- Shiner76, on 01/08/2009, -1/+47I like the 4th comment down on the article, "If your neighbor is out of a job, then we’re in a recession. if you’re out a job, then we’re in a depression."
- infamousjr, on 01/08/2009, -1/+41That's what three of my friends thought until they were laid off earlier this week. Oh well, it will never happen to me.
- ThsGuyRightHere, on 01/08/2009, -0/+26Most companies by now have gone through several rounds of layoffs. Anyone who survives multiple rounds of layoffs is clearly a valuable employee to their company, otherwise they would have gone already. The problem is, by round #3 of layoffs you're not getting rid of dead weight; you're getting rid of good people who you simply can't afford to keep on any more.
- JustJoe4Life, on 01/08/2009, -1/+16They just can't survey the unemployed people, they've all had their phones cut off.
- lestyoubejudged, on 01/08/2009, -1/+15I am in high tech and it is bad here. Retail seems to be taking a really hard hit too. This is not nearly as 'contained' as you think. And it will get much worse, just wait.
- rvandy, on 01/08/2009, -2/+16Some suggestions for those recently laid off:
1. Nurse. Being a nurse ***** sucks balls, but it pays well, and there is a shortage of nurses right now.
2. Teacher. Those who can't do, teach.
3. Drug dealer. All these newly laid off people need something to comfort them. Why not the sweet embrace of your primo Afghan smack? - shadedecho, on 01/08/2009, -0/+14label me "other people"... i got laid off on tuesday... along with 1/3 of my company.
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -5/+18That graph ***** sucks.
Visually: It looks like we all on the streets by now no one has jobs.
Statistically: Jobs are down 1.71 %
Buried as inaccurate. - shaka999, on 01/08/2009, -0/+12Yeah, the other problem is that by the time you get to round #3 you have overly experienced people doing grunt work because you've laid off the "grunts".
- shaka999, on 01/08/2009, -2/+14Well most of the people that think they won't be laid off are right so whats the big deal? Its not that it can't happen to you but that its unlikely to happen to you.
- tibbon, on 01/08/2009, -0/+12I got layed off today! Job search starts... umm, now!
- Totz83, on 01/08/2009, -0/+12Sounds like the opening line of a tragic country song
- djshults, on 01/08/2009, -0/+10Yep, a huge financial corp brought 50 people into a meeting yesterday and then laid them all off. I hear these stories second hand but tend not to worry about my position. While losing my job would be tough, I have worked as a freelance designer/webbie and I think I have enough connections to weather the storm until something else surfaced. Knock on wood, though. ;)
- Treshnell, on 01/08/2009, -1/+11My aunt got a phone call on her birthday, the day after Christmas "Don't bother coming in on Monday."
- FenianNProud, on 01/08/2009, -0/+10You've clearly never worked for IBM, GE, etc. I've been amazed to see the clueless wretches that survive layoffs only due to the proximity of their lips to a senior-execs ass.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 01/08/2009, -0/+10Did you work for 1Up?
- Nauree, on 01/08/2009, -0/+8That will indirectly force all the illegals out the country. This is a good idea.
- fiji5555, on 01/08/2009, -0/+8Haha no one is immune to this so suck it up
- FXNGLAS, on 01/08/2009, -0/+8I'm one of those people who won't lose their job. Unemployment is the best job ever!
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -0/+8The longer you survive the harder it becomes to find a new job once the axe falls.
Round 1 - Get rid of all the trouble makers and malcontents
Round 2 - Cast off the bottom 10% on performance
Round 3 - Mid-career people. Not cheap labor like the noob, not part of the club like the senior workers. - eastwood24, on 01/08/2009, -2/+10Never underestimate the power of cognitive dissonance.
- bieber, on 01/08/2009, -0/+8Wow, there's a classic example of a misleading graph. They cut out most of the scale, so the change looks huge, when it really isn't at all...
- haydesigner, on 01/09/2009, -0/+8Two more words for you: Clueless CEO who raped (and hugely diminished) the Disney Brand solely in the name of quarterly profits.
Okay, that is more than two words, but most of us will admit the Disney name means much less to us than it did 15 years ago, thanks to that asshat. - NJank, on 01/08/2009, -0/+8caveats:
Nurse: requires at least 2 year specialized training.
Teacher: certificate/degree required. unions many places make it so you need a 4 year degree. - Totz83, on 01/08/2009, -0/+7Dell laid off 1900 in Ireland today. Ouch
- sadisticmind, on 01/08/2009, -0/+7just wait
- pappyblueribs, on 01/08/2009, -0/+7Are you being sarcastic, or do you really think ignoring a problem will make it go away?
- lestyoubejudged, on 01/08/2009, -0/+7Your company is doing better than mine. Already laid off 20%, no raises and no bonuses this year at all.
- kitsua, on 01/08/2009, -0/+6Which reminds me of Mel Brook's distinction between Comedy and Tragedy:
"Comedy is when a man falls down an open manhole and dies.
Tragedy is when I cut my finger". - casbar, on 01/08/2009, -1/+7I got laid off in '06. I didn't worry about it until 6 months later when the unemployment ran out.
- pavvy, on 01/09/2009, -0/+6GEORGE: Well, it doesn't even have to be the general manager. Maybe I could
be like, an announcer. Like a caller man. You know how I always make
those interesting comments during the game.
JERRY: Yeah. Yeah. You make good comments.
GEORGE: What about that?
JERRY: Well, they tend to give those jobs to ex-ballplayers and people that
are, you know, in broadcasting.
GEORGE: Well, that's really not fair.
JERRY: I know. Well, okay. Okay. What else do ya like?
GEORGE: Movies. I like to watch movies.
JERRY: Yeah. Yeah.
GEORGE: Do they pay people to watch movies?
JERRY: Projectionists.
GEORGE: That's true.
JERRY: But you gotta know how to work the projector.
GEORGE: Right.
JERRY: And it's probably a union thing.
GEORGE: [scoffs] Those unions. [sighs] Okay. Sports,...movies. What about a
talk show host?
JERRY: Talk show host. That's good.
GEORGE: I think I'd be good at that. I talk to people all the time. Someone
even told me once they thought I'd be a good talk show host.
JERRY: Really?
GEORGE: Yeah. A couple of people. I don't get that, though. Where do you
start?
JERRY: Well, that's where it gets tricky.
GEORGE: You can't just walk into a building and say " I wanna be a talk
show host."
JERRY: I wouldn't think so.
GEORGE: It's all politics. - Nauree, on 01/08/2009, -0/+6People need to reduce their living standards to a cardboard box. That way no one will have to do anything. I certainly do not feel like doing anything all the time.
- N1tro, on 01/08/2009, -0/+6The worst is not getting a career type out of college due to so many entry level jobs being filled by more qualified displaced workers. Jobs are still easy to get careers are a bitch.
- sadisticmind, on 01/08/2009, -0/+6and your on digg...dont look for that job too hard now
(just giving you *****, best of luck to you.) - Treshnell, on 01/08/2009, -0/+6If the freelance thing doesn't work out, "knocking on 'wood'" could indeed be another option...
- Nauree, on 01/08/2009, -1/+6This is win.
- Locke23, on 01/08/2009, -1/+6The thing about being an optimistic about the future, is that if 4 out of every 5 workers are not concerned about being laid off and more than that 20% of workers are to be laid off, the optimistic bunch will face an emotional downfall possibly linking them to depression. The case I make does not solely apply to laid off workers, but any overly-optimistic fellow in today's time.
It's not wrong to be optimistic, but one must be a realist as well. - TurnipFarm, on 01/08/2009, -2/+7This article is stupid, if 4 out of 5 people are concerned about layoffs that suggests that 20% of the workforce would not be suprised by being let go. That is a huge number and is probably accurate, anything more would be cataclysmic and irrational. ***** that graph too.
- kidrichgt, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5Financials and industrials went first..why, they're traditionally leading indicators....because they require private financing
Healthcare, Tech(intel warned on profits again), retail and the rest are lagging indicators because they're based on personal cash.
This won't get better until the Alcoa's, GE's, UTC's and the rest stop laying off. Besides anyone who isn't in trouble is using it as an excuse to cut the canaries in the company. You know the people they've wanted to fire for 3-5 years but can't because its too expensive.. - lokee73, on 01/09/2009, -0/+5Hi, I'd like to introduce myself...I'm "other people."
My boss called me into the HR Directors office yesterday and the first words out of my mouth were, "Let me guess, I'm fired." - casbar, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5My company was dismantled and I was lucky to get most of my vacation time when they showed me the door.
- Gloony, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5Wow - I mean Wow. You *really* don't have a ***** clue do you?
- MattB123, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5Bummer for those other people...
- gametavern, on 01/08/2009, -1/+6meh, there's always a job to be done... not all $100,000+ though.
- Xviper78, on 01/09/2009, -0/+5No, it's an insult to educated people because they know it's misleading.
- sadisticmind, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5i can see how unemployment is arousing....
- Nauree, on 01/08/2009, -1/+6I will never get laid off from my minimum wage job!
- jsdratm, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5My company is laying off several hundred people this month and the rest of us have to wait an extra 3 months before our raises from last year kick in.
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4I got hosed in '07. Got 10 months severence, never did collect UE.
- d00by, on 01/10/2009, -0/+4Agree with Xviper. The uneducated still get to vote, and misleading stuff like this influences that vote.
