- blitzer, on 01/04/2008, -0/+21You mom cant be on every list...
- EugineMW, on 01/04/2008, -0/+19hmm, I suggest going into a career or field you passionately love, not what the market dictates.
- inactive, on 01/04/2008, -5/+23where's pimp?
- EXreaction, on 01/04/2008, -0/+17Usability/User Experience Specialist
Don't know what kind of demand there are for those kinds of people, but with all the ***** software with completely stupid UI's, there definitely needs to be more of them. - tylerjames, on 01/04/2008, -0/+13I like how they just lump "Engineer" into one category there. Sure is a lot of similarity between a Chemical Engineer and a Software Engineer. And median salary $90k? I can't wait to graduate.
- sjbdallas, on 01/04/2008, -3/+15If porn star or strip club DJ isn't on the list, then i'm burying as inaccurate.
- coasterswim, on 01/04/2008, -1/+12I don't know about you, but I wake up 7 days a week voluntarily.
- Urusai, on 01/04/2008, -1/+10Looks like a list of random occupations to me. I've figured out the boom jobs for America's future already: wainwright, blacksmith, tinkerer, itinerant peasant, yacht builder, toady, police officer, worker in the state labor or welfare department, butler, etc. In other words, either 1) pandering to the rich, 2) servicing the masses of starving poor, or 3) maintaining crumbling private infrastructure (public infrastructure will continue to go to hell like it's been doing for the last 20-30 years).
- Supadude, on 01/04/2008, -0/+8Thats cool. Just kiss your social life goodbye.
- falcon1, on 01/04/2008, -0/+7As long as you enjoy the job, thats great. All the money in the world isn't going to mean ***** if you cant stand having to wake up 5 days a week. I would much rather enjoy my job and make less money, but if you can get both, your golden.
- jon30041, on 01/04/2008, -3/+10Firefighting has some of the best benefits one can imagine. Tack on the whole kids worshiping you thing, the chicks loving you for the sweet-as-hell hat, etc, it's the best deal ever. Firefighters get respect, not because people are scared of them like they are cops, but because their job description is "go into a dangerous place and save people."
I'm starting the physical testing stuff next week. Hopefully, I'll get a call in the second week of March, after I take and pass the CPAT and the written exams I'll need to take for each department. - Pinkertinkle, on 01/04/2008, -0/+7Author has no real experience with any of these careers except ghostwriting, I can't trust him.
- trauts, on 01/04/2008, -2/+9That site seems like to much work
- tgc1, on 01/04/2008, -1/+7Is it just my experiences or are the people doing the hiring for those types of jobs totally out of touch with reality? They want people with 10 skill sets, various professions combined, and work for half of what you should be making. I read these hiring postings and I just sort of wonder what they're thinking.
- merbot, on 01/04/2008, -2/+8Software Engineer would be nice if I could get past the ***** interview process
- TheCure, on 01/04/2008, -0/+6They should stick to assigning arbitrary rankings to colleges
- gaoshan, on 01/04/2008, -2/+8I once delivered a pizza to a stripclub (in full Domino's Pizza delivery uniform... hat, nametag, jacket, official shirt... I looked like a guy in some training video). The tip involved a bunch of girls gathering around and hugging me... all topless. That was a pretty good job for a young guy, lemme tell you.
- jaytek13, on 01/04/2008, -0/+5Except... Real engineers don't consider "software engineering" actually part of the engineering field.
All I'm noticing is a complete lack of computer related jobs on the list... which is not surprising considering I'm having a very difficult time finding a job. - inactive, on 01/04/2008, -4/+9This kind of list always makes we wish I studied something other than art history in college... :)
- sgr215, on 01/04/2008, -4/+9This list lost my respect when I saw "clergy" listed. My father, who's a Methodist minister, makes far less than the median salary. The salary they get most likely includes housing allowance. This means they either pay for an apartment or more likely give you a house while you're working. (AKA parsonage) The houses are usually falling apart and have numerous and serious health hazards though. His latest house has issues with mold. Part of the reason I'm atheist today is due to the fact I know just what major domination's do and how they treat their ministers but thats getting off topic. Anyhow, If you're good at kissing ass though you'll be able to become a "super attendant". They make over 100K a year and live in a mansion for free. Seriously though, avoid being in clergy like the plague. (Unless of course you feel God really does speak to you and you're chosen for some divine purpose) If that's the case though, you may be better off seeing a psychologist.
- bamafun, on 01/04/2008, -4/+9Audiologist must be a hot career now that everyone is going deaf from listening to music too loud on their ipods or so fox news claims .....
- orchardo, on 01/15/2008, -3/+8Interesting to see "ghostwriter" listed as its own profession. I'm sure "ghostbloggers" are the fastest growing part of that group. (This comment written by sbaradell's ghostwriter.)
- tennisninja38, on 01/04/2008, -1/+6i don't trust any "best" list us news makes
- waalter, on 01/04/2008, -1/+5I like the list of overrated careers they threw in there:
Advertising executive
Architect
Attorney
Chef
Chiropractor
Clinical psychologist
Medical scientist
Nonprofit manager
Physician
Police officer
Real estate agent
Small-business owner
Teacher - mahdaeng, on 01/04/2008, -0/+4[[Part of the reason I'm atheist today is due to the fact I know just what major domination's do and how they treat their ministers but thats getting off topic.]]
That's the wrong reason to be an atheist. An atheist believes that there is no God. Martin Luther was not an atheist, but he was opposed to the religious establishment of the time. It is not reasonable to point to the failures of a particular religious organization as evidence that God does not exist. - emjaymj, on 01/04/2008, -0/+4Somebody who writes something which somebody else takes credit for.
- thotpoizn, on 01/04/2008, -0/+4Not for nothing, but a lot of people who are really talented at ________ completely lack any semblance of interviewing skills. How often do you get interviewed? How often do you interview other people? Add to that all too often the people who CONDUCT the interviews completely suck at it and/or lack the expertise to competently screen for the position in question, and your position becomes even less tenable.
- tayf, on 01/04/2008, -1/+5My friend was a strip club dj. Its a bloody dangerous place for sexual harassment lawsuits (fabricated ones).
- PerfectMac, on 01/04/2008, -0/+4Mafia Boss doesn't factor in here????
- transitive, on 01/04/2008, -1/+5i agree with the sentiment. i am an engineering student in Software Engineering, and while my peers are also "engineers" we are studying very different things and after the first two years (out of five) there's hardly any overlap in our curricula.
most of the job categories are far too generalized to be meaningful. in any given year there might be a huge disparity of demand for software engineers (very high demand right now) compared to say civil engineers (depends heavily on whether or not your city has a major infrastructure project going on or not). - inactive, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3Being a Librarian rules! I get to sit here and ***** around on Digg all day.
- tayf, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3Working conditions aren't good. Pay isn't special either.
- eastdale12, on 01/04/2008, -1/+4I'm a Surgical Technologist trying to get into a P.A. program in Miami FL. Its good to see it on the list, but on the other hand I'd like for it to be a little less publicized. Okay call me selfish.
- inactive, on 01/04/2008, -2/+5After looking at that list, no wonder I told my boss to stick his job and shove it 11 years ago. People who want a career generally don't have the balls to work for themselves.
- tyywebb, on 01/04/2008, -4/+7Thank you, now I don't have to waste my time reading this thing and can go right ahead and bury as inaccurate!
- theOster, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3data synthesis. this is the way of the future. taking seemingly disparate data types and combining them in an understandable and easy to use way is what it's all about. and maybe the hokey pokey.
- themastersb, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3BTW. Blogging isn't a job and shouldn't be considered work.
- dealseeker, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3"There's a sucker born every minute ... and, chances are, that sucker will respond to my Craigslist post..."
- ImpulseControl, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3Are you kidding me? I'm with a software consulting firm in Chicago and we are ALWAYS looking for bright CS/Tech majors right out of college. Maybe you're just not looking in the right places or your resume needs some work.
I'm not sure where you're getting the idea you have to start as a QA, but there is still a huge demand for talented developers... - whatthefu, on 01/04/2008, -1/+4***** this. Do what makes you happy.
- andywirtanen, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3Large demand and a good number of graduate/undergraduate programs exist. I've been a usability consultant for a couple years after starting out doing web dev.
Many companies (e.g. eBay, Google, Amazon, etc.) have in-house usability groups. Some of them farm out the work. The demand for usability people is the largest it has been since before the boom. - tgc1, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3I'm referring to rather large companies whos hiring staff are ill equipped to complete the task. Let alone understand what the hell it is they are asking the potential employee at the time.
- jcdickerson, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3Lots of demand for this role - been doing this for 7 years and I rarely go without work..
- trollick, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2Where is Internet Troll??
- Mewchu11, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2You're revealing your existence? What kind of ghostwriter are you?!
- thebigtime, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2Man, I'm sad to see architecture ranking so high on the overrated list. Alas, though it's all true. I recently received a degree in the subject and began working. There ain't much creativity left once the hog's have bagged all the interesting work. Leaving you to do all the donkey work!
- jriggs420, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2Some people also earn more money filming themselves having sex. I think the the ratio must be pretty small tho-
- inertic, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2Millions of people get finance degrees but very few are going to end up working in a place like Goldman Sachs. Unless you graduate from an Ivy League and have really good connections, you'll never advance further than middle management at some company.
- jon30041, on 01/04/2008, -1/+3Firefighting is on there, and it's my current pursuit.
Win win! That and the one day on, two days off setup is sweet! -
