- orangederange, on 01/17/2009, -0/+37is it just me, or does bloomberg change their links? I had to find the article here:
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive ... - KimmyGibbler, on 01/18/2009, -2/+36That's terrible, but at least we have been kept safe from terrorists since 9/12/2001 and we don't have to worry about our neighbors going on a marijuana-induced murderous rampage thanks to the War on Drugs. If you ask me, the surplus couldn't have been better spent. Thanks Dick 'n Bush! /s
- BotchaMcCoola, on 01/17/2009, -6/+32But I feel more safe from the Taliban than when our government wasted billions building them up against the Russians. Plus, I don't have as much money to count anymore.
- Keyhole, on 01/18/2009, -0/+21And how about Circuit City, they are closing now and will let something around 35,000 people go!
Circuit City to liquidate remaining U.S. stores

Did I mention I'm from Michigan? - Dumbledorito, on 01/18/2009, -0/+16Land of free houses with no plumbing?

Sponsored links - bbardlbradd, on 01/18/2009, -0/+12I'm feeling it too, I just had my hours cut and after going over my rate of income and cost of living (true barebone cost of living here, feeding myself and my significant other with $70/week, and having fairly clean clothes). I've found that I'll be short $100 at least every month... I'll be pulling from savings to live, and I'm trying to put myself through school at the same time.
What are you going to do though? You work at a ***** place in a city where unemployment is somewhere around 11%, and you hear about all of these fortune 500 companies biting the dust... and your hours are being cut so low that you cannot pay for essentials, much less save or pay off debt. I'm losing my faith. - mshtml, on 01/18/2009, -3/+15Empire aboard, poverty at home.
- Seekness, on 01/17/2009, -0/+12They say Friday's the day to lay someone off, so I guess the logic would follow that so many of last week's layoffs took place yesterday. Still, it's scary to see how quickly it's all happening - and sadly, it's just getting started.
- cquinnd, on 01/18/2009, -5/+17The US Government did not build up the Taliban, they built up the Muhajadeen rebels, who were loose factions of various tribal groups in the Afghan region.
The Taliban came in to fill the power vacuum that was left when the Soviets pulled out, and no other group could create a common bond between the tribal warlords.
The US was remiss in ignoring the region and the socio-political changes that occured after the collapse of the USSR, but we did not directly support the Taliban. - badqat, on 01/18/2009, -0/+11It's not you...they're bastards.
- asgardshill, on 01/18/2009, -0/+11God, but I hate this Great Depression. And this is my first one.
- MomaVujisic, on 01/18/2009, -0/+11Holy hell thats 50,000+ jobs lost in what 2 days? Circuit City and now Hertz!
- Dumbledorito, on 01/18/2009, -0/+10It's 21k plus everything else.
The dot com bust was big, no mistake, but not economy-wide. - mattmedwards, on 01/18/2009, -0/+10Yeah you said it man. If anyone wants to know what the depression looks like come visit Detroit East side. We've been in a recession for decades!
- superterrorizer, on 01/18/2009, -0/+10Yeah, two of my friends, both managers, just got let go early there. It's not a good situation inside the company. One was just flushed after like 20 years .I feel bad for his family now because he's gotta move to find another job. It's hard watching people you know go through this.
- trotskyist, on 01/18/2009, -0/+9Yeah, tell that to the hundreds of thousands of middle and working class people who have lost their jobs in the last few months.
- Glorydies, on 01/18/2009, -0/+8No i don't believe he was saying that at all. It sounded to me like he was just referring to the fact that the huge amount of money the government has blown on that great idea didn't help matters any.
- ruarctb, on 01/18/2009, -0/+8I had to move back with my dad and work for wal-mart it got so bad. I have a college degree, but I got laid off 2 times in a row.
My dad doesn't mind. He's got a second pair of hands to do house work and I help pay the bills. Wal-Mart doesn't pay the same as a programming or design job, but I have AMAZING job security. My only issue is I'm laying in bed sick instead of working right now. - publiclurker, on 01/18/2009, -1/+9The Taliban is the name for the collection of groups that we supported. Just because they change their name does nor absolve our responsibility.
- bjornski, on 01/18/2009, -1/+9You're doing it wrong. It should be...
***** YOU! TWO OF MY FRIENDS GOT FIRED FROM CIRCUIT CITY! - johanesw, on 01/18/2009, -0/+7"THE REPUBLIC IS FALLING BITCHES....BETTER LEARN SOME ***** CHINESE!!!!"
-Stephen Colbert - JonathonB, on 01/18/2009, -0/+6Yeah - a previous comment suggests bloomberg changes their links and gives this url: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive ...
- bjornski, on 01/18/2009, -2/+8You say that as if it's a bad thing.
It's not. - cubicledrone, on 01/18/2009, -0/+6Layoffs and Powerpoint are all this country produces. Employers are too immature and irresponsible to pay for what they order. They are only interested in scheduling meetings to talk about how important they are. They build nothing and accomplish nothing.
1960 America would kick the ***** out of 2009 America economically if they had our tools. - vanguardanon, on 01/18/2009, -0/+621,000? It sounds like they missed the 34,000 people that work at Circuit City.
- jbmcb, on 01/18/2009, -1/+7If the US is an empire, it's a pretty crappy one. No free rum from Puerto Rico. No free oil from Iraq. No free... um... rugs from Afghanistan.
- sancho, on 01/18/2009, -2/+7For starters, the executive branch sets a lot of policy and has a huge amount of influence. It appoints officials to high posts which have a great deal of power. Greenspan, for example, first appointed by Regan, is considered to be one of the driving forces behind the delay of the normal low-growth period of the economic cycle (and by extension, is the reason that this recession is hitting a little harder than one would expect.) You remember him, right? He's the one that kept driving interest rates lower, removing the incentive to save, and ultimately being one of the major factors in the housing crisis.
Anyway, the economy started tanking long before the Dems had a majority. They're going to get to ride this wave and institute larger government with greater ease than before, because people are going to be so distressed over the economy. Also, don't forget that the bailouts were joint measures, and they did have the president's approval each time.
Ultimately, you're right though. The US as a whole decided that they wanted some instant gratification in the form of SUVs, flatscreen TVs, and better corporate bottom lines rather than long term stability and growth. - agflorida, on 01/18/2009, -3/+8Changing President George Bush Jr. to the Defendant George Bush Jr. will be a welcome change. Just think if he privatized social security a few years ago!
- jeffgtr, on 01/18/2009, -0/+5My daughter was let go from the local newspaper on Friday. This was her first job after college. I told her there were two bits of good news, she didn't have to pack up to move home because she was already there, and she got out of a dead end business (print newspaper) before she got too dug in. Still it sucks. The unemployment situation is hitting everyone in one way or another.
- johnhummel, on 01/18/2009, -2/+7I know what you mean. I know I can't, I even know the arguments for "let people sink or swim on their own."
I do want to build better social nets for people, so when they lose their jobs they don't just up and lose their health care or pensions don't vanish when a company goes under. But I see nothing wrong with caring enough to wish that everyone could be covered in bad times. - thinkaboutits, on 01/18/2009, -0/+5Yes, link was moved to
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive ...
as orangederange stated earlier for you.... - carlosauresrex, on 01/18/2009, -0/+4Oh cool, a link to a bunch of advertisements and an option to register to bloomberg.com in order to read the article. Yet another gem on the digg frontpage.
</facetiousness> - bbardlbradd, on 01/18/2009, -0/+4$70 includes the pets and things like TP. Also, girls are expensive creatures. We've tried to cut back and eat Top Roman for at least over 100 days, but it's hard. When your diet consists mostly of water and sodium, you tend to become feeble and retarded.
- StingingNettle, on 01/18/2009, -0/+4One job away from doomsday.
- inactive, on 01/18/2009, -2/+6That's gotta hurtz a lot.
- nirav72, on 01/18/2009, -0/+4Correct. The dotcom bust was primarily tied to the tech sector. This one we're currently witnessing is having an effect on everyone. Including formally well off and economically stable people.
- Mercedes383, on 01/18/2009, -1/+5You just have to hang on and see it through. It won't last forever.
- bjornski, on 01/18/2009, -0/+4Morons like Zoom have been blaming Obama for the economy since September. I'm not surprised at his lack of skill with a calendar.
- muckemuck, on 01/18/2009, -2/+6.... and the Federal Reserve.. and Congress.. and Wall Street.. and the Clinton administration.
This things been stewing for decades. Bush clearly made a ton of mistakes and is responsible for much of the fiasco of 2008 (he supported the $150,000,000,000 in stimulus checks to poor and middle income taxpayers which didn't help, he supported the TARP and UAW bailouts, and much more) but if you blame it just on the "Bush administration" then you let the others slide - and that's not good. - lowdose, on 01/18/2009, -0/+4it is not the economy i am worried about, its these giant bats flying about. those ***** can tare your head clean off in one fell swoop.
god damn it, almost lost my head there... - OutlawAdidas, on 01/18/2009, -0/+4"We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off. "
yea... - mshtml, on 01/18/2009, -1/+5Peasants are taxed to pay for empire, the benefits belong to the ruling class.
- kd1s, on 01/18/2009, -0/+3Starting to get like Zorg enterprises here.
- whorunbartertwn, on 01/18/2009, -0/+3Remember you're still young but have more experience and an expanded skillset compared to when you left college, I'm sure you'll do fine on your job hunt.
Keep chin up and best of luck. - theespecialist, on 01/19/2009, -0/+3Lot more to come.
- Khast, on 01/18/2009, -3/+6You sir, are a complete ***** moron.....Obama technically isn't president until January 20th....and little dimwitted ***** like yourself blame Obama for not stopping this, or how could he let this happen.
Can't you ***** ***** wait another 2 days.....apparently not. - Future2, on 01/18/2009, -0/+3The holding company for my bank is based in Michigan _AND_ Arizona. The stock price has gone from 45 to 5 in less than two years.
