Bill Gates no longer world's richest man!
business.guardian.co.uk — Overtaken by Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim whose fortune is now at an estimated $67.8bn ( £33.6bn) - equivalent to 8% of Mexico's gross domestic product - compared with $59.2bn for the Microsoft mogul, putting him in the lead by a decisive $8.6bn.

- fusion5, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0There are certain situations in which charity doesn't help other people. It might do on the short term, but usually those who take charity are lazy. You don't know what they're gonna do with the money they receive. By giving to charity you are rewarding people who don't deserve to be rewarded. Instead you should invest in business, and give the money to people work and deserve every penny! That's how you build a better world!
- keeganspeck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Exactly! That's what I've been telling all those Africans dying from famine all these years! They just have to try harder to make it rain. They never put in any effort!

- Dabellah, on 10/11/2007, -2/+77Yea, I read that Bill Gates has donated over half of his earnings to charity organizations and starting his own as well. Gates will go down in history as a philanthropist before anything else. The above statement of donating it all is also true - he plans to donate all of his cash someday, leaving only a 'necessary' amount for his kids. He doesn't care about being the richest man in the world and that much should be obvious.
- polymorphist, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12Yes. Although I don't like his business model, but for that, he has my respect, unlike many other billionaires on the list.

- nixonrichard, on 10/11/2007, -10/+46I have a feeling none of his money will be making its way to Africa.
- shazaamomight, on 10/11/2007, -4/+61None of his money should go to Africa and none of yours or mine either. African aid is exactly what is causing such appalling poverty in Africa. it stifles economics and promotes violent greedy dictatorships. If sending money to Africa worked so well then why does the continent continue to be the poorest in the world despite hundreds of billions in aid and a wealth of natural resources?
- Rhino2, on 10/11/2007, -6/+33Because they are using it wrong?
Buy a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man how to fish and he eats for a life time.
We're doing the former. We are "Giving" out billions of fish to billions of people; but doing almost nothing to teach them how to fish for themselves. Hence the problem.- nyx210, on 10/11/2007, -15/+6Well, it's a little difficult to fish when there's no water around, don't you think?
- electrichead, on 10/11/2007, -0/+36Actually, the correct analogy would be to chuck fish in the general direction of the people, where a few men with big nets can grab all of them for themselves.
- InferiorWang, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Give people enough "fish" and native "fishermen" can't compete so they stop "fishing."
To put it another way, we're hurting their economy by undercutting local producers. - saranagati, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8no, i think the correct analogy for africa is "give a man a match and he'll be warm for an hour, set him on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life". I think we're doing the latter
- virtualball, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3No it's when you give a starving African a fish, he could eat for a week but uses the match to become a fisherman so he could fish for more aid and then..... well I'm lost. But Rhino is right. It's like a family on welfare, are they more likely to get a job now, or just rely on the welfare money? Yup, you guessed it!
- Mearn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15No, we're giving out billions of fish to their leaders.
- Rhino2, on 10/11/2007, -6/+33Because they are using it wrong?

There are very very very few mexican corporations... It isn't like America or the EU or Canada where people are willing to compete especially when they are rich.
- abdrahman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Bingo! Part of the reason Mexico is a ***** is that, although they have more natural resources than the US, corruption runs rampant, and the rich White elite in Mexico don't give a ***** about the "half-breeds".

- DavidtheDuke, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Capitalism where humans run things (aka ANY SYSTEM), money always enters into the equation when it comes to influence, aka government. Centralization of power via either pure communism or pure capitalism is a never ending battle between freedom and opression.

- sinikol, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Hahaha jealous bitter bitch, america is not 1 redneck. Typical american mentality, yeah dude all mexicans in mexico are poor, your sooo right. Dumbass peice of *****, haha a mexican is 1 haha.
- nossr50, on 10/11/2007, -7/+35Bill gates gave away half of his fortune to charity, I'll be impressed when this guy hits the 100 billion mark
- Darph.Bobo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Exactly right!
- mbradbury, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Bill's fortune when from 100 million down to 60Million or so when the dot com bubble burst. He has given a lot to charity but not half of his fortune.
- trer, on 10/11/2007, -22/+23We're not Mexican'ts, We're MexiCANS!
- TherealObadiah, on 10/11/2007, -16/+4Uh, this guy's wealth is measured in Pesos. Measured dollar-for-dollar, Gates is still on top by a wide margin. However, the guy still ain't no pauper.
- Wacer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3No it states his wealth in British Pounds as well so the dollar amount is American money.
- ozid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3lol @ being measured in Peso's. I don't think the writer would have overseen the fact that A peso isn't even worth 10 cents, considering the whole point is this guy is richer than Gates now.
- Smokeymcpot, on 10/11/2007, -8/+65Maybe Chinese Women will want his sperm now instead...
- Rust, on 10/11/2007, -4/+0the hell do u kno about chinese women?

Don't get your panties in a bunch. Read more than Digg and you'll find out that Bill Gates' sperm is most wanted by Chinese women....it was in the news. Smokeymcpot wasn't trying to slam Chinese women, he was trying to make funny social commentary.
- Rust, on 10/11/2007, -4/+0the hell do u kno about chinese women?
- pastasauce, on 10/11/2007, -12/+3Great. Now Bill is going to push more Vista Only products so he can try to get back on top.

- AdonalFoyle, on 10/11/2007, -8/+36Seriously, if monopolies were legal in the U.S. like the one Carlos Slim has in Mexico, Bill Gates and Microsoft would have dominated the PC market and all its counterparts YEARS ago.
- tutivlahos, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Microsoft dominated the pc market for many years. It still dominates if you think about it....
- DarkPrincess74, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Here's a tip look up subtly in the dictionary.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 10/11/2007, -10/+2LOL.
Microsoft IS a monopoly. Where have you been?- kokojie, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3It could've been much worse. Microsoft has been forced to help their competition's software work better on MS windows.
- avalenci, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6well ... you have microsoft and AT&T.
- supaklaw, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Uh who says there aren't monopolies in the U.S.? Con Edison or any electric utility? Cable companies? The giant ant controlled sugar mines? Oh wait, that's 10 years from now... I've said too much!

More recently, Mr Slim has developed a charitable foundation aimed at improving healthcare and education in his country, pledging funds of $10bn over four years. He has made it clear, however, that he does not intend to loosen his grip on his empire, telling Reuters: "Wealth is like an orchard. You have to share the fruit, not the trees."
So he isn't just hoarding his fortune.- VitriolAndAngst, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I find it pretty hard to believe that an honest man amassed such a fortune in Mexico.
If he is a good man, more power to him. I'd still want more proof. I know too much about the history of Bill Gates to say that he was honorable. And America has a slightly more egalitarian system than Mexico in which to get wealthy. - manoftheisland, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1he still has over 57 Billion dollars!!! not hoarding??? seriously you cant spend 57 billion.
- abdrahman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0yeah you can, quite easily in fact.... just give out science grants.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I find it pretty hard to believe that an honest man amassed such a fortune in Mexico.
- bodger, on 10/11/2007, -2/+53This explains why he never paid out for that email beta test I took part in a few months ago. I was assured that he would be paying me $245 for every person I forwarded it to :-( .

- iafx, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Lets look back at the All time USA vs Mexico count...
Wins - 29 for Mexico, 13 for the US
All time Goals - 115 for Mexico, 58 for the US
Bottom line is Mexico is North Americas soccer King!

- Blairisloser, on 10/11/2007, -14/+1This man is NOT the richest man. People of real wealth do not have their names even appear on this list. They are mainly VERY wealthy investment financiers.
- nick1000, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Members of secret societies who would bring about the New World Order?
- grzyb, on 10/11/2007, -6/+13I think it shows that Gates and Buffett are more charitable, because Slim could be doing a lot to give back to the people of Mexico (who need considerable financial help to get the economy back in shape), but he'd rather keep the money for himself. I'd say the change in ranking is humbling and reminds us that money isn't everything.
- Wacer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I agree, I would like to compare charitable contributions from Gates and Slim to see who gives back the most.

- WiZZLa, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17This has happened before; once in 2000 when Oracle CEO Larry Ellison's stock options made him worth more than Bill Gates for a few days.
http://news.com.com/2100-1001-239838.html or http://www.wired.com/techbiz/media/news/2000/04/35871 ...that was until Oracle's stock price fell and his worth was halved. http://www.computerworld.com.au/index.php/id;1157273765- mandarin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Larry Ellison is just another blow-hard... likes boats... like Carlos..
- encognito, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Slim said the following when he overtook Buffet, "The stock market goes up and the stock market goes down." He doesn't sound like a guy who gives a crap about being the richest in the world.
- abdrahman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Why would one care when even if you are #3 you still have >30 billion dollars to spend?
- DarthJay, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10Wow...90% of the phone lines in Mexico are owned by this guy. Plus, he owns Grupo Carso which, among other things, owns CompUSA. He sounds legit. He's also been on the Board of Directors at SBC and Philip Morris. Dude's got power AND money. If he were good looking he'd be awesome....but alas (see his pic on WikiPedia)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Slim_Hel%C3%BA- darkphoenix939, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1so he wants to make movies where people don't leave after rubbing out one?
- andburn1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Wait, isn't that the company that makes Sesame Street? No? Yes? I know it's some weird ass name like that. Or maybe it's Rugrats. Actually, I think it's Rugrats. HELP ME HERE PEOPLE.
- mikefitz2, on 10/11/2007, -9/+4Everyone: Yes, Bill does give a lot of his earnings to charity as the article points out. 8 of you have already stated this as though it was your original thought. Please stop already.
- DarthJay, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9I'll bet nobody knew this, but Bill Gates has donated a lot of money to charity.
- andburn1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Did you know he runs a foundation with over 30 bil in endowment? Betcha didn't. He's a do-gooder. *nod*
- gibsonic, on 10/11/2007, -5/+25im not a M$ fanboi but Bill Gates for all his dodgy behavior over the years really is a modern day Robin Hood...takes from the rich and gives to the poor. Relatively speaking even the poorest places in the US are rich compared to the places bill is giving his money.
- mythicflux, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1I remember a few years ago CNN covered Bill Gates giving a few hundred million dollars to India to fight various health problems there. I remember thinking that it was rather impressive that Bill Gates, then CEO of Microsoft Corporation would put so much money into India. 3 days later Microsoft announced a plan increase developers and push the Windows platform in India to reduce developers working with Linux and competing platforms.
I'm not sure I can agree with the Robin Hood analogy. Every time I think of Bill Gates and charity I always question a double motive. This isn't to say I always did but with the above example I've learned that while the charity may be good the ambiguity of why really gets to me.- andburn1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1... Cuz he wants to do good? Or, otherwise, he wants people to like him? Hey - if I had 60 bil, I'd shell out a few here and there to have everyone think I was a saint. But I do think his motives are pure. Anyways, the foundation is mostly handled by Melinda - he's just the money. It's not like it affects his lifestyle. He could give away all but a billion, and not have to change anything about his life. After a certain point, it's just a number.
- andburn1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Well, he's really not "taking" from the rich... he is the rich.
- mythicflux, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1I remember a few years ago CNN covered Bill Gates giving a few hundred million dollars to India to fight various health problems there. - praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+4Well, he was born and raised in Mexico, so I think that makes him Mexican (nationality wise).
- AlvyB, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Right, and there are millions of Irish, Italians, etc. in the U.S. What's your point? Mexican is not a race any more than American is. Why don't you ask him what he considers himself to be?
