- dopesick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The author is a moron. There are LOTS of people out there WITHOUT broadband internet. Watching TV, surfing want ads etc... is a hell of a chore on dial up...
Don't buy a newspaper... Christ... You know there are FREE publications out there for job listings?
#2 Use credit card offers.
#3 manage debt
#4 get rid of credit cards...
Sheit, skip to #4 and forget #2&3 - that'll save you tons right there. - JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+91) Don't pay for video games, software, cable tv, movies, books. TVUPlayer, newsgroups and bittorrents will do just fine.
2) Every time you're at the mall refill your (improper) cup at a self-serve soda fountain.
2a) Every time you're at a fast food place get lots of napkins, forks, ketchup, etc.
3) Use 800-FREE-411 and Google to lookup phone numbers, not 411.
4) Use Skype and other free VOIP solutions to make free phone calls.
4a) Get a free 775 area code (Nevada) number to give out to people to call you on your Gizmo account on your computer
5) Eat ramen noodles

Be careful. This is one of the worst "Save money in 400 easy steps" lists I've ever seen.
Some of these are just straight-up awful advice. - senseigmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah, its a real pain in the ass not to be able to drink coffee and change my music while i'm driving. There is actually much less time spent shifting gears than you would think, unless you're stuck in traffic. As for the mileage thing, who cares, its more fun anyway.
- tylerdurdenclub, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8What a bunch of garbage. It is basically telling you to live in a cardboard box.
- wfmk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This tip really made me giggle:
50) Buy a standard transmission car.
.... Except if you get stuck in a lot of traffic jams, stick with automatic. Transmissions are hard on the knee in stop-and-go traffic.
Oh yes, us Europeans all have very sore knees! I don't know how we cope! - matija, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5WTF? "Get a free iPod, MP3 player, or laptop."
yeah right, anything that suggests actually going through those scams is just plain dumb - xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6...and Buy a Wii
- stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3> "Gas prices will do that"
If you panic and have to try to save money when gas goes up $.50 a gallon, then you have other serious money problems to work out. Honestly, I don't get it why people panic so much when they pay $60 instead of $50 at the pump. Go to Starbucks three fewer times and you're all even again. - DarkSenay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3(89) Watch Poorboys.tv
- askldjd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2(64) Shave less often.
Yup. That's the silver bullet for money saving. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2#89 Instead of buying expensive winter clothing; collect lint from your bellybutton at the end of each day until you have enough to knit yourself a cozy sweater.
- chriszuma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It should have been titled, "How to be a penniless hippy."

- coldshuts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This article is a blatant spam from someone with nothing else too do. Maybe he should get a Job instead of writing stupid article.
Any FAQ about saving money that tells you to buy a computer with a TV tuner is just plain dump. - benedictm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+136 is the winner for me
- datcracka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2#(1) Look for jobs online.
That's just stupid. Anybody familiar with employment techniques of the 21st century knows the online job marketplace is so flooded your efforts are best put elseware. To cram an entire class into a couple of sentences: Look for companies you'd like to work for, find out everything you can about them, and contact them to let them know who you are, what you do, the fact you like them a lot, and would like to be part of their company. #1 most effective way. This "save money technique" is bad advice because he assumes everyone buys newspapers to get jobs. Their livingrooms full, to the brim, spilling out the windows with newspapers.
#(2) Take advantage of credit card promos.
Then this tip is filled with spam. Nice job jerkface.
#(3) Manage your credit card debt.
#(4) Ditch your credit card and pay with cash.
While this is true, and it is unfortunate that so many people get suckered into the credit trap (thanks to people who post spam in HowTo save cash posts), manging your credit debt comes with the responsibility of having credit. The real advice should be: manage your credit well. Get low APR's(depends on your age and other factors, try and stay below 10% if possible, and if not, get as clost to 10% as possible. Automatically refuse any card that has any fees associated with having the card. That could only be a few $100 per year, but if you don't pay on it, you could wind up owing $1000's, in part thanks to the fees that are for the privilege of having the card. Most cards don't charge you for your business, only when they want to sucker you.
#(5) Buy and sell stocks less often.
Poor people, you need money? Stop buying so goddamn many stocks! What the flyin' udge is in your boost basket? Great advice guy. Step out of the bubble every now and then, and breathe. Just breathe. Just breath in and let as little out on the rest of us, if possible.
#6) Don't buy a TV.
#Instead, get a large computer screen and a TV capture box (PVR - personal video #recorder) so that you can watch on your computer. You'll also save on electricity by not #having both TV and computer turned on at the same time. If you record shows on your #computer to watch later, you can often watch at a slightly faster speed, to save total #viewing time. (Depends on your viewing software.)
Yeah, great advice. Don't buy one big expensive thing, buy another! Here's an idea...get a good laptop if you're trying to save on electricity and use it as your everyday PC. Yeah, if you can live without a TV, go the streaming route. Get on viidoo.com too. Take advantage of that. And if you have DirecTV like I do, the streaming is about the same quality and you can actually find more conveniently. If you have a DirecTV DVR like I'm glad I don't, you'll even notice you pull out less hair trying to watch what you want online. God I miss Time Warner HD and DVR service. Not a plug, just a cry of shame now that I've been "rebranded" :(
I'll spare everyone else any more review of this crap. Most of it's just spam links to services this guy is hawking in guise as advice, trying to get a few pennies for your clicks. Find out who he is and mail him poop. Do it.
Flamewar on for any/all spelling mistakes! - joecoolmedia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1While you're meditating alone with your stink you could save twice as much by cutting your own hair. Start your own style!!!
- KillerX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Don't buy a Windows based computer - with all it's hidden costs
- Marfanity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1(40) Stretch your ground beef with ground cherries.
Wouldn't it be cheaper to stretch your ground beef with ground beef? - dbalaski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Voltage Regulator ?? Made me wonder too ...
A voltage regulator in itself consumes power to maintain a regulated output.
So your not going to really save anything here ..
Now I can see if they said: Put Surge Protectors on all your relatively expensive electronics or consider a whole house surge protectors... This is just a cheap insurance approach to saving the equipment from Spikes etc... - dbalaski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well -- yes & no
Credit cards companies charge stores apx 2% of purchase price to use thier cards.
So what do stores do ??? They build that charge into the cost of the product they sell.
Discover is just giving you part of that % back.
In some stores -- I talk to the manager and tell him what type of price will they give me if I pay CASH and not Credit Card --
Most stores won't do anything -- but smaller, local stores will sometimes strike a deal...
So moral of story -- if they don't want to give a discount for using old fashioned CASH, then use the discover card (or any other card that gives you cash back on purchases) --- at least you get a "Little discount" that way - mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That's all pretty basic. Do I really need to tell people 'Buy a Hybrid', 'Quit smoking, alcohol, and soda', 'turn off lights, electronics, and water when not in use', 'find good deals online'?
- davidod87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+189. Buy Vodka and stay constantly drunk, so you won't have to care about the stupid ***** above and can instead live in a state of constant bliss.
- sl3eper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"They're not just for European sports cars."
European sports cars, that don't have automatic transmissions, not your sedans and such. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Enough of this "saving money" crap already. There seems to be one on the front page everyday, ok! we get it now!
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I heard you can also cut off a small piece of soap and microwave it, it'll actually fluff up into a nice texture.
- dbalaski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Manual Transmission saves mre fuel is not really true.
Maybe pre '80s I would agree with that -- but the technilogy behind Automatic Transmissions has really gotten much much better since the 80s -- and you really have to work to beat the milage of automatic transmission nowadays ... I've seen this comment many times in Automotive Journals.
Second of all -- clutch plates have to be resurfaced/replaced peroidically -- count that into your cost.
(My last five cars had automatics, never had to do a damm thing to them) ...
as for Fun Factor -- my current car (VW Passat) has triptonic transmission -- I can drive it like a manual if I choose -- so I still have "Fun" factor. - aeiou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Autosticks don't count. Its just not the same as pushing in the clutch pedal.
- arlene1985, on 01/07/2009, -0/+0Simple yet practical advice. But the main con of all money-saving tips is how to implement them? It's planning, time and analysis.
http://hubpages.com/hub/Teaching-Teens-To-Save-Mon ...
It's so that easier to spend than to keep and save ;( - yzerizef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is by far the worst list I've ever seen! Some of these will ruin your credit score, others will just make your life miserable. My short list:
1. Pay yourself first, then pay bills and worry about everything else.
2. Save what you earn, invest what you save, diversify what you invest.
3. Don't spend money that you don't have. Having high credit card balances and spending beyond your means is never a good idea. Credit cards are fine as long as you make sure not to spend so much that you can't pay them off at the end of the month.
It amazes me how uneducated some people are when it comes to money. It's almost sickening. - Kobayashi953, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1(64) In addition to shaving less often, try using a traditional brush and soap bowl instead of aerosol shaving creams. Like this one:
http://www.wilkinson-swords.co.uk/index.php?id=1329
Cost me about $6.00/year for shaving foam.
God I'm cheap. - wertrose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What the hell is this?
(8) Get a voltage regulator.
If you have a lot of AC-based consumer electronics, use a voltage regulator to even out the amount of peak power you use at any time. - Sparks123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A really good article.........
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Tip #2340. Use both sides of the toilet paper.
Tip #2341. Deodorant is not important. Don't believe me? Ask the French: they save billions annually.
Tip #2342. Small stray animals taste better on pizza than pepperoni, and they're free. -
