- Jhonka, on 11/04/2009, -0/+52Where's the pie chart?
- contemplative, on 11/04/2009, -2/+52This article is useless because it makes no adjustment for cost of living.
- thirdeyeopen, on 11/04/2009, -0/+32I am very disappointed with the lack of pie charts. I was led to believe there would be pie charts!

- theghostofme, on 11/04/2009, -0/+10Down at the very, very bottom. This is why I don't like it that Digg won't let you choose the photo other than one or two on the page that have nothing to do with the story.
- glberns, on 11/04/2009, -0/+8its okay, us mathematicians can't spell anything in the first place. We just stick to our numbers.
- yodamaniac, on 11/04/2009, -1/+9Aww... I expected it in Pie Chart Form. Now I realize that the pie chart is just about SPENDING money.

- faizal5k, on 11/04/2009, -0/+8North Carolina has a lot of fat people. Is that why chiropractors make good money?
- YagLana, on 11/04/2009, -1/+9Cool story bro
- zr0skill, on 11/04/2009, -2/+9Ah, yes. What wonderful, backwards logic.
1) I'm not sure how old you are, but it's quite possible that something has changed in education in at least two decades.
2) Of course there are worthless piece of crap teachers who don't deserve a high salary. Just like there are worthless, piece of crap lawyers, politicians, accountants, CEOs, etc.
3) Let's say you are a bright, young, college-educated teacher who has decided they want to change the world, one student at a time. I'm assuming that they are ready to be everything that your worthless teachers aren't. They get into a school with a starting salary that just barely lets them live from paycheck to paycheck in a neighborhood that doesn't make them feel safe or secure. Each and every day they are faced with the challenge of taking 20-25+ students and forming them into the kinds of people that everyone wants them to be, except no one wants to help them get there. For example, the governor of the state stands up at election time and claims he will reform education, and then cuts millions of dollars of funding in order to plug up a hole elsewhere. Or the parents all complain when there children aren't learning mathematics correctly, but once it's time to find a parent to volunteer or to help make a donation towards buying new textbooks, no one steps up.
Do you think that teacher is going to stick around for very long when they are A) underpaid, B) broke, C) scared of their work/home environment, and D) receiving almost no support from the people around them? - FritoPendejo, on 11/04/2009, -0/+6You just argued against your own... point?
- allisonV12, on 11/04/2009, -0/+6What is wrong with the South, are they still paying in Confederate dollars.
Especially Alabama, why is that the lowest paying state for any profession? - FritoPendejo, on 11/04/2009, -2/+8Boohoo. I'm tired of hearing about how teachers should supposedly be making so much more money, and I say this while thinking about some of the worthless pieces of crap who I had to listen to growing up. We need choice in education. This will lead to better salaries.
- finalheaven07, on 11/04/2009, -0/+6Those teachers are the worst ones, by the way. I've been studying education and learning styles for a couple years now, and the students who have the worst "test scores" (which I hate standardized testing) tend to have the teachers who take no interest in actually teaching - all they do is read right out of a book. I, as a teaching assistant, have taught my students more about Biology in one semester than they have learned in their entire lives because I took an interest in them - yet, I'll get paid much less than someone who phoned it in years ago because they got tenure. Do away with tenure, then you'll see that teaching is NOT just "something someone off the street" can do. You don't have to be remotely smart to re-read a book. That's how most teachers teach, and our education system is completely ***** up because of it...most of the students produced can barely read a whole book, balance a checkbook, or make an informed decision about whether or not to buy a product advertised on TV as being the "next miracle weight-loss pill!". To be someone who has made a person better not only in learning a subject, but giving them the tools they'll need to rationally think in the future...that, my friend, takes a special kind of person. No monkey could do that.
- cashhh, on 11/04/2009, -0/+6No, I was commenting on their spelling mistake of North Carolina.
- TheHungerArtist, on 11/04/2009, -0/+5While interesting I doubt if these numbers mean much if you take into account both cost of living and the added qualifications for the jobs.
- k3rfuffl3, on 11/04/2009, -0/+5I'm guessing it may have something to do with cost of living.
- SpykerSpeed, on 11/04/2009, -1/+6Most politicians are lawyers, so they protect their craft by limiting entry (via licensure) and increasing possible "winnings" (via legislation).

- WiretapStudios, on 11/04/2009, -0/+4It takes a large savings, and at least two years to even get out of operating in the red for a small business. Not to mention nobody is giving loans to small businesses right now.
- atroxodisse, on 11/04/2009, -0/+4Better question. Who needs a Real Estate Appraiser in East Arkansas? Does he need to know the depreciation on a Chevy up on blocks and a moldy couch on the lawn?
- cheddaro, on 11/04/2009, -0/+4Go teach something worth learning, and you will find yourself making a lot more money.
Every doe-eyed 15 year old girl in the world wants to "teach." So you end up with millions of people that aren't particularly smart in any area wanting to teach children American history, or elementary level math. Why pay them $100,000 a year when the next 22 year old kid fresh out of college would love to do it for $30,000-$40,000?
Teachers are the only ones besides maybe cops and grocery baggers that feel they are entitled to make some crazy amount of money for doing a job that pretty much anyone off the street can and would do. You don't have to be a genius to pick up a teachers book, memorize your lesson, and then recite that lesson to the class. Hell, most of my teachers would just read right out of the book, or at least reference it in class. - stillhateyou, on 11/04/2009, -0/+4I can understand the frustration that lawyers and sales managers make more money than teachers, but anesthesiologists deserve their salaries.
- pgiessel, on 11/04/2009, -0/+4California requires you to pass both the standard PE exam and an additional 8 hour exam on seismic issues before you are an engineer registered in the State of California. It actually has one of the toughest PE requirements in the nation.
