- minoss, on 02/07/2009, -2/+36LOL @ DMV workers claiming they generate money.
- warpdesign, on 02/07/2009, -2/+27Can we please have a balanced budget now?? If this doesn't piss Californians off wait till our State tax refund checks are delayed. Heads are going to roll in our state.
- zenerdiode, on 02/07/2009, -1/+21I'd rather have 90% of a cushy state job than no job at all. The people being laid off at my work wish they had the option of being put on furlough for a day or two out of the month.
And the most annoying thing I hear about coming out of these state workers mouths is that they'd prefer job cuts instead of furlough. Well, as long as it's other's people's jobs and not their's, since every single on of them think they're irreplaceable and a vital cog. Anyways, I think furlough is a pretty fair way of going about it. - algaeturd, on 02/07/2009, -0/+20This will be commonplace eventually so might as well sit back and enjoy the time off if you work for state government.
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -5/+24CA already has the highest income and sales and gas tax in America. These POS legislators are absolutely refusing to cut spending, because they are bought and paid for by the state employee unions. So CA is *****. I pray that CA gets no "stimulus" money, so it will be FORCED to cut this ridiculous spending.
This is what you get when Democrats run a place. GOP is no better, but be aware of what Democrats will really do to a state or city or country if left to their own devices. - yocouchdigga, on 02/07/2009, -2/+19the funniest thing to me is that it's NOT Arnold's fault... he's actually done a decent job.
- idavidtang, on 02/07/2009, -3/+19"I'll be back".
- lohphat, on 02/07/2009, -4/+19No one is owed a job.
The problem with civil servants is that their unions protect them for the wrong reasons. In the real world business have to let people go when there's not enough income, but in government there's a culture of entitlement that they're immune from the economy.
They need to take the lumps like everyone else. It's not nice, but it's fair. - kevine, on 02/07/2009, -1/+13We get it and it sucks, but I'm looking at those 200,000 people getting 10% less each month, but all of them still employed, getting benefits, and a couple of days each month to spend with family, friends, and enjoying life.
This is much better than the thought of looking at 20,000 people getting completely laid off in a situation where there would be no jobs available for them for God knows how long. - codyman, on 02/07/2009, -6/+17You've gotta give kudos to Schwarzenegger for actually standing up to the 16 year old girl shopping sprees of the state assembly/congress
When he called them all girlies... it wasn't far from the truth - imikedaman, on 02/07/2009, -1/+11Cutting the budget essentially means firing state employees, and California is probably in the most need of a cut budget, so this isn't too much of a surprise. Unfortunately.
I wonder what's going to happen when 90% of those people file for unemployment benefits. - inactive, on 02/07/2009, -1/+10There are plenty of companies cutting back on their employees hours. Why should these workers be exempt?
- webXL, on 02/07/2009, -0/+8The DMV "generates" money like our lungs "generate" oxygen.
- Tyrghast, on 02/07/2009, -9/+17I'll re-post a comment from earlier, since it's probably the most effective solution to our economic issues:
What we need to do is start growing, exporting, making products of, and taxing both industrial hemp and smoke-able marijuana. We have thousands of acres, we have millions of unemployed, and we are grossly in debt. In a matter of months we could create more jobs than were lost and become the world powerhouse in the hemp industry (which makes everything from more durable clothes to more durable paper to more durable rope) and medicinal/recreational marijuana. It's simple, it's grand, it's the solution to our needs as a country.
By the way, two of the copies of the Declaration of Independence were written on hemp paper... and they have barely begun to yellow ( I know they are subject to state-of-the-art preservation techniques but in comparison the regular paper hasn't held up nearly as well). - yocouchdigga, on 02/07/2009, -2/+10i never thought i'd say this but he has done a damn good job in CA...
- roach666, on 02/07/2009, -0/+7Well, better to have two unpaid days than to have no job at all.
- LeepII, on 02/07/2009, -2/+9Sorry, my best friend is forced to take off 1 month EVERY QUARTER because of budget cutbacks. I have been laid off with NO warning. I just don't have much sympathy for people that are forced to burn a few vacation days to keep their paychecks the same.
- Lynxpro, on 02/07/2009, -0/+7Arnold does not take his salary.
- DigitAl56K, on 02/07/2009, -0/+6No, the state is not paying them to work certain days to save money (i.e." we cut your pay and you stay home every other Friday").
It's not the choice of the state workers or of the unions, who have tried to propose other solutions. - Enlightenment, on 02/07/2009, -4/+10California government union member just whine, whine, whine, whine, whine like little school girls all the time. Just shut the f*ck up and be happy they didn't fire your dumb ass like other companies have already fired hundreds of thousands of people!
- Tyrghast, on 02/07/2009, -2/+8Educate yourself a little and reach past blind hatred of anything marijuana related. First off, taxing a 7+ billion dollar industry, what about that don't you like? Second, bringing back industrial hemp and applying it's hundreds of uses would create even more jobs than legalizing recreational pot alone, bringing in more taxes for the government and taking a large bite out of unemployment rates.
Find something to prove me wrong. I'm not being arrogant, cocky, aloof or any other negative adjective you care to throw. Find actual facts that refute the (currently indisputable) fact that legalization of marijuana is one of the few things that could help this country out of it's slump.
Also, I haven't been 'high' in over a year. Neither do I drink or smoke tobacco. I have no personal stake in my argument, I simply get outraged at the sheer ignorance of the people who oppose marijuana legalization. - ttam, on 02/07/2009, -0/+5unpaid leave? I call it a layoff with possibility of re-hire.
- jpop, on 02/07/2009, -0/+5No, then you'd have car registration fees being $180 per year + high property taxes.
- keraneuology, on 02/07/2009, -1/+6Uh, excuse me? How is the government being classy with SOMEBODY ELSE'S MONEY?????
The state is proving that it will get along just fine without all of these extra manhours, yet is champing at the bit to spend all that money on salaries for people who do jobs that clearly aren't that critical to the survival. Why are you supporting such a bloated, inefficient government?
And then you call it classy? - Dr3w, on 02/07/2009, -3/+7This coming from a guy named Pirate?
- fabkebab, on 02/07/2009, -2/+6I got the impression that they are cutting the budget by reducing the hours everyone works - so they get less salary but keep thier jobs?
I think its actually quite classy of the California government, instead of laying off sheds of people like industry is doing - inactive, on 02/07/2009, -2/+6"I pray that CA gets no "stimulus" money, so it will be FORCED to cut this ridiculous spending."
Since CA has the most legislators in Washington, it would seem to be impossible that they won't get any stimulus money...in fact they'll be at or near the top of the biggest recipients. - imbob, on 02/07/2009, -3/+7Government doesn't care about balancing budgets, they have no incentive too.
and the tax payers are the ones that are hit by this mistakes, by higher taxes, and inflation.
NOT TO MENTION all the time wasted with bureaucrats
3 hours in the DMV 3 hours!!
just for an ID last week.................
i could of been on DIGG or something!
P.S. whats with the comment box going up and down! i thought it was fixed already! - iammzac, on 02/07/2009, -6/+10***** Thing Sucks!
- DarkShroud, on 02/07/2009, -2/+6California is going to have to cut the social programs and fire the extra employees that will no longer be needed.
- jpop, on 02/07/2009, -1/+5The funniest thing to me is that Arnold tried getting a couple bills passed earlier that would have helped, but the unions banded together and annihilated him in the press and the public voted against the bills. Now they're getting what they sowed...
- Barackalypse, on 02/07/2009, -3/+7Its a good start. They should use the time to figure out which ones are unnecessary and give them 2 weeks notice.
- mehan, on 02/07/2009, -0/+4"3 hours in the DMV 3 hours!!
just for an ID last week.................
i could of been on DIGG or something!"
..God bless the DMV. - aschneid, on 02/07/2009, -0/+4At least those people are getting the two extra days off each month. Know what my company did? Just cut everyone's pay by 5% and we are still working 40+ hours a week. Not that I'm complaining (unlike those ungrateful state workers....), at least I still have a job. I smiled and thanked my company for only cutting my pay by 5% and went back to my coding.
- lilamae, on 02/07/2009, -3/+7You are so f--k'd. California will be the first on Obama's give our money away to deadbeats list.
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -0/+3Watch CA, NY, NJ and FL as these states all had defiicits when all the other states had surpluses 200 to 2006. The rivers of tax money from real estate transactions and sales tax are no longer there, The question is will they cut spending or raise your taxes more. Why are actors and lawyers running or ruining our country?
- randumbusername, on 02/07/2009, -2/+5i don't believe it. government workers living in the same world i have to live in.
- smotpoker, on 02/07/2009, -2/+5Not sure about Cali but I know in some states they seem to scam lots of money from people. WTF does it cost more to register a vehicle relative to it's price, for example?
- enantiodromia, on 02/07/2009, -1/+4oh i get it now.
all those decades California propped up a majority of the country don't mean anything now, because after Bush's policies destroyed Wall Street, the real estate market, and pretty much every major industry, we should be pointing fingers at who is receiving more than their share of stimulus money.
the federal taxes generated by California alone paid for at least the top ten States who received the most money from Federal Tax income, and had done so for a very long time.
when you think about it, all those Red/Southern states who were the largest recipients of Federal Tax dollars were really just holding their hands out, and waiting for all that juicy free money generated by a state larger in riches and power than most countries throughout the world.
you want to point to California as an example of what happens when Democrats run a government. well, between california and new york, the rest of the country is able to survive comfortably. imagine if all states had the output and innovation california does. or if even half of the states reached half of california's GDP.
lets build walls around each state, and we will not let any federal money come in that did not originally go out, and we will see which states are left after 10 years. - radio1mike, on 02/07/2009, -0/+3Have you guys ever worked for a state government?
Right now, I work in a state position. My career is broken 50-50 between state and private sector.
And I tell you, working for the private sector has been ***** better. Let's see, I had better pay, cheaper health insurance, better equipment, more respect and a whole host or perks that most staties only dream of. But I do my gov't job because I believe in the mission of my job. - lazerflesh, on 02/07/2009, -0/+3Oh, they work for SEIU..
I actually work under that union.... I've been looking at technical training in the last few months. .. This was one of my fears. If the state doesn't have the money they can't afford to pay the caretakers, cna's, state workers, home health care etc etc.. - Lynxpro, on 02/07/2009, -0/+2We don't get to burn our vacation days in the place of the furlough days.
- Lynxpro, on 02/07/2009, -1/+3...if you've seen the typical member of the management team within California's State Civil Service, you'd understand why there is a "need" for the unions.
Meed, I just answered your question. - Lynxpro, on 02/07/2009, -0/+2Gray Davis was better? Really? He was the one that caved in and let the Legislature squander the dot-com budget surpluses by agreeing to massive permanent spending increases instead of one-time supplemental expenditures. You know nothing of what you write.
It does not matter who sits in the Governor's Office at the moment. The Legislature is out of control because it is led by the extreme elements within the Democratic and Republican parties who cannot compromise one bit. This will continue until the reforms of Prop 11 take place for the next election cycle. - PrettyBoyFloyd, on 02/07/2009, -2/+4I think once people become comfortable with having state office closed two days a month, they may begin to realize just how little government really does for them. And how easy it would be to close government offices four or even five days a month. Putting state workers on part-time status would save even more money. Government services have only become so vast and expensive in the last century or so (especially after Roosevelt used his emergency powers during the depression to turn government make-work jobs for the unemployed into the bureaucratic behemoth we now support with our taxes). For the first centuries of the United States' existence, we had part-time legislators, who served (sometimes on a volunteer basis) only when the legislature was in session, and then went back to their real jobs for the rest of the year.
Government is too big and too expensive. It's about time we used this opportunity to cut it back down to size, especially since it was government corruption that got us into this mess in the first place. - LogicalWisdom, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2I live in California and I'm glad they are doing this, government needs to shrink, there is no other way. These people who are taking a pay cut, well guess what, you chose to work for the government that was your choice, and just like those of us in the private sector you get to take the good with the bad. So suck it up crybabies.
- DarkShroud, on 02/07/2009, -1/+3People have to have money for you to tax them. California already has the 2nd highest sales tax in the country. My home county, Cook County Illinois where Obama is from currently has the highest sales tax starting at 10%. That doesn't include township taxes that in some cases add another 2+% on top of the 10%. Then take into account all the additional taxes California already has. Which is why business & people are leaving the state.
- jpop, on 02/07/2009, -1/+3They'll get the same amount of money as everyone else on unemployment when the budget's screwed up (ie. $0)
- enantiodromia, on 02/07/2009, -1/+3Arnold the Democrat, eh?
- govsucks, on 02/08/2009, -0/+2It takes a financial collapse to shrink the government an inch. Welcome to Earth government employees.
