- Yoweigh, on 04/15/2008, -2/+23FTA: "Up to now, those records have been a treasure trove for anyone who's had the time to travel to Washington and view them on microfilm at the Archives. Now, they'll be available online as well."
Available online for a fee, yes. This article is nothing but an advertisement for ancestry.com. - Hawk2007, on 04/15/2008, -2/+19Even 100 years later in 1965, $84,000 would have been a pretty decent salary and definitely at the top of the income bracket. Hell, even today $84,000 is good money.
- lollypopz, on 04/15/2008, -1/+18***** I gotta file.

- yikiad, on 04/15/2008, -1/+12the average american will work until april 26 this year just to pay taxes...
- ender7074, on 04/15/2008, -7/+17It cracks me to to see all you flaming liberals bitching, pissing, and moaning about taxes when your very canidates preach every day about the importance of raising taxes.
- coldfire201, on 04/15/2008, -3/+13no i don`t support redistributing the wealth, silly marxist.
- Scheissen, on 04/15/2008, -3/+12The people (re: democrats) that keep on voting for the people who want higher taxes should be the only ones who pay them.
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 04/15/2008, -0/+9You get those at qudruple the cost with a fraction of the accountability you should.
- ShugNinx21, on 04/15/2008, -0/+9The Boston Tea Party was a response to taxation without Representation, at least you got that almost right...
- AnarkeIncarnate, on 04/15/2008, -0/+8***** the government. WHY do they get to survive after all this irresponsibility? Let the country survive, but the government can be damned. Rebuild in a better image and return to our foundation's principles.
- hrhs556x, on 04/15/2008, -6/+14Finally a simple explanation for the Obamatards,
- inactive, on 04/15/2008, -2/+10"Abraham Lincoln (fifth name from the top) is listed as having income of $25,000 for the year 1864, the equivalent of $350,000 today."
"Another document shows President Abraham Lincoln's $25,000 income (about $566,000 today) for 1864"
According to http://www.westegg.com/inflation/infl.cgi, it's the equivalent of $1,399,430
Well? Which is it? - serif69, on 04/15/2008, -1/+9More than half of your taxes go to "mandatory spending", which includes all social programs and the interest on national debt. So you're basically paying for your taxes to go to other people via an enormous, inefficient bureaucracy and for penalties for the government spending too much as it is.
- DaDrake, on 04/15/2008, -7/+14The great thing about Obama.... he will increase taxes and make us feel good about it =)
- clclark33, on 04/15/2008, -1/+7Yeah, except the Republicans are spending like Democrats these days. Both of those parties have lost their way.
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 04/15/2008, -0/+6You have good points, but tax and spend versus what we're doing now? I'll take neither. Whose going to cut taxes and spending.... nobody yet.
- bdbr, on 04/15/2008, -0/+5Actually a lot of that comes from local taxes, which tends to be a pittance compared to federal taxes.
The largest portion of federal discretionary spending goes to military and education (education being a distant second). Not all military spending goes to the war. They have IT and all that, too - a lot of paychecks. - orxor, on 04/15/2008, -4/+9Although you're right, from the candidates that are left and have a chance at winning, which ones won't do that? McCain is just going to screw up the economy have the Fed print more money and tax people through inflation and Hilary will raise taxes just as much or even more. Basically we're screwed.
- nbyn, on 04/15/2008, -2/+7"Don't blame the taxes for our country's woes, blame the politicians whom you elected that are mis-spending it."
Given that EVERY politician in my lifetime has mis-spent my taxes to a certain degree, I'll continue to minimize the damage by fighting taxes. - JimSwarthow, on 04/15/2008, -0/+4well I'd argue w/ the "meltdown" scenario but for giggles let's say that's true. do you really think throwing more money at the problem is gonna help??
here's what I'm saying: don't believe the hype. it's not that the Govt doesn't have enough money, it's that they are completely and utterly incompetent at managing it. I don't care whether it's a Rep or a Dem, I wouldn't leave either in charge of balancing a 9 year old's check-book much less managing a trillion-dollar budget. that's if I had the choice or at least more than the 2 choices of the usual suspects.
Thomas Jefferson had a great idea/observation:
"[T]he States can best govern our home concerns and the general government our foreign ones. I wish, therefore...never to see all offices transferred to Washington, where, further withdrawn from the eyes of the people, they may more secretly be bought and sold at market."
-- Thomas Jefferson (letter to Judge William Johnson, 12 June 1823) - NonLeftistDiggr, on 04/15/2008, -2/+6Sorry dude, the amount we provide to people greatly eclipses the need of those who can't provide for themselves. A good chunk of it is insurance for irresponsibility. It completely amazes me the faith people have in government when they rob us blind in our face, provide expensive but poor services, very commonly employ people without merit requirements, and then have the nerve to walk out with a fat pension and tell us they "served" the public.
- lester1024, on 04/15/2008, -3/+7“Republicans believe every day is the Fourth of July. Democrats believe every day is April 15th,” - Ronald Reagan, 1984
- floort, on 04/15/2008, -0/+4Aw, don't make us do math... :(
- Kythas, on 04/15/2008, -1/+5There sure is a law that makes us liable to pay the income tax. It's called the 16th Amendment to the United States Constitution.
"The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration." - PompousPilots, on 04/15/2008, -3/+7hah. taxes are NOT what made our country "GREAT and mighty." it was actually free market capitalism and low taxation. The competition that free markets provide drive costs down and quality up and improve life for everyone, even the "poor."
And it is inevitable that a group of politicians will mis-spend large amounts of the revenue that they collect. It isn't their money so they have no reason to be careful with it. The best way to fight the mis-spending would be to drastically reduce the amount of revenue that they get. - Kythas, on 04/15/2008, -0/+4It is? Damn, I had no idea I was either evil or rich.
- fokov, on 04/15/2008, -0/+3Yet, when I say people are slaves I get bashed for it. The slaves owners did pay their slaves some money in the form of housing and food. Good thing we are returning to that structure where we max the credit cards to pay for the gas to get to the job to pay for the bread we eat. And if we are lucky, the politicians will let us "borrow" a few bucks to stimulate the economy.
- orxor, on 04/15/2008, -0/+3I'm writing in Ron Paul as well, but that's not going to change the fact that we're screwed since I highly doubt that at this point he will get elected but I just can't vote for the lesser of 2 evils.
- Hananda, on 04/15/2008, -1/+4Everybody is aware of Fair Tax at this point, we don't need a several-page rehash.
- LeePeyton, on 04/15/2008, -1/+4Very screwed.
- npg6913, on 04/15/2008, -2/+5bill gates has got nothing on Andy Carnegie. I wish I were a steel baron
- AnarkeIncarnate, on 04/15/2008, -1/+4and who says we HAVE to vote for a "Chosen Anointed Candidate?" Why does choosing a victor matter when choosing that which represents us matters more? I am going to write in Ron Paul. If you want to write in Mike Gravel, or Dennis Kucinich, more power to you. Tell them we will not choose based on who they pick for us.
- mtekk, on 04/15/2008, -0/+3I say cutting spending is the solution, or at the minimum freeze increases in program funding.
- Kythas, on 04/15/2008, -0/+3I paid almost $18,000 in taxes last year. That's way too much.
- inactive, on 04/15/2008, -1/+4Err, $416,497, not $1,399,430
- relic180, on 04/15/2008, -1/+41999 wasn't the beginning of his presidency...
- RabidAngel, on 04/15/2008, -4/+7As already stated, the average American citizen works 3.5 MONTHS just to pay his or her share of federal taxes. Add in state tax (if you have any) + sales tax and the time jumps significantly. Is that really fair? Does anyone actually think the government needs that much money, when they just "lose" $34 billion in cash? Or when they are going to spend $200 billion this year on Iraq alone?
Are you ok with that? Really?
U.S. military spending, which includes the Dept. of Defense plus nuclear weapons, is equal to the military spending of the next 15 countries combined. Yes, if you add up the top 15 military budgets for other countries, the United States still spends more. While I may seem to be harping on military spending, which I am generally in favor of, our entire governmental structure needs to be torn down and rebuilt. It is terribly inefficient, corrupt, and bloated. - relic180, on 04/15/2008, -1/+4Any wage that you can pay your bills, buy groceries, and can still afford a wave runner at the end of the day, is a pretty decent salary.
- Kythas, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2He won't make me feel good about it.
- dexter411, on 04/15/2008, -1/+3... So?
The rich getting richer doesn't actually make you poorer, you know. It might give you less motivation to work hard, though. - Alpione, on 04/15/2008, -1/+3No doubt. According to the Democrats, $84k/year is bordering on being part of the "Evil Rich."
- relic180, on 04/15/2008, -1/+355k is enough to live comfortably. At that salary, you're not starving.
- Kythas, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2However, since the tax cuts Federal revenue into the treasury has been at record levels for the last 6 years. It's well established economic principle that cutting taxes improves the economy and increases revenue into the treasury because more people are employed and paying taxes.
The problem is spending. We need to cut Federal spending, not increase taxes. Pork barrel projects need to go away. We need to NOT implement government run health care. The government must be held to the same fiscal responsibility we hold ourselves to.
In some cases, however, the government must go into deficit spending, as in a time of war. I want our troops to have the best supplies and materials available to give them the best chance of winning the war - notice I said winning the war, not simply pull out. One day the war will end and the money spent there will be spent there no longer - if we implement all the social programs either Clinton or Obama are wanting, it will be a never ending growth of government spending. - bdbr, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2Huh, he made several times as much as me but paid a LOT less in taxes (all inflation-adjusted, of course). We were in a war during his tenure, too.
