- willsani, on 11/05/2008, -3/+164Mistake No. 1: He went to Best Buy
Mistake No. 2: He trusted a sales person and bought a bogus warranty that isn't necessarily provided by the manufacturer but only good with Best Buy.
Mistake No. 3: He took the laptop back to Best Buy
Mistake No. 4: He trusted Geek Squad, which thanks to the many Digg articles we know are bunch of nincompoops. - Dinsdale77, on 11/04/2008, -0/+108This is why I shop at the Buymore.
- dvsbastard, on 11/05/2008, -9/+72Note: A $2200 laptop is not still worth $2200 a year later...
- Bogo, on 11/04/2008, -0/+54Those plans are worthless - too much money, too many problems.
- TheMachine1, on 11/05/2008, -0/+48Extended warranties = total fraud.
- dnasty27, on 11/04/2008, -1/+46That's what you get for shopping at Best Buy unfortunately.
- iritegood, on 11/05/2008, -1/+44But it's not worth an Eee PC either.
The price was obviously because of the form-factor, not the specs. - oSiK, on 11/05/2008, -6/+47***** Best Buy.
- CoreyTamas, on 11/05/2008, -0/+33I don't tend to put much stock in the occasional story about a store screwing up or ripping off a customer. It's not that I'm unsympathetic. It's just that one or two articles can't be taken as a fair representation of what happens throughout the entire chain.
And then there's Best Buy. I read a different article about them almost every week. That's not "an occasional story". That's what we call a "pattern".
And that's why I won't shop there. - junglist1319, on 11/05/2008, -0/+32Maybe they'll throw in a free HDTV calibration to make up the difference:
http://digg.com/television/Best_Buy_Lies_To_Sell_T ... - Charun, on 11/05/2008, -1/+29Shop smart.

- Crath, on 11/05/2008, -1/+21NewEgg ftw.
- mattsx, on 11/05/2008, -0/+18dugg for nincompoop
- runnerr0, on 11/04/2008, -7/+24Research...research...then research somemore...BEFORE you buy anything.
Put it another way ..look before you leap.
- anttheman101, on 11/05/2008, -3/+19i work at best buy....i hate it..
- Igorism, on 11/05/2008, -1/+15That doesn't matter when you have a WARRANTY.
- satauros, on 11/05/2008, -2/+15I remember when Best Buy tried to replace my broken TV with one of their employees...
- smacksaw, on 11/05/2008, -1/+14Time for small claims court.
- OutThere, on 11/05/2008, -0/+12I bought a 22" monitor from staples. They tried to sell me the warranty, but I said no. Come to find out, the monitor company sells an extended warranty of their own WHICH YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BUY UNTIL THE DAY BEFORE THE ORIGINAL ENDS!!!! On top of that, you can EXTEND THE EXTENDED WARRANTY!!! Their warranty is even cheaper than Staples!
- theonlywizdum, on 11/05/2008, -0/+11was she hot?
- snurfle, on 11/05/2008, -0/+10...So now you have a Mexican dishwasher?
- mattsx, on 11/05/2008, -1/+11i can't tell whether you're trying to make a joke or if you missed the joke.
- iritegood, on 11/05/2008, -2/+12Research what?
Whether the laptop was a good deal? I don't think that would've helped him here. He got ripped off by stupid Best Buy employees, no amount of research would've protected him. - Emachine, on 11/05/2008, -2/+12Wow, 2 anti-BB front page stories in the same evening...
- BeBigs, on 11/05/2008, -1/+10I stopped shopping at LargeMart after this kind of stuff started happening...
- gquaglia, on 11/05/2008, -1/+10I refuse to ever shop at Best Buy.
- inactive, on 11/05/2008, -0/+8and some monster hdmi cables
- TheVirus, on 11/05/2008, -1/+9Not all people that work in the Geek Squad are retards, it's their ***** policies that they have and the company that provides the insurance. I worked for Geek Squad for a summer and it wasn't bad. The guys I worked with were intelligent but couldn't do much because of Best Buy's policies. We do what we are told and since we're not management, we really can't much if there's a problem. Also, unless the Best Buy protection changed in the last year or two, it doesn't cover it if it was dropped. Regardless of what the sales person says, it's all in the pamphlet they get.
- iritegood, on 11/05/2008, -1/+9If everyone that has had a bad experience at Best Buy posted a Digg article about it, our whole front page would be anti-BB stories.
***** Best Buy. - inactive, on 11/05/2008, -0/+8Best Buy sucks and is SHADY! I know, I used to work there. The worst part are the 7am Saturday morning employee brainwashing sessions.
- santaliqueur, on 11/05/2008, -0/+8If form factor wasn't figured in, that's NOT spec for spec.
- MarkOfTheDead, on 11/05/2008, -0/+7Be careful, Best Buy management hates honesty.
- chaoswings, on 11/05/2008, -0/+7Sorry I have to ask how do you run through so many laptops? You bring them on roller coaster rides with you or something?
Or are you one of those people who has *convenient* accidents? - Samohtneas, on 11/05/2008, -0/+6***** thing sucks?
- fade79, on 11/05/2008, -1/+7Apparently you didn't read it. The manager refused to look at Sony's prices.
- natemichals, on 11/05/2008, -2/+8i hated every warranty that i ever sold at circuit city and only sold them because i felt my job would be terminated if i didn't. they were way overpriced and generally not worth it for 99% of customers. it felt like a huge ripoff trying to "recommend" it to anyone, this is exactly the kind of stuff a company would try to justify. complete garbage, i never buy warranties on any electronics. my opinion is that if it is a good name product and stopped failed, most of the time it was because it got knocked around or dropped in shipment or being unloaded in the back of the warehouse. i worked in the warehouse of a circuit city and i saw some very careless people...but that's what you get with a company that shows such little honesty with it's customer regarding things like service plans. i am sure best buy is not any different than the store i worked at. i think this guy got ripped off.....considering he probably paid $400 for the service plan...he could have just bought the asus eeepc practically...really, he got a bad deal, i would be pretty upset too. it's tough for some of the salespeople that work there though, having to sell something that you know is not worth it and a little shady, some of the employees are just doing their best to work through school, but the company that puts people up to this ought to seriously be ashamed, no wonder the stock prices are $0.25 per share or whatever.....
- greevar, on 11/05/2008, -1/+6Alternatively, the Dell protection plans are really nice. I worked at the laptop service office at my college and their accidental protection plan is top notch. I've seen people come in with the most hideous damage and either walk away with new parts or a whole new laptop. In one case, a student's Latitude D600 was totaled and Dell replaced it with a D820. It was probably a refurb, but not a bad outcome. I've seen people with a repair list a mile long and they still get repairs regardless of whether or not the repairs cost the same as a new laptop. So, don't get the store's plan. Get the manufacturer's plan instead.
- Spire3660, on 11/05/2008, -0/+5Seriously, why are you breaking 2-3 notebooks a year? My original laptop, i lugged everyday through 4 years of college, every class. It functions to this day 8 years after I bought it.
- Namesbond, on 11/05/2008, -0/+5I have worked in Geek Squad and it is all true.
- Namesbond, on 11/05/2008, -1/+6Replace means same model. He wasn't trying to get the new model just the one that was destroyed.
- Namesbond, on 11/05/2008, -1/+6***** Best Buy
Just buy from sony.com and get your warranty from sony. They would have shipped you the exact same model and paid your shipping. Best Buy always carries the older versions of the Vaios anyway and charge the same as the new models on sony.com. - 11oops, on 11/05/2008, -0/+5Weight, screen size, and thickness are all specs that should also be taken into consideration by BB in this case when considering an equivalent replacement.
- alexnb185, on 11/05/2008, -0/+5What do they say at these sessions?
- z3021017, on 11/05/2008, -5/+10After using a Sony TZ, I'd have to say it is best quality laptop I have ever used.
And this is after using laptops from Apple, Acer, BenQ, Dell, Sony, IBM, Lenovo and HP. - DifferentAngle, on 11/05/2008, -0/+5The weird part was that he knows about the consumerist but he still shopped there...
- cknyan, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4It's an ultra portable with 1g memory. That's not easy to find and not cheap to buy. $1700 would have been reasonable.
- Littledevil8701, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4Basically its Circuit City sucks, sell warranties sign people up for the ridiculously high interest card and if you don't you're fired. That's what is said from 7am to 10am. God I hated working at Best Buy
- locojones, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4Research the return and warranty policies of the store from which you are thinking of making the purchase. So yes, asking the right questions could indeed protect a consumer from this same fate.
