- shoppingkart, on 02/13/2009, -3/+74John McCain greeted me at the door today!
- Yage2006, on 02/13/2009, -0/+54Well none of those 5 things could be considered a skeleton.
- hilomike, on 02/14/2009, -0/+371 - Every week, over one-third of the U.S. population visits a Wal-Mart
2- Hillary Clinton was a member of the Board of Directors for six years
3- They pioneered a number of discount retail concepts
4- Only one organization in the world employs more people than Wal-Mart
5- They prefer part-time employees - wacked, on 02/13/2009, -7/+40Here's a much more useful source of info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Wal-Mart
Let's not forget that much of their ***** is still made by children in sweatshops in third world countries. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. - ferretpants, on 02/13/2009, -2/+34I hate lists that assume you don't know anything. The few things on that list that aren't fairly common knowledge aren't all that surprising.
- inactive, on 02/13/2009, -14/+46just when you thought hillary couldnt get more evil you find out she also worked for walmart
- agentinfinite, on 02/13/2009, -10/+41I hate Walmart so much
- ZombieSociety, on 02/14/2009, -0/+25To destroy Wal-Mart, you must destroy the heart. It's back by the TVs.
- twiztidsinz, on 02/13/2009, -0/+23Is this going to be as accurate as "5 Things You Didn't Know: AK-47"?
- shujin, on 02/13/2009, -0/+23Really hate when lists assume i don't know something
- alanocu, on 02/13/2009, -2/+24And celebrities like Taylor Swift and Jaclyn Smith - who sell their clothing lines at Walmart and K-mart would sooner be caught dead than wearing those same clothes.
- YME1280, on 02/13/2009, -1/+18two pages is fine. advertisers need money. 5 pages, now that's where i get pissy
- twinklyJesus, on 02/14/2009, -7/+21It's called capitalism, get ***** over it.
If you don't like it, vote with your wallet and shop elsewhere. I do.
Nothing in that list is illegal, immoral or wrong. It is their privilege to do business how ever they wish, as long as they don't break the law. when they have broken the law, they get busted for it. No one should even think that the government or anyone else should be able to force them to allow unions, or pay benefits. If the market for job seekers demanded it, they would willingly do all those things, just to get employees. - judahhertz, on 02/13/2009, -11/+24I definitely knew about #5, which is wrong. If they're on of the largest corporate powerhouses in the world, they should be able to pay for insurance and other necessary benefits.
As for number one, that's just sad. - dikky, on 02/13/2009, -4/+16it's wrong because they know if they pay their employees as little as they do, they'll qualify for social assistance, which means they are relying on tax payers to fund their health care.
- Samurai77, on 02/14/2009, -2/+14You could put in the Guggenheim and the Smithsonian, it'd still be Arkansas.
- DerGeist, on 02/14/2009, -0/+12Hey, that list was useful! Who knew the AK-47 was "a gun, capable of firing bullets"?
- hydrodev, on 02/13/2009, -1/+13Skeletons? That was a bit misleading. I was expecting something more like they kill employees who want to resign or something. Not a bunch of random LESS than evil facts about the company. WTF was that?
- anonymousmedic, on 02/13/2009, -5/+17Bawww. Go pay your extra money to shop somewhere else.
"5 - They prefer Part-time employees"
Well, no one holds a gun to their face and says "Work for us", now do they? - shujin, on 02/13/2009, -1/+12Most of this is either obvious or not terribly surprising. I mean, honestly who didn't know Hillary Clinton was on their board, hasn't that been in the news a dozen times in the past year?
- blofeld9999, on 02/14/2009, -0/+10He would have said "Welcome to Wal-Mart, my friends".
- killahwhale, on 02/13/2009, -20/+30"NWAworker says:
I just want to say that I absolutely love what Walmart has done in our country. It gives everyone an opportunity to afford goods at low prices. Take Flat Panel TVs for instance. It outpriced everyone in the market last Christmas and lowered them to under $1000. That is what I call astonishing. I also live in Fayetteville, AR, 20 minutes south of Bentonville (home of Walmart Headquarters) and I cannot tell you what great things it has done for our area. We are the 6th fastest growing area in America and have an airport with direct flights to over 20 destinations, including LA, New York City, Washington DC, Miami, and Chicago. We are getting the Crystal Bridges Museum of Art, funded by the Waltons. It is amazing that Arkansas is moving up in the world. Thanks to the Waltons!"
STFU. - xprojects, on 02/14/2009, -3/+12Why compete? Who the hell wants to start a business selling toilet paper and other random *****? And if Wal-Mart wasn't there, you'd be competing with others like Target, K-Mart, Shaw's, Stop & Shop, 7-11, Store 24, Tedeschi's and every ***** gas station on the planet.
As for your sweat shops in China, that's sort of China's problem. Unfortunately civility has yet to make it's way over there, and it doesn't seem like it's much of our business since they consistently shut us and our "liberating" ways out.
I don't shop at Wal-Mart, but then again it doesn't ***** matter because the dude at the Lindenette (corner store on Linden St.) is peddling the same damn brands made by the same broke Chinese kids. - Samurai77, on 02/14/2009, -1/+10It's been years for me.
- Biscuitz, on 02/14/2009, -3/+12First, askmen.com sucks.
Second, this list sucks.
Third, askmen.com sucks.
=) - cog77, on 02/13/2009, -1/+95- They prefer part-time employees
I dunno, this seems like pretty common sense if you know Walmart. Maybe "4 Thing you didnt know about Walmart" just didn't have enough meat on it. - lisaawesome, on 02/13/2009, -4/+12Number 5 claims that insurance premiums are "whopping." How is 80 dollars a month for individual coverage whopping when the next cheapest I have ever found through other jobs is 100 dollars?
- Ryan_KW, on 02/14/2009, -0/+8How are you today my friends?
- BrewBeau, on 02/14/2009, -3/+11Uh-huh. Well, if it's so easy for any company to compete with Wal-Mart, then why aren't there thousands of companies doing that? When people would rather stick their heads up their asses and pretend that Wal-Mart doesn't run sweat shops in China just to save themselves pennies on useless crap, then it's the customers that "suck total ass". It's only a matter of time before people start to wake up, though. It's kind of like when they found the lead paint on children's toys. There was hysteria about not buying Chinese products. Well, guess what? It's our own fault as consumers who just have to live beyond our means.
- Ymeg, on 02/14/2009, -2/+9I find it funny... no, terrifying that people scream and shout at Wal-Mart because they "aren't treating their employees right,"but they never look at the person who voluntarily spends their working for them.
- Curvearth, on 02/14/2009, -3/+10Damn you consumers, for choosing wrong! Why can't you just pay more to keep inferior business models in play?
Now that I think of it, I already am doing that. Car bailout, anyone?
Note that Wal-Mart didn't need a bailout. It's companies like that which keep the engine of the economy running while everything else collapses. - paulmer2003, on 02/14/2009, -0/+7I'm ***** tired of these lameass 5 things you didn't know (or any other article) from askmen. ***** publication.
These articles should be called, "Five Things our Ignorant Readership Don't Know" - 12916studios, on 02/14/2009, -0/+7I started working at the Electronics Department at my local Walmart back in December. I get paid $9.70 an hour and have yet to have any issues with them. I don't see what it is people find so bad about Walmart.
- BrewBeau, on 02/14/2009, -8/+15Why would they need to do that when they run every other retail shop out of business, forcing the workforce to work there?
- MicrosoftBob, on 02/14/2009, -0/+6I know what you mean; I just can't Equate it to any other store.
- spiderman222, on 02/13/2009, -1/+7Stop shopping there if you don't like it.
I dare you...go one month without stepping foot in a Walmart. What if everyone did this? - fugazied, on 02/14/2009, -1/+7People opposed unionised labor then are suprised that corporations prefer part-time lowly paid employees without rights and benefits?
- hawarkarem, on 02/13/2009, -1/+7By the way, its "Britain's" National Health Service...not just England's.
- atruevoice, on 02/14/2009, -2/+8Are you serious? It destroys smalls business and local economies, it drives down labour cost and living standards for the producing countries (China), its actions have a huge negative impact on the environment, its the leading entity spearheading the fascist corporate globalization movement... there are so many reasons why they cause suffering in the world. Do a search for "Walmart - High Cost of Low Prices" to get filled in a little.
- inactive, on 02/14/2009, -7/+13Whoopie ***** doo.
You're so special. - DrLeePhD, on 02/14/2009, -1/+7because I'm a meat cutter for Fred Meyer, a union competitor to wal-mart superstores.
My health benefits cover lots more than wal-mart's and cost $12/month for my whole household, or just me for $9.
We also get a decent retirement plan which doesn't involve greeting people.
http://www.ufcw555.com/ - macfan93, on 02/14/2009, -0/+6These weren't skeletons, they were just not scary facts. Pointless article. buried.
- xprojects, on 02/13/2009, -12/+17Yeah, ***** that guy for being able to finally afford decent products and being able to visit a museum.
***** his opinion, ***** his town, and ***** the world. Anyone who thinks that a gigantically successful company is any bit good should just STFU already. - r0g3r, on 02/13/2009, -2/+7I think a part time worker who has nothing invested in the company and no benefits is much less likely to put any effort into their job. This is why you can barely get good service anywhere anymore, because so many companies get out of giving their employees proper benefits and pay by working them only part time.
Also, the size of the standing Chinese army is scary. - AManWithNoName, on 02/14/2009, -0/+57. The heart is hidden somewhere in the electronics department, near the TVs.
- danconia, on 02/14/2009, -0/+5And yet 1/3 of all Americans go buy something from Wal-Mart every week. You can't blame Wal-Mart for everything without acknowledging that the general consuming public is complicit.
"Predatory pricing", BTW = consumer saving money. Ironic how we get pissed at oil companies for price "gouging" and then when someone does the opposite we accuse them of "predatory" pricing. Americans have a knack for using corporations as scapegoats. - Curvearth, on 02/14/2009, -5/+10Well, at least you've got an easy way out of cognitive dissonance. Just yell, "STFU!"
By the way, you're an idiot. - Clbull, on 02/14/2009, -0/+5At least it wasn't more than 2 pages.
- hazello, on 02/13/2009, -0/+5Wow, I didn't know that I didn't know those things
