- sockpuppets, on 11/21/2008, -2/+47My food bills dropped dramatically after I developed a taste for human flesh.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+32Seriously, just learn how to cook. I admit that during the past few years of economic bliss I bought many meals pre-prepared... but when I do buy just ingredients to cook from scratch, it's $1.50-$2.50 per person per meal for vegetarian meals and maybe $5 per person per meal with quality meats. And if you don't mind eating pork & beans and cornbread-style meals, you can eat for under $1 per person per meal.
Cooking from scratch is cheapest, but buying mostly-prepared food is cheaper too... a $4 Digornio's pizza isn't any worse than a $12 Pizza Hut one, and it doesn't get much easier than tossing a frozen pizza in an oven. I know people who spend $30+ per day on food because they just can't cook unless it involves a microwave... if things get really bad, a lot of people just are going to have to start cooking for themselves. - radzack, on 12/02/2008, -1/+31Good article. Let's hope we're not setting up for the Great-er Depression :/
- rtcrooks, on 11/21/2008, -2/+26Simplify life. Ride a bike. Good things.
- 029JO, on 11/21/2008, -3/+25I really really hope that if we get out of this mess high-schools/collages will start giving compulsory class on budgeting and living with money i a responsible appropriate manner. Please get the message out that you don't spend what you don't have.
- Trekhawk, on 11/21/2008, -1/+21I agree, but let's hope "collages" teach spelling first. :-P
- detroitcity, on 11/21/2008, -0/+17Tip number 8- Save the boxes from anything you purchase, you never know when you might be needing shelter or kindling. A refrigerator box makes a wonderful and comfortable single-story ranch. Shoe boxes make great hobo fires.
- badenglishihave, on 11/21/2008, -0/+17"Rent an extra bedroom to a friend, have your child move back home if you are struggling to send him or her rent money every month..."
As if parents are entitled to support their children once they leave home. Tell them to get a job and pay their own bills; THAT'S good parenting. - WaCkYmAk, on 11/21/2008, -2/+16Bottom Line: Don't spend more than you make.
- Mpwns, on 11/21/2008, -0/+14already sectioned off most of my back yard for a garden, just getting the soil ready for planting in the spring. people already say I'm crazy, i look at it as win win. if things get better at least i will still save money.
- mibi, on 11/21/2008, -0/+14Some great simple tips here. Depressions are a great way for people to re-evaluate what they need and want.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+14Cooking at home can also be much better for the waistline as well.
- borez, on 11/21/2008, -2/+15I find that mugging innocent people in affluent areas has always kept me in the standard of living I've become used to over the years.
- captainanndor, on 11/21/2008, -0/+12Seconded.
It drove me absolutely nuts that my parents sent my brother money for rent, when he moved off-campus as a Sophomore (and then a year later failed out).
I stayed in the dorms my first two years, then in an on-campus apartment for my last two years. Dorms were paid out of my loans/scholarship. The apartment was a combination of loans and out of pocket.
I stayed during the summers, which was not covered by tuition, so I had to get a job and pay it myself. Stupid being the oldest child and getting less handouts. - eSentrik, on 11/21/2008, -0/+10..or Great-est
- londubh, on 11/21/2008, -0/+9Tip # 8 Shoe leather when boiled properly is a nutritious snack. Don't have leather shoes? Tip # 9 When you run out of food for Fido, Fido when boiled properly can make a nutritious stew.
- Trekhawk, on 11/21/2008, -3/+128. Get used to the delicacy known as lard sandwiches.
- wrobson, on 11/21/2008, -6/+14tip # 8 - Watch the banks VERY closely, they are usually doing something shady while trying to look like hero's
ie. Paulson's 140 Billion dollar back door cash baggy to banks... learn more.

tip #9 - When your country isn't producing anything worth buying...then you will go into a recession.
tip#10 - When your country has become successful in the last 60 years because you went around to developing nations and convinced/bribed/politically captured a country into giving you resources for a bargain, and those countries no longer want you there... leave and start harvesting your own resources.

tip # 11 - The gold standard will not work... Gold is a useless metal and is only shinny, although he has good points...Ron Paul needs to sit down on the gold standard issue and work to combat corruption. - inactive, on 11/21/2008, -1/+9The ONLY 'tards are the ones who didn't pay attention when he warned us of the very fiscal ***** we're now discussing. Dimwit.
- detroitcity, on 11/21/2008, -0/+8BS. Without the public works projects Appalachia would still be without electricity and the Colorado river wouldn't be providing water for anybody.
- chuckDontSurf, on 11/21/2008, -0/+8Postpone that 3-way and hire only one prostitute.
- detroitcity, on 11/21/2008, -4/+12Rumors of Social Sercurity's demise have been greatly overstated.
Good thing we didn't let Bush privatize social security when he had the chance; then today we'd really be talking about a great depression.
BTW, the latest Medicare reform came through a Republican congress, where benefits were greatly increased for the elderly. (Crazy republican socialists)!
You, my friend, seem misinformed. - jaybol, on 11/21/2008, -0/+8Can you please cite an example of advice on not buying anything from the article? Why don't you go take one for the team and start buying houses while they sink like a rock. The advice is to learn how to spend less than you make, not to stop spending altogether.
- detroitcity, on 11/21/2008, -1/+8Charlie? Sweet Dee?
- etx313, on 11/21/2008, -0/+7I do baked chicken breast with broccoli or asparagus and a potato for under $2.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+7Dinner at home, not McDonalds.
- borez, on 11/21/2008, -0/+7Could not agree more
- ChromaVita, on 11/21/2008, -0/+7As difficult as a rag and some chloroform.
- roctimo, on 11/21/2008, -0/+6All you need is a six pack and a hot plate!
- DiscoLando, on 11/21/2008, -1/+7"If you can’t afford to pay cash, you can’t afford it."
Words of wisdom and words to live by.
Don't fall for the old trap of saying you'll buy something on credit and then just pay it off at the end of the month. Sure, the odds are slim that you won't get paid when you think you will, but if you don't, you're in for a world of hurt. - kingmanic, on 11/21/2008, -1/+7By 2041 those on the take will have diminished and the tax base will be expanding again soon as the echo boomers start working en mass. Many countries are far more liberal and have far more liberal governance then the democrats without much effect on the economy. Your paranoid rantings are made a lie by every other affluent nation. Why is the US richer? It works more hours per person. The GDP factored per hour worked of many of the lefty socialist nations is higher. America does well because it's people are willing to work more hours. If you factor for every other variable, none mean as much economically as your average hours worked.
Socialized healthcare, social programs, etc . . . have been not been shown to lead into a communist dystopia while America's aversion to social programs have been demonstrated to correlate with poor and expensive healthcare as well as a highly stressed, slightly undereducated, and very tired group of people.
Capitalism has it's place. So does social programs. - maz2331, on 11/21/2008, -0/+6And - really, you can't beat the freshness of home-grown veggies. Even if it ends up costing more than buying, the quality makes it worthwhile.
- quez, on 11/21/2008, -0/+58. Don't buy stock on margin.
- roctimo, on 11/21/2008, -1/+6Do you live in Andale?
- imronburgundy83, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5FRANK!!!??? I HAVE THE HUNGER!!!
- cle2105, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5I'm fortunate enough to love franks 'n beans. I spend about $2 per meal.
- Pyros7, on 11/22/2008, -0/+5"...since owning a car is more of a luxury than a necessity..."
Says the guy who's never left the city. Why do so many people forget that there are massive swatches of the country where it's normal to have to drive 30 miles each way to work? Or maybe I'm supposed to make a bike trip to the grocery store each day to get food? - drewbeta, on 11/21/2008, -1/+6Yeah, sell your house and downsize in this market? now is the time to buy, but selling is a different story. If you bought in the last 2 years, you're likely to loose $20,000 or possibly more.
- oldhick, on 11/21/2008, -1/+6You don't quite get it and that is ok. But those tips are FAR from stupid. Once you realize what is coming in the next two to three years, you'll understand that people are just going to be looking out for themselves.
People are going to be out of work on a massive scale and buying houses to help the "housing market" is even going to cross their minds. Feeding their family and keeping them warm in the winter will be their concern.
You'll learn, it's just a shame you'll end up learning the hard way. - BESTenemy, on 11/21/2008, -2/+7 Stand your ground. Don't let the government use panic in order to make you give up whatever rights you have left. You're entitled to nothing, but the products of your own labor.
The bigger mess the government creates, the more power it'll attempt to grab. The more power it gets, the bigger mess it'll create. - captainanndor, on 11/21/2008, -2/+6French toast and bacon. 12 eggs, a loaf of bread, maybe 2 cups of milk and 1 pound of bacon is enough to feed 3-4 people (with leftover eggs and bread) and is only like... 6 dollars.
Also incredibly filling, delicious, and fast to prepare. Omnomnom. - badenglishihave, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4Amen. I paid my own way through college by working fast food from age 14 to 18 and then working paid internships in between semesters at college. The only money my parents ever gave me was $100 spending cash my freshman year. I had to take out some loans but I still graduated with only ~$33,000 worth of debt.
Bottom line: it just feels good to make your own way in life. Try it. - oldhick, on 11/21/2008, -3/+7Lets see, during the great depression few people owned homes. You were viewed as a total loser if you had a second mortgage and they were almost un-heard of, and no one had credit card debt...
Fast forward to today... You're looking at a depression that will blow the "Great Depression" out of the water. - inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4Amazing. Someone actually dugg this comment down. I rest my case, cluelessness abounds, period.
- detroitcity, on 11/21/2008, -1/+5Building an economy based strictly on consumerism and the price of housing = fcuking stupid. Go buy a house you can't afford on an ARM.
- cubicledrone, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4So instead of having someone else pay for your housing you had someone else pay for your housing. Well done.
- maz2331, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4tip # 11 - The gold standard will not work... Gold is a useless metal and is only shinny, although he has good points...Ron Paul needs to sit down on the gold standard issue and work to combat corruption.
True, in and of itself. However, if the currency is susceptable to inflation it HAS to be banked or otherwise invested just to prevent losing value over time. Just putting cash under the mattress in such an environment means that you're accepting a negative return. - inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4Downmodded for sheer stupidity.
- 029JO, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4Sorry English is my second language :( thanks for pointing it out though :)
- RudeTurnip, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4We taste like pork. That's why human flesh was often called "long pork."
