- KibblesnBitts, on 07/13/2009, -1/+24Pretend your car is broken so your friends drive you.
- robertisaar, on 07/12/2009, -1/+21every one of these "tips" require nothing more than common sense.
if you can't figure these out for yourself, i feel sorry for you.
on the plus side, i didn't know the silverado hybrid got 26MPG on the highway, not bad at all. - robertisaar, on 07/13/2009, -0/+14using my wife as an example, that will hurt more than help...
- mtnboy, on 07/12/2009, -2/+12Yeah thats good, but there are people like college students and those in financial troubles who can really appreciate this little dollars because when they calculate yearly savings, it ends up being a few hundred dollars. Every little bit counts.
- gnomeh, on 07/13/2009, -1/+10IDK man... I found smashing into other vehicles was a horrible way to help fuel conservation. The drag produced from the ***** idiot and his motorcycle caught underneath my car is just horrible.
- fury420, on 07/13/2009, -0/+6when your vehicle only gets 15mpg, an increase of a couple MPG will save you like 15% on gas
plus the driving-style related tips can make a huge difference in some cases. I recently did a few 300mile roundtrip road trips in a 2000 Caddilac STS, covering the same ground each time.... on the trips that I relied on cruise control I got 35% better mileage, all while traveling at similar speeds. - Shiftyeyedgoat, on 07/13/2009, -0/+6*cough*
"Acetone is a powerful solvent that’s used as paint thinner and nail polish remover, so it’s very corrosive. That’s why many automakers specifically warn against using it.
On their Car Talk Web site, NPR’s Tom and Ray Magliozzi make it very clear that acetone “does absolutely nothing” to increase gas mileage.
“It’s bo-o-o-gus,” Tom writes. “Don’t put acetone in your gas tank.”
While the acetone is in your fuel system, he says, “it’ll be eagerly dissolving all of your rubber components … like gaskets and O-rings.” "
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18909941/ - TheCash, on 07/13/2009, -0/+4If she told you your 4.6L was "big" for a V8, she lied to ya man. Sorry to be the one to break it to ya.
- inactive, on 07/12/2009, -5/+9Thanks, but I'm not so poor that an extra $4 every time I fill up is going to make or break me. I never understood why people freak out about gas prices unless they're truckers or something.
- AJRiddle, on 07/13/2009, -1/+5Buy a motorcycle
- MasterChi, on 07/13/2009, -1/+5FTA - "You don’t have to religiously do an oil change every 3,000 miles....."
Yes, yes you do. If you want that car to last and work efficiently do the regular scheduled maintenance including oil changes as recommended by the manufacturer, religiously. It will make the engine last forever. - FrancisHC, on 07/13/2009, -1/+5Haha :) I'm not here to brag about big engines or anything. It's no LS7, but usually you only see this much displacement in muscle cars and sports cars.
- TheCash, on 07/13/2009, -1/+5And if Ford didn't sell the most fuel efficient midsized sedan Hybrid on the market right now, your post might actually have some merit. I guess you didn't realized I was also getting better mileage when I smoked your ass in my Fusion this morning. Sucks to be you.
- factsahoy, on 07/13/2009, -0/+4Some of them are wrong.
"use the “economy” or “recirculation” setting on your AC."
The recirculation setting merely redirects the air intake. That's like saying you should not turn the temperature down so much. These work in a home unit because the compressor runs less often. But in a car, the compressor is engaged as long as the AC is on; the temperature dial also merely changes the mixture of cold air with warm. - lpmusix, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3So that way it's all up hill on the way back? :)
- MAGZine, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3If you accelerate hard enough, you might be able to catch some air off of a speed bump and lose him.
- Philbert, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2Or a scooter,Vespas can go like a month on one tank.
- mrpunman, on 07/13/2009, -5/+716. Drive like a woman
- Xzelick, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2Some of these are just plain retarded...
"Take cover: Did you know that a hot car evaporates gas? If you live in an area that can get especially hot, you should consider parking your car in the shade or in the garage on a very hot day"
Unless you have holes in your gas tank or fuel lines your gas is not going to evaporate anywhere, gas cannot magically vaporize and then pass through metal or rubber. If you don't smell gasoline then gasoline is not evaporating.
"Cool it on the AC. Now that we are headed for warmer weather, use the “economy” or “recirculation” setting on your AC. When you’re not driving on the highway (or driving in a low speed), consider simply rolling down the window to keep the car cooler."
The recirculation setting will not give you any better gas mileage, the air conditioning unit in your car is powered by a belt that connects to your engine. Your air conditioner always will leach the same amount of horsepower from your engine no matter what setting it is on as long as it is on. I suggest that nobody uses the recirculate or "max AC" setting on your car unless you are driving on a dusty dirt road or have any other reason to not allow outside air in your car. The recirculate setting is bad for your vehicle because it does not grab fresh air and will cause your car to overheat if you are not careful. - agentsrecord, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2I agree.
Anyone who has had a car for more then a few years could close their eyes and list these off. - tomarocco, on 07/13/2009, -2/+4So you are smart enough to count but too lazy to get a job?
- ericcc, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2Not true. "Acetone in your gas tank improves mileage" has been debunked many times since at least 2006. I believed this myth too when i first heard it.
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -2/+4Economy cars are great... if you're less than 6 foot tall.
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2I drive a GMC Sierra. (I own a boat, don't flame)
- litkaj, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2Screw this. I'm a contrarian. I'm going to go buy a Hummer. I'll save money and buy one used rather than a new one. :)
- TheCash, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2Oh I know, it was just too easy a target to pass up. Kudos to you for being a good sport and playing along :-)
- daschupa, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2Here's some other pro tips:
- Put duct tape over your exhaust pipe to stop unused gas from escaping.
- Pour some water in your gas tank, it works with the shampoo, why not? Maybe throw a couple rocks in there too like the toilet tank?
- Fill your tires with helium, it will make your car lighter and you will save lots of gas, heck just fill the whole car with helium or maybe get some balloons and attach it to your car like in that documentary I saw last weekend with the talking dog! - Chupacabraz, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2What Japanese, V6 powered, full-size truck gets 26MPG on the highway?
- Chupacabraz, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2Wow, this tip might save me a whole quart of gasoline over the summer. Thanks!
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2Gas has gone down for me, but I live in the state and city with the majority of refining capacity of the US.
"buy a fuel efficient car" - FAIL...I just bought a car wit a 6 liter V8. As long as I'm light on the throttle I'm ok. - leetninja, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2you truly are a ***** moron.
- tomarocco, on 07/13/2009, -1/+2So, the moral of your story is that one should live their life to please impatient people that they don't even know.
- Chupacabraz, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1Overheating from using recirculate? I don't think you understand how the AC system works. Whether it's on recirculate or not has absolutely no bearing on the car's own cooling system.
- MAGZine, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1So if you're >= 6 foot, what do you drive?
- bizchris, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1Brilliant - time for a road trip!!
Unfortunately, my transmission's leaking... mind if we use your ride? - ninjaturtles1, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1Ride a bike!
- fury420, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1yup. although since the speedlimits on the route in question vary from 80kph to 110kph (50-70mph) I had no real opportunity to exceed 75mph, nevertheless I was shocked at how much better mileage we got when using cruise control, even when maintaining the same speeds within +/- 5mph of the limit
- lpmusix, on 07/13/2009, -1/+2You don't need to change it every 3,000 miles though. Many cars are designed to go longer distances, as well as various oil (synthetic) is designed for much longer usage. My Accord only requires a change every 7500 miles using regular off the shelf oil, changing it anymore often just wastes money and oil.
- Shoreyline, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1Protip: Buy gas early in the morning. lol
- phphreak, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1One of the pics shows 8 cases of beer in the trunk, and it is Lakeport beer. Cheap enough to buy bargain beer, but a lush enough to buy 8 cases.
- Philbert, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1If you don't like dying, then yes.
- cire84117, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1I love the people who will drive an extra 5-10 minutes to save that 5 cents per gallon on gas. Think of it this way. Lets just say people mostly fill up 15 gallons (spit balling here) and that 5 cents a gallon they save saves them a whole 75 cents (minus the extra drive to the gas station and time). However when they can save that 75 cents else where it doesn't happen. Be frugal in other areas and that will save you gas money.
- Lewie, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1Escher's got you covered!
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e8/Esch ... - Lewie, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1The Fusion is the only* contemporary American sedan I wouldn't mind owning. Throw in a turbo I-4/I-5 and I'd start drooling.
*(from a specs standpoint, the Cadillac CTS is pretty nice, but I despise GM too much; even before the bailout) - leetninja, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1Didn't we just all read about your friends in Michigan a few days ago???
- robertisaar, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1hydrogen is even lighter than helium....
- Tolzmaniac, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1I just purchased a 1994 Firebird Formula with the 5.7 LT1. ~25mpg freeway. i love the 6th gear :)
- EdgarG8, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1What car did you buy?
- Vanthu, on 07/13/2009, -0/+116. umm.... stop driving so much?
