- davidjunit, on 11/09/2009, -2/+25My family has a solution for this: Know what people want, don't give ***** gifts.
- Blinker1315, on 11/09/2009, -0/+22THIS year? My mother-in-law has re-gifted for the past 20 years.
- sierrabravo, on 11/09/2009, -1/+21i'll be regifting via ebay this year.
- stutimandal, on 11/09/2009, -1/+20Abstain > Reuse > Recycle > Trash
- stutimandal, on 11/09/2009, -0/+12I hope it is not just two gifts swapping between you and your MIL.
- ChaotikBlu, on 11/09/2009, -1/+12Awesome?
- catalysis, on 11/09/2009, -2/+12My family gradually phased out exchanging gifts on Christmas over the last few years (except for very young kids) and the holiday has gotten much more enjoyable. I enjoy gift giving, but the tradition has just gotten ridiculous and lame.
- BubblesTheChimp, on 11/09/2009, -0/+8That's because regifting is ***** AWESOME!
- LinuxLiberty, on 11/09/2009, -0/+7Why can't we just stop this ***** nonsense of buying someone else a gift then expecting them to buy you a gift. What is the logic behind this. Someone else will know better what you want than you do? You will know better what someone else wants than they do? I'm not a believer but I used to love Christmas because you got some time off to spend some time with your family. Now I can't stand it, I would rather go to work. All the commercialism and consumerism has completely ruined the holidays for me.
- ToxicTexan, on 11/09/2009, -0/+6wasn't it a label maker?
- noblesnail, on 11/09/2009, -0/+6I totally digg regifting. This idea that every thing you give away has to be brand new and never taken out of the box is just really sad and equals huge amounts of unnecessary consumption. I just got a book the other day that I already read, I liked it. Giving it away to someone else who I think will like it as well makes perfect sense to me.
Viva la Regifting! - sgerwel1985, on 11/09/2009, -0/+6Well i ***** that one up... That is what i get for a long day of work and my mind thinking about MW2.
- L0NER, on 11/09/2009, -0/+5Somebody's getting bombed with my unused margarita maker
- carlosos, on 11/10/2009, -0/+4My family normally only exchange gifts if they can think of a good gift and otherwise just do it for the next birthday as a bigger gift and sometimes we give gifts before Christmas. Maybe about 50% of the gifts are only exchanged on Christmas.
- StreetPreacher, on 11/10/2009, -0/+4My family's got an even better one - stop giving crappy gifts that nobody needs altogether.
We still do it for the kids, but adults just stopped completely and I'd NEVER go back. Instead we spend that money on a family vacation every year over a long weekend. Nothing fancy, just a cabin in the mountains or a house at the beach. The loss of consumerism and anxiety plus the added quality time together is 1,000% better than anything under the tree. - brad3378, on 11/09/2009, -0/+4Another Fruitcake?
- Elranzer, on 11/09/2009, -1/+5No one will take Bush. He's the fruitcake that everyone says "No thanks, that's ok" when offered.
- WraTH017, on 11/10/2009, -1/+4My family is doing a secret Santa this year. First of all, because they're broke. Second of all, because I absolutely hate what x-mas has become and this was the perfect time to sneak this in.
Back when i was a child, xmas was all about getting together and exchanging cheap little things that made the kids happy. Nowadays people expect Ipods, videogame consoles, or blu-ray players... ***** that. That consumerist attitude is part of the reason my family is in financial trouble this year.
/rant - imbobbyus, on 11/10/2009, -0/+3Wait, but Dow crossed 10,000 easily. Not sure what is fake and what is not.
- silverchrysalis, on 11/10/2009, -0/+3Dave Barry has a great piece on the gifting trend. He said his wife even keeps simple gifts in her closet as 'retaliatory gifts' in case she gets something unexpected. It's hilarious, as all his stuff is, but points out how ridiculous gift giving can be at times.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboa ... - anthropodeus, on 11/10/2009, -0/+3@genitalben
is that a personal story from your childhood? because it would make sense that you were turned into a such a bitter person. - Palestrina, on 11/10/2009, -0/+3Of course we're regifting more. What the ***** do you expect when our taxes are going up, health care costs are rising (even with proposed "reform"), inflation is creeping up, and our homes are worth less than ever. Be thankful your even getting a ***** gift in the first place.
- DiggRage, on 11/09/2009, -1/+4I think we need to go to Tolkien and stop using the word "regifting" and instead use "Mathom".
/nerd? - mlw4428, on 11/09/2009, -4/+6Ahh yes, only in *insert your country*, do you feel high and mighty enough to bash America. I've known Brits, Aussies, and Kiwis that do regifting. But go on, continue your slander of Americans. You're better than us anyways...
- coraleaterlinda, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2Wait, i thought everyone re-gifted. At least, my family does.
- shortmilton, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2There you go...one more reason to buy ***** that you like and give it to other folks.I think my wife will be getting a trolling motor for Christmas this year.
- ThanatosST, on 11/10/2009, -1/+3Sounds kinky.
- d3dm, on 11/10/2009, -1/+3I'll be making a donation to the Human Fund on behalf of all of you this year.
- carlosos, on 11/10/2009, -0/+2That is one of the few cases were it makes sense but 36% are planning to regifting?
My guess was that it happens maybe 1-2% of the time but not that much. - noblesnail, on 11/10/2009, -0/+1But doesn't that mean that 36% of all families are planning to regift at least ONE gift. How big a percentage of ALL GIFTS is that really going to be?
- noblesnail, on 11/10/2009, -0/+1I think the reason regifting has such a bad reputation is that all we give (and buy for our selves) is crap! If things weren't so *****, mass produced and broke all the time it would make a lot more sense to regift. (Technology excluded of course...)
I'm actually quite pissed-off at valves "you wouldn't give a way a opened gift message" when arguing that you can't gift people games you have from your own collection instead of buying them. Why shouldn't you? Don't try to create problems of "bad, used" gifts where there are none! It's a stupid social protocol. - eljitto, on 11/10/2009, -0/+1how exactly is it immoral?
- csm888, on 11/10/2009, -1/+2More gifts, more *****....screw consumerism. Buy what you need, not what you think others want....christ.... I'm a miserable bastard
- sierrabravo, on 11/15/2009, -0/+1no i'm the fruitcake, i'll be selling crap
- eljitto, on 11/10/2009, -0/+1what jurisdiction does he have over us?
- anthropodeus, on 11/10/2009, -0/+1well, where is it?
- verynegative, on 11/10/2009, -0/+1***** Xmas.
- niradg, on 11/09/2009, -1/+2Hey Diggers! I got u guize this great fruitcake!
- Maeveone, on 11/18/2009, -0/+1Teachers have to regift a lot. I just submitted something to digg about the horrible presents teachers get.
- verynegative, on 11/10/2009, -0/+1You and me both.
- egh3, on 11/10/2009, -0/+1Do you think that matters?
- Samueul, on 11/10/2009, -0/+0We have a running joke in my family (cousins, aunts, uncles etc.). We've been regifting the same wall mounted singing fish ever since the damn thing hit the market like 20 years ago. The only rule is you cannot gift it to someone two years running. Every year the gifter and giftee has to scibble their initials and the year on the damn thing. It's completely covered now and still going strong. I think it has the original batteries in it..
- Czyskimo, on 11/10/2009, -1/+1I definitely thought this was The Onion.
