2008 Olympics to have Lasting Economic Impact

imediadb.com — From my perch on the observation deck of the TV Tower in Shanghai, I could see an endless stream of loaded container ships creeping down the Huangpu River. Massive cranes and half-built skyscrapers dominated the expansive skyline. I was staring at the heart of what has been the fastest growing economy in the world for the last 30 years.

    • ljin, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1I guess it's a necessary evil. When you grow that fast, it's hard to slow down and say: hey, we want to look forward 20 years and protect our environment now. When China becomes a more developed country, I think everything will come together.

  • panicbombs, on 08/06/2008, -0/+3I watched a PBS segment on the pollution. It turns out 3/4 of their smog is actually coming from other cities in China and it hovers over the city until the wind pushes it out. The cycle happens over and over.

    As Americans, you guys simply don't understand the sweat and tears we have poured into this Olympics in attempt to impress you, you wont understand unless you look at the long and often shameful history of our people.

    The significance of this Olympics to us Chinese?
    • igothugeguns, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0No, we Americans don't understand because most of us haven't seen the history. To think where you were 40 years ago is almost shocking. You have built so much in so little time. I am impressed. However, no amount of progress is going to change the way Americans feel about communism and civil rights violations. It is simply who we are.
  • meowbbish, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0The Olympics is just a showcase of the modern China, but it has not boosted the economy. Instead it forces the government to cut down traffic and factory activities, and invest billions in fixing the blue sky for a few days. What do you think?
