- Slydevil01, on 10/11/2007, -59/+393Great, all we need are more idiots living their lives through hollywood movie values.
"Kiss in the rain"
Oh please.
"33. Stop watching the news. It's depressing and useless. If you're a news junky, this may be difficult. I haven't watch TV news or read a newspaper regularly in about two years. It hasn't hurt me a bit. Anything important, my mom tells me about."
Anyone who lives in ignorance to the world's problems because they find it too "depressing" gets my knuckles imprinted on their face. This fact alone is precisely what's wrong with a lot of modern thinking.
Empathy is humankind's greatest talent. Use it properly, and you'll realise what's important.....and it won't be listening to this *****. - coldphoenix, on 10/11/2007, -20/+198I personally don't watch the news, because i'm allergic to *****.
- moojj, on 10/11/2007, -3/+147I'm going outside because the internet told me to.
- captinherb, on 10/11/2007, -4/+139FTA "21 Touch humanity."
I got arrested for that once... - Savor, on 10/11/2007, -3/+116A wise hippie once said, "time you enjoy wasting is not wasted."
Indeed. - timo1023, on 10/11/2007, -12/+98FTA: "10. Pull away from Internet."
That's about as ignorant as saying "don't read". - silverchrysalis, on 10/11/2007, -3/+88she just hollers down the basement stairs:
"hey, dumb little man, someone blew something up again today! oh, and there's another missing white girl!"
dlm:
"thanks, mom! can i get some more cheez whiz? thanks, you're the best!" - someguy07x, on 10/11/2007, -11/+86Great, more people telling me what I should do to make my life worth living. You know what? ***** you. If playing video games makes me happy what right do you have to tell me that it is the wrong thing to do. I'll make my own decisions about my own life, and while staying inside is not my idea of a life, give me the freedom to decide what I want to do.
"What? You play video games? I like to hike outdoors therefore my life is worth more than yours."
Get bent. - RpgActioN, on 10/11/2007, -9/+80This list is one of the most generalized, cliched, and otherwise redundantly obvious (where it isn't intolerably trite and stupid) one's I've seen in a while. Good job.
- berb, on 10/11/2007, -18/+76That was a hell of a lame list.
"Love other people!"
"Kiss in the rain!"
"Play with the children!"
"Find spirituality!"
Does it get any *****? - somnambulator, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4740. Don't give in to the temptation to make a list that finishes on a round number.
- oxdeltaxo, on 10/11/2007, -9/+53A lot of you, are missing the point this guy is trying to get across. How many of you have actually pulled away from the net for more than a day? a week? a month? Same thing with tv. The guy is trying to tell you to disconnect once in a while and get back to the simpler things in life rather than using the net or tv as a constant diversion from life....But then again this is digg, for most of the user base here there is nothing more to their life than the computer and tv.
- darthsabbath, on 10/11/2007, -8/+45Amen. I happen to ENJOY computers and games. They make me happy. Anyone who thinks they're better because they'd rather frolic with the birds can eat *****.
- sodascape, on 10/11/2007, -7/+44I like everything but "unplug the internet" . . . . ***** that!
- silverchrysalis, on 10/11/2007, -9/+45yeah.
"vote republican!"
"vote democrat!" - darthsabbath, on 10/11/2007, -4/+39You know, I can appreciate many things on this list, but the author fails to take into account some things:
- Not every wants to be outside. I've never been an outdoorsy type. I'd rather be inside curled up with a good book with my wife, or tinkering with my computer or some other gadget.
- There's plenty of good content on TV and the internet, especially for knowledge junkies like me. National Geographic, Discovery, Wikipedia, etc.
- Some people just aren't in the position to sell their cars and take off to see the world, as nice as it sounds.
- Even if you don't like the outside, there's plenty to do that's enriching: musems, zoos, art galleries, concerts, etc.
Sorry, one size DOESN'T fit all, author. - TheSalmonThief, on 10/11/2007, -5/+39"Talk to old people"
NO - sugarazor, on 10/11/2007, -10/+43Stop reading the newspaper/watching the news has to be one of the most irresponsible pieces of advice I've ever heard. "My mom tells me anything important," go ***** yourself. Yeah, keep living your life in ignorance and go kiss in the rain... ***** tool.
- Daedalus81, on 10/11/2007, -2/+31It seemed to me like some of those fall under the same category. Maybe they should have gone with 30. And sell my house and take a mini retirement every few years? I don't think so! I'd be one hell of a penniless hippie by the time I really retired.
- Babayetu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+29There are a few good tips, such as: take risks, follow excitement, and learn something new. Scientifically, when we follow a routine, our brain isn't active. When we drive a car, we don't have to actively monitor the surroundings, we just "drive." When you learn to drive a car though, your brain is fully active.
Risk and learning new things both activate your brain and force you to create new schemas. Those are the moments of your life you'll remember on your deathbed, not the routines you do on autopilot. - tidu, on 10/11/2007, -2/+28Ignorance is bliss
- Kratisto, on 10/11/2007, -3/+29This is like a bad collection of fortune cookie bits.
- beavioso, on 10/11/2007, -1/+26I'll have to remember to keep you away from my dog... and well me and my family.
- SillyRabbits, on 10/11/2007, -3/+28Actually I've found a lot of older people are just older versions of the idiots I deal with everyday. Except, they think they have become magically wise because they've managed to survive so long. Sure, there are wise ones, but the ratio is about the same as wise 40-year olds.
- AncientWeird, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2534 things to do with can > 39 ways to live. Sad.
- snapcase, on 10/11/2007, -8/+29"Swim in a freezing lake."
Yeah, hypothermia really is a great way to live life... - AlexanderZero, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2729. Stop playing video games.
No! No No NO NO NO NOOOOO! - IRoaChI, on 10/11/2007, -10/+30@savor
I just enjoy beeing wasted all the time
^o^ - silverchrysalis, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21actually, i think talking to old people is awesome. they have some amazing stories, and (usually) an unspoiled viewpoint on life that is better that the typical entitled people around us...
the crazy ones are fun to mess with, too - Gizza, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20@slydevil01 (#7274010)
I never watch the news, in fact I barely ever watch TV. I figure if the news is important enough to know about it will show up on the front page. - Kronos6948, on 10/11/2007, -6/+25They forgot:
"***** everything that moves." - Silencer7, on 10/11/2007, -6/+25I reaffirm my self-worth by insulting the Internet, one page at a time.
- PunkRampant, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19I think what the article is trying to say is that a lot of people turn into drones when they use the internet or play video games. I have friends who get new games, have fun for a while, but eventually they just play out of habit and they aren't even happy anymore.
- bobcrotch, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1939 ways to live like a spoiled trust fund brat.
I would say the majority of people who could use this advice live their lives the way they do because they NEED to have a job and they aren't allowed to live like a 'free spirit' and do what ever they want when they want. - silent, on 10/11/2007, -5/+17As simple as it sounds, kissing passionately in the rain is actually pretty amazing. Down pour... Unforgettable.
- silverchrysalis, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14but- how can i travel if i sell my car?
- wastern, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Find the right old person and you can learn a lot. I regret not taking the time to listen to more stories from my grandpa before he passed
- ttamshadbolt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10moooooom, bathroooom...
- Johann4u, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Christ, not everything is a personal assault on you. The article is just giving a different perspective... Some of its bull but half you people posting here are just close-minded ***** lookin for some outlet for to quell your raging sense of self-loathing.
- dzof, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I'm kind of surprised at the level of cynicism in the comments - I always assumed that geeks in general were romantics. To me, the article lists out things that you should consider doing at least once in your life. I guess the author feels it's not enough to be satisfied with life, but that you should lean out, stretch out and reach for more. Not in quantity, but in variety.
I once quit my job to travel for a few months. The kind of travel where not too much was planned, and every day was uncertain enough to be exciting. I remember and cherish more of those one hundred or so days than what I've been doing in the last six months. Don't y'all get that? - Kevin108, on 10/11/2007, -6/+16One way to really live
1. Don't follow "How to Live" lists on the internet. - whatsgoodike, on 10/11/2007, -7/+17"I haven't watch TV news or read a newspaper regularly in about two years. It hasn't hurt me a bit. Anything important, my mom tells me about."
Wait.. your mom? I guess this is a great list for those who don't strive to be successful, because this man (boy?) doesn't sound like he does.
"Do you do things the same way every day? Change it up. Try something new."
orly?? Anyone else read his latest article titled:
"Create weekly and daily routines"
:-/ - merripen, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Also, dance.
- msgyrd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I agree with that one. I quit watching TV news because it takes a huge amount of my time to convey so little information, and then you always have to wonder about the level of ***** on national news stations. I quit reading newspapers because I couldn't justify paying for something I can get on the net for free, and it creates a lot of trash. Local papers are still nice, but thats about it.
And don't single out the mom comment. It's totally correct. If I don't read it on the internet beforehand, the watercooler gossipers will bring me up to speed with current events I should know about. - DephexTwin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Yeah, I know what you mean. I think that some of the ideas are good in the sense that you should give them a chance because they *might* be the way to go for you. Like, maybe you truly do enjoy playing video games or watching TV, but if you haven't tried to spend three weeks wandering around in Europe (for example), you should try something like that once. If you get back home and still love playing video games then more power to ya, but just consider some of these things.
On the other hand, I do think some of the suggestions are *****. - darthsabbath, on 10/11/2007, -6/+14Riiiight. Because hiking and bicycling make the world a better place. Yes, going outdoors can be rewarding. Actually living your life is a good thing, and a healthy balance between mindless fun (video games) and enriching activities (playing with kids) is cool. But for those of us who aren't so keen on the sunlight, there's plenty to do. As I mentioned in another post, there's books, museums, fine restaurants, zoos, and all sorts of other fun things. Never mind that many of us geeks get sheer joy out of things quite different than what this author suggests. This isn't necessarily a bad list, just a little arrogant for the author to assume that those who ignore this advice are "just existing".
- Johann4u, on 10/11/2007, -13/+21Its good for people to get these reminders from time to time.
- lansuggs, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10Whether this came off as tacky to you all or not, I feel like I need to go outside right now. I won't, but I still really want to.
- milk93rd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Automobiles?
