- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -0/+23He stopped going to AA long ago.
- protonone, on 05/22/2009, -1/+19Obviously since flight attendants have hit almost rock bottom in looks, he was just trying to drink them pretty and relive the glory days of the airlines.
- weister42, on 05/22/2009, -0/+13That AA pilot will need to attend AA.
- CB810, on 05/21/2009, -2/+13Not to worry, I stopped flying AA long ago...
- Polluted, on 05/22/2009, -1/+9I'm actually kind of amazed this doesn't happen more often.
- darcyp, on 05/22/2009, -0/+7I don't think the autopilot is as simple as the pilot walking into the cockpit and saying "Chicago please." I'd much prefer my pilots sober.
On your other note, you do know that mouthwash is mostly alcohol right? I don't think that will help your case much. - pinkcherry, on 05/22/2009, -0/+7I remember being on a AA flight years ago, the cabin was filled with an obnoxiously strong odor of Kerosene. I mentioned it to a stewardess, and she tried telling me it was probably someone using nail polish. Right... nail polish smells like jet fuel.
- ravage86, on 05/22/2009, -0/+6Takeoffs are mostly manual below the first 200 feet, really the only assistance they get is the to/ga switch. landings can be automated, depends on the aircraft, but it still requires configuring the aircraft manually.
- fury420, on 05/22/2009, -1/+7monino, way to completely misread merky1's position there, I've never seen two people who hold the same position argue against eachother
now... just because marijuana is legalized does not mean that there cannot be restrictions on its use, there are all kinds of drugs, both prescription & over the counter that pilots cannot use - Zekesterdude, on 05/22/2009, -1/+6I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often. You think with so many people's lives in their hands they would stay sober. I know that with autopilot being what it is these days pilots are barely needed, but still. All it takes is one mistake to kill a whole plane full of people, not the mention the children's hospital they'll inevitably land on.
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -0/+5Alcoholism among airline pilots is endemic.
- fury420, on 05/22/2009, -0/+5they would probably catch a whole lot more of these if using a breathalyzer was required before flying, instead of in this case it being up to airport security to suspect he is drunk and call the police
- FredSpeaking, on 05/22/2009, -0/+4Even with pot illegal, how is someone who is willing to fly drunk less willing to fly stoned? Access certainly isn't an obstacle.
- flangepiece, on 05/22/2009, -0/+4When Beer Goggles and Flying Goggles collide.
- Arkyll, on 07/16/2009, -2/+5LOL FAIL.
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3Sadly, its probably safer to fly drunk than drive.
- JohnnyDIGGme, on 05/22/2009, -1/+4I've seen many members of the flight crew that looked a little "off". Most were probably tired, but I'm willing to bet this guy isn't alone.
- Aeneasthrax, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3serious.... i'm flying AA from Heathrow to DFW on Monday.... I guess I'll be using my 100mL containers to smuggle me some booze. Awesome!
- brbeaird, on 05/21/2009, -1/+4How dumb can you be?
- vikblazin, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3lol to your other comment. i love it when people on digg say they're slightly tipsy or drunk. because they're slightly tipsy or drunk and still on digg. lmaooo
- grabadores, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3I'm flying AA to Heathrow in 4 days :(
- 4rp4n3t, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3So why not *reply* to the other comment?
- cshields, on 05/22/2009, -0/+3Tired is almost as bad as drunk... (colgan air crash, etc..)
Both need to be prevented/screened for. - vsujohn2, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2Adam and Jimmy
- donnytomas, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2I couldn't agree more.
- billraydrums, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2I'd rather fly with a stoned pilot any day rather than a drunk one. Of course, I'd like them all to be sober but as witnessed, that obviously ain't gonna happen. My choice is the stoner pilot.
- CamperBob, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2Were you dropped as a child? It's illegal and dangerous to fly an airplane after drinking. But this pilot didn't care. What makes you think he cares about marijuana laws?
Sheesh, marijuana prohibition is the new gun control. - billraydrums, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2Dammit....diet pepsi...monitor...wipey,....You bastard......
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -1/+3I paid $230 for a international schedule change, which probably cost them nothing extra, I only moved my flight up one day because there were empty seats at that flight, and I had an emergency to attend to.
JetBlue needs to go international soon man... cuz this AA service sucks ball, can just do everyone a favor and go out of business. - RiotHeart, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1I wonder if they will make him attend AA
- ChloeMS, on 05/23/2009, -0/+1If the pay for commercial pilots was commensurate with the responsibility taken and training required, more pilots would be under less stress.
Also, training and job loads placed on pilots by the airlines certainly comes into play. ABC News recent report on the Buffalo commuter plane crashed revealed that the co-pilot flew from the west coast to the east in order to get to work... she commuted across the country, and yet was paid what a waitress might expect. The pilot fared no better. Many now even bear the costs for overnight stays between flights
Airlines have increased flying hours while decreasing pay for pilots (the same holds true for local and regional air controllers.) I not only hold the pilots responsible, but their employers as well. Don't think that because your pilots are sober that your pilots are capable of flying the plane. They most likely are very tired and stressed out! Thank God auto-pilots have taken most of the drudgery out of flying, but then, that auto-pilot, as well as other flight characteristics AND the flight plan (via the flight computer) has to be programmed by the pilots before take off! - urtocool, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1The test is in London so it doesn't count for American Airlines. Right? RIGHT!?
- MasterChi, on 05/22/2009, -1/+2They have setups in cars that you must pass a breathalyzer test before it will start.......they should have the same for the airplanes. I'm sure the pilots will find a way around it somehow but it would still help.
- djdingo, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1I'm sorry but if I show up to my job DRUNK I'm pretty sure I'd get fired and I'm not responsible for the safety of hundreds of people.
This pilot should be fired. - CamperBob, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1There's something to be said for expecting professional behavior and treating people like professionals in return. Breath tests for every pilot = "We don't trust you to behave like a professional."
Of course, some will abuse that trust, but realistically: how many major air disasters have involved intoxicated pilots? Is this really a problem that needs to be solved with such intrusive, demeaning measures?
If you want to improve air safety, you should force the carriers to adjust their schedules to discourage _tired_ pilots from flying. - renanrrinaldi, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1I see what you did there!
- LethalGeek, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1I really really doubt this is a common occurrence by any stretch of the imagination.
- JohnnyDIGGme, on 05/22/2009, -2/+3Dunno why you got down-dugg. That was funny *****!
(I'm a bottle of wine into my night, so I'll re-read this comment tomorrow to ensure it's still applicable) - sjbdallas, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1The ones on Southwest aren't bad.
- JohnnyDIGGme, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1Disregard my previous comment. I see you've been Dugg up.
- Squeetard, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1Capt. Sully is not amused.
- ravage86, on 05/23/2009, -1/+1Such a system is dangerous and a waste of money. It could just be part of the security line they already go through. Adding a system like that to a plane would add another complication to an already complicated system. Suppose the engines shut off during flight, and can't be turned on due to a glitch in the breathalyzer.
- socokoolaid, on 05/22/2009, -1/+1I hope he was really drinking, we all know by the source code that some breathalyzers are garbage. Not to mention all the many things that make you blow positive, from breath spray to food. It'd be pretty ***** if he lost his job, and career, over some fluke (Like many many people do when they loose their drivers license over a fluke. Let's face it, not having a license is a sentence to being poor and worthless.).
- LukeBond, on 05/22/2009, -1/+0Imagine getting pulled over for that? Drink flying.
- Princeamor, on 05/22/2009, -2/+1You should start flying again.. did you hear they do a breathalyzer test on the pilots before they fly?
- inactive, on 05/22/2009, -5/+2Oh come on, don't bring your pro-marijuana pro-conspiracies_everywhere mumbo-jumbo here. 208 people risked their lives because some lowlife didn't care if he was clear for flying or not, it's not some ***** put up by your government to hinder your Freedom Joint Project.
- chamorro, on 05/22/2009, -4/+1Buried for no title and for digging a yahoo news article.
- nigelmansell, on 05/22/2009, -7/+3Don't all planes now fly on autopilot?
Anyways i've always believed that to defeat a breatherlizer test, just use mouth wash. The reading would be way off and there's no laws against bad breath. -
