Thanks lifestyle guru. - SearchRank, on 07/17/2009, -0/+10Mmm, with all the things that have "broken" or needed repair in my home this year, I've often times wished I was a renter. ;)
- BillyB, on 07/17/2009, -2/+11Just in time. It's 104 today. Sheesh.
- chooochooo, on 07/17/2009, -5/+14great tips!
- evildeadguy, on 07/18/2009, -0/+7Sweet cream of jesus, now the temperature is ***** metric?
- onClipEvent, on 07/18/2009, -0/+6get a cool wet towel and wrap around your neck/shoulder area, where the major blood vessel (Carotid Artery) travels....sounds stupidly simple, but it works.
- kungfujedis, on 07/18/2009, -0/+6set the AC to 78? hahahahahahaha....please........
- fragMasterFlash, on 07/18/2009, -0/+6Popsicles. Lots and lots of cheap ass super tastey cool you off popsicle goodness.
I call dibs on the cherry flavored ones. - Dealjobber, on 07/18/2009, -0/+5Have electricity included into your rent, leave it on all day.
- jschnell, on 07/17/2009, -3/+8I could use some of those right about now!
- foofightrs777, on 07/18/2009, -1/+6Wear nothing at all. Oh, and close the window blinds.
- Pinkertinkle, on 07/18/2009, -0/+5sitting naked with a giant fan 2 feet away works wonders
- chrisbaskind, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4Yeah, it can be a drag. But renters get ignored in the shuffle (still). Lots more folks renting these days.
- maci01, on 07/18/2009, -1/+5So I shouldn't wear my wool turtleneck sweater in 100 degree weather?
- evildeadguy, on 07/18/2009, -0/+4sharpies, man. sharpies.
- mehan, on 07/18/2009, -0/+4metric degrees? you mean Celcius
- dstachio, on 07/18/2009, -0/+4104 + 100% humidity.
- fragMasterFlash, on 07/18/2009, -0/+4So your definition of an average kitchen includes an electric tea kettle and rice cooker? While I own one of those devices I don't exactly consider my kitchen average, atleast not here in the good ol' USA.
- mc88, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3I don't think people will be preparing average meals with a tea kettle and a rice cooker.
- davidjunit, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3Replace the old-style mercury thermostat.
My rental had an old round analog thermostat and it would run at odd times and was inaccurate. I bought a $50-$60 digital thermostat from the hardware store, one that was able to be programmed with a schedule so I could set it to work less when I was away, and I'm glad I did. It's so much more efficient than the one that was here and they're simple to install and remove if you want to take it with you when you move (just put the old one back). - evildeadguy, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2So that 3% of plastic is what is keeping me from living in an apartment shaped igloo?
Or would I have to remove the back grating for that extra level up? - DrLeePhD, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2If your landlord covers the water bill, you live near a pond, or you just don't give a rip about how environmentally irresponsible this is, run a constant stream of water into an old radiator, then down the drain at the other end. mount fans to the radiator and you have a poorly effective air conditioner that uses very little electricity. You've also quadrupled your landlord's water bill, and you're probably getting evicted.
***** I dunno, you're pretty much ***** without A/C. - Chompy, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2Yeah I'll give you that, that's part of the reason I moved away from Maryland. I do not miss that soup action.
/ Vegas - damien6669, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2Best tip for staying cool during the day: At night get as much cold air in the place that you can. First thing in the morning, close your windows and black out the windows as best you can. It isn't the coldest solution, but it is free and works almost as good as AC.
- eric191, on 07/17/2009, -1/+3This info couldn't have come soon enough!! Thank you for the tips!
- mrBurnzz, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1*****....great idea! we need to link up and level up some more of my ideas. my fan is level 3 thanks to you.
- pappy97, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1For most people, we pay electricity in addition to rent. I know some places, especially low income apartments, that have this utility included in rent but it's few and far between.
- tomarocco, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1Wear Crocs!
- skipvt, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1While sitting on your front porch it don't.
- esc27, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1If I understood the article correctly... I'm supposed to turn my A/C off, never cook, and cover every window with heavy drapes (essentially turning my apartment into a hot, dark, stinky cave,) and then mooch free A/C, food, and even sleep at a friends house where he isn't too cheap to run some A/C.
- mc88, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1WiskyBadger, you are odd.
- skipvt, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1"Wear cool, loose clothing"
Cool as in temperature, or cool as in popular? - diggyduggle, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1dibs on rootbeer!
- mc88, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1I was going to say, pics or it didn't happen, but then I saw you were a dude. Never mind.
- ericthesalmon, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1Less energy or less power?
- jaymzdean, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1A spritz bottle containing ice-water and a $10 electric fan and you're good.
- sb66, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1Do americans usually pay electricity when they rent? In Canada its usually included. Although I use an extra electric heater a lot more than my air conditioner :)
- kaosethema, on 07/18/2009, -4/+4you're what we call a grammar-nazi
get a life!! - inactive, on 07/18/2009, -1/+154 here.
- shiftkgb, on 07/18/2009, -1/+1Don't lie, you thought of the pics after you saw he was a guy.
- Chompy, on 07/18/2009, -1/+1Wuss, try 114.
/ Vegas - NuttyAvatar, on 07/18/2009, -1/+1Home owners? Looks like they are screwed here too!
- gnimsh, on 07/18/2009, -1/+1Owning a home is for suckers! Mortgages suck!
- Spacejack, on 07/19/2009, -0/+0Don't skimp on the sno cones neither.
- Anand999, on 07/18/2009, -1/+1Sorry, but I'll take 114 with no humidity over 104 with high humidity any day. With high humidity, your sweat evaporates at a much lower rate and consequently the cooling ability of evaporating sweat more or less goes away.
- cawfee, on 07/18/2009, -3/+2Cold showers are actually worse to cool you off than warm showers because you'll be cool for a few seconds and then go right back to being sticky and hot, as opposed to a warm shower that pretty much just makes you feel refreshed.
- WiskyBadger, on 07/18/2009, -4/+3Try and take a good ***** daily, I don't know about you but I find I feel much cooler after taking a nice deuce. I think it has to do with the little bit of water that splashes up and nips my buttocks, gives me goosebumps.
- captaingary, on 07/18/2009, -2/+1Puerto Rican air conditioning:
Wet your hair and stick your head out the car window, preferably while blasting reggaeton. - SystemicThought, on 07/18/2009, -2/+1Stating that a microwave is the most efficient plug-in appliance in the kitchen is a pretty bold statement... how do you even determine that a microwave is more efficient than a blender or a rice cooker? My electric tea kettle gets water hot for much less energy than a microwave... (I have one of those readers you can plug in between electric devices and the wall to read how much they use)
