- StigNordas, on 10/23/2009, -1/+22All I can think of is "Too big to fail" when looking at the ginormous US banking machines.
- kostka, on 10/23/2009, -3/+21In bubble charts, the area of the circle should be proportional to what you're plotting.
In *this* bubble chart, instead radius is proportional to bank size. So it greatly exaggerates the differences. If you look at the numbers instead of areas, they're not nearly as difference as the chart makes it seem. - Frixionburne, on 10/23/2009, -3/+12Errr....
No Deutsche Bank in Europe? And i don't see RBS (own Charter One for example) listed anywhere as well.
Methinks this is not quite right. - xwatermelon, on 10/23/2009, -1/+6Cool comment.
- LBUCHA, on 10/23/2009, -1/+6surprised how small citi is
- pcoleman18, on 10/23/2009, -1/+5So I'm with Suntrust. Does that make me the equivalent of an indie fan?
- orb_nsc, on 10/23/2009, -1/+4Try clicking on it.
- cheddaro, on 10/23/2009, -1/+4Am I the only one that is getting upset with this trend of writing an entire article that references some "infographic" but then making the picture too small to view by default?
- xwatermelon, on 10/23/2009, -1/+4You're so creative.
- wesl56, on 10/23/2009, -0/+3I switched to Suntrust from BOA about 3 years ago and it was the best decision ever. Its nice to actually get great customer service from the people you give your money to.
- skribble, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2Why are JP Morgan & Chase separate?
- mwtapp, on 10/23/2009, -2/+4Who has the biggest cojones?
- zoomer123, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2They only list the top ten and Deutsche Bank is definitely bigger than Credit Suisse. Nomura is so much bigger than Bank of Communications. And I think they're also missing Macquarie.
So I too think this is not quite right. - mparker21311, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2Seems all of those overdraft fees have made them a ton.
When our debt is spiraling out of control it's nice to know the banks bank on us. Thank you, Mr. Bank. Thanks a lot. - sgtblast, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1Yea was about to ask the same thing. Is this graph old?
- evil-doer, on 10/23/2009, -1/+2absolutely ***** graphic. they used the diameter of the circles as reference and not the area.
for example, wells fargo is approximately double the number american express is, but the area of the wells fargo bubble is ~4 times as massive.
EDIT: oops. "kostka" made the same point earlier. - lanky22, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1Woo, 4th in the world!
- nuance2k5, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1I think this list is not accurate. No banks or financial institutions from Singapore/India/Malaysia/Indonesia area. If I remember correctly the State Bank of India has over 250 billion dollars in assets, Macquarie of Australia has over 200 billion dollars in assets. Some of the banks mentioned in this graphic have less than a billion in assets. So, obviously I think this list is not complete.
- kd1s, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1And if you're wondering, Grupo Santander in North America is otherwise known as Sovereign Bank.
- aasukisuki, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1I suspect that if you looked at a map like this 3 or 4 years ago, Citi would have a much larger piece of the pie.
- TheStrongForce, on 10/23/2009, -1/+2I was just thinking that. Bank of America is labeled as 18 while HSBC is 6. BoA should be 3 times bigger, but its 9 times bigger because it looks like the graphics designer thought that a circle with 3 times the radius meant a circle that was three times bigger. LE SIGH.
- FutureGuy, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1yes, wonder when they shrank so much. I guess citi went to sleep or the data behind the beautiful graphics is not accurate.
- Atario, on 10/24/2009, -0/+1They should have just gone all the way and made them /spheres/ with radius plotted -- differences cubed.
- edwartica, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1So glad my bank is not on this list. They keep it small and they couldn't be doing any better.
- cheddaro, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1Oh wow, thanks! Haha, I was wondering what this dangol' mouse was for.
I meant that it pisses me off that they make the pic almost big enough to be readable, but juuuust not quite.
Yes, I know it's just a mouse click, but it's annoying. - FK0123, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1That would be because this graphic doesn't represent bank size (which is a little misleading imo). It looks to me like they just used market value of the company's stock which is correlated to how big a bank is, but not the same thing -- especially with how much stock prices have been jumping around on these banks recently.
If Citi's stock tanked and fell by 50% tomorrow because of some bad news, it would in no way mean that the size of the bank is 50 percent less. If this were true, it'd also mean that Citi has more than tripled in 'size' since it's low point earlier this year. - pcoleman18, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1Yup, I love it. My local branch knows me by name and the employees will always strike up an interesting conversation with me while I'm there.
Unfortunately, they don't have any where I go to college, so I have to use Wachovia now. It's just not the same :( - itignition, on 10/23/2009, -0/+1Thanks for this. good post.
- Gregfr, on 10/23/2009, -3/+3They could at least explain how they're calculating these "brand values" which do not mean anything.
- xwatermelon, on 10/23/2009, -4/+5If you get dugg up I am leaving Digg.
- stburke, on 10/23/2009, -1/+1lol at Mexico.
- vtstarin, on 10/23/2009, -5/+4Great infographic of global banking brands
- Bonksnp, on 10/23/2009, -2/+1I guess the measurements stop at million on banking info graphics.
- medost, on 10/23/2009, -6/+2Cool graphics.
- YesterdaysFav, on 10/23/2009, -3/+0But.. Where's BMO on this list?
- screwkevin, on 10/23/2009, -4/+0So... Wells Fargo is 10 times larger than Citi or only 3 times? What should I trust - the numbers or the graphic?
- KyloOb, on 10/23/2009, -5/+1Lovely colours, what do the numbers mean... It's dollars, but of what and where?
- papashawn, on 10/23/2009, -5/+1isn't brand value somewhat of an intangible asset?
- nojoegohome, on 10/23/2009, -5/+0This is actually wrong/ outdated my bet santander has gained quite a bit more ground than that.
- jakobrowning, on 10/23/2009, -6/+1Another freakin' graphic?!
- Turkman182, on 10/23/2009, -13/+1Wow, sort of made thinks make sense. Sort of.

What is Digg?
