- PaulOwen, on 11/01/2008, -0/+17Why doesn't American Express just consolidate their debts into one, easy, monthly repayment plan?
- duggdowncatisad, on 11/01/2008, -1/+16What's there to fix? The fundamentals of the economy are strong, my friends! ;)
- DreamVsPs2, on 11/01/2008, -0/+15Thank you for calling American Express, my name is John, how may I help you? /Apu
- superflydugg, on 11/01/2008, -3/+16How will McCain "fix" America's economy?
I want a real explanation, not just some "change" and "believe" *****. - YodaJones, on 11/01/2008, -0/+13Hmmmm. But will the management cut their bonuses?
- freefallgrue, on 11/01/2008, -1/+12Also, why the hell does a credit card company need that many employees anyway?
- jollybee34, on 11/01/2008, -5/+16sadly this will be american jobs. not outsourced indian tech supporters.
- peestandingup, on 11/01/2008, -1/+8Wait, people actually use American Express??
- fabkebab, on 11/01/2008, -0/+7I totally disagree-
If you think medical insurance companies are an example of the sort business that are driving our economy forward (as opposed to real jobs that create something of value) then you have been drinking the wrong cool aid.
Doing what the rest of the western world does is not some radical experiment - You could almost say that not having a national health plan is the "experiment" and I am going to say FAIL - Dumbledorito, on 11/01/2008, -0/+7I do hope Americans aren't expecting a quick fix. Just reversing a lot of the economic ***** of the past 8 years would help, but even if you did that and got the banks/hedge funds/etc. to actually value their assets as they should and stop repackaging and leveraging debt, this fire has got a long way to go before it's put out.
- Gemfinder, on 10/31/2008, -7/+13First the Post Office, now this.
The country's imploding, and all we can do is fret about who's a socialist and who isn't?!
Get a ***** life, Digg. - Soave, on 11/01/2008, -0/+5In my experience, they always pick rather bizarre, non-American names. I had "Samson" on HP tech support once.
- aaronfinity, on 11/01/2008, -0/+5When they say you are fired, just tell them NO. That always works, if you say it sternly and mean it.
- linagee, on 11/01/2008, -0/+5Not to mention all the B2B stuff they never tell you about.
- inactive, on 11/01/2008, -2/+7good, F*C@ the credit card companies. sick degenerates enticing me with their 0% rates.
- thetron, on 11/01/2008, -0/+5This is good. No more amercian express stalls at the local airport and shopping centre trying to get you signed up
- Carnivale, on 11/01/2008, -0/+5You mean some of us will have to start leaving home without it?
- freefallgrue, on 11/01/2008, -0/+5Oh jesus I'm retarded. I read it as American Airlines.
- psykiv, on 11/01/2008, -0/+5Technically they're not just a "credit card company". They're quite a bit more.
Credit Card
Charge Card
Gift Cards
Traveler's Cheques
Travel Agency (Which is where I bet most of their "employees" work. Just picture some Amex Travel franchise in Lithuania)
Foreign Currency Exchange
Amex Merchant Network
But yea, either way 70,000 employees does seem a bit excessive. - Olfster, on 11/01/2008, -0/+4I get a kick out of them giving a name you know is not their own. You have to have fun with them though. Get them off their script and ask how the weather is where they are. I actually had one hanging on for like 15 minutes one day as I was watching the news.
- crownedgriffin, on 11/01/2008, -2/+6If they cannot afford to keep people in these jobs, why not just charge their wages? Seems to work well for all their customers...
- inactive, on 11/01/2008, -0/+4Not true. Back in the early 80's, my prior employer cut all employee salaries by 10%. Employee moral plummeted. Peoples finances were devastated. Instead of having jettisoned some under-performers and incurred one time costs for severance you now had an entire company full of frustrated employees.
- sodade, on 11/01/2008, -0/+4Every single american earning USD wages has already taken a ***** huge paycut up the ass.
- inactive, on 11/01/2008, -0/+4Less credit? Good!
Less Amerikan idiot "consumers" buying insta-landfill crap from Wal-Mart they CAN'T AFFORD NOR NEED!
Good riddance! - Sabre24q7, on 11/01/2008, -2/+5I honestly think Obama , nor Mccain can fix the economy. We will suffer for awhile :(
- clickmyface, on 11/01/2008, -1/+4"Get a ***** life, Digg."
What was up with that yo? - FlaG8r, on 11/01/2008, -0/+3Magic Hand of the Market, you can start working anytime.
- doublefelix, on 11/01/2008, -0/+3I used this: http://www.*****.com/
The last time I went through this *****.
good times. - Olfster, on 11/01/2008, -0/+3Funny I went into my bank the other day, and the lady says "Sir, I have good news. Your pre-approved for our credit card!" I laughed and said "I have good news also. I have a business appointment so I don't have time to close my account and move it to the local community bank down the street." The large national (now nationalized) banks are asswipes and should have been let to fail.
- clickmyface, on 11/01/2008, -0/+2Eric: Alice, I just tried to fire Jim in accounting and...
Alice: What do you mean, "tried"?
E: He turned around, got up from his chair, stood up on his desk and shouted "No!", then went back to his conference call with state.
A: Well are you going to try again?
E: I don't know. This never came up in HR training.
A: Eric, you have to fire him. The economy, she is drowning. It's your job to save her.
E: Oh Alice, you always say the right thing. You make me feel like I'm not separated right now. - pault107, on 11/01/2008, -0/+2From their site:
"***** is... sorta *****."
Now, Digg irony experts - is that ironic? - stonebear, on 11/01/2008, -1/+3Seriously; nerds without lives is the reason digg exists at all.
- inactive, on 11/01/2008, -0/+2Would you care to elaborate on "create conditions that will help stimulate the economy" other than just to talk about drilling for oil and mining oil shale deposits? Finite resources that will last for a brief period and will take years to make it to our gas pumps? We keep handing the renewable energy problem to each generation, the old neocon "we'll let somebody else worry about it" mentality. If you really think these are the answers to fixing our economy and our energy problems, you are engaging in some magical thinking.
- inactive, on 11/01/2008, -0/+2***** Company stopped being relevant about 2002. Pud sucks, literally.
- form3hide, on 11/01/2008, -4/+6Relax. It's not imploding. The market is fixing itself. Things like this happen. We have to take the good with the bad, unfortunately. Just hang in there.
- Tenlow, on 11/01/2008, -2/+4He has explained it. Multiple times. You say "nah i don't want to hear it" and pretend it never happened.
- IllBeBack, on 11/01/2008, -0/+2Yes, all merit increases and bonuses for management positions have been suspended for 2009 at American Express.
Staff merit increases have not been suspended. - Akairenn, on 11/01/2008, -2/+4Because people are whiny bitches and won't take a paycut.
- anticlickwise, on 11/01/2008, -1/+3same story everywhere... i use this site http://www.trackthisnow.com/ to track job cuts across the world everyday
- robthom, on 11/01/2008, -0/+2Awesome!
- chandrab, on 11/01/2008, -0/+2Credit cards is the next downturn. The American consumer fearful and weaken by the stock market downturn, layoffs and foreclosures have been using credit cards as a floatation device. With the increasing delinquency in credit cards, the credit card issuers (banks) have been cancelling credit cards and reducing credit lines. My forecast is that this will cause more people to declare bankruptcy....but thanks to Bush and Credit Card lobbyists it's harder to discharge credit card debt under bankruptcy laws! So we are all screwed!
More information on f*cked companies laying off here:
http://www.f-ckedcompany.com - inactive, on 11/01/2008, -4/+6he wont. he urged them to pass the scam bailout too, he is part of the problem and is merely the controlled, israeli approved, opposition. obama isn't talking about how the US has been attacking syria and pakistan and isn't exposing the truth on our war for oil. he just repeats change change change over and over again. it's all psycholigical to make you associate his name with change. people have short memories and to make something stick in long term memory the govt must repeat it over and over and over again.
and over. - Olfster, on 11/01/2008, -0/+2Some of us have never left with it, and never will! I think this may be why they are cutting 7000 people.
- JLSN, on 11/01/2008, -0/+2Looks like Bush is a uniter not a divider after all. He has united the country for Obama. I do give some credit to Caribou Barbie though. She has done a terrific job.
- poordavey, on 11/01/2008, -0/+2 Does anyone know if this will affect Ameriprise as well?
- inactive, on 11/01/2008, -0/+2Screw the people who are out of job, we all know the survival of the capitalist company is much more important.
- ConfirmedCynic, on 11/01/2008, -0/+1I suspect that if companies like AmEx just cut pay across the board enough achieve the cost savings, with the promise of raising it again when times get better:
(1) morale in those companies would be far better
(2) the recession wouldn't be nearly so deep, as people could count on keeping their jobs
(3) productivity would be higher because they have more staff (and fewer stressed out staff) - motters, on 11/01/2008, -0/+1So long AmExp. China Express? ... that will do nicely
- EricAnderton, on 11/01/2008, -0/+1Wow, that site's still going strong. I remember watching the dot.com bubble deflate around me on that site.
- Olfster, on 11/01/2008, -1/+2Fired? Just say No! Head to the basement when they move your desk there. Don't forget your stapler.
