- cnot3, on 12/12/2008, -41/+596Good. These bailouts have to stop now, or our economy will never improve.
- badqat, on 12/12/2008, -29/+547UAW refuses to accept any cuts before 2011.
Hate to tell you, but by 2011, all of us will have to buy Toyota or Honda...because with your "sacrifice", your employers will be out of business. - reaper527, on 12/12/2008, -22/+337this is great news that the bill died. maybe now the companies will REALLY restructure and fix the problems, instead of living off tax money until its time for another cash injection.
thats amazing that the union refuses to accept paycuts. this is just further proof that they are 100% unreasonable and are a major source of the problem. - inactive, on 12/12/2008, -39/+326FUAW
Bring on bankruptcy and kiss their labor agreements adios. Stupid union *****. - curtisag, on 12/12/2008, -9/+243God the UAW is so retarded. All they have to agree to is the same pay as Toyota pays US workers. They deserve what's coming.
- inactive, on 12/12/2008, -25/+191But the UAW promised sacrifice, oh ya, thats right they said they would consider it...NOT!
- chrissku, on 12/12/2008, -13/+158Nice job UAW. I guess having no job at all is better then a pay cut? I'm confused.
- Alfonrock, on 12/12/2008, -42/+181Let them burn!! long live japanese cars!
- HunterKiller, on 12/12/2008, -15/+152Our economy needs checks and balances just as many other things. If the government sweeps in again with bailout money for these companies, these bigwigs would continue to believe that they can practice whatever business models they deem fit without feeling the consequence of poor strategy. The entities that are "too big to fail" will continue to exacerbate the situation that we are in, the smaller companies will continue to drop like flies, and we will keep going down that downward spiral just as we had in the past.
I say no to bailouts. - jimmysilvs, on 12/12/2008, -17/+133Disagree. I'm waiting on the student loan bailout of 2009.
- OasisR123, on 12/12/2008, -11/+118but.... who is going to receive all that free money now?
- AmusedToDeath, on 12/12/2008, -4/+102@honesttussey: In the specific case of the UAW, it has grown so powerful that it has completely stifled the US auto industry, I'm all for workers rights and better pay, but there have to be limits, and the big three can't take a ***** without asking the UAW for a square of toilet paper. The American auto industry is teetering on the brink of death because its workers are some of the most overpaid and unproductive workers in the world.
In order to compete in a world market, American businesses must be agile and adapt quickly. You can't do that when every minute decision must be first approved by a bloated and corrupt Union organization that doesn't seem to care if you go out of business, as long as they get what they want.
That's what's so bad about this union. - L0NER, on 12/12/2008, -5/+98BREAKING: Old companies
- inactive, on 12/12/2008, -13/+105No more bailouts, No more stimulus checks, No more wasted money on stupid wars.
No more senseless spending. - vsaint, on 12/12/2008, -32/+123United ***** Whiners
- username7410, on 12/12/2008, -22/+108Wow! A bunch of overpaid union workers cut of their nose to spite their face!
- jrhelgeson, on 12/12/2008, -8/+91Hey I am 100% for the American worker, and I have total sympathy for the position they are in, but I am 100% against the Unions. They have been bleeding the big 3 for YEARS, and it took a long time, but they finally killed the 'elephant'. They waged a war against BIG AUTO and now they complain when it finally fails? WTF!
In 2007, GM sold 9.37 Million Cars.
In 2007, Toyota also sold 9.37 Million Cars.
For 2007, Toyota showed a profit of 19 Billion dollars; while GM showed a loss of 34.1 Billion dollars.
GM Spends more on health care than it does on Steel! This is partially a cost of health care issue caused by lawyers and lawsuits, but it is primarily a Union arm-twisting of the auto makers to extract benefits the likes of which nobody else has. The auto makers have become health care companies that just happen to manufacture cars. All these legacy costs that unions keep forcing onto the automakers are what killed it.
The United States just so happens to have a healthy, vibrant auto industry. We have Honda plants, Toyota plants and dozens of other 'foreign' manufacturers. None of the plants are Union controlled, and none of them are in the state of Michigan. Yes, all the workers get decent wages, great health care benefits and everything else.
Simply put, the unions need to be broken up and gotten rid of. - spankaccount, on 12/12/2008, -16/+99I just don't understand why the Democrats are trying to push this down our throats. These car companies wont disappear if we don't bail them out. They will file for chapter 11 and be able to get out from under the union contracts that put them in this position.
- Walker2323, on 12/12/2008, -30/+111Is there anything as antiquated and self destructive as unions? I mean, besides religion...
- inactive, on 12/12/2008, -13/+81Once again the U.S. government punks the American people. Can't you tools ever see the game being played on you? They pulled this same ***** with the Wall Street bailout. First, the Senate rejects the bailout plan to appease the anger of the American people. Then they resurrect the bailout plan with a few slight compromises...and then...the Senate passes it. Thus, the corporate masters are served.
It's all theatre, folks. Watch and see...the greedy whores of the U.S. auto industry will get their loot, sooner or later. Watch and see... - AriKant, on 12/12/2008, -8/+75***** the UAW. All they've done is leech the life out of the car companies and hurt the long-run prosperity of the auto workers. Bunch of corrupt, power-hungry, *****.
- majorrick, on 12/12/2008, -35/+102700 billion to the mystical financial market? not a problem.
not even 15 billion to the car industry? oooooh, no! the buck stops here! no more bailouts! government money is bad!
the 700 billion is a what.. cash infusion? the 15 billion was a damn _loan_. you'd see that money back, unlike a damn good majority of that 700 billion, i assure you.
i can't believe the hypocrisy you guys and the senate share sometimes. - curtisag, on 12/12/2008, -13/+80I hope the UAW eats ***** and dies a slow and painful death. Their greedy unwillingness to compromise and accept the same pay Toyota offers will be their downfall.
- alais, on 12/12/2008, -4/+68I'd say let them burn until they make better American cars but yeah...
- ryanonfire, on 12/12/2008, -1/+64meth.
- scarz99, on 12/12/2008, -7/+67Dugg for *****. Plus I totally agree with you.
- stubarwick, on 12/12/2008, -10/+70Any bets on what happens to the stock market tomorrow morning? Suddenly super realistic chance of 10-12% unemployment won't be good to the markets and it will be even worse for the country (mid-west especially)
- shnizep, on 12/12/2008, -9/+68I wrote my senator but I knew he would vote this down anyways :)
- inactive, on 12/12/2008, -14/+72***** that, I paid my loans off by working. I expect the rest of you do to do the same.
- sirbeta, on 12/12/2008, -2/+52Heaven forbid people actually write their senators for anything more than 5th grade class credit.
- IpwnZnoobs, on 12/12/2008, -11/+60Take the hint.. your cars suck.
- curtisag, on 12/12/2008, -1/+48Bankruptcy does not mean they disappear. It means they can renegotiate labor contracts and wipe away their debts. It's salvation, not damnation.
- jimmysilvs, on 12/12/2008, -7/+52If you want a decent car today, you'd get a Toyota or Honda (or maybe a Mazda). You don't have to wait 3 years for American cars to not be an option.
- WNW3, on 12/12/2008, -3/+46As an owner of a Mazda...don't get a Mazda
- Jeepinator, on 12/12/2008, -12/+55New meme: ***** the UAW!
- PWNE, on 12/12/2008, -1/+42Wall Street next year
- jpezzznuts, on 12/12/2008, -9/+50"BREAKING" really doesn't work as well on Digg - not your fault - its been the number one Google news item for several hours and by the time something like this hits the Front Page its far past broke.
- peestandingup, on 12/12/2008, -1/+40Dont forget our German friends. They're no slouch.
- sdwilly, on 12/12/2008, -2/+41But you'd buy from a car company that is saying if it doesn't get cash it can't operate past the end of this year? I really fail to see the difference.
- acknotSW, on 12/12/2008, -0/+38UAW = Corrupt + Outdated + Redundant
They have people whose only job is to sweep the floors making $20+ an hour. Unions turn entry level positions that should pay minimum wage into life long career positions.
American companies and workers need to learn that the party is over. From the top level executives who spend and write off $2000 lunches for 8 people down to the guy making $20+ an hour with the same skill set that a chimpanzee could master in a week, THE PARTY IS ***** OVER! - latin69, on 12/12/2008, -9/+46Good old capitalism! Survival of the fittest.
- Stoneman89, on 12/12/2008, -9/+46I cant say if this is good or not but lots of jobs will be cut and the small businesses that buy parts from these companies will go down too. I was totally against bailing out the banks but i'm not sure if this is a good thing
- curtisag, on 12/12/2008, -7/+42Honesttussey:
I will try to explain how unions are a flawed system. Unions demand higher pay, which increases the cost of production. In a closed system, absent globalization, this only leads to an general rise in the price of goods and services. But in a globalized economy with free trade, where other countries do not have unions, our industries are at a significant disadvantage. Unions were initially created to protect workers from unfair exploitation only to become the chains that drown companies in a globally competitive economy. I'm sure others could explain it better, but that's my best attempt in a short time. - rootsm3, on 12/12/2008, -14/+48Sorry Bawny Fwank.
Reap what you sow Big 3!! - inactive, on 12/12/2008, -26/+60UAW needs to get their heads out of their asses and make some compromises if they want to get anything useful done.
And while I have mixed feelings on this bailout, I really don't think many people understand just how big the consequences are of the big 3 going under. Millions of people WILL be out of a job, and this will devastate the entire mid-west for years. - inactive, on 12/12/2008, -4/+37"Is there anything as antiquated and self destructive as unions? I mean, besides religion..."
Unions are not necessarily a bad thing, in fact do you work 8 hour days? get paid at least minimum wage? work in safe hazard free enviorments? You can thank the Unions for that. It's the corrupt people who run these organizations that are at fault like any organizations, religion included. I think the monster that the UAW has become today is a complete travesty and if their selfish act of greed hindered from this process to go forward then it is completely them to blame, personally I don't think any of the big 3 should get a handout but that is just my opinion - doublefelix, on 12/12/2008, -7/+40I agree this is shortsighted of the UAW. However, it is also hypocritical of a congress that will more than likely vote itself another pay increase in the near future.
- curtisag, on 12/12/2008, -13/+46WRONG!
Bankruptcy does not mean the end to GM or Chrysler. It may be a new beginning, like the bankruptcy of the airlines was a new beginning for them. They must restructure their companies to be competitive, and the UAW has made it clear they are not willing to do what's necessary to be competitive. - radu79, on 12/12/2008, -4/+36I am glad they refused their paycut, because I really didn't want my tax money to go to the big 3.
I work hard for my money, and if I make poor decisions, I do not expect soeone else to bail me out.
So why should they be bailed out then? They made mistakes, let them pay! - BransonLAN, on 12/12/2008, -12/+44Got to love the unions.
