- skipdog172, on 06/23/2009, -0/+49buried for the horrible "click to drag picture" crap. i dont know what it is but its unusable.
- inactive, on 06/23/2009, -1/+31I guess Wired is trying a new tactic to get people to buy their magazines by making their graphics unreadable.
- asgardshill, on 06/23/2009, -3/+29Buried for 2-point agate type on the illustration. Impossible to read, interface is crap.
- floppytoes, on 06/22/2009, -0/+24I'm too old for all these fancy graphics. Here's an old school link to a NPR Planet Monday article discussing the same thing (the economic model): http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?story ...
- dizmoz, on 06/23/2009, -0/+21I don't think there is enough comments here for how bad the interface is... so I will leave another one.
- RumpleForeskin3, on 06/23/2009, -0/+15You know your interface is bad when a bunch of Digg nerds can't even use it!
- Ninh, on 06/23/2009, -0/+14I was quite confident beforehand that they are not running a non-profit organization.
- anotherghost, on 06/23/2009, -1/+14This is awesome, but the interface is ***** terrible
- eq2s, on 06/23/2009, -0/+13The developers forgot that web browsers have scroll bars.
- speedyrev, on 06/23/2009, -1/+13.The secret of eternal life may have been in there somewhere, but the UI is crap and I'm not reading it.
- inactive, on 06/23/2009, -0/+12HOLY CRAP what a ***** graphic
- adit, on 06/23/2009, -1/+12Somalian Pirates We!
- LeeMaple, on 06/23/2009, -0/+11That GUI is great. For me to poop on..
- schwab002, on 06/23/2009, -0/+10I agree that it is horrible, but it's not google maps style "click and drag" like I was expecting.
It's "click to drag viewing area around" After finally understanding this, I'm still having issues; the bottom seems to be cut off once you zoom in. Also, there doesn't seem to be an unzoom button. - jakereilly, on 06/23/2009, -0/+10I think the Pirates stole the real GUI. GET THEM!
- kimbja98, on 06/23/2009, -0/+9Why does it use flash!? I can't see why this is more useful or more efficient than an svg or jpg/png! I thought such antics were limited to places like scribd (rather than pdf...a perfectly good, open document exchange format).
- k1n6, on 06/23/2009, -0/+9Yea that UI is annoying, in part because it seems to not function as intended at times, but also because I'm used to the way you drag PDF's around, where as that is a different interaction paradigm. (dragging left to pan left and visa versa)
- jonmlm, on 06/23/2009, -0/+8oh good.. thought the UI problem was just me.
- stuwanker, on 06/23/2009, -0/+8And I will spend the rest of my day digging up the comments dishing on the UI.
Seriously, I ***** hate it. - omgwtflawl, on 06/23/2009, -0/+8I could go on about how bad the interface is. So I will. God it's crap, what the hell were they thinking?
- Solkre, on 06/23/2009, -0/+8If you want this graphics with an actually usable interface, air drop 10 million dollars, at a location i will disclose later.
- krekc, on 06/23/2009, -2/+10My business model to stopping pirates. Kill them.
- liljay2k, on 06/23/2009, -0/+7Buried, come back when you can create a jpeg.
- mikewire, on 06/23/2009, -1/+8Professor...whats another word for pirate treasure???? BOOTY!!!
Buried - UI is horrible. What's the point of this? - realmadrid2727, on 06/23/2009, -0/+7I understand the UI, but I'd rather walk the plank than use it.
- homercles337, on 06/23/2009, -0/+6This is the reason that flash should be completely removed from the web. For ever...
- lnxfi, on 06/23/2009, -0/+5Every time I tried to click or move the image, I was at risk of a seizuuurrreeeegarble
- andyb747, on 06/23/2009, -0/+5[comment about ***** graphic and the terrible interface]
- gfail, on 06/23/2009, -0/+5Coming from a country ravaged by poverty starvation and war, becoming a pirate is probably like joining the cast of the love boat.
- Rothbardosaurus, on 06/23/2009, -0/+4The pirates are not capitalists. They are thieves. If they wore fancy hats, they would be a government.
Can't they just link a PDF? What an awful interface. - Grolsch, on 06/23/2009, -0/+41.Attack ships
2. ???
3. Profit - skotski, on 06/23/2009, -0/+3It was much better (easier to read) in the actual magazine this month.
- Rothbardosaurus, on 06/23/2009, -0/+3Fishermen don't try to board merchant ships.
- alexforcefive, on 06/23/2009, -1/+4Well since you put it that way, I'm now in favour of piracy! We should let the market work, right? Right?
- dlan4327, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2I had an inkling the start up capital would be high but that npr article estimates it at $250 000.
That is incredibly high. Considering after the money is split it says the start up investor stands to make $500 000.
I mean for something so high risk if I was putting in $250 000 I'd want millions in return. The risk is too great. - HBZ55, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2Al Jazeera English is doing a series of reports about piracy, I found them pretty informative. Gives you an idea about what caused the problem and how ordinary Somalis think of those pirates.
- alexforcefive, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2I could hazard a guess :p
- lnxfi, on 06/23/2009, -1/+3Why are there paragraph marks (the backwards P) in the bit of text there ... assuming you were able to navigate to it before you gave up.
? - lyonsban, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2"they were afraid of getting robbed by other pirates on their way back to shore, Gullestrup says, so he gave them a ride north, dropping them closer to home."
Gotta love those Danes. Here's your 2 million, have a nice day. Beer cold? Need a back rub? - emjaymj, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1Actually carpal tunnel syndrome is mostly determined by genetics and has little to do with repetitive work, other than being a novel way to cash in on worker's comp.
Also, reasons most people don't quit their job to sell weed to 16 year olds are:
a) You really, REALLY don't make that much money doing that. Even the busiest of high-school drug dealers can barely cover the cost of their own weed.
b) You risk going to jail. Yeah a 9-5 might suck, but you get to go to a comfortable home and relax for the other 16 hours if you want. And even being YOU in jail would still probably be better than living the life of a free and legitimately-living Somalian. - nyxerebos, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1I loathe PDF, every web project it touches seems to turn to crap. Flash isn't great either, but much preferable.
- FattyMagee, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1I suppose the information on here talking about how it just makes sense for the average Somali to take up this life style will appeal to the all knowing diggers. Since its technically safer and earn vast amounts more then a normal living.
So I suppose I should quit my job because chances of getting carpel tunnel syndrome are high and I could probly make a lot more money selling weed to 16 year olds and make a hell of alot more money and be relatively safe. - PowderedToasty, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1You might be surprised...
- emjaymj, on 06/23/2009, -1/+2That'd be like the pharmaceutical industry actually inventing cures... where's the profit in that?
- jaaames, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1F5.
- kaji823, on 06/23/2009, -2/+3I didnt even have to click the article to know I'd like this
- oldgal, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1thanks for providing this link - interesting read.
- Enlefo, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1I was really expecting to see that in the article... good to see I'm not the only one.
- cleantoe, on 06/23/2009, -1/+2Hello?
