- allaboutdatiki, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4And most importantly ... learn and make all the contacts you can at the conference, then come home and quit.
Cast down your shackles! - DanGleesacks, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3All that and I still wouldn't be able to go, because my boss is tighter than a ducks arse!
- punchinelli, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The business-lingo really works; I've been in a lot of meetings where the entire conversations consisted of "MBA-speak" and the group members complimented the speaker afterwards (e.g. administer an architecturally sound infrastructure of enterprise-wide business value with service level management via vested best practice methodology and value-added delivery of key blah blah blah blah)
- jcyprich, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2What about 41 ways to NOT go to a conference. :)
- litkaj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1PubCon is great. I was out there last year, had a blast, and learned a lot.
- brufleth, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Most conferences aren't about video games or movies. Most are about boring crap.
A stained bed in a cheap motel/hotel is hardly as inviting as my own bed (especially my own bed with my fiancee in it).
Eating out gets old after about five minutes of horrible conversation or having to eat out alone.
While you might spend a week at a conference including business dinners and such you will probably not get over time.
Many conferences are not in particularly great locations and even if they are you probably won't have much time to enjoy said location. - covertbadger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It wasn't Jack. The Fight Club narrator is unnamed, in both the book and the film. The whole "I am Jack's blahblahblah" is a snowclone from the Reader's Digest magazines he finds, not an indication of his actual name.
- digghasnoethics, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Not sure many of these are really a good idea. Making it obvious to everyone that you've been on a jolly isn't a smart move. Instead concentrate on getting one or two good 'networking' opportunities that you can explore out of the conference for new customers or partnerships. That's real value that the boss will understand.
- madrona, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1All good ideas. I once really hyped a conference, offered ways to cut the cost, and got to go, but I didn't do a good job of selling the benefits once I got back--never got to go again.
And the nice thing about these ideas: not only do they give the appearance of success, many of them actually provide some benefit for your company. - Mudcrutch, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Going to Adobe Max.. going to be a great time. :)
- ani625, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Feeding Your Inner Geek ? I don't think so
- ashutoshsusheel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0wat to do after dig it
- DeadSkinMask, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Conferences are overrated anyways...
- celeryuk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I loved that article. And the BS generator was great, like a cartoon version of out meetings at work. My only problem with the article was this....
With all that proper conference work, is there any time for tequilla, gambling, partying etc...?! - Dested, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2I believe his name was Jack.
- Lugano, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0How exactly do you know how tight a duck's arse is...?
- snowbooch, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2that corporate ***** generator is priceless!
- randfish, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Brett - big fan of this post :) I think conference organizers for years to come will be pointing back to this to help their attendees justify the expense.
- kensavage, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1where we're you 2 weeks ago with this article when I got turned down over and over to goto SES San Jose 2007?
- VeniceCA, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0The reality is that PubCon is money well invested for most companies. Even if their employees are hanging out at Playboy parties, it's all "research."
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0I'm so glad I'm not an office slave. I'm so glad I'm not bossed around all day by the bossman. What an embarrassing, low existence.
