- Octaman, on 01/01/2008, -7/+68768 Kbps downstream... and AT&T is calling it high speed internet access? LOL!
- JaredXM, on 01/01/2008, -1/+54Believe it or not some people still use dialup. So this is high speed to them.
- Mohdoo, on 01/01/2008, -4/+51I will never understand why they only include downstream and never ***** say up -_-
- atheinostic, on 01/01/2008, -3/+38Your world. Delivered. To the NSA. Now just $20/month!
- chupavacas, on 01/01/2008, -0/+35I just got this. It wasn't intuitive where to find it on their site but somehow I got it. It took about a month for this to be installed. A big part of the delay was that I had it installed in a hundred year old house that already had a land line and DSL on someone else's account. The techs know how to do this without any problem but the computer system is not up to speed with handling inquiries. One problem is that they are used to looking up phone numbers to reference the work orders but the "naked" DSL lines have dummy numbers, which are not used throughout the system, so if you have issues with the installation, like I did, you're going to spend a few frustrating hours on the phone just trying to get a clear answer. BTW, they call it "dry loop" DSL, not naked. Now I have it, works great.
- ThetaDot, on 01/01/2008, -0/+33If only AT&T was offered in my area. Comcast makes me and all of my housemates want to cry.
- dcbebop, on 01/01/2008, -1/+33# $19.95 per month with 1-year term commitment*
How is that "no contract" - tastypastry, on 01/01/2008, -0/+28Still beats dialup.

- Wiini, on 01/01/2008, -0/+19Now someone find a cheap bare-bones DSL link for QWEST! (please!)
- MrXfromPlanetX, on 01/01/2008, -0/+17If you like supporting the government's unconstitutional warrantless wire taping programs, by all means sign up with AT&T the worst collaborator of all http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060726-7351 ...
http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Verizon-Admits- ...
I know many people say, they have nothing to hide, but that's not the point. The point is AT&T is assisting the US Government in unconstitutional activities and should not be rewarded for it. - atticus8, on 01/01/2008, -0/+16You must think like the mind of their marketer. First, upstream is (almost) always quite a bit smaller than down, and in marketer-speak, the bigger, more impressive number you can display, the better ("OVER 1 BILLION SERVED!"). Notice Verizon clearly lists the FiOS upstream in their ads, but they didn't in their old ads for DSL. This is ostensibly because the upstream is so large that that specific product ad could break the second rule: simplicity. Most people are very unacquainted with computer terms or tech-anything. Two numbers makes it more confusing; remember that if you stick two numbers up there, the first thing most people will need to be told is that there even is a difference between upstream and downstream, and that it is usually significant. The fact that the companies make it so hard to find makes me believe that they would rather not explain it at all.
I don't condone any of this kind of thinking - a marketer's language is the most crude language available. I'm just trying to explain. - Dustin00, on 01/01/2008, -1/+16I wouldn't do it -- they're betting you will forget to cancel it in 6 months. I know I'd forget.
- bkienzle22, on 01/01/2008, -0/+14Upstream on the 3Mbps plan is 512k
- atticus8, on 01/01/2008, -0/+14I remember my first high speed hook up was exactly 768 kbps, and I was blown away by the speed after dial up. I was recently in the D.R. and the 768 seems to be very common, and let me you: it was not bad. The dial up at my mother's house is absolutely numbing - it crushes your desire to just browse online. There is no way I look up something over there without bringing in a magazine to read while pages load.
Even the slowest DSL is a quantum leap into another world of browsing. The jump from 768 to 3 or 5Mbps won't ever be as significant because it's simply a smaller multiple than from dialup to slow DSL, but also, psychologically, the factor at which pages load is increased almost trivially. (And most people don't even know what torrents are, so it's not a typical consumer issue.) - worthone, on 01/01/2008, -1/+15Wow ybanerd, you need to smile more. And lay off the caps, too.
- jftitan, on 01/01/2008, -1/+14Hopefully people will digg up and down, just to keep you at 1. Honestly both companies suck.
- swoosh_bnd, on 01/01/2008, -0/+12For all of the other ones it is no contract
- SiNN4R, on 01/01/2008, -1/+13 They're too busy being destroyed by the federal government.
- retral, on 01/01/2008, -0/+12I'd kill for verizon FIOS.
- Dustin00, on 01/01/2008, -0/+11I called my phone company and added DSL to my phone line, then canceled the phone line. They were certainly confused that I would do such a thing, but I was able to get what I wanted without too much effort.
- Octaman, on 01/01/2008, -1/+12Sorry, my bad. Apparently the FCC defines broadband as 200 Kbps and up.
- msomers, on 01/01/2008, -0/+10I wish AT&T's site didn't suck so hard. I might even consider switching to them if I could figure out their service via the website. It's so incredibly confusing.
- Infectedbull, on 01/01/2008, -7/+16dug for naked
- Wiini, on 01/01/2008, -1/+10The guy who wrote "no contract" is probably the same guy who thinks 15% on a car loan is a good deal.
- inactive, on 01/01/2008, -0/+9Speeds.
- bhowell, on 01/01/2008, -1/+9Google Calendar?
- mishaco, on 01/01/2008, -0/+7the downside is , its for new accounts only . im told that they " have to " disconnect my current at&t dsl and then start from scratch , which means 2 + weeks connectionless .
- s1mph0ny, on 01/01/2008, -0/+7AT&T won't bother you about bittorrent, and they provide 8day newsgroups. Now if they could just get some reliability going...
- tastypastry, on 01/01/2008, -0/+7I just ordered the Express a few weeks ago, it isn't too bad, beats what I was paying with Comcast.
- Lax32, on 01/01/2008, -0/+6I got a DSL connection from AT&T without a land line. Its not 20 dollars, but its probably way faster than what this deal would be.
You just have to prod around with the people until they give it to you. First they told me there was no way they could do it without a phone line, then they told me there was a way but they weren't doing it yet, then they finally said they would do it for me. - lukas88, on 01/02/2008, -1/+7Well they have officially out-bargained comcast, at least in my area.
I'll keep it in mind in case my neighbors ever stop using WEP :) - undauntedspirit, on 01/01/2008, -0/+5
Did you enter an AT&T home phone number?
If so, BellSouth® FastAccess® DSL is currently not available for xxx-xxx-xxxx . If you just activated your AT&T home phone number, please try again in 72 hours.
We can notify you when FastAccess DSL is available at your home. Please provide your contact information. We also offer dial-up service.
Did you enter a non-AT&T home phone number or wireless number?
If so, you’ll need to order local phone service and Internet service together. Find out if you can get local and Internet Service at your address.
Or, please try again by entering another AT&T home phone number:
ATT sucks. - Wiini, on 01/01/2008, -0/+559.99$ a month (after the first year of 10$ a month savings) plus you still need to purchase an ISP!?
I said "CHEAP"....! - tastypastry, on 01/01/2008, -1/+6I switched to the Express plan, about $24 a month. Comcast was getting to expensive for me.
- ThreeDee912, on 01/02/2008, -0/+5!!! I'm paying $54.95 a month for a lousy 1 Mbps connection from my local telco (meh), and FiOS is about the same price for a 20Mbps connection! It totally sucks FiOS isn't in my area.
- tech42er, on 01/02/2008, -0/+5Idiots. They try to hide these $10 or $20 a month services instead of heavily advertising them and killing the competition.
- 47f0, on 01/02/2008, -0/+5But his dollars don't, and that's sort of the point. If you vote with your money to utterly unscrupulous monopolists, you get what you deserve.
- Canute, on 01/02/2008, -2/+7Puny Americans with your inferior broadband speed!
- s1mph0ny, on 01/01/2008, -1/+6hahaha
- inactive, on 01/01/2008, -0/+5High speed internet?
I think I'm going to consider getting that. - jaxxon, on 01/01/2008, -0/+5And to check availability in your area: http://www.usa.att.com/dsl/check_avail.jsp
- ericdano, on 01/01/2008, -1/+6Don't ever sign up for their Uverse service though. The worst thing ever.
- dattaway, on 01/01/2008, -0/+5What is the final monthly bill? Is it even close to $20 after they get done adding taxes, surcharges, regulatory fees, land line access, NSA tax, rural internet tax, recovery fee,... Is technical support the famous run around through electronic menus and disconnects with thick accents? And how difficult is it to cancel? Do you have to argue to cancel? Do they have fees for quitting? And hidden late fees several months later from a collection agency, because they cancelled one month later than requested? This is AT&T, so I have to ask.
- gblackbox, on 01/01/2008, -0/+5AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet - **No Voice Line** - Elite
Fastest
$38.99 per month*
Our fastest top-of-the-line speed
* Downstream speed up to 6.0 Mbps—up to 100x faster than dial-up
* No term commitment required
Perhaps the phone line limitation is only via the U-Verse plan. - Fragalishus, on 01/01/2008, -0/+5While visiting my Aunt back in October I discovered AT&T was charging her $49.95 a month for 384/384 dsl. Couldn't even stream Youtube videos without buffering every 10 seconds. For $50 a month...
Not like you can really yell at a CSR for it anything either. That's how these companies make millions from all the people who don't really read the fine print or never really pay attention to the bill, they just pay whatever it says at the end of the month. - Nothlit, on 01/01/2008, -0/+4What the heck is HSI?
- s1mph0ny, on 01/01/2008, -0/+4that's better than my non-naked plan...
- heystoopid, on 01/01/2008, -2/+6probably comes complete with a rootkit as well given how willing AT&T are spying on their customers !
