- frishack, on 04/16/2008, -7/+5but always up in the long term. Thanks for playing.
- armbar, on 04/16/2008, -2/+8Right, because there aren't such things as ghettos, ghost towns, and project housing.
- frishack, on 04/16/2008, -2/+1Still up over the long term; even in the ghettos where I live.
- armbar, on 04/17/2008, -1/+1That's inflation, not property values.
- frishack, on 04/16/2008, -2/+1Still up over the long term; even in the ghettos where I live.

Detroit
Houston- buadach, on 04/16/2008, -1/+1I thought the US was having a property crisis at the moment, surely a few cities elsewhere on the planet must be having more of a housing boom than places like Detroit.
- Narcism, on 04/16/2008, -1/+21) I hope CNN doesn't go down.
- roastedbagel, on 04/16/2008, -15/+68Detroit? Sorry but LOL at anyone who would choose to move to that god-forsaken place.
- akilleen, on 04/16/2008, -7/+15Looking at the map, the homes it shows are in Farmington Hills and West Bloomfield. Quite a long way from "God forsaken".
- loobis, on 04/16/2008, -8/+19LOL at smart and funny people that think all of Metro Detroit is a hellhole, never mind that Oakland County is usually one of the wealthiest counties in the country. Oh, and while we're on the subject, if you're scared of downtown Detroit, you're a wuss.

- CiXeL, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1even if you live in a good neighborhood it doesnt mean your kids wont go to school with thugs or you wont have to interact with thugs at the grocery store. besides, with the massive brain drain away from that hellhole do you really think the best teachers are living there?
- BrandonR717, on 04/16/2008, -0/+2Well said. Yeah, I wouldn't really want to live in the city of Detroit, but I would say a lot of the surrounding areas are very nice places to live. I'm looking at buying a house in Waterford myself.
- avengingturnip, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1Didn't OCP clean up downtown Detroit?
- mcphatty, on 04/16/2008, -1/+6detroit is waaay better now than it was 10 years ago.
- n1vek, on 04/16/2008, -1/+0Ever heard of Kwame Kilpatrick?

yeah i saw, a tree on flickr growing in the book depository.
the city is turning into mulch - that sounds like an improvement to me.

- n1vek, on 04/16/2008, -1/+0Ever heard of Kwame Kilpatrick?
- YanSan, on 04/16/2008, -4/+2You want to know why Detroit is the way it is? because people like you and so many others talk ***** about how terrible it is without having even been there. and if they have, it was in and out for a tigers game. most people who say this ***** haven't experienced Detroit. The city has many problems (Kwame, for one) but it is not as bad as everyone makes it seem. i Lived there for a year for school, and grew up not so far away from it. If you're not stupid, it can be a really nice place. people need to stop talking down on Detroit, it just keeps making more people afraid to go there which continues to damage the city
- jehoesefat, on 04/16/2008, -1/+1Detroit is bad because of people hating on it? Interesting.
- akilleen, on 04/16/2008, -0/+2No, it is why there is a perception of it being bad. Detroit has it's problem, that is for sure, but people overdo it when they talk about it. There are people from the suburbs that say they won't go into Detroit unless they have a gun, which is completely ridiculous and unnecessary. When people are that scared of the city, they obviously don't go down there, which doesn't do much to help it's economy.
- CiXeL, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1thats why i keep meeting hordes of people migrating out of that hell hole and moving down to south florida snapping up every job they can all the while telling me how bad everything is just up I-75.

- mbonnin, on 04/16/2008, -0/+0Well, that, and the fact that the US auto industry has been collapsing for the last 15 years..

I prefer California over those states though.- blah247, on 04/16/2008, -1/+3California is a good place to live... it's the housing costs there that suck.

You can have it.- CiXeL, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1there are worse hells. trust me on this one. honestly socal may be one of the best places to be in the country at the moment. people weathered the depression quite well in new york. you want to be surrounded by affluent people when ***** hits the fan.
you really really feel the recession in many other parts of the country right now compared to LA.
- CiXeL, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1there are worse hells. trust me on this one. honestly socal may be one of the best places to be in the country at the moment. people weathered the depression quite well in new york. you want to be surrounded by affluent people when ***** hits the fan.

- psg188, on 04/16/2008, -4/+6Atlanta is a nice place to live, especially if you or your kids are college bound, instate tuition for Georgia Tech is a god send.
- skyshock1, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1In-state tuition?!? Dude, they have the HOPE scholarship. You maintain a B average, and the state lottery pays all your tuition. That RULES.
- Mansellisme, on 04/16/2008, -0/+0If they do stay popular, won't be long before more large houses are built around them...
- SillyRabbits, on 04/16/2008, -1/+9Wow, recommending the Roswell area north of Atlanta? Housing prices costs might be fine, but to commute down 400 into the city is about the worst possible route in the entire city.
- hollismb, on 04/16/2008, -2/+2You ain't kidding, man.
- coasterswim, on 04/16/2008, -0/+2You could live south of the city along with... no one else.
- TylerDCA, on 04/16/2008, -1/+6Try Canada. While Canadians are bargain hunting in the states, it doesn't look like Americans are investing in the booming Canadian real-estate market.
- Coffeedemon, on 04/16/2008, -2/+1I'd like to afford a house in the next couple years rather than encourage developers and investors to come up and take them all.
- musters, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1Canada keeps weathering the US real estate storm, even though they are on the front lines. They should be the first to be hit yet their real estate market is surprisingly resilient and holding well due to immigration and commodities.
- RadiatedAnt, on 04/16/2008, -0/+8seruosly if you come to digg to make a life changing decision and relocate to a far away place, you have problems.

#1 Atlanta
#2 Boston
#3 Cincinnati
#4 Cleveland
#5 Detroit
#6 Houston- DCGaymer, on 04/16/2008, -2/+13With the exception of Boston....aren't the rest of those flyover or change of plane cities? No one really WANTs to live there right?
- jcm267, on 04/16/2008, -2/+5What's wrong with Houston and Atlanta?
- walkingdogs, on 04/16/2008, -1/+12Have you been to Houston? Multiple yearly floods, the nations worst pollution, 90+ degree weather with 90%+ humidity for 9 months, Terrible road system, more pickups than one could ever care to see, massive evangelical population, do I need to say more? It's the armpit of this country and you would do well to never live there. I say this as someone who has been there and done that.
- MRintheKeys, on 04/16/2008, -1/+2Atlanta has got a lot of ghetto
- RoshanK, on 04/16/2008, -0/+2My parent's decided to move from New York City to Houston. Here's one thing to keep in mind. If you like clean tasting water, a city like environment and an easy way to get around, DON"T MOVE TO HOUSTON. Plus I never wanted to move in the first place. ***** housing in New York is way too expensive.
- redcup27, on 04/16/2008, -1/+2I wish more people thought as you do. Atlanta wouldn't have a population over 5 million and we wouldn't have a water problem. Maybe you can convince the 3.5 million northerners who moved here over the last 15 years to go home?
- jcm267, on 04/16/2008, -2/+5What's wrong with Houston and Atlanta?
- jcm267, on 04/16/2008, -0/+4Boston? Is it seriously there? I have a friend who is a Jr. DBA making low $80,000s in Boston, and he says that he can't afford to buy a decent place near the subway or commuter rail. He's paying $1200/month + utilities for a 700 sq foot 1 bedroom apartment within walking distance of the last stop of one of the subway lines.
You should be able to afford a decent house on $80,000 a year. Good luck doing that in Boston!- BurnTees, on 04/16/2008, -1/+1it all depends on where you live. a house on $80,000 in north jersey or NYC? good luck.
- jcm267, on 04/16/2008, -0/+5But you don't see Northern Jersey on this list do you?
- mcphatty, on 04/16/2008, -1/+11200/mo? Damn, I thought I was paying a lot for my crappy 2 bedroom at 825/mo
- tekiek, on 04/16/2008, -0/+3try $1600 for my Manhattan studio
- thebza451, on 04/16/2008, -0/+3i'm paying $1450 a month for 1 bedroom :( but i do live @ the beach & less than 3 miles from work, so there's the trade-off
- BurnTees, on 04/16/2008, -1/+1it all depends on where you live. a house on $80,000 in north jersey or NYC? good luck.
- TheUngod, on 04/16/2008, -0/+7It says Boston, but the actual town it's looking at is my town, Waltham. It's much cheaper out here and we're only 15 minutes from Boston. Access to the Pike and 95, lots of buses and commuter Rail, however no T. I only pay 800 a month in rent for my 1br apt.
- UMDirector, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1Sure its going to be super pricey if you want to live in downtown Boston...but outside Boston is nice too. I have friends who pay $1900 a month but have a huge and very nice 3 bedroom apartment right outside the very nice area of Hingham....with a balcony view of woods, including rabbits and birds. Only a 20 min drive to Boston (no traffic, about an hour with).
- thebza451, on 04/16/2008, -6/+6all those cities suck ass. i'll stay here in newport beach, so cal thanks.
- mungk, on 04/16/2008, -0/+5I wouldn't give up the banana stand either.
- Butros, on 04/17/2008, -0/+2except housing costs in OC have gone up 100% while salaries have gone up 20%. Fail!
- lennybird, on 04/16/2008, -2/+2Phoenix - homes like half the price of LA, awesome weather, not far from beach (6 hours, weekend trip), extremely well layed out, flat city with desert fun on the outskirts. Modern, clean (of course this depends sometimes), very efficient with traffic.
- TheUngod, on 04/16/2008, -0/+3From what I've heard, Phoenix will be experiencing massive growing pains soon. The infrastructure isn't growing as fast as the population, so schools and other services will be hurting in the not so far future. Of course, this is all speculation.
- 11oops, on 04/16/2008, -0/+2That can be said about nearly every city in the US though, from large metropolitans to smaller suburbs.
- CiXeL, on 04/16/2008, -1/+3six hours is not far from the beach?
- 11oops, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1Reread the comment I responded to.

- shootsfired, on 04/16/2008, -0/+4There is nothing awesome about 100 days above 100 degrees. 6 hours is quite a drive from the beach. Desert fun? Get real. This place is foreclosure hell....

- ep53, on 04/16/2008, -2/+41***** CNN and their ***** slideshows How hard is it to put everything on one page?
- Kershek, on 04/16/2008, -0/+8That way you load their banner ads 6 times instead of once and they get more revenue.
- Pandalume, on 04/16/2008, -8/+1It's the ***** easiest thing in the world dumbass. How hard is it to figure out that CNN's webpage is not there as a public service. It's there to make money and that is accomplished by showing you the largest number of ads possible. When you put up your excellent news website you can put everything on one page and we can all scroll happily through it. Until then please STFU.

- camel2021, on 04/16/2008, -1/+2you mean Cincinnati
- itsbob, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1Become a slumlord
- RHollister, on 04/16/2008, -1/+18Atlanta, Cleveland, Cincinnati ... no thanks
- slapded, on 04/16/2008, -1/+5homes are cheap there because people want out
- redcup27, on 04/16/2008, -0/+2The metro Atlanta area has consistently had several counties in the top 5 in population growth in the country for more than 15 years. I WISH people wanted out.
- slapded, on 04/16/2008, -1/+5homes are cheap there because people want out
- gl77, on 04/16/2008, -1/+5housing prices are absolutely ridiculous everywhere. Cleveland may be an exception. seriously....$350,000+ for a house?
- ethanpack, on 04/16/2008, -1/+2Actually, most Houston home prices are excellent.
- CSharpSauce, on 04/16/2008, -2/+1Well i must be getting a deal on the house i'm looking at for $166,900.....
- Kakemonster, on 04/16/2008, -1/+2W00T? Only $350k? Gief low low prices:D
- SillyRabbits, on 04/17/2008, -1/+2gl77, in some markets $350k won't even get you a 1 bedroom condo in the rough part of town.
- Kakemonster, on 04/17/2008, -1/+1And that is actually true where I live.
- gl77, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1well *****, then i guess that would be a good sign to move to another market.
- ssn697, on 04/16/2008, -2/+6Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, and Houston are 4 of the 6. Yeah, move THERE for the home prices!
- axeugene69, on 04/16/2008, -0/+8I think I'll just move to the mountains and rape goats. Can you get WiFi there?
- getrealnow, on 04/16/2008, -0/+2You gotta use the goats as signal boosters
- Icetype, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1I'm with ya. Well, on the mountains and Wifi parts.
- andrew522, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1suprisingly, yes. I've driven through the mountains in rural WV and PA with my laptop on netstumbler and there are a suprising amount of WiFi hotspots around the homes... and satellite dishes too. to be honest, the people who live there don't have much else to do.
but it won't be anywhere near the 15mb speed I have here in the suburbs of Columbus.
- BurnTees, on 04/16/2008, -7/+2first off, that website sux. 2nd, i'm surprised nyc isn't on there. i haven't really seen a decline at all in prices of apartments here.
- iamrussell, on 04/16/2008, -1/+1yeah but are any of them selling?
- imacbook, on 04/16/2008, -6/+3Buried as inaccurate. These might be the best places to buy a home in the USA, but there's a whole world outside of that recession struck hell hole.
- megaton, on 04/16/2008, -1/+18IT'S A TRAP!
- jeexbit, on 04/16/2008, -2/+9I'll stick with Seattle, thanks.
- Ryan166, on 04/16/2008, -5/+4Ya move to these cities and get your house routinely broken in to. Then comfort yourself knowing your home's price didn't drop the past month.
- Ephraim2007, on 04/16/2008, -0/+3uhhh, do they mean "places that had the most foreclosures and homes for sale from a bank, at 25 cents on the dollar "
- whandsfield, on 04/16/2008, -3/+8These places all suck, except Boston, which is snobby and expensive. I vote thumbs down on all these cities. I love where I live, but I ain't tellin' you, we don't want any more invaders (and I was one).
- ethanpack, on 04/16/2008, -3/+1Have you ever visited Houston?! Sure, our sports teams aren't the greatest, but for museums, sight-seeing, city and rural life, cost of living, no state income taxes - it can't be beat! As for the weather - well roll a die and take a guess.
- TheKingInYellow, on 04/16/2008, -1/+2houston's is great. i moved here right after katrina and fell in love. we tried to go back to nola to "help" but it is in a state of no return so we came back to houston to stay hopefully.
why are all of the pins in the sugarland area though? with all of the riffraff trickling in from southwest houston i'd stay as far away from sugarland as possible. i guess if you can afford a house in a secure gated community it's ok.- ethanpack, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1For me - as with most Houstonians - I work inside the loop. Since traffic sucks everywhere, I chose The Woodlands area since it had some great home prices, good living, good safety (I accidentally left my garage door and the home entry door inside the garage unlocked/open last night and thankfully nothing happened - need to double-check when I get home,) and plenty to do without *having* to go far.
In Houston, it's all about how much you're willing to tolerate on your commute and what you want in an urban area or a suburban or rural neighborhood/sub-division. I wouldn't live south of the loop if for no other reason than a greater hurricane (evacuation and damage) risk.
Glad to hear you like Houston - a lot of folks have big time misconceptions of Houston - and Texas.- TheKingInYellow, on 04/16/2008, -0/+2when we returned we were looking at several areas. i have relatives in tomball and kingwood. we looked at sugarland and the woodlands. i read too many forums about crime in sugarland and the commute on 45 to and from the woodlands seemed outrageously horrid so those got crossed out immediately.
i agree though, it's all about how much you're willing to tolerate. the hov helps out a lot!

- sinurgy, on 04/16/2008, -1/+2I've always been curious about Houston, Dallas and San Antonio because of the great housing deals. However, I went to Dallas a year ago to see the Cotton Bowl and I have never seen so many churches in my freakin life!! It really put me off to that place as I'm just not sure my Atheist like mindset would fit in there.
- ethanpack, on 04/16/2008, -0/+2People generally keep their beliefs to themselves in the major cities (and the surrounding metro areas.) Sure, you'll get a friend or someone you may have just met asking "Where do you go to church?" or "What's your home church?," but I haven't found a person that's been over-zealous in their attempts to get you to go to church with them or preach to you, convert you, or otherwise harass you or make you feel uncomfortable.
I think if you hold your beliefs to yourself and kindly decline from others, you'll be fine in Texas! The abundance of regular churches and mega-churches is crazy, but - lots of people fill the pews I suppose.

- UMDirector, on 04/16/2008, -1/+1Expensive...yes...but Boston snobby? Nope. My wife is from Virginia (AKA the friendly south) and says the people around Boston are the nicest people she has ever worked with....even our dudes in the toll booths on the highways are nice!

- Tommyhawk, on 04/16/2008, -1/+3Why would you want to move to a place where prices aren't going down as opposed to waiting for prices to come down and moving wherever you want to?
- Demonmonger, on 04/16/2008, -4/+7Those happen to be the top 5 places to be murdered also.
- TheKingInYellow, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1from what i remember there are 6 places listed in the article. however, with large populations comes large problems.
- CiXeL, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1explain the difference in murders between los angeles and miami. miami has far less people but far more murders.
- NJank, on 04/16/2008, -0/+9HEY! Baltimore is not on that list. Don't you dare give our title to one of these pansy cities. Or else I'll cut ya...
- TheKingInYellow, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1from what i remember there are 6 places listed in the article. however, with large populations comes large problems.
- Octosink, on 04/16/2008, -1/+2No, no, no, no, no, and no.
- pak314, on 04/16/2008, -0/+7How is the job market in those places?
- chadlewis76, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1As a software developer from Detroit, I can tell you that the job market is *insane* as long as you're in the right industry. I get several calls/emails weekly about job prospects, and my resume hasn't been active in over a year. My friends in IT don't seem to have any complaints either. Below average property prices and above average salaries in Oakland County FTW!
- CiXeL, on 04/16/2008, -1/+2i hear they're hiring like crazy in iraq too
- swiftheart, on 04/16/2008, -1/+1The article talks about Cincinnati in regards to it being a manufacturing town. In my mind it's a very corporate job place...headquarters for things like Procter and Gamble. Those jobs seem to be doing well.
And it's a gorgeous city/area. One of the prettiest in the East.

- rmad1949, on 04/16/2008, -3/+3I travel a lot. What a depressing list.
- Ellipson, on 04/16/2008, -1/+9I'm getting out of Cincinnati as soon as I can. There is absolutely no reason to live here; getting mugged on the way back from class is not outweighed by better housing market.
- Lixie, on 04/16/2008, -0/+5There's a reason there are no red lights on Vine street past dusk.
- GumbySock, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1qft
- andrew522, on 04/17/2008, -0/+2hehehe I was considering going to UC, and toured there. I heard the stories of Vine street and that side of campus...
but I settled on OSU. closer to home.
- Lixie, on 04/16/2008, -0/+5There's a reason there are no red lights on Vine street past dusk.
- slapded, on 04/16/2008, -3/+5title should read.... top 6 places to buy a home to be murdered in
- wbeavis, on 04/16/2008, -2/+2Of course home prices in these areas are going up. There is no place to go but up, from zero. Seriously, ever hear of the foreclosure crisis? I know that in Cleveland and Detroit the economy is weak. Jobs and whole industries are evaporating. This article makes no sense.
- forcedfx, on 04/16/2008, -1/+2Houston? God no. I went there on business for a week and hated it.
- TheKingInYellow, on 04/16/2008, -1/+2next time try coming to houston on vacation. go to the zoo, see a show. business trips mean taxiing around and eating dinners with associates. you don't get the full effect...but i guess that's true just about everywhere.
- unknownpoltroon, on 04/16/2008, -1/+5The best place to buy a house for the next 6 months : Rentville, USA.
- gh0st32, on 04/16/2008, -2/+6I think I will stay in Philly metro area. I can't live without Wawa's
- diggerphelps, on 04/16/2008, -1/+1damn, that brings back memories. grew up in mt airy.
- LogicBomB, on 04/16/2008, -1/+5Canada's doing pretty good...
- musters, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1Buying property in Toronto seems to be a solid investment.
- mwdcodeninja, on 04/16/2008, -1/+3Um, hello! Austin! Our housing market here is quite strong (my mother is a Realtor) We have 14 Condos going in downtown, and our foreclosure rate is one of the lowest in the country. There is alot of work to be had, plenty of atmosphere, and the city is just in a surge.
Come to Austin. Great town. Good music. and SXSW at no travel expense!- TheKingInYellow, on 04/16/2008, -2/+1yeh but austin is so snooty...it's a visit place not a stay place. austin may have a great housing market but the job market is horrible (at least for what i do).
- chuckDontSurf, on 04/16/2008, -1/+1Shhhh!! What are you doing?? We don't need more people moving here!
- mwdcodeninja, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1Ya, never mind me. Listen to The King In Yellow... were all snobs here. Rolling in money. Looking down on the little guy. Afterall, he's right. There's not a big job market for Ass Crack Exfoliators here... That's all up in New York.
- getrealnow, on 04/16/2008, -0/+2but we have Kerby lane and Alamo drafthouse! =/
- TomT223, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1Keep Austin Weird
- claye, on 04/16/2008, -4/+0I think they misspelled the "BEST" part - the job industries in Detroit and Cincinnati are going down the drain which means the standard of living will go to pot. Those are probably the main 2 cities (along with the city in California that went bankrupt) that I wouldn't move to if I was paid to do it.
- HanSolo69, on 04/16/2008, -3/+5In the ghettoooooo
- rowlodge, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1so far so good here in oklahoma. thats all that counts.
- lornali, on 04/16/2008, -1/+1Thanks for telling.
- Shivetya, on 04/16/2008, -1/+2Wrong, Atlanta is still falling. In fact our foreclosure rate for this month will be a record.
Builders are still dropping prices and adding incentives. I can buy my same home in my neighborhood for 30K less than when I bought mine and mine was cheap beforehand! - marv1983, on 04/16/2008, -3/+2They all suck as place to live!
- Willravel, on 04/16/2008, -3/+3WRONG, In the next 12 months it will be San Diego and San Jose where the prices go up the most. But over the next 36 months? Move to Europe. The prime bubble is in danger of bursting and now is not the time to make long term investments in real estate.
- jedmed, on 04/16/2008, -1/+2Beantown makes sense as they are already posting a positive bounce.
- RhodesSkolar, on 04/16/2008, -0/+4Rather than miss out on this one time offer. I called a realtor and asked her to line me up with a house in each of those cities.
- Pherdnut, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1It's sad that people didn't get how funny that was.
- tibs, on 04/16/2008, -0/+3More like "6 places I would not want to live"
