- strafefire, on 11/23/2008, -35/+189How to create 2 millions jobs in the US, without raising taxes or inflating the ***** out of our currency:
*Create a lower tax environment for foreign companies to build plants in the US, because it is obvious our own companies do not want to stay.
*Allow companies that are in trouble to fail. You will lose a lot of jobs instantly, but they will all be regained with the auctioning off of the assets of the deceased. You want alternative energy? Imagine what can happen it Tesla, Aptera, or THINK get there hands on the plants, machines, and assembly processes of Ford or GM.
*Close almost every overseas military base and reopen some our closed military bases here in the states. Instant increase in sales in the areas of base openings and lower cost for the US tax payer. Need to keep some bases open? Fine, Bahrain can stay since Bahrain gives us a nice kick back for keeping that base open, maybe Okinawa...
*Get rid of a lot of Government departments such as Education, HUD, Susquhenna river basin commission, etc.
*Obviously, the president is not going to toss the FED out the window -- like they should -- so since they are going to keep them, raise rates and keep them high. Because, if they really want to be Keynesians, they need to have VERY high rates when times are good [12% and above], and lower rates if ***** hits the fan. Under REAL Keynesian economics, you are to be a capitalist when times are good, and a socialist TOWARDS YOUR PEOPLE (not companies), when times get bad. Keynesian economics do not state BAIL OUT COMPANIES.
*REMOVE ALL SUBSIDIES! PERIOD! A lot of people say that Alternative Energy Companies should get a subsidy. Well, guess what? Exxon Mobil and Chevron Texaco can count as alternative energy companies just by changing a few bylaws since they both cumulatively own the majority of alternative energy patents out there. I don't my tax dollars going to private companies -- period. If all else fails, please remove the subsidies that you have on the Oil, gas, and coal industries.
*REMOVE ALL COMMODITY related subsidies. A lot of people do not know that American sugar, rice, cotton, etc are subisidies thereby keeping the price of these commodities [and more] high? Billionaire Trader Jim Rogers actually calulated that it'd be cheaper to pay every farmer $100,000 per year for the rest of their lives, give each a Porsche, and pay for their housing for the rest of their lives, and it'd save the government AND US Tax payers 50Million per year.
*Fix restrictions on patents please. If there is anything that should be done on this list it should be this. As matter of fact, this is the number one thing to do. PERIOD!
*Legalize weed and tax it via licensing at the federal level [like you do the alcohol and tobacco companies], then aggressively pursue those who violate the licenses [like you do moonshiners]. Granted, with weed it is harder to do this, and lot of potheads are going to hate me for saying this, but although it comes from the ground, and although it does wonderful things for us, if they legalize it, consider it a gift.
*Allow America to regain our status as the #1 Hemp leader in the world. Hemp Oil, Hemp Clothe, etc., kicks ass and can help create jobs.
*But man, we really need to do a NEW DEAL!!! Fine, take every non violent criminal and put them to work on this thing then. Give them a choice: Max punishment for sentence, or work 1-2 years fixing roads or digging ditches and *****. I'd love to see the CEOs of Lehman and Goldman shoveling asphalt into a road.
TL;DR: Legalize hemp, stop subsidizing *****, create more favorable tax laws to promote foreign companies to open here in states, close almost all overseas military bases, and number one: REDO LAWS ON PATENTS!!!
I am Strafefire, and I approve this message! - SheilaNoya, on 11/23/2008, -22/+126It's about damn time that we actually built something here in America and started fixing our infrastructure. Under Bush, our entire focus was on blowing up crap in other countries and then trying to rebuild whatever he destroyed.
It's time to fix AMERICA now and create more jobs in the process.
Economists are already forecasting that the unemployement rate is going to rise to 9% by mid-2009 just based on our current economic crisis. We can no longer afford just to sit on our ass and "wait" to see if things improve. It's time for action now. - AgentMull, on 11/22/2008, -4/+68We aren't spending more on education, we're spending more on teaching to stupid federal tests that provide a very poor basis for a good education.
- DinosaurDerek, on 11/23/2008, -11/+71two words: legalize it.
- rolf, on 11/23/2008, -27/+81Contrary to popular myth, the New Deal and all that spending did not get us out of the Depression, WW2 did.
Japan has tried 10 stimulus packages in the last decade, each one bigger than the last, and all it did was raise their debt even more. - whoreable, on 11/22/2008, -13/+58I love it when people call this the New New Deal.
- Trekhawk, on 11/23/2008, -44/+87Whoa, whoa! The answer to our economic woes is MORE deficit spending?
- 2Six119, on 09/10/2009, -9/+49Yes, on things that matter, smart investments. Not throwing cash bonuses out at GM and Ford.
- FrankDrebbin, on 11/23/2008, -10/+47Low life ghetto dwellers eh? Maybe you should try living in or at least visiting some of the more impoverished parts of the US before you demonize people who weren't born to rich parents. I would tell you to grow up, but I get the feeling you will always be a douche regardless of age.
You know carrying this hatred for people you've never met is only a burden for yourself. But expressing that hatred and spouting your bull ***** is a burden on all human kind. Please, consider pulling your head out of your ass and taking a nice breath of fresh air.
PS. I am not suggesting there is any validity to your redistribution of wealth talking point. - DigSomeMore, on 11/22/2008, -8/+40We could use some help over here...
- odkin, on 11/23/2008, -11/+42The Government CANNOT CREATE JOBS. By definition, government work is a net LOSS to the economy, as government jobs TAKE money from productive wealth creators. Thus the REAL economy is drained, just to produce make-work, and with the drain usally comes a net reduction in private sector workers. Only government jobs which create infrastructue useful by commerce, i.e. roads, have any kind of payback. Everything else is usually just patronage to the massive government workers union, or an attempt to recruit more dependent voters who rely on government for their liveliehood.
As far as the Auto bailout, they aren't bailing out automakers. They are bailing out the members of the UAW, which is the entity that's causing automakers to be unsustainable to begin with! - inactive, on 11/22/2008, -7/+38I can only imagine how scary the world must seem to recent graduates. I know some brilliant people who are unemployed right now, even with several years of professional experience.
- damiandt, on 11/23/2008, -21/+50So, nothing about oh say the 50,000 troops in Germany? You know, part of the 700 bases we have outside of this country.
I mean, if we brought our troops home for a solid DEFENSE we could save 1 TRILLION a year not to mention investing in our own country.
That could pay for it.
Or, end the failed war on drugs.
Or, stop wasteful government spending. You know, like billions spent on the dept of Education created in 1980. It's oh so helpful. We were able to go to the Moon with publicly educated people. What good does it do?
Or cut back federal spending to 1995 levels and eliminate the IRS since the income of the gov't only 45% comes from the people itself. What a concept that the people get to keep the money they earn.
Or, maybe listen to the people who PREDICTED this crisis instead of those who CREATED IT.
Just a thought.
But since he nominated a former head of the FED, business as usual.
Oh, the change - Headinawheel, on 11/23/2008, -7/+34Why the hell are people considering this to be the apocalypse? Everybody's going insane; almost to the point of idiocy.
People elected him for a reason: because we believe in his ability to deliver what he promised. He hasn't even taken office yet and people are already passing judgement. Don't people typically only wait until the 5 month mark to do that? How about we just wait and see, and just think rationally? - lukedamonkey, on 11/23/2008, -5/+31lets see how big that crazy number can go...
- Spuy767, on 11/23/2008, -2/+28It should be illegal to sit on a patent. A patent should expire very quickly if a product is not created related to said patent.
- pintomp3, on 11/23/2008, -9/+35funny how conservatives are always anti-education. after sputnik, we invested heavily in our schools which put us at the forefront of technology. thanks to the reagan revolution and the "moral majority" we now teach creationism and abstinence-only education. no wonder we are so far behind in the maths and sciences. the growing anti-rationalism and anti-intellectualism in this country is going to ruin it. some of the founding fathers wanted a national standard for education because geography shouldn't determine the quality of your education.

It was written 5,000 years ago by a Chinese general, but it is genius even to this day. Anyone who says war is "good for the economy" has got to be kidding themselves! Exactly what is economically beneficial for war?? The government inflates the currency, increases taxes, runs up deficits and broadens the debt burden, then after they do all of this, they draft millions of Americans and take them out of the workforce, and then take over factories to build tanks, bombs, and airstrikers, which would have been used for consumer goods and capital investment. Quit with the high school history education. It's sickening.
Do you honestly believe World War II was good for America?? Go ask your grandparents and see how much they had to sacrifice. All of the rationing, the 94% tax rates (which is what made Ronald Reagan such a supporter of supply-side economics), and the hundreds of thousands dead. Oh yes, if only we could have war all the time. How's Iraq panning out for us?? Why is World War II the anomaly that made us rich and no other war?? Why did Vietnam create the economic stagflation of the 1970's?? World War I created the need for massive expansion of the money supply which created the 1929 recession that led to the Great Depression. How on earth is World War II glorified to be economically necessary?
Contrary to your misconceptions, government cannot get us out of economic calamity by doing more, much less getting into wars. For one, government cannot create wealth. They can only take money from one person to redistribute it. That's all it has the power to do, and wealth cannot be produced by the printing press.
Why is this man being dugg up?? - Phernoree, on 11/23/2008, -1/+21You have a lemonade stand, and 3 of your neighborhood friends have lemonade stands as well. One of your friends, Jimmy, is making no money due to the poor placement of his stand.... do you honestly think that you'd stand a chance at making an even greater profit by bailing Jimmy out? And if so, please explain.
- draculthemad, on 11/23/2008, -12/+31Except we DO still need to repair our roads and modernise our schools. The job-creation benefits in the short term are just that, the short-term benefits.
Just like the new deal may or may not have gotten us out of the depression, but it certainly paved the way( in some instances, literally) for the prosperity of later decades. - Surferess, on 11/22/2008, -4/+23WW-FDR-D?

Obama 09-12 - OfficialJoe, on 11/23/2008, -3/+18Do note what he is spending it on - education (which brings long term economic growth), roads (which enables trade) and renewable energy (which brings down production costs normally dependent on oil, creates a new economic platform and ensures both short and longer term gains). The fact is that economy has just as much to do with economic flow as with cash reserves - if there is flow (presuming influx, economic cycling and outflow) then America will very soon see an upswing in its economic state and avoid depression.
If Obama was playing SimCity he would be making debts that will provide him with a highly profitable country in about 15 years time whilst at the same rate enabling 2.5 million Americans to work within the next 2 years. I'd say it is a much better strategy than pointing to a country far away, accusing them of being sadistic pirates and then waging war to increase internal spending at the cost of the nation and its global standing. - Spuy767, on 11/23/2008, -3/+18Economists generally agree that FDR's spending projects did little to get us out of the depression and perhaps even extended its life for several years. It was the industrial mobilization of WWII that truly got america out of the depression.
- Peabdog, on 11/23/2008, -8/+22You go, New FDR! You can prolong the economic crisis, just like Old FDR did! Change you can believe in.

Two UCLA economists say they have figured out why the Great Depression dragged on for almost 15 years, and they blame a suspect previously thought to be beyond reproach: President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
After scrutinizing Roosevelt's record for four years, Harold L. Cole and Lee E. Ohanian conclude in a new study that New Deal policies signed into law 71 years ago thwarted economic recovery for seven long years.
"Why the Great Depression lasted so long has always been a great mystery, and because we never really knew the reason, we have always worried whether we would have another 10- to 15-year economic slump," said Ohanian, vice chair of UCLA's Department of Economics. "We found that a relapse isn't likely unless lawmakers gum up a recovery with ill-conceived stimulus policies." - bodegit, on 11/23/2008, -7/+21I went to change.gov and told him to build this:

- Phernoree, on 11/23/2008, -10/+20New Deal 2.0. The only way to resolve the financial crisis is to curb gov't spending. I don't think anybody can dispute this. Also, this doesn't take in to account the service sector which accounts for 40 percent of American businesses, most of who will lose their jobs. The millions of new jobs here will be given to people who already have quality manufacturing jobs already demanded of them.
- jargonaut, on 11/23/2008, -2/+12You are right. There's no historical evidence that a war ever helped a country economically. Every war (especially since the Civil War in the US) has led to further government control over our lives and a deterioration of our freedoms.
