- Pyehole, on 12/01/2008, -2/+583Nice to read some good news for a change.
- dlm85, on 12/01/2008, -6/+429Nice. That makes me happy. Successful companies take care of their employees first. I wish some greedy CEOs would read this story.
- spidur1, on 12/01/2008, -2/+341Wow, I can just see some CEOs from GM, A.I.G. etc... just saying to themselves. "Wow, what kind of idiots were running that company? Who just gives bonuses to stupid commoners when they could have $60Million to themselves instead of $30Million. Employees should only get paid market value. Now, off to DC to beg for a loan..."
- jsdieorksw, on 12/01/2008, -3/+245Way better than a subscription to the jelly-of-the-month club,
Hallelujah, Holy *****! - Smokeydabear, on 12/01/2008, -3/+160It took "balls" for that company to do that for their employees.
- shogan191, on 12/01/2008, -1/+157Great and good for them. As it should be.
- Vadi0, on 12/01/2008, -0/+142Impressive.
- redcolumbine, on 12/01/2008, -3/+138YES! I love seeing good news on Digg!
- inactive, on 12/01/2008, -2/+128I can say honestly that although I won't see a dime of that money it makes me feel very happy to see people in a privileged position helping the little guy, an example to all those companies who hand out bonuses to their CEOs when they could help the employees who actually need the money and do most of the work.
This is a very good way to motivate your employees. - gerrylazlo, on 12/01/2008, -2/+106Sorry, but this is spreading the wealth around and must therefore be shunned, from what I've been told.
- dshPls, on 12/01/2008, -8/+94I don't think you know what capitalism is about... a more correct definition is the freedom to do what you want with your money, not necessarily helping anyone in the process.
- Goochman, on 12/01/2008, -0/+84Here's the rare example where an owner realizes that their million plus dream was created by more than 1 person.
Great story - and kudos to the family. - inactive, on 12/01/2008, -2/+67I left corporate America to take a job as the IT Manager at an small, family owned business this year. I will never go back to being a badge number.
- NegativeDigg, on 12/01/2008, -6/+70You can change 230 lives with $6.6 million dollars. A single person in wall street gets a $50-100 million dollar bonus.
- diggum85, on 12/01/2008, -2/+62giving away that much money during a recession takes balls of steel...wait!
- phydeaux70, on 12/01/2008, -1/+55Dugg for the reference to the greatest Christmas movie around.
- MLGLies, on 12/02/2008, -0/+48Excellent comment citizen782. I'm glad to see you're just not another guy with a number.
Oh wait.... - sgxyay, on 12/01/2008, -0/+44Last year my employer gave us a bonus week off. Without pay....
- BlueAyez, on 12/01/2008, -3/+43Employers with a conscience? Unheard of.
- burrgrinder, on 12/01/2008, -2/+41I thought it was about who owned the most ladders.
- krabat, on 12/01/2008, -1/+35Where's the Tylenol?
- lordwow, on 12/01/2008, -0/+33A local furniture company here in MA, Jordan's Furniture, did something similar when they got bought out. They gave each employee $1k for each year they had worked there. More companies need to treat their employees with the respect and the compensation they deserve, especially when the company becomes so profitable.
- bjos144, on 12/02/2008, -0/+31i dont know that balls had much bearing on the decision.
- digmystuff, on 12/01/2008, -4/+34tis the season
- 380nm, on 12/01/2008, -0/+30Happy emloyes will work better and harder. Most CEOs think they can "get the most out of someone" if you let them work in total fear. It seams so strange to me that most of them can't (or don't want to) realise that a happy employe who loves his job will do much more (and much better) in his job.
At least some got it right.. and that makes me smile :) - Smokeydabear, on 12/01/2008, -2/+32Sounds like someone didn't get a bonus last year, Mr. Grumpypants.
- PoopOnPaul, on 12/01/2008, -2/+29It's a Festivus miracle!
- kingjaydub, on 12/01/2008, -2/+29I’m very impressed. It’s good to see that there are companies out there thinking about more than the almighty dollar. This gives me a little faith in mankind.
- Disruptpwnt, on 12/01/2008, -2/+29^^ Someone needs to learn sarcasm 101.
- AcousticBoom, on 12/01/2008, -0/+26Time to pass this one around the office. Maybe we'll get more than a $10 gift card to subway this year (doubtful).
- strangewill, on 12/01/2008, -2/+25The employees are what made the sale possible, in true capitalistic fashion, they're entitled to a cut for their hard work.
It's a good company that knew where it's values and power was kept, and shows their employees that they are important. - chadsmith729, on 12/01/2008, -1/+23This was on the front page I think Sat or Friday. I don't remember which, dugg again because it's just sooo impressive that the company did that!
- System6, on 12/01/2008, -0/+22I have no use for ball bearings, but have a sudden urge to purchase some from this company.....(Sorry for the double comments!)
- Tehrab, on 12/01/2008, -2/+22Christmas Vacation should really be on 24 hour loop instead of Ralphie and his incessant droning about that damn Red-Rider. At least Christmas Story delivers in the end and Ralphie actually shoots his eye out.
- publiclurker, on 12/01/2008, -0/+20Do you mean they are going to deduct from salaried employees paychecks? I strongly doubt that's legal.
- inactive, on 12/02/2008, -0/+20I even dugg that myself.
- omgbanana, on 12/01/2008, -0/+19Funny that, the article says the bonuses were handed out 3 months ago.
- Crosshare, on 12/01/2008, -0/+18Many of us have questioned the same thing.
- snurfle, on 12/01/2008, -2/+20Yeah.
You're right.
This really is a sad story.
What a kick in the nuts to those employees who are to stupid to know what to do wi...
Wait.
You know what?
>Shut the ***** up, Barakalypse. - publiclurker, on 12/01/2008, -0/+17You're lucky. I worked for a family owned company where I was unable to get any sort of raise for 3 years, allegedly due to bad sales. When I found out that the reason was actually that they decided to go for the high end appliances in their new McMansion, I left for another company at almost 50% more money. In a way, it was fun watching the rest of their employees jump ship after me. In the end, they had to sell out to their main competitor.
- crhein, on 12/01/2008, -1/+18If only everyone could be so lucky to work for a company as benevolent as Peer Bearing
- badenglishihave, on 12/02/2008, -1/+18Right on. Technically, capitalism is fueled by greed i.e. individual ambition for ones own financial gain.
However, as this story shows a great byproduct of capitalism is kindness and appreciation. This is something you don't get when a larger entity chooses to redistribute the wealth on their terms. This is called government intervention and it messes up capitalism.
There are a few greedy people who keep all of their money. But others show that capitalism can be a great system if only we take time to care about others. - ncc74656m, on 12/01/2008, -1/+18Almost wanted to cry reading this. This is touching that a company would recognize the contribution and commitment of its employees, especially when the long-time owners are "cashing out," and in light of the financial crisis. THIS is what company loyalty is supposed to mean.
- spidur1, on 12/01/2008, -1/+17Of course. They shouldn't even think of doing that now. But when a company like Exxon makes a 100B in profit this past year, I doubt they give any of it to the workers.
- Kronos6948, on 12/01/2008, -1/+17It's still $24k they didn't have. I'd be happy with half of that.
- inactive, on 12/01/2008, -0/+15Capitalism needs to be balanced with not being a dick, and this company certainly succeeded!
- ozroy, on 12/01/2008, -2/+17My housemate works for Barclays bank in London. She is no longer getting a Christmas party because the tight arse bastards are worried about what their shareholders will think! That sort of ***** just pisses me off.
I'm glad there are some people out there who appreciate and respect their employees. - nesagwa, on 12/01/2008, -0/+14Wait, you guys get bonuses?
- centran, on 12/01/2008, -0/+13If you read the article then you would know that they sold the company and the former owners decieded to spread the wealth. Still very impressive.
The best part is that this is truly a bonus. Even though the company was sold everyone will still keep their jobs. -
