- stephhicks68, on 05/03/2009, -0/+5I used to be a member of Bag Borrow or Steal. It was fun to carry nice handbags, but not in today's economy.
- Insanekingkong, on 05/04/2009, -1/+5Here, i think you dropped these: , ,
- inactive, on 05/03/2009, -0/+3it's very common in the UK for men to rent black tie, white tie and morning dress if they need it and don't own it.
- emjaymj, on 05/04/2009, -0/+3if he did indeed release such a song, he ripped it off from The New Seekers who had a song with the exact name 7 years BEFORE HE WAS BORN. That's kind of obnoxious.
Get real, it's called an allusion (and trust me, it's not an allusion to Mr. Doherty.) There's nothing obnoxious about it. - pradaaddict, on 05/04/2009, -0/+3Bad idea for clothes but it may work for accessories. Most well made clothes conform to the wearers body after a few wears, some clothes cannot be cleaned or cleaned too often. I think things like suits and fine knits should NEVER be worn by more than one person.
- uselessexpert, on 05/04/2009, -0/+3In cities like NYC, Miami, LA, etc... where pretentious is everything, Bag Barrow or Steal definitely works...
- Chompy, on 05/04/2009, -2/+5See also; guys who rent rims for their cars.
- kalleanka, on 05/04/2009, -1/+4or the way they think
- jeddyftb, on 05/04/2009, -0/+2I don't
- stupidfilters, on 05/04/2009, -0/+2Herpes
- Laminarcissus, on 05/04/2009, -0/+2I don't even want to read about renting fashion.
- scottsutherland, on 05/04/2009, -0/+2Dugg for Pink Floyd reference.
- emjaymj, on 05/04/2009, -0/+2Just glancing at the site, there is no "typical" fee. The value of the bags fall into a very wide range and it really depends on the value. And even then, I've seen it fall between 2% and 10% of the value to rent it for a week.
If you're really too lazy to just take a peek at the site yourself, I'll give you a range:
Cheapest bag: $7.00/week ($225 value)
Median bag: $26/week ($695 value)
Most expensive bag: $1,632/week ($42,000 value)
So you can see why it's useless to talk about a "typical" price. It all depends on what you want. - rentdn, on 06/21/2009, -0/+2Bag Borrow or Steal or simply buy , I've made investment in fashion related theme http://www.designerhandbagspro.com/ - hope it'll pay out
- shodanx, on 05/04/2009, -0/+2no it's not
you will pay 3 to 4 percent of the value of the bag per week
which is an awful lot !!! you will pay the full price in 4 to 6 months rental !
also, 225$ , for a bag ? that's already insanely expensive !!!
why would a bag of cloth cost 225 $$ !! - whiledo, on 05/04/2009, -0/+1In the US, renting tuxedos for events like weddings is pretty much the standard.
- inactive, on 05/04/2009, -0/+1I think tuxedos is the same as black tie here - dinner jacket, matching trousers with satin stripes down the side, dress shirt, bow-tie, cummerbund? For things such as balls and posh evening dinners. Most men I know own black tie, and rent the others for the occasions it's needed.
Do you also rent white tie and morning dress if you need to wear it?
My Dad reckons there are 3 ages of dinner jackets. The first when you are a university etc, and it used to belong to an uncle / grandfather etc, so it doesn't fit very well. The second you buy when junior at work, and it has flashy lapels or fancy-cut trousers. Then the third, which you buy when your waist outgrows the fancy one, and it's much more sober. - stoopie, on 05/04/2009, -0/+1they're only successful because of the sex in the city movie plug
- brycesumm, on 05/04/2009, -0/+1Interesting concept, perhaps difficult to market but if the concept can take off it will work wonders. I certainly see it working best with accessories (handbags etc) and jewellary, the less personal sort of things.
Could definitely make an impact in the current economic climate, with a shortage of money but no shortage of wants and habits. - badot, on 10/09/2009, -0/+1nice idea for online shopping

http://kangbadot.com - katers4, on 05/04/2009, -0/+1I've always been curious about the service, but assumed it was too costly for me to handle... I've always wondered - what's a typical rental fee like for a bag there?
- mac888, on 05/04/2009, -0/+1sloppy seconds on a hand bag?
- kungfool101, on 05/04/2009, -0/+1Um...
- whiledo, on 05/04/2009, -0/+1If you look at the picture of your morning dress and the one I linked, you'll see the differences. Notice the lack of tails and the overall more "fitted" look in my link. It's more of a dressier version of the business suit.
I am so glad I'm not your other half! Can't imagine wearing this stuff six times a year. Granted, if you got a tailored ("bespoke" in the Queen's English) suite, it would be different. But I'm a muscular guy and my neck is always way too big for for the typical collars on my shirt/jacket size. I also tend to get warm rather quickly.
Tangentially, did you zoom in on the picture you linked to? The guy's right hand looks like something from a zombie movie... - inactive, on 05/04/2009, -0/+1I guess my other half wears black tie maybe 6 times a year? Something like that. And this weekend he had to wear morning dress this weekend, for a mate's wedding, but he doesn't often.
My parents are having a 35th wedding anniversary bash later in the year, and that will be black tie. Formal evening invitations always say - black tie, white tie, "informal" (meaning a normal suit) - inactive, on 05/04/2009, -0/+1http://www.i-do.uk.com/Main/FormalEtiquette.aspx
- jaminunit, on 05/08/2009, -0/+1My girlfriend uses swapstyle.com where women swap clothes.
- whiledo, on 05/04/2009, -0/+1In America, tuxedo refers to black tie, white tie, morning dress, etc. It's more of a generic term here.
Most men I know definitely don't own any sort of tuxedo. But most men I know are in the lower to upper-middle class in their 30s-40s. I do know one multi-millionaire, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't own a tuxedo, either. There's just not much call for it, here.
As far as white tie or morning dress - it's just not done save for those with far more money than the circles I run in.
Except for those groups, the USA has really become much less of a dress-up society. I've only worn black tie twice in my life - at a high school prom (a school ball mostly for 16-17 year olds in their last couple of years of primary education) and as a groomsman for a friend's wedding. I'll soon be wearing a tuxedo for my wedding, but it won't be black tie. It's closer to this, only with silver instead of the red:

Probably closer to morning dress, but still slightly toned down and edited. - n0reen, on 05/04/2009, -0/+1I think it's a great concept. Bag Borrow or Steal has been around for quite sometime now and is quite successful if I'm not mistaken.
- whiledo, on 05/05/2009, -0/+1Ah, the legal profession, eh? Then yes, you probably do travel in a bit of a different circle than I do. ;)
- katers4, on 05/05/2009, -0/+1I kept getting an error message that I said needed to be a member to view the fees and yeah I was too lazy to sign up :) Thanks for the reply nonetheless; have a GREAT day
- inactive, on 05/04/2009, -0/+1My other half has to wear a 3 piece suit for work (jacket, trousers, waistcoat) with separate collar and collar studs, and cuff-links, so black tie is the least of his worries (-:
Oh, and we both have to wear woollen gowns and horse-hair wigs some of the time at work as well. - HauteWeekly, on 05/04/2009, -0/+0I've loved utilizing the service over the last year. I'm pretty sure they were successful before the plug on SATC. It's great to borrow a bag for a nice event rather than buy.
There are places you can rent evening dresses much like men rent tuxedos too. Great recession ideas. - bigsquat, on 06/22/2009, -0/+0For a much better deal, with no membership fees or shipping fees, try an up and coming site like borrowmyhandbag.com. Smaller selection but much less expensive. They have a video from a talk show here. Digg it and see.
- undervalued, on 05/05/2009, -0/+0Actually I think it is possible most of the economy will end up service based, with products given away, but the service to use them effectively costing money.
- legsmccoy, on 05/04/2009, -1/+0hmm... i wouldn't do it, but it's an interesting idea.
- kidgentry, on 05/04/2009, -3/+0So they ripped off Pete Doherty's Beg, Steal or Borrow huh...
thats kind of obnoxious
