- lucy22, on 07/16/2009, -3/+60Frankly I find advertising annoying, so I wonder how much they paid the 66% to say this.
- mwalker05, on 07/16/2009, -4/+3966% of consumers are also retarded
- SanchoMandoval, on 07/16/2009, -0/+21Eh. I have a DVR, AdBlock on my browser, listen to my iPod instead of the radio, I take in as few ads as possible. I hate how with my cell phone bill, and most of my bills, half the bill is going to advertising to get *other people* to sign up for the product - a service I don't benefit from one bit as a customer. Doesn't that bother anyone else? The point of advertising is to get you to buy the advertised product, not to make the best choice for you... it just seems like a bad idea for consumers.
- Magnes, on 07/16/2009, -5/+23Breaking story: at least 66% of the population are morons.
- Niocan, on 07/16/2009, -0/+14Do Ads get you down? Do you feel insulted that we bombard you with blatant bias 24/7?
Then talk to your doctor about ***** (TriSheepleDiLobotomy)
;) - roxgod666, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1066% of the population is not retarded, they are just morbidly obese and get hard over the nonstop taco bell commercials.
- litsgt, on 07/16/2009, -1/+11case in point why our country is going into *****-can status. this is probably the same 66% of ppl who couldnt pay their mortgage and the same 66% of ppl who dont read books.
- MMusick, on 07/16/2009, -1/+10It has become entertaining because everyone has become so good at blocking it out.
- yocouchdigga, on 07/16/2009, -0/+9"By the way if anyone here is in advertising or marketing... kill yourself.
No, no, no it's just a little thought. I'm just trying to plant seeds. Maybe one day, they'll take root - I don't know. You try, you do what you can. Kill yourself." - Bill Hicks - gamerbambi, on 07/16/2009, -1/+10According to those Conservatives, that makes you Anti-American
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -2/+11ads? Who looks at ads anymore that's so 1980's.
- nmffffd9, on 07/16/2009, -3/+10The other 34% must have never seen Billy Mays.
- stormspire, on 07/16/2009, -0/+6I think the idea is that Billy gave 110%
- jeltringham, on 07/16/2009, -0/+6RIP.
- Sanfranon5, on 07/16/2009, -1/+7Nice report by "Adweek" on a survey done by their parent company.
I'm sure the utmost care was taken as to not skew the unbiased and noble findings. - tomarocco, on 07/16/2009, -0/+6Stockholm Syndrome
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -1/+7Well this was probably the most biased and flawed research ever. the survey asked "Advertising often gets my attention AND is entertaining" It's like asking Violent murders get my attention AND is entertaining.
And loaded remarks like "Advertising stimulates competition, which leads to
better products and lower prices" The questions never put ads in a bad light and are not at all neutral. The research made it's conclusions based on strategic confirmation bias. - xxmjumpman23xx, on 07/16/2009, -1/+6***** advertisements. I use my DVR to skip ads as much as possible and of course ABP in Firefox.
- Hermmunster, on 07/16/2009, -0/+5I find all advertising as offensive. The mindscape manipulation is dehumanizing.
- depro9, on 07/16/2009, -1/+6Haven't had to view an ad in a few years now, thanks net hackers.
"Buy our *****, buy our *****, buy our *****!!!!!!!111" <--- ***** you! ;) - sondatch, on 07/16/2009, -0/+5Your math skills barely exceed your wit.
- boozedrinker, on 07/16/2009, -2/+7100% of consumers say that bacon is delicious.
- dalittle, on 07/16/2009, -1/+6I heard an ad exec one time say that advertising is like spraying cockroaches. The more you do it the less effective it becomes.
- peestandingup, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4This just in. 66% of US consumers are retards.
Need proof. Just tune in to any network channel on any given night. - zapass, on 07/16/2009, -2/+6lol
with tivo and adblock+ i haven't seen a single ad in ages - Gizza, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4I bet if a Muslim were to try bacon even they would find it delicious.
- esteskid, on 07/16/2009, -2/+6I disagree. I find most ads annoying, actually a large majority, but it does make me appreciate good advertising when I see it.
Also advertising is a ridiculously important part of our service oriented capitalist system, and becoming more important all the time. - caramba421, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4Yeah...that's the ticket.
If only someone could come up with something where it was, say, an entire 30 minute show format dedicated to the selling of a product. Like a commercial, but providing more info.
With all that time on their hands, they could probably showcase all of the benefits of said product, and highlight the downfalls of competing products. They might even use some of the time to throw in extra "value added" items to sweeten the deal.
Let's say, for instance, I was selling a hypothical oxygen activated detergent. I could not only show the still shot results of the cleaning power this product offers versus its competitors, but I could actually perform said cleaning live on TV, and show the results immediately to the audience. Perhaps even also a live studio audience.
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
This extended 30 minute "Commerceformation," I'll call it, would offer several opportunities to show a phone number that audience/customers could call and order the products directly from the confort of their own homes without ever having to venture into one of those scary supermarkets.
I think I'm onto something here! - miggyb, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3I honestly can't remember the last time I saw an advertisement for a book. Enlighten me.
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3Advertising which is entertaining and clever and relevant to things your are interested in, without disrupting a task you are doing is a good thing.
Pays for free (or certainly subsidised entertainment), and provides information about other stuff you may enjoy or desire.
It's the rest that sucks, and the rest seems to be the growing portion.
I Know TV audiences are declining but how the hell is the net the future of advertising? even the semi relevant stuff i ignore, I am never going to click an ad into a site and buy something. The best you companies should hope for is that I become aware of your products existence. - jdhayes, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3If TV ads are designed to be entertaining, do they result in creating consumer behavior? Do I drink more product x? Shop at store y? Do I remember the product or service associated with the ad? "Herding cats" was from whom? Those that make ads entertaining are best to maintain consistency. We all know the Clydesdale horses are from Budweiser. They have been consistent at using this brand. The one-time funny ad is a waste of money IMO.
- MrColdheart, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3Advertisements are entertaining only if they are designed or produced to be as such.
Please don't be suckers people. - Kyzzyxx, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3It makes me human. ***** your labels
- D3koy, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3Know what ads are cool? The ones that are 29 seconds of boobs, and 1 second of "buy _____"
I don't think I've ever bought something because of those ads, but if I have to stare at something for 30 second in between my TV show, it might as well be boobs. - D2Much, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3I find advertising from huge corporations to be annoying such as mcdonalds, rather persistant, you see 2 commercials of the same company within the same "commercial break" it makes me think about deceiving it really is
- JDanner3, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2I love the Geico caveman commercials and the Dos Equis commercials. I don't want Geico yet somehow I do want to buy some Dos Equis.
- Treshnell, on 07/16/2009, -3/+5The Messing with Sasquatch commercials are pretty great.
- msaleem, on 07/16/2009, -4/+6In other news, 66% of consumers are clinically retarded.
- alexkreuz, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_os.asp
OSX numbers barely move .. the trend has been there since all those spam commercials .. - alexdaws, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2but still lol
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2you beat me to it!
- Tipperzack, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2To think badly of people that like ads are stupid is stupid thinking.
Many ads are well written, made, and displayed.
Look at the digg main story board. A lot of them are just about ads.
Like the best billboards, bus ads, business card, tv ads, and so on
So don't mock people because they enjoy well made ads. - LoudMusic, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2I haven't had subscription television in over a year. People talk about "that cool commercial" they saw the other day. I have no idea what they're talking about.
And my life is improved because of it. "Cut the cable!"
And while you're at it, ditch your land line.
Now, go for a walk. - inactive, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2KFC has chicken and corn. I know so because their ad jingle is "KFC has chicken and corn"
- miggyb, on 07/16/2009, -3/+5If you seek it out, it's not advertising.
- jcrs, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2We can only hope.
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -1/+3A movie trailer is still advertising for the movie.
- guttersniper, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2I kind of wrote a little manifesto:
Every piece of media that we consume and do not pay for directly is provided to us by advertisers. All they ask in return is that we consider their products the next time we make a purchase. In this world of free media, I think that it's important that we live up to our side of the bargain and do so.
Currently, advertisers think they are tricking us. They think the constant repetition of the superiority of their products makes us actually believe their claims. That's mostly *****. Usually what motivates us is simply that effective advertising makes consumers associate positive feelings with the product. This process usually occurs subconsciously. I think we have a responsibility to enhance this effect by consciously selecting products based on the effectiveness of their advertising.
Recently, Dos Equis beer started running a series of commerials which starred a character known as the Most Interesting Man in the World. Though I had never heard of the beer before, I went out and bought it. I knew that the fact it had an awesome commercial did not make it good beer - though it turned out to be okay though a little watery - but I felt I should show my gratitude to the company for entertaining me. The proper display of gratitude is the foundation of morality and it made me feel good to reward Dos Equis by drinking their beer.
But you must not only reward companies who directly entertain through their ads, but also buy from those whose advertisements pay for the media we enjoy. Supporting those who advertise during your favourite programs or on your favourite websites helps to create better media in the future by ensuring that there is a profit motive incentivising the creation of quality media. If fans of shows like Arrested Development or Firefly would have committed themselves to favouring the advertisement backers of those programs there is a good chance those programs would never have died out. In the modern world, many of our probems could be solved with the proper application of purchasing power.
Of course, the sword can cut both ways. It is also important that we punish companies with dull, offensive, or, worst of all, intrusive advertising. The next time you see a billboard ruining a view or are pulled away from web surfing by a full screen advertisement start an impromptu boycott against the company and ensure they do not gain from their behaviour. And while I do not normally condone trying to limit the media choices of others, if a favourite show of mine was cancelled in favour of an inane reality show, I'd make sure to stay away from its advertisers.
To be fair, you can't be expected to buy inferior products because of good advertisement. But I think that we should all commit to, when we are looking to buy something we start by looking at the companies we approve of first and we look at the companies we disapprove of last. Remember, these days advertisers are the most prolific patrons of the arts and we can use our purchases to ensure they use that power well. -
