- EyeSurgery, on 04/07/2008, -1/+12As an engineer, I know there are a lot of engineers every year graduating and having a hard time finding a job. Bush talks about a shortage to justify more H-1Bs but it's *****. Too many companies want to employ engineers for the same amount of money a McDonalds manager gets. They also want highly skilled engineers with very specific skill sets but don't want to train them on these things, which are not taught at universities, unless they can get the bargain provided by foreign labor from certain countries.
- geekchic, on 04/07/2008, -1/+5If foreign universities are sending out engineers with the skills that employers want - and the US universities are not, who is to blame, the employer or the university?
- swordedge, on 04/07/2008, -0/+2It used to be that if you had half the skills an employer was looking for, you were a good candidate for the job. Today, you need 100% of them no matter what. Even if your listed skills are the same but with different software, they won't look at you,
- optimusprime01, on 04/07/2008, -6/+7Man this "putergirl" lady is obsessed with H-1B Visa things. Look at her submissions:

I am all for freedom of speech, and i respect her telling about this upcoming issues. But she seems more negative and biased towards the the whole H-1B thing.
The factor of the matter is even if the cap is raised to 200k or more, it all depends on the American Companies. H1-B are done by sponsoring a foreign worker who has the education and skills that the American employer is unable to find in the US.
The H-1B normally costs from $1,100 to $2,000 depending upon the application type and scenarios. So in the end it's up to the employers in US to sponsor a foreigner or not, raising these caps shouldn't be taken like an alarm, plus H-1B expires after 3 years and is renewed for 3 more years (every year or altogether), extension depends on various factors. So H-1B can stay for max 6 years in US.
What i am trying to say is, "putergirl" please don't be negative about H-1B workers, or visas, US is land of immigrants, and if some employer does sponsor a foreign worker, it's their choice. US job market is an Equal Employee Oppturnity, every one has a fair chance here, so if some foregin student graduating from a US university/college or from a foregin country has better skills and should be hired, then there shouldn't be any negative about it.
[putergirl] nothing against you, but i think you are being too negative about H-1B here. I know you are from a tech industry and might have a company of your own. So if you don't wish to hire international people, thats great dont, but dont try to spread the bias about a point which doesn't have a major impact.- FyreGoddess, on 04/07/2008, -0/+5The problem is that adding H-1B visas make it that much harder for people with really good skills and top-notch educations to find jobs in the IT and engineering fields. The US is making it easier and easier for foreign workers to get jobs here, while at the same time making it that much more difficult for MORE qualified US candidates to get those same jobs. Not everyone has a fair shake when they're paying off $100,000 in student loans and being offered a salary at the low-end of the payscale.
It's a whole lot harder to be a foreign worker in most other countries because the companies have to prove that they have exhausted their resource pool before allowing foreign workers to come in. This whole increase in H-1B visas is a situation that will save corporations money and hurt our domestic employment situation because, frankly, for all the talk about illegal immigrants "taking our jobs", the reality is that H-1B visas are what allow foreign workers to take the jobs we actually WANT to do.- ssn697, on 04/07/2008, -0/+4I just started some consulting work for a company here in town. They brought in an outside firm for the programming. EVERY programmer is here on an H-1B. 9 programmers, and not a single US citizen in the group.
I will leave out the details (NDA and all), but the biggest reason the company could do the job so much more cheaply is the low salaries paid to the H-1B programmers.- dolphus, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1ssn697, thanks for commenting on this. The evidence you provided is great! One of the things I'd like to see out of this is individuals in America getting involved in the democratic and political process again. If you'd like to write up your views on the matter, I'll post them to the blog as well, or you can send me a pointer to a blog where you'd like to post them. You can reach me at hcarter333@gmail.com.

- frogman54, on 04/07/2008, -0/+5Me and my $36 dollars in the bank have no effing clue what this means. Although I do have a Visa card...is that relevant? If I buy stuff, I'm supposed to get rewards. They gave me a discount on a car I could never afford. I was hoping for a bunny. So I called Visa and asked, "Could I trade the I trade my car discount for a free bunny and maybe a bunny cage. Oh...and some starter lettuce...I can't make it to the store until Friday." But the lady said there was no option on her screen for that. I'm just saying, if you sign up for a credit card that brags about its fantastic rewards, then they should have free bunnies. It's just common sense.
- frogman54, on 04/07/2008, -1/+2ACK! Digg ate my edit! Reloading and trying again didn't seem to work out for me. Oh well..."could I trade I the trade" makes a little sense...right?
- dolphus, on 04/07/2008, -0/+4optimusprime01, the issue does have huge impact. Check out the proponents of the bill, the reason they want it is because the H-1B visa cap is hit every year the day after applications are opened. Not only do companies choose to use these visas, but they use all of them that are available every year.
Many tech workers are looking for jobs right now and can't get hired. Yet, the same tech companies that aren't hiring Americans are hiring as many H-1B foreigners as they can get. Meanwhile, in a supposed shortage of tech workers, the salaries have stayed flat for years.
These bills will bring in a small city's worth of foreign tech workers each year. America is an EEO/AA employer, but for Americans. We should all be proud that we have set the standard for the rest of the world in this area, but don't be naive. You won't enjoy these rights as an American in any other country. You'll have to apply for a work visa which you may or may not receive, just like foreigners have to apply here. - slvrbullet87, on 04/07/2008, -2/+2I dont see the problem with this. Businesses are just doing what is better for them. If they can find more skilled employees who will work for cheaper then I dont see why they wouldnt hire them.
To the blogger, If you are that worried about loosing your job to a Visa worker, you could always try doing your job better, or getting more education.- dolphus, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1slvrbullet87, thanks for commenting on this. - dolphus, on 04/07/2008, -0/+1Hi, thanks! It's been fixed in the article, but of course you can't edit a digg headline after the fact.
- dolphus, on 04/07/2008, -0/+1slvrbullet87, you're right, the businesses are doing what's better for them. The real question is when does it become important to the public at large? There are skilled workers in every country with depressed economic conditions that are capable of doing each of our jobs for less money. From a business perspective, it might be better to invite them all in. What do you think? When is enough enough?
- swordedge, on 04/07/2008, -0/+2do not raise the H1B limits, force companies to READ resumes for a change and not just search them.
- victorypup, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1H1Bush limits? LOL, a vote for H1Bush, is a vote against jobs.....
