- lalandica, on 11/14/2009, -4/+27I'd have to say that men and women are competitive in different ways. Men show better sportsmanship; Women are cut-throat bitches who will stop all over anyone in their path without second thought when they really want something.
- ohplease, on 11/14/2009, -2/+25In my personal experience, for the most part men are more competitive in teams than women. At the risk of sounding mysogenistic, in many corporate environments, women are more involved with office gossip and competing with each other at the work place while more men are "company men", more concerned about competing with the company's business competitors.
I don't really care who's sleeping with who at work, I mainly care about how our company is performing. A greater ratio of women I've worked with over the years don't seem to have that focus, and seem to be more interested in turning the workplace into a high school popularity contest. I've had the chance to work with some amazing talented women, but unfortunately they've been the minority. - pimpofpixels, on 11/14/2009, -1/+20Guys are competitive as all hell, and seem to enjoy direct competition more, but, in my experience, girls tend to be more competitive socially.
- Cowzeetgrass, on 11/14/2009, -2/+18I'm going to have to give this one to the women. I don't care if my shoes match my outfit, I just want the ground to not hurt my feet.
- Skwual, on 11/14/2009, -3/+12I read the title and said to myself "hell yes we are!"
- rocknog, on 11/14/2009, -0/+8Heck, you can trace this all the way back to elementary school boys and girls. It's a common misconception that boys are more aggressive than girls - the fact is, boys and girls can both be highly aggressive, it's just that boys tend to deal with it with their fists. Girls are aggressive, too, it's just that they use gossip and trash talk to hurt their targets. Personally, I think that form of aggression can actually be more brutal at times. I mean, once a fist fight is over, the matter's settled. Things are rarely settled by gossip and trash talk, and it can lead to girls being ostracized from the group because it's directly connected to the social hierarchy. And heck, the most aggressive boys are usually bullies who have no friends anyway, so even if you lose, it really doesn't affect your standings with anyone. And long term, it's much easier to recover from scrapes and bruises than it is to recover from the psychological scarring that being a social outcast can cause.
- TinternAbbot, on 11/14/2009, -1/+8in investment banking, men who work hard and are demanding are respected. women with the same traits in banking are called "bitches." Not a matter of competitiveness, just a matter of bias reinforcing itself.
Also, FTA: "(Subjects were paid for the number of balls they tossed into a basket, rather than doing arithmetic.) " That's hilarious. - cfuse, on 11/14/2009, -2/+9I've said this before, but women will gore each other to death over a man they hate, simply because they suspect the other one might want him.
- borez, on 11/14/2009, -2/+9It depends on the individual.
- inagoodcause, on 11/14/2009, -0/+7"It appears that the warriors are made, not born." I would go by this phrase. Whether men are more competitive or women depends on person to person. Men and women are competitive in their own ways.
- ohplease, on 11/14/2009, -3/+9I think this has more to do with established societal roles. Look at high school. Men join sports teams, or chess teams, or what have you, and compete with rival schools. High school girls trash on each other, spread lies about each other, and basically compete with each other over who can be the princess, who can get the most attention, etc.
I think this behavior is the same undercurrent you see in a lot of work places. I don't think I'd be hearing from Bill in Accounting a rumor about who has an STD or who might be gay when we're supposed to be reviewing the 4th quarter budget requirements for the IT department, but I over hear the girls talking about that kind of thing over lunch on a regular basis. Bill is more worried about the team, about our competitors and how we are faring against them, as am I. Just as when I played football in high school I was more concerned about how the other teams were doing against us, not who the kicker was dating.
As I said, this is my personal experience working for a myriad of large businesses, and not necessarily the law of the land. - czarcasm, on 11/14/2009, -1/+7Im the most uncompetitive person ever, That makes me the winner.
- Amadeus2490, on 11/14/2009, -5/+10Women are naturally jealous of each other. They're always competing, and they always need someone or something to complain about at all times, or they aren't happy. Women usually won't care about a guy until they see other women are interested in him. . .then they'll get jealous and try to win over the guy's affection just to piss the other girls off. An extreme example of this is Beatle Mania, when girls were screaming, crying and fainting over those guys when they became famous, even though they were just music geeks with bad haircuts like, five minutes before this happened.
- RupeThereItIs, on 11/14/2009, -0/+4"If your boss asks for loyalty, give him integrity. If he asks for integrity, give him loyalty." - Col John Boyd.
Some of the best advise I've ever heard.
As for wanting to work for a women: I find it very difficult at times to work for a women. Simply because I generally want to attack a problem head on & it seems my boss often wants to discuss the problem in great detail before making a single decision (no mater how simple the issue). To me this seems excessive & frustratingly painfully slow method of accomplishing anything, I suspect to her this is as natural as breathing. - hackiavelli, on 11/14/2009, -0/+3How about we just concentrate on teaching children period.
- electrosheep, on 11/14/2009, -4/+7Let the chauvinism begin.
- dcmcderm, on 11/14/2009, -0/+3My wife and I have a mutual understanding where she always lets me win at boardgames so I don't throw things and/or kick the dog for no reason. See, according to her, we play games "to have fun family time" (crazy) but for me the only thing that matters is sweet victory...
- electrosheep, on 11/15/2009, -0/+3They like to compete in the gym locker room.
- swamp916, on 11/15/2009, -0/+3guys try to compete about dick size all the time, why else would you get a lifted truck? i bet if guys could show dick cleavage in a sexy way every man would do it.
- bigtimslim, on 11/14/2009, -2/+5tldr article or comments
yes. - omae, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2/facepalm
why so serious? - j0phus, on 11/14/2009, -3/+5Oh my bad, then we are both saying the same thing: women utilize a different toolset to reach their goals? Where you may work hard for 2 years for a promotion and she may have spent that time building a relationship with your superior, but you both still reach your goal?
I'm so high. I'm just going to stop now. Sorry if I don't make any sense at all. - earther, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2do you live in a cave?
- kaosethema, on 11/15/2009, -0/+2humans compete
but when women compete like men, it gets ***** up. - eavesdrop, on 11/14/2009, -4/+6yeah because we show dick cleavage? Be serious.
- lobotomy42, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2Did anyone commenting actually read the article?
- jd75, on 11/15/2009, -0/+1col. john boyd is right -- that's awesome wisdom.
you are generalizing too much. my last three bosses have been men. 2/3 of them dragged their feet and got bogged down in idiotic details. i've also had several lady bosses, and i've never had a lady boss talk a good idea to death. - spookyturtle, on 11/15/2009, -0/+1Coming from a girls' perspective, the comments above seem to forget that the way the workplace is set up, for example, was geared -for- how men are socially trained to compete, and the methods used therein. Realize also that there are two very concrete scripts in how each sex is expected to behave when it comes to competing. The way each competes not only relates to how they might innately act, but also how they -should- act to be perceived of their sex.
- joculator, on 11/14/2009, -2/+3Competitiveness aside, in the corporate environment, women don't seem to have this pathological desire to demand loyalty from people under them on the org-chart. I know I'm being sexist, but I'd much rather work for a woman in the corporate world.
- borez, on 11/14/2009, -1/+2At least you'll be first there.
- maccagrabme, on 11/14/2009, -3/+4I don't know why anyone bothers as it gets you nowhere fast apart from an early grave.
- earther, on 11/14/2009, -1/+2when women compete, they wind up hating each other. when men compete, they usually wind up bonding.
- bemenaker, on 11/14/2009, -1/+2Men and women are competitive in different ways. I think women are more competitive than men honestly, just not in the same manner.
- maccagrabme, on 11/15/2009, -0/+1Maybe
- kinerry, on 11/14/2009, -1/+2moar?
- Amadeus2490, on 11/14/2009, -0/+1Well, it's true.
- ZombieSociety, on 11/14/2009, -0/+1Buried for "nuff said."
- jd75, on 11/15/2009, -0/+1haha. no. slate is not always full of crap, but it is often enough that i'm not going to risk it. the description was quality and to-the-point.

- electrosheep, on 11/14/2009, -3/+4Guys do that with the penises as well.
- joculator, on 11/14/2009, -1/+2Were I've been, a lot of "old boy's networks" tend to develop...then after a few years they tend to get break up and the next head-scumbag comes along, but not before ruining the environment for all of the good people.
- PatrickX, on 11/19/2009, -0/+1Well the men you describe are commonly referred to as "douches"
- eavesdrop, on 11/15/2009, -1/+1LOL......I dugg you ladies up.
- ByteMeAHole, on 11/15/2009, -1/+1The simple fact is that men and women are competitive about different things, for different reasons. Men tend to compete when it comes to money and power - for the simple reason that tends to provide them with access to more women. Women on the other hand, compete with other women for men who have money and power.
It may not be politically correct to say that, but that doesn't make it any less true. - paulyoung1980, on 11/14/2009, -1/+1You really think that women are more worried about ego than men? Your deluded. Why is the top tier of the corporate world dominated by men? Why is the political system dominated by men? Because women don't have the kind of cut throat ego necessary to make it there?
Why was nearly every war in the history of our planet started by men? Are these examples of the healthy bonding that occurs when men try to defend their position?
And if women are so insecure, and men by contrast so secure, then why are male suicide rates 3 to 4 times that of women? - vaderson, on 11/18/2009, -0/+0I'll bet you I'm not competitive.
- gustasonfrever, on 11/14/2009, -2/+2lol "glad to be a men"
Read that out loud and you'll realize how ridiculous it sounds. - thandermax, on 11/15/2009, -0/+0Read this ... http://digg.com/d319ysU
- jd75, on 11/15/2009, -1/+1the men i know compete most frequently for elf gold. this in no way gets them laid more frequently.
being politically incorrect doesn't make things more true, either. - monvalley, on 11/22/2009, -0/+0I live in a man cave and enjoy being supported by a woman
