- crackerjack20, on 07/16/2009, -3/+28What a stupid list. Calling a "stay at home mom" a job? *****. I'm a stay at home dad. Sure, I take care of the kids all day and take care of the house, and I'm basically an on-call parent 24 hours a day. But I DON"T GET PAID, THEREFORE IT"S NOT A JOB!!!! That's like saying "watching TV is a job because it saves you money because you're not going out to see movies". What a worthless list.

We make anywhere from $11-50/hr in tips(depending on location and clientele) on top of base pay as well as great full health benefits and profit sharing checks each quarter. I got through college and was able to pay all my bills just working part time. - insinuate, on 07/16/2009, -1/+15CEO is listed as a worse job because you have to deal with the negative things of a company? HA! Thats what you pay other people to do.
- StevieJanowski, on 07/16/2009, -0/+14I'd say dentist should be on here as worse than you thought. they make a lot of money but they also have a really high suicide rate
- ProjectGSX, on 07/16/2009, -2/+15Who cares even if its true. Ill go cry myself to sleep on my ten million dollar exit package.
- megaton, on 07/16/2009, -5/+17I'll get buried for this, but it bears saying:
My father has been the CEO of a pretty large regional company for as long as I can remember. He pulls in a pretty penny, to be sure, but that man is one of the hardest working people I've ever known, and earns every cent he makes. He usually leaves for work before 7am, gets back after 9 or 10pm, doesn't get weekends off, and gets a total of 2 weeks paid vacation every year. He's sacrificed a lot of himself for the well-being of his family and his company.
Granted, he's my father, so I'm biased. But for every 1 AIG CEO, there are 2,000 smaller CEOs working their asses off to build profitable multi-million dollar businesses in honorable ways. It's infuriating to hear a bunch of whiny kids who hate their stockroom jobs bitching about how "evil" the head honcho is, when I'd be willing to bet my life 98% of them haven't ever been within 100 feet of a real, actual CEO, let alone spoken to one.
***** ignorant diggers and their prejudices. Grow up, guys. Your angst is only embarrassing you. - insinuate, on 07/16/2009, -3/+15take another bong rip and go back to bed, hippy.
- EndouOuto, on 07/16/2009, -1/+13Wow! What a ***** article.

- numberneal, on 07/16/2009, -1/+12charging spare change to cross a plank over puddles flowing by the curb
- Pxtl, on 07/16/2009, -0/+10Umm, what? The jobs that "aren't as good as you thought" are stupid. Everybody knows they work hard and have a lot of accountability. They still pay a farktonne of money... and in the case of the CEO, you usually get to keep it even if you fark up catastrophically (so the "accountability" thing ain't all that bad).
- Cainxinth, on 07/16/2009, -0/+10Who thought being a personal assistant was a great job? It's almost always used as a stepping stone to something better.
- frequentFlyer, on 07/16/2009, -0/+9I still think being a Spy would be very engaging work.
- megaton, on 07/16/2009, -1/+10Your friends starting websites can calling themselves "CEO" doesn't mean they really are.
- DarthNihilist, on 07/16/2009, -0/+6Yeah misstress, to wife, to ex wife.
- OLTP, on 07/16/2009, -0/+5I vote for Data Analyst. I just browse the web while my queries do the work.
- PixelMagic, on 07/16/2009, -0/+5I agree, but sadly, it's necessary.
- krets, on 07/16/2009, -0/+5Uh, in the majority of businesses (especially huge corps) the CEO did not in fact start the business.
- Elranzer, on 07/16/2009, -0/+5To be a librarian, you need a Masters degree accredited by the American Library Association. These are usually called the MLS (Masters of Library Science), or something similar like MSIS (Masters of Science in Information Science). It is one of a few professions that needs a specific degree, and therefor the degree is not "useless" as it is a requirement for a specific job.
You can get *jobs* in libraries without the Masters, but it won't be a librarian. You would be a librarian assistant or something, which is someone that goes around and puts away books, checks in and out materials, etc. The librarians are the ones who assist with research, give presentations and generally are the keepers of the knowledge they;'re in charge of.
It's a low-stress job, the profession is interesting and it pays well. This is probably why the current ones don't want to retire! I'm just waiting for those baby boomer librarians to retire.
A list of universities with the Masters:
http://www.ala.org/ala/educationcareers/education/ ...
If you want to be a professor of Library Science, you need the PhD in Informatics, which less schools offer than the MSIS. SUNY University at Albany, where I obtained my MSIS, also offers the PhD. - shanealeslie, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4Would you call tilling your own soil then sowing your own seeds then maintaining it for weeks and months until you harvest then process then properly store it for winter; protecting then slaughtering/shearing/milking the livestock for usable products; building your own house then defending it and your family against predators (human and animal) and natural disasters; providing all your own entertainment, tools, luxuries, medical care, scientific R&D and psychological/theological support services slavery?
People work jobs so that they do not have to do ALL these things for themselves, they pay others to do them out of the money they earn doing something that those others cannot/will not do - unless they want to live in a field, forest or cave and only eat fallen fruit and carrion. - passedoutghost, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4I have a job in childcare so I guess my job comes close. But even though my job has many of the perks that a stay at home parent has, looking after 30 odd kids is a nightmare. The amount of chaos that you have to put up with is insane.
But on the other hand my current degree leads me to one of the worst jobs listed on the site: Lawyer/Attorney.
*****. - Elranzer, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4Since female students do outnumber the males in this field, though, the school librarians are the tightest job market. Librarians with a tech background are the most in demand and highest-paying. This is mostly due to while those baby boomer librarians aren't retiring, they're not learning new tech skills either. This leaves open the door to tech librarian jobs to the college grads and younger people in general. Often you'll see this job title as "electronic cataloger" or "electronic resources librarian" in job post sites
- ru486, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4I don't know anyone that really likes their job after they've been in it for more than five years. They may exist, but not in my neighborhood.
- Elranzer, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4What they say about librarians is true. In fact, it's such a good job, that they refuse to retire! The stereotype about the "old lady" librarian comes from the fact that they won't retire. Because of this, recent library school graduates are finding it tough to find a job.
I'm 26 and have my ALA-accredited Library Science Masters degree and librarian certification, but yet to land a librarian job. Meanwhile, I'm working as a programmer analyst, luckily I took computer science for my undergraduate. I'd jump ship to a librarian position in a heartbeat, but there's just no open positions. - CraigReed, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4POTUS isn't worse that I thought, it's exactly what I thought it would be. And I would still want to be POTUS one day.
- Elranzer, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4The studies consist of library theory, modern methods of cataloging (electronic, of course), information politics, some business, some political science, and recently lots of computer courses that deal with information keeping such as database design and administrating. Also, if you want to be an elementary school librarian, there's extra courses from the education department of the university you have to take. School librarians get paid more than the teachers, by the way, but also get the tenure.
You basically get a broad range of technology, statistics, education, politics and business. You'll have to also pick a specialization (reference, school, special libraries such as a cooking library, government, etc).
Did you know museums are technically considered a special library and requires the same degree to be a curator, which is technically a type of librarian. - asnider, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4Yeah, if people didn't realize it was exactly as the article describe it, they've been living in denial.
- frequentFlyer, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3I work, therefore I am.
- dbalaski, on 07/16/2009, -1/+4Tattoo Artist a great career ?
I don't know -- doing artwork on various parts of people's anatomy does not seem like fun ...
(When I was last at the beach, i saw some tats and tramp stamps on people which made me think of how bad I felt for the artist who had to do them, and not from the artwork point of view) - BottledViolence, on 07/16/2009, -1/+4"If you're looking for a career change..."
Stay at home parent? I'm a single dude and I still have to do most of the same chores. Are we going to ad the value of that to my income too?
I have nothing but respect for parents who can and will devote all that effort into raising a kid and I'm not saying its easy, but I'm thinking that becoming a stay at home parent isn't an ideal career move. - mizike, on 07/16/2009, -1/+4Stay at home parent is only an option because your spouse is out there working twice as hard at some soul crushing job so you don't have to. And really, Journalism? Even before print journalism completely died it was next to impossible to get a job as a journalist. I think the stats show that some absurdly low number, in the area of 2%, of journalism graduates ever end up working full time jobs in their field. I agree with lawyer though, what the profession actually entails and what is portrayed on TV couldn't be more different. For example, only a small percentage of lawyers are litigators and even the most prominent litigators are rarely in court, unlike boston legal where they're in court on a different matter every day. Also lawyers don't investigate things, that's what the police are for.
- Gorkov, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3CEO's don't start businesses. That's owners/founders. CEO is like the manager at McDonald's, except he's the manager of all McDonald's.
- Elranzer, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3Librarians DO tend to be kooky. It's one of those job fields where being a little eccentric is the norm.
Nowadays, most female library students go for the school librarian, and most male library students tend to go the electronic database route. (Yes, there ARE male library students!) If you're a male, you have the same sort of advantage as male nurses... you're more in demand and you'll make more money than female librarians (I know it's sexist, but it's true). - XTomTomX, on 07/16/2009, -1/+4What, no Porn Actor?

It seemed like it was written by a 4 year old. - bmcnally, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3Garbagemen and other sanitation workers get paid a lot. Supply and demand.
- Grizzleyt, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3"Freelance pay is often low" ? Not in my experience. Freelancers can make double or triple the rate of full time employees because they have to pay for their own health care, have no 401K or stock options, and are expected to have at least some down time drumming up new work.
Whether it ends up being less or more than a full-time salary, well, that's up to you I guess. - zombiecarlin, on 07/16/2009, -1/+4I call BS on number 1. It is well know that George Bush was in bed every night by 9pm and he had more vacation time than a Middle School Teacher, plus he had cronies like Cheney to make all his decisions for him. Sounds like a sweet gig.
- Hellahulla, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3Indeed, 2 of my friends are DJs, and I really don't know why they do it, they never stop complaining and it sounds nasty as a job.
Put architect there too. I reckon 99% of architects just draw warehouses and blocks of flats and listen to contracters excuses, day in, day out. - CrazedLeper, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3Agreed, sadly.
- KJSatz, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3Those are some questionable genitals.
- bdpf, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2I like how only white collar or service opertunities are listed. <A large evil grin.>
No one likes to use their hands to make things?
Think of all the satisfying things you can do with your hands and mind. The feeling of a job well done, looking at something you made or helped make.
The trades made our life, yet everyone seems to think they are drudge work for the unemployable. Think again people, you need their skills and dedication for your way of life. Without them, you would be using a oneholer out back of the dug out house using a corn cob to wipe after the big job. They made possible the spare time needed for higher educations, while constructing the schools that provide the teachers.
What does a service economy provide for a better way of life. Someone you pay to walk your dog? - shanealeslie, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2@ CrazedLeper
So you know how to do ALL those things? If I could, I would, it would be very empowering - except I happen to like being able to stop working and relax occasionally. If we all had to do everything for ourselves we would never have time to enjoy spare time.
Even pre-industrial tribes have division of labor based on skill, and reward based on merit.
