- element21, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10why are ppl still digging an article than no longer exists? are they even following the link?
- Ungh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Heaven forbid that someone reads the comments, finds a working mirror, enjoys what they see, and Diggs.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6buried for bleh // besides, pertaining to inconvenient truths - your investment has a high likelyhood of becoming a sandbar
- sirlancelot88, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Before people start yelling about establishing their own little offshore pot farms, keep in mind that even though you buy a whole island, it is still under the jurisdiction of the nation that it's in and subject to that nations laws. Buying a Fijian island is no different from buying a plot of land in California. You own it, but you still can't engage in illegal activities there, because you're still bound under the laws of the United States (or Fiji).
And yes, seceeding to form a libertarian commune is illegal. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5"They're relatively cheap because no one wants them. Without basic resources like fresh water, you have to spend big bucks to have everything shipped in."
Not exactly. You could produce most of the utilities for free. You use an atmosphere water condenser to produce water, you use solar/wind mills to produce your electricity, and you farm your own food. How do you think Ed Brown is able to live in his house forever? Even though the feds have turned off all his utilities. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3ok, only if it has a rather large ominous volcano and all the natives drink orange soda
- stklaw, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Go Pirate Bay go!
- fjacky66, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2 I I'm right now in negotiations to buy my own island, and on that island I'm going to get the best scientists to create a race of genetically engineered dinosaurs, and charge anything i want so THERE SUCK IT...You gotta spend moola to make moola.
- Elranzer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3No man is an island.
- bandwagon95, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Why is Lex Luther selling Australia?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Haha, Yahoo! have got owned for copying an article from a magazine......gutted.
- spookyttws, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You can also own property on the moon. Neither really do you much good without much higher resources. Then again if you bought a star, think of the threats you could make...
- bradcrc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2you could eat free forever, there's no way dominoes could get there in 30 minutes or less!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5With global warming and the seas rising, how long do you have?
- jacquesm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2if may be illegal but if you're strong enough to defend it you're off the hook. SeaLand has an army of one and one lonely anti-aircraft gun and it has so far managed to stay out of the clutches of the british navy. Mostly because the tradeoff (reposses one ugly piece of steel nobody really wants to go and protect and which will cost a fortune to dismantle, not to mention the PR disaster if anybody got hurt) is not worth it, they could squash it in a 10t of a second, but still the 'sealanders' are doing it.
- modifiedbears, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Ungh this is heaven and we forbid you.
- Snaieke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I feel your pain brother. I feel your pain :(
- PainToad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Just cause ur on an island, doesn't mean the Countries laws don't aply
- Tarnum, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1True, but the initial investment is substantial.
You have to buy and transport the equipment to the island, and that's not cheap or easy. Construction costs are 3-4 times higher too. The massive building is required to survive the winter weather. Communications will be problematic and expensive, you can expect $5-10 / min satphone charges. - Tankslap, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Wonder how much Maui is going for.
- TheKricket, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2"Has the article missing on us?" doesnt make much sense...
- Tmax88, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1$1 to $1.50/min for Iridium; Globalstar purportedly offering unlimited plans according to Wikipedia.
- Haohmaru, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The article neglects to mention the enormous taxes island owners sometimes pay.
The owner of a tiny island off of Portland, ME with two houses pays around 35k a year! - mgoblue93, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1After taking 20 seconds to see your comment, it was worth it. Fix the CommentSystem (TM), please.
- Tmax88, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1So what. I'll be long dead.
- SuperCujo, on 10/10/2007, -4/+4With the way the US dollar has been tanking lately, us Aussies will be able to buy you guys out soon...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Some islands may be cheap, but the cheapest ones are almost always inhabitable due to lack of fresh water. You would have to build a reservoir there or something to get fresh water.
- smacksaw, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2It doesn't tell me how I can declare the island my own country, so it's worthless. On my island nation, P2P would be totally legal.
- danband, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0It's a gret ida, but I'm sure getting stuff shipped there would be expensive
- shaelen, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2I've always had a problem with the term "gone missing." I mean. what is that? Gone missing? Why use "gone," anyway? No need.
- chader144, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Some days at work I look here for dreams...
http://www.privateislandsonline.com/
Then my code crashes while compiling.... - PainToad, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2At the rate the seas are ACTUALLY rising...probably 500yrs...unless u believe the hype that is
- johnnyklaj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0star measuring contest!!!!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0I want the Carribians!
- DarkSideofOZ, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Not Only that, Seeing as how Islands are already being over taken by water in some parts of the world due to melting icecaps (something quite often overlooked by the media), the islands are merely "temporary purchases" seeing as how if you buy one, you can use it for 80 years, but your grandchildren still can't have the ships that will blindly run aground on it after its "slightly submerged."
- LondonDude, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2It does if the Island is in international waters and declares as it's own country
IIRC, The Pirate Bay is already trying to buy the small country of Sealand
http://torrentfreak.com/the-pirate-bay-to-buy-sealand/ - Askee, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Not as affordable as I though :(
- Doomsan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Removed
