- djepik, on 08/21/2008, -0/+18Wow, that was an impressive collection of buzz words.
- nicolaihel, on 08/20/2008, -3/+20Agreed, but a couple of points:
1. Most people take traditional encyclopedias to be accurate, but they are often just as inaccurate as wikipedia -- fewer knowledgeable people check their facts than check wikipedia's articles, actually. Wikipedia is checked by experts around the world -- if you're a scientist, you can check a scientific entry and let people know it's bunk. That's not done in traditional encyclopedia articles or other types of references.
2. If an article follows wikipedia's standards, the facts will have sources linked to at the bottom of the article. You can then check the sources yourself -- highly recommended if the facts are important to you on a particular topic. That's something that has never been available in traditional references before. - jarjarwang, on 08/21/2008, -0/+10My workday breaks all of these rules. :(
- Pandatot, on 08/21/2008, -2/+12How is that a paradox?
That seems like the exact message that Apple tries to convey with it's marketing. - rolandvvv, on 08/21/2008, -1/+11Thank you, am I so floored by your insightful response. I can definitely tell you read the article.
/sarcasm - BXRWXR, on 08/21/2008, -3/+13#13. STFU
#14. GBTW - gmeluski, on 08/21/2008, -2/+10Tired of pie-in-the-sky blogs from people who wish the world ran that way.
I'll take him to task on one
4. People don’t have to be in an office.
Yes, yes they do. Unless every single person in your office is a communicative genius, there is a lot that can get lost in the translation. Doesn't body language make up 90 percent of communication? Some things just can't be translated over email or AIM. - BradOFarrell, on 08/21/2008, -2/+9Sounds like someone's a bitter incompetent dolt who thinks anyone who isn't as bitter as him is delusional.
- sodade, on 08/21/2008, -0/+7#5 Archive, don't file. Well that would be ***** great, but most companies use exchange/outlook for email. Good luck using outlook search and good luck with a bloated PST file. I spend an ungodly amount of time sticking emails into folders spread out among 5 personal PSTs. It ***** sucks, but it's the only way that I can see...
- santaliqueur, on 08/21/2008, -0/+7But he used the internet's favorite new term, "cloud computing", even though nobody knows what the ***** it is!
- gtluke, on 08/21/2008, -1/+8never ***** on your time, never sweat on his time
- Kenzan, on 08/21/2008, -0/+7I really wish that these rules were implemented more.
Unfortunately the three vital things Corporations don't get is:
Meetings suck
Telecommuting is awesome
Treating employees like humans is the best investment you'll ever make. - PhillyMJS, on 08/21/2008, -1/+813. Anyone who accuses someone else of having 'a case of the Mondays' gets their ass kicked.
(I have to see if I can work any Titanic jokes into this post, as long as I'm hitting these phenomena at the height of their popularity.) - tacothedeep, on 08/21/2008, -0/+71. Why more than 1 or 2 "ha"s ?
2. It is generally considered a major faux pas on the internet to criticize some aspect of another poster's grammar, only to make similar mistakes yourself. To mimic your style: Also poster. Learn to make big sentence.
3. Most businesses follow or are beginning to follow the patterns of reliance on new technology that this article outlines. You are an idiot. - danlowlite, on 08/21/2008, -0/+7I'd go so far as to say only use Wikipedia for it's secondary sources. It's fine if you need an innocent factoid or whatever, but if you're doing research, even with a traditional encyclopedia, you're doing it wrong.
Hopefully you learned that in high school. As a product of the American education system, I sure didn't until much later... - britoca, on 08/21/2008, -1/+8I wish I could bury this 5 times over.
- veriix, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6I think those are union rules.
- cneedham, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6Go on, I'll bite on this ... If 50% of IMDb's data is wrong or inaccurate, (BuckNutty) please list the top 3 most obvious errors here and I'll personally take a look at fixing them, thanks

IMDb founder & managing director - rolandvvv, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6wow, I can tell by your post and by your name that you hate your job. Time to look for a new job, buddy. Cheer up!
- locke2002, on 08/21/2008, -0/+5@cubicledrone: Your analysis is a little narrow. Should companies keep whole divisions cranking away when that whole division is a loss and they have no plans to improve its product? And maybe your division IS profitable, but they could make more money elsewhere and have limited capital? Your job is not sacred, nor should it be.
- Finsternis, on 08/21/2008, -1/+6"Collaboration is the new productivity". Pffft.
Collaboration is, and always has been, the most efficient way to waste time and generate terrible work while giving the less-intelligent a free ride on the coattails of the smarter and harder-working.
Almost everything (in business) generated collaboratively sucks. It's a way to perpetuate mediocrity, guarantee nothing new or innovative, target everything at the lowest common denominator, and ensure that it's all so "PC" it makes your teeth hurt as everyone tries to put their own spin on things. A good example is the way Congress writes laws. Collaboration by 400 people! Wow, that must be some good stuff they write! - mchisari, on 08/21/2008, -2/+7
There should be classes in how to critically use Wikipedia from sixth grade on. Everything from citing references, to discussions, etc. - inactive, on 08/21/2008, -2/+7Mirror (If needed) :- http://nepalicommunity.com/weblogs/index.php/2008/ ...
- saranagati, on 08/21/2008, -0/+5Cloud computing is a hybrid of grid computing, high availability and generally virtual servers which can be geographically located anywhere on the globe. This had previously not been possible (and still has problems) due to syncing large amounts of data instantaneously over the internet. A cloud computer network usually should allow you to create/remove new virtual machines on the fly to grow/shrink your computing power.
Of course 99% of the articles that mention cloud computing (such as this one) have nothing to do with cloud computers, they're just a web application. Googles new cloud computing network has nothing to do with gdocs or any of that, its just a network where you'll be able to write your own web applications on their network which will utilize googles closed cloud computing network. - gaoshan, on 08/21/2008, -1/+5That looks a lot like my brother. Of course he is unemployed, usually high out of his mind and lives on mom and dad's money but DAMN he looks awesome!
- heretrix, on 08/21/2008, -1/+5I'm certainly in agreement about the meetings. It's just another way for your boss to waste your time with ***** then blame you when stuff doesn't get done.
- HammondOrgan, on 08/21/2008, -0/+4is this some sort of math equation?
Diameter x Mass x Abs. value of Nerds Candies x Hippies - inactive, on 08/21/2008, -0/+4Words cannot describe my love for mirror finders. The unsung heroes of digg. I praise you.
- philars, on 08/21/2008, -0/+4Two very good points that I often (though not as eloquently) try to make when people tell me that Wikipedia is not reliable. good job
- kittnerrules, on 08/21/2008, -0/+4This is all great and true...but if anyone over 30 runs a company they will balk at this, unfortunately. My job is conducted entirely by remote software, yet I come to an office every day. Things could get done so much quicker if people employed instant messaging in addition to emailing (IMHO).
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -0/+41. Online apps and the cloud beat the desktop and hard drive.
yeah, assuming the cloud is available all the time.
3. Collaboration is the new productivity.
no, it's the new perception of productivity.
4. People don’t have to be in an office.
Depends on the task. I notice that so much more gets done on the day or two a week when telecommuters come into the office. All the collaboration software in the world cant replace sitting down with someone and working through a problem.
Oh and you may have to be in the office or similarly tied down to a home office in order to take advantage of the online apps in that cloud that #1 is so fond of.
6. Small teams are better than large teams.
But large teams promote flatter organizations and less micromanaging from over involved managers which are better.
8. Fewer tasks are better than many.
Yeah, but out here in the real world, fewer tasks implies hiring other staff to handle all the tasks. In today's economy, thats just not happening.
10. Open-source is better than closed.
Not always. There is value in having a support contract for critical applications, that's not always available for open source products. When the app you rely on goes belly up or can no longer scale, having someone to throw the problem at can mean the difference between success and failure.
11. Rest is as important as work.
You know that and I know that and your boss may claim to know that but in the real world, hard work (sometimes overwork) is rewarded. - Braxo, on 08/21/2008, -0/+4A lot of those points match the way 37Signals works. They also have a great blog on their "Getting Real" workplace philosophy. A good book too.
- santaliqueur, on 08/21/2008, -0/+4WWJD? JWSTFU & GBTW
- psibladeZX, on 08/21/2008, -0/+4Dugg for having expressed the truest and most overlooked fact of all... meetings are ***** USELESS!!!!!!!! They take up an hour to say something that can be said in 5 minutes or less. You can just send out an email with bullet points. Most of the time they're filled with people ***** and not producing any tangible work. I dont give a ***** about Tom's kids or Diane's manicure! They are a complete and utter waste of time. I hate when companies even bother with meetings. The worst are company wide meetings that take up a day. Those are the most boring ***** on the planet. I just bring a magazine or a PSP to play because I would rip my hair out of boredom. They are complete waste of time.
That being said, let me submit this comment on digg which I have been browsing for the past hour, and get back to work :-) - psibladeZX, on 08/21/2008, -0/+4Dugg for finally coming out with the truest fact of all... meetings are ***** USELESS. They are a complete waste of time. You can just email a few bullet points and thats it. No need to waste a ***** hour ***** about things other than the task... I dont give a ***** about Tom's kids, or Diane's trip to the manicurist!!!!!!!! Let's get to work and stop wasting time.
That being said, let me submit my comment on digg, and go back to work :-) - JasonCox, on 08/21/2008, -0/+3No! I dont want to GBTW! You STFU!
- xoxota, on 08/21/2008, -2/+5Oh yes, everything is changing. CHANGING, I SAY! These stupid articles remind me of every front-page story from Wired magazine during it's first year of publication. Every headline began with "Welcome to the new economy", and ended with something patently ridiculous, like "Forget dollars, the new currency is... EYEBALLS!".
Epic dumb. - aolshove, on 08/21/2008, -0/+3Whoa, whoa, slow down. Let's just start with abolishing the friggen dress code, m'kay?
- hokie47, on 08/21/2008, -1/+4Really shows how the work place is changing. Sadly I find older workers even people just over 30 tend to not to understand these changes.
- Rikkochet, on 08/21/2008, -1/+4"People don’t have to be in an office."
My company has a really lenient attendance policy and people can work remotely all the time.
Ya know what? Yes, people ***** do have to be in an office for things to function with any degree of productivity. - fredw, on 08/21/2008, -2/+5I love comments likes this.... "Sadly I find older workers even people just over 30 tend to not to understand these changes."
No it is just that we don't follow every new pied piper down the street"
Who do you think made all these changes?????????
Hmmm Linux was first released circa 1991 so you the 18-30 crowd started using it when you were 1-13. You go dude...
Michael Scott said it the best about wikipedia
"Anyone in the world can write anything they want about any subject. So you know you are getting the best possible information"
Using Web based apps instead of desktop apps... This screams about numerous security and privacy issues. Yes there is encryption but why don't we just send a copy of every document to "Big Brother" and get it over with.
Exactly when has the workplace stopped changing??????
As far as her Grandfather is concerned the early versions of word processors and desktop apps were horrible. He is still a good writer. The technology failed him in not being able to get his thoughts to the outside world as efficiently as his typewriter. It took decades to get it right. Had the early computers and printers and networks had the intuitive user interface of an iPod it would be a different story... - psibladeZX, on 08/21/2008, -0/+3dont know why you're getting dugg down... i agree with you wholeheartedly... IM works better than face time or email because most of the time you really dont even want to see the person you have to deal with
- psibladeZX, on 08/21/2008, -0/+3dude, just make a folder for every person you deal with then stick those people into departments, so you know who youre dealing with... makes it MUCH easier
but youre right, outlook ***** sucks - oldgal, on 08/21/2008, -0/+3I'm 65 and used many of these rules throughout my career. I have found (at least in IT) the number of old people vs. the number of young people who resist change to be about the same - the older recalcitrants look worse because the youngsters are just establishing a baseline from which they will not budge in the future.
- diggerbez, on 08/21/2008, -0/+3I would like your comment better with out the Titanic jokes plans.
- DeFex, on 08/21/2008, -0/+3Might be great for people who don't do anything but office stuff, but i doubt creative people will be using "the cloud" any time soon. btw "cloud" just sounds dumb. it was probably made up by one of the useless meeting goers, who say "paradigm" and "tipping point" all the time.
- santaliqueur, on 08/21/2008, -1/+4Let's stop pretending you have the chance to bang the receptionist at a real job.
- fearsofgun, on 08/21/2008, -0/+2you can't rule out physically filing documents. I get the whole computer archiving but only if you have the most important stuff printed out and filed physically.
- psibladeZX, on 08/21/2008, -1/+3COMPLETELY RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Perlpro, on 08/21/2008, -0/+2Google desktop can index and search your outlook folders.
